Can you do a quick tutorial on how you paint a WALL :'D
i was randomly painting a wall for this comm when i remembered this ask so anon if you're still around.... it's not a tutorial amd it's not quick but i recorded a bit of the process
but in all honesty i just throw things at the wall and see what sticks (pun unintended)
i try to balance out texture vs smooth brushes so that it looks sorta realistic and i also use pngs or texture overlays to better mimic that concrete aspect (pun intended this time)

edit tutorial for @fe3lthethunder !! all images found on tumblr under "transparent png" aside from the John wick icon which I got off of Pinterest which is a screenshot from i believe. the second or third movie. but i wanna say the third. ANYWAY
STEP 1: upload your frame if you're using one and put the image behind it, erase what u don't need.
how it looks on ibis paint. i use an airbrush eraser which is why the bottom is Like That
STEP 2: color the frame. there's a ton of ways you can do this, usually i just use multiply+ clipping layer and color over it but here's something else you could do
pin light is what made the bg of the frame brown, and lighter color makes the darker parts blue and stuff. i just color picked from the og icon But if you want your own colors go off too.
STEPS 3 AND 4: RECOLORING PNGS
both the ribbon and the flowers found on tumblr! the color layer on the ribbon is made it match and the color dodge upped the contrast so it stands out. luminosity makes the flowers lighter and hue changes the color
so here's what it looks like right now. p simple but still looks nice. i don't like using lighter/darker color layers for actual pngs (frames r fine though), hue and color layers + multiply and color dodge or add layers are gonna be your best friend. luminosity helps make it lighter without losing too much depth, which is also a good option on stuff where you need it to blend in.
STEP 4 AND 5: Random Shit Go
Boom. Slap some pngs on that icon. The butterflies I found on tumblr again and just put in the corner because I felt it needed something there, the error window I made with a windows error generator and duplicated a few times, moving them over to make a pile up thingy. Neither of them were edited or recolored— in fact a lot of the pngs I use I don't recolor a lot or at all.
STEP 7: effects
Usually I don't do these but I thought it would look nice. Chromatic aberration is fun (i always center it moving away from the face) and I usually keep the distance to a 10px maximum otherwise it gets wonky and your icon might look awkward. Glitch I also keep away from the face for the same reason, but hands are free game.
Whatever program you use should also have save as transparent png . Ibis paint does not make it clear that not having transparent checked will give it a white background. Always Check Transparent or else it will have a white bg, ask me how I know (horrid experience)
And boom! Icon!
Whatever program you use will probably have similar names. I usually have about 15 pngs over the icon, this one has 4 because I didn't want to go too crazy 😭 the biggest parts of it are recoloring and that's pretty simple once you get the hang of it— like I said hue layers are your best friend. Color balance and overlay are also great if you want some texture and variation!

It’s been another 84 years good grief, so might as well go over the basics when it comes to my uploads! Everything’s been compressorized, textures reimported in to reduce pixelation, morphs included, and other ages are repositoried to adults to save space and headache (mine). Let me know if something’s wrong so I can get defensive about it and then maybe fix it.
I’ll probably sooner or later revisit the mesh conversions I’ve made if I spot lumps or bad bones or any other eyesores and update the files as I do.

It’s just a classic full body outfit from a few years back I made for Ichabod because I couldn’t be bothered to make the coat into a separate top at the time. I’m pretty sure I never posted it before though!
The coat’s something from the game I always wanted to use and edit, so now it’s been used and edited a little and there’s a new collar texture on it.
Just the two color options because that’s all I needed.

Conversion of this sweater by Nolan-sims, but none of the original color options feature. Another version by MegaMassikaLove already exists, too, which has the original recolors! These do not conflict.
Here’s a Bodyshop swatch of the colors on teens. They’re named pretentiously (but in a cool way) so just go through the adult files to check what you want and what you don’t. Teens and elders are repositoried to those, as mentioned above.

Back when I first discovered you could and should utilize the normal maps from Sims 4 in recolors to liven them up I experimented how to best do it. I don’t know if these first recolors were it, but they have existed since so might as well share!

And then maybe chocolatesims converted them for the SIms 2. And some time ago I finally made some edits to the mesh, and combined them with the slacks I made uhh four years ago?

Shape

The photo above is from the Pixar movie “Soul”. All the characters in this movie were created through using different types of shapes. The character Jerry had different bodies/variations, but they all had a distorted type of shape. The setting of this scene takes place in “ The Great Before” where souls who haven’t been assigned yet live. The Great Before is filled with many curvilinear and non-objective shapes that help give it a unique and different look.
Shape Glossary
Shape is the external form or appearance characteristic of someone or something; the outline of an area or figure. As a verb, to shape is to give a particular form. As artists, we shape our characters outward appearance by using shapes.
Abstract Shapes and Abstraction (see Non-objective Shapes)
Abstract means no recognizable objects. Abstraction is a sliding scale from realism to completely non representational. Abstract shapes can be used in backgrounds and textures.
Biomorphic
Biomorphic is a free-form pattern or design with a shape suggestive of a living organism, especially an amoeba or protozoan.
Curvilinear Shapes
Curvilinear shapes are s-curves. Curvilinear shapes inform Jessica Rabbit’s character design and can represent a winding river vanishing into the distance.
Distortion
Distortion is exaggeration, contortion, reform, slant, twist, or warp in ways that depart from reality.
Idealism
Idealism asserts that the physical world is less important than the mind or the spirit which shapes and animates it. Idealists choose the soul, the mind, or the psyche over the body, the material, and the historical. When ideals (of appearance, or proportion for example) regulate the way an artist represents the world, her work can be described as Idealistic. The leading artists of the High Renaissance - Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo - are all associated with varying forms of Idealism, as were ancient Greek sculptors. Squash and stretch are shapes profiles that emphasize motion. The stretched position shows the form in an extended condition. When you do a sit up your belly squashes and your back stretches.

devlog # 7 // mapmaking (the procedural foundation: biomes, terrains and weather)
whew, it feels like it’s been a month since i last posted here! in the last weeks before that devlog, i had been doing almost exclusively pathfinding work, stuff that requires a lot of intense math and coding, so i felt very excited to explore other directions this week.
oh, before we get too far into other updates, i do want to mention that i started a patreon, so that people (like you!) can support the game and, more generally, all of the educational content i’m aiming to create; please do go and support me there, even if it’s just a couple of dollars each month. it helps out immensely and i’m posting some exclusive, behind the scenes content there for all of you to learn with me <3
so, anyway, this week has been full of coding up new systems, and i’ve been doing that almost entirely undirected. i did start the player stat system, something which each unit could have or derive from in order to keep track of their stats - for that, i started by following a brackeys tutorial and pretty quickly got overwhelmed, i think mostly just because i feel like creating more freely and more visually. so, pause on that.
instead, i decided to follow my desire to create a couple of systems that would allow me to create a lot of graphics or feeling for the game, with very little effort. the first system that i dreamed of (i mean, i literally have been preparing code in my dreams) was for “biomes”. it is wild to look back at devlog #6 and realise that .. this system really didn’t exist then, because it definitely exists now.
let’s get started - what do i mean by “biomes”?
well, as in ecology, a biome (by my understanding) represents the kinds of life that interact in a space, between the earth/soil/plants and the animals or other presences there. speaking more specifically for zodaia (that’s the name of my game, by the way), a biome contains information about what kinds of terrains, weather patterns, and interactables (plants, trees, ores, animals/characters/npcs, things like chests) can exist in a given space.
the intention behind the “biome”, conceptually, is to allow the player to explore different types of lands/locations and have them *feel* like different places with very specific characteristics, so that the player comes to understand what challenges and opportunities and other patterns to expect there - to create regions of environmental features. and the intention, functionally, is to allow me to procedurally generate a number of environments by just defining a few parameters, making a lot more content for the game than what i could make designing each level by hand.
so, what might some of those parameters be? what kinds of things do we need to create a “biome”? well, to start with, we might decide to name some of the biomes, themselves: which different regions would we like to create? fortunately, this process was made especially easy because i had already had a number of biomes defined from my worldbuilding, notes i have written over the years of designing the game. so, the player might be able to visit - for example - icy glaciers, high mountain plateaus, valleys, deserts, dense forests .. in total, i have defined 27 different biomes (if you join on patreon, you can find out exactly which ones!) based on something i call affinities -- basically a system of elements, something to talk about in another devlog.
in short, i made a biome class to contain all of this info, giving each of the biomes a name and defining them by enums, an easy way of representing a predefined number of values and referencing them clearly later in code; instead of setting a range of numbers to represent the concepts, we can use words/letters which are easy to remember and much easier to understand.
next, i imagined that a biome might have “weather”, so a player might expect deserts to be dry, hot, and windy, while a glade might be especially humid or rainy or foggy. should these also be stored in an enum .. or maybe their own class? well, given that there are going to be different types of weather with their own different features, it might be helpful to make both an enum *and* a class, specifically as a scriptable object (also something i will talk more about in another devlog). basically, this will allow me to say “okay which biome is this?” and enter a value, then say “okay which weather types are possible there?” and simply plug in appropriate values there, as well. so, this is what a biome (as a scriptable object) looks like in the inspector - this one being for the desert type:
i standardised for each biome to have 4 possible weathers (the higher/earlier the weather, the more likely it is to occur) and if you look ahead, you’ll also see that each biome has 6 possible tile types - terrains - as well.
the terrains, which are also scriptable objects, define things like:
- which hex color/material/prefab to use
- the movement cost for that terrain type, and if it can be moved on at all (a bool, isWalkable, used by the pathfinding) - a range of possible offsets for its height (giving some texture to the landmass as a whole), and
- which kinds of interactables might spawn on that tile, if any
you can see here that the weather is set up similarly.
so, to go back to what makes up a biome, it’s actually a lot of information but each piece of that information can be configured easily and quickly to give reliable results. because of this system, rather than a plain hex grid or one which is slightly colored and textured, i can now create a completely new type of land in around 30 seconds, something which can produce hundreds, thousands of variations for players to experience through different playthroughs.
this is one of the first example biomes i made, the “pools” biome. though there are no textures on the hexes or models of grass and such showing what’s going on here, this biome represents an area where there is a lot of water, most of it being shallow, with some deeper spots and some grass and stone poking out of the water; in addition, by simulating time progressing (by clicking the time++ button), the weather would automatically change. i’m not sure if it’s hard for others to imagine with mostly plain hexes at this point, but this moment was the very promising beginning of a more complete biome system.
and now, i’ll just do some show and tell, with more emphasis on the show - take a look at how this system developed over the course of a day or two.

added some chance for grass to spawn in the pools biome (made the grass model with basic cube shapes in unity, a quick prototype).
made a volcanic region, just by setting that there should be tiles like magma and stone, then defining a few weathers for this area.
then, the gardens, with some trees, grass, rocks, and bushes -- again, these models will be replaced by much improved models i’ll make in blender. the point was to get something working so that i could see how the system was growing; i’m finding it’s really important to focus on nearly just one thing at a time, rather than trying to balance a million systems and making measurable progress in none of them. i was very pleased with this step forward!

and while you are looking at these images, it’s really important to understand that a biome isn’t just one map, it’s an infinite number of potential maps. the glacier i made above was made in just one click (after all the labor of creating the base system, of course), and i can now generate an endless number of distinct but similarly themed/feeling glaciers simply by clicking again, each possible map interacting beautifully with the pathfinding system we initially created.
this system is beginning to show some of the massive benefits i described in devlog #2, where i discussed whether i would approach the map-making in a more hand-crafted way, or a more procedural one. as i said then, i decided i would start with the more procedural side of things since that is what i was less comfortable with, and seeing what this can do already - what a machine can create from the properties i’ve set up - is immensely inspiring to me.
i think we’ll pause there for today, and next time, i’ll probably jump into more of the making-the-map-interactable parts of my implementations. as a teaser: did you know that those randomly generated trees, bushes, and rocks up above actually have items in them, things the player can pick up?

LAYER ONE : THE OUTSIDE
Name - Selene Mahina Kihara Eye colour - A Luminescent Azure Hair style / colour - Uneven, straight bangs that frame her face-long enough to cover a brow on one side; original length of hair was a chin length bob with two notable pieces of hair that seemed to be wings. Continuously grows throughout the years and currently to her mid back. Naturally dark brown with subtle wavy texture. Height - An astounding 5′1″ Clothing style - Loose clothing that allows her to feel the elements: usually some variation of a tank top and shorts with sandals. No stranger to wearing a dress or skirt every now and again. Loves darker colors-especially blues. Also likes pastel colors. Usually has at least one piece of jewelry on at all times, along with a flower in her hair. Best physical feature: Her eyes-large, round and expressive, they’re a pure blue like the ocean. Despite being affected by Ultra Wormhole energy, the light glow they give off is rather pretty.

Best personality - Selene loves to be around confident, ambitious people. It’s energy similar to her own and there’s nothing like two people cheering each other on and being confident in themselves. Otherwise? People who aren’t afraid to be spontaneous. Best eye colour - Vibrant colors tend to attract her most! (Reds, Blues, Greens, Yellows, Purples etc.) Best hair colour - No preference, she just likes hair. Best thing to do with a partner - Snuggling while talking-occasionally sharing kisses. Physical touch is really big to her so even little things like holding hands or being next to each other with shoulders touching would be wonderful to her.

Analysis

Shape in terms of artistic composition can be defined as the external form, contours, or outline of someone or something. This piece is overall a prolific example of biomorphic abstraction, an art style which utilizes rounded abstract forms based on those found in nature.

The term space refers to a feeling of depth or three dimensionality in a composition. It can also refer to the artist's use of an area within the picture plane. A good example of an artist’s use of space in composition would be Kano Montonobu’s “Patriarchs”, an ink and light color drawing on paper. Most notably, the artist uses the concept of atmospheric perspective in his drawing, a method of creating the illusion of depth by drawing distant objects with a decreasing level of clarity. He also uses diagonal shapes in his rendering of certain structures to pull the viewers eye across the page. There is also a clear definition in this particular painting of the foreground, middle ground, and background. The 3 treatments of objects in the painting’s space help the composition achieve a sense of depth and distance. You can clearly see that smaller objects and terrain towards the bottom of the page are more clearly rendered and defined than more distant objects in the middle ground and background. Space is a valuable tool in helping the story of a composition unfold, and in this particular example we are led through an entire scene through the use of space and depth.
Space/Depth Glossary
Space is an area, expanse, territory, distance or range. Variable spaces expand orcontract as our stories unfold. A closeup has a short range. A wide shot covers a lot of territory.
Atmospheric Perspective
Value contrast and color saturation decrease with distance. Brightness increases asobjects fade further into the background. In addition, objects such as mountains may appear more blue.
Diagonal Shapes
Diagonal shapes pull the eye in a direction to create the illusion of depth. If the diagonal is going back like a railroad track or fence-line the eye will follow it into the perceived distance.
Elliptical Perspective
An ellipse is an oval shape. Elliptical perspective provides visual clues to the location ofcurved surfaces in space. Look straight down on a glass of water. The rim of the glassis a circle. Move the glass to the side, the rim now appears as an ellipse. Line up the rim at your exact eye level, the ellipse now appears as a straight line.
Foreground, Middleground, & Background
The 3 treatments of objects in space support design to achieve depth. This template for placing and sizing objects in the picture plane shows variations on the foreground, middleground, background configurations.
Foreshortening
Foreshortening is when an object's dimensions appear shorter when angled toward theviewer. At the same time the part coming toward the viewer is enlarged
Linear Perspective
Linear Perspective is a system used by artists in which the relative size, shape, and position of objects are determined by drawn or imagined lines converging at a point on the horizon. 1-point (Figure 1), 2-point, and 3-point linear perspective are illustrated in“How to Draw Exterior Backgrounds”.
Overlapping
Overlap is when part of one object is obscured by another object. The obscuring object appears to be in front.
S-Curve or Winding Path
In an image of a landscape, S-curve or winding path will draw the eye of the viewer into a perceived distance Size relationshipsObjects appear smaller as their distance from the observer increases.
Transparency or Opacity
Transparency or opacity is when we feel like we can see objects through a glassy, gauzy, smoky, or dusty layer. The transparent/opacity adjustment affects the saturation and color of objects to give a feel of depth.
Vertical Position
Vertical position places objects higher up in the composition to appear further away.VolumeVolume is the amount, expanse, extent, magnitude, size, aggregate, bulk, dimensions,or mass of an object. The volume variable indicates the amount of territory needed foreach object in a scene

Shape Analysis
Shape defines the external appearance of characters or things in media by giving recognizable forms. Especially distinctive outlines can be identified with less features- an example is the use of silhouettes, which applies only the outline of a figure in order to determine identity. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a great example of extensive use of shape; each character is very distinctly shapen, many taking the form of non-objective shapes. Most characters in the movie follow basic shapes that are simply squashed and stretched; for example, the Mayor of Halloween Town (highest placed character in second image, second right-most character in first image) follows the shape of a wide triangle, the clown (rightmost of second image) largely follows a squashed circular shape. The basic shapes that these characters follow are abstract shapes; they allow us to make assumptions about the characters based off inclinations surrounding those shapes. Non-objective shapes, though, are figures that follow no particular basic shape- the two characters left and rightmost of the first image are an example of this. Many variations of shapes are used to create the characters in The Nightmare Before Christmas, and each variation means something to either the character’s personality or the way the audience is supposed to perceive them. This movie is a good example in particular because the shapes of almost every character are so widely varied, and many assumptions about the characters can be made just based on the how the shapes are changed and placed.
Shape Terms
Shape: is the external form or appearance characteristic of someone or something; the outline of an area or figure. As a verb, to shape is to give a particular form. As artists, we shape our characters outward appearance by using shapes.
Abstract Shapes and Abstraction: (see Non-objective Shapes) means no recognizable objects. Abstraction is a sliding scale from realism to completely non representational. Abstract shapes can be used in backgrounds and textures. The background pattern in this Minecraft image is abstract. The character is still recognizable as a human, but the doctor’s human form is abstracted in the game of Minecraft to conform to the blocks of the game world.
Biomorphic: is a free-form pattern or design with a shape suggestive of a living organism, especially an amoeba or protozoan.
Curvilinear shapes: are s-curves. Curvilinear shapes inform Jessica Rabbit’s character design and can represent a winding river vanishing into the distance.
Distortion: is exaggeration, contortion, reform, slant, twist, or warp in ways that depart from reality. Look at the Minecraft Human body example. The figure of the Minecraft doctor is distorted by the shape of the blocks.
Idealism: asserts that the physical world is less important than the mind or the spirit which shapes and animates it. Idealists choose the soul, the mind, or the psyche over the body, the material, and the historical. When ideals (of appearance, or proportion for example) regulate the way an artist represents the world, her work can be described as Idealistic. The leading artists of the High Renaissance - Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo - are all associated with varying forms of Idealism, as were ancient Greek sculptors. Exploring with shape
In this post I will be analyzing the character designs of the Mr. Men children’s book series.

Variations in shape can be used in character design to emphasize certain traits. Curvilinear shapes are used in these designs to represent light-hearted characters while rectilinear shapes are used for characters with a more rigid personality. There is even the use of abstract shapes with Mr. Messy to emphasize his wacky personality. The silhouettes of each character is important in their design because it highlights their individuality as characters because of how identifiable they would be as just an outline.

Nikki my fallout queen please help me. I’m playing it on Xbox one and I have never dealt with mods before but I saw that the main screen now has like, add-ons and downloads and stuff. Anyways how do mods work? And do you have any that you recommend? Basically I don’t want to fuck up the game (or my console) and I’m worried about using them
Ahhh I just started playing with mods so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt. To get them you just click on “Mods.” And then when you find one you like you click on a mod and there’s an option to download them. They download themselves but the trouble comes when you have multiple ones. There’s apparently this thing called “load order” and basically you have to place some above the others or they’ll conflict with each other and it can fuck up your game (I’ve had to restart a couple times because my game just..broke lmao)
so if you have a lot of progress on a save I’d definitely back it up or avoid using mods on that one until you’re sure they work together (I have a “test character” I use for that purpose.
you can look up load order guides for consoles but honestly it confuses the heck out of me. On PC you can just download something that organizes your mod load order for you.. which dear god i wish consoles had it. They don’t though so you gotta do it manually.
basically ALWAYS read the entire description of a mod. sometimes certain mods won’t work with others and the creator will list them so you can avoid conflict. Sometimes they’ll tell you where the mod needs to be in the load order. Also it’s just important so you know what you’re getting into. I still haven’t figured out my load order. Rip. I just crash occasionally and deal with it but I want it fixed eventually.
I definitely recommend watching videos and reading guides on mods and load order for console because I’m new to this too.
as for recommendations. These aren’t all the mods I have and have tried but ones I think are the best Ones I have and I know for the most part don’t cause issues. I’ll list more in another post if you guys want? Or review them I guess heh
Fallout 4 unofficial patch (it’ll place itself where it needs to be which is at the top because it’s a Master File) it fixes 100’s of bugs Bethesda missed. It’s small and doesn’t conflict with anything really and doesn’t effect performance. You’ll probably forget you even have it installed.
Full Dialogue Interface: if you don’t like the original dialogue system this is wonderful. You know how in the vanilla (original) game the options are paraphrased? Like “sarcastic” and it doesn’t tell you what you’re going to say? This fixes that and tells you exactly what you’ll say. I love love it. One time I accidentally called Nick garbage because of the old system and I was deeply distraught lmao.
Everyone’s Best Friend. This lets you travel with a companion and Dogmeat at the same time. So apparently originally Bethesda meant to let Dogmeat travel with you AND a companion but it was scrapped last minute. The remnants of it are still presented in the game (dogmeat isn’t effected by live and love perks, lower health, the companions have dialogue and affinity reactions to you healing Dogmeat, etc) anyway I’ve never had any problems with this one and it’s just super fun. Also more carry weight (good for farming positive affinity too because healing him makes most companions happy. Excluding Strong and X6 who dislike it.)
SKK scrapper. If you do a lot of building this is a must have tbh lmao. I don’t think I could play without it now. Basically it automatically scraps your junk and there’s several options. It appears on a little holotape in your misc inventory and you can control it from there. It’s really easy and really useful. Sadly it doesn’t scrap weapons or armor though. You still gotta do that manually.
All Settlements Expanded: it makes your build area a lot bigger. There are alternate options for specific settlements if you don’t want to expand them all. I really like how the creator expanded a lot of them to water sources if possible cuz than I can make the big water purifiers lol.
Place Anywhere: it does just what it says. You can place objects just about anywhere. Inside things. In the air. Wherever. However I have noticed that since installing it some areas seem to have a glitch and I ironically can’t place things on them…like a bed because it goes right into the floor and doesn’t allow me to place things ON the floor. I can’t be positive this is Place Anywhere but I can’t think of anything else that would cause it. It’s not too big of a deal and so far I’ve only seen it happen in a couple of areas. I mostly ignore it and place stuff elsewhere but it might be a dealbreaker for some. Personally I think it’s worth a few glitches
Better Stores and Better Stores far harbor addition: gives you better options for stores. It also adds some really cool stuff for your settlements. You can buy Brahmin, guard mongrels, guard dogs, guard wolves, rad rabbits, rad chickens (I love these), radstags as livestock, mirelurk livestock…the Brahmin don’t seem to stick to their troughs like the vanilla game Brahmin though?
craftable ammo. I really like how balanced/lore friendly this is with the game. It doesn’t feel like cheating or “not immersive” because you need perks that make sense for different types of ammo (ex: nuclear physicist for nukes) and you need the materials to make it (and the materials make sense) It’s just really useful I think and should have been put in the original game.
Craftable Cats. It comes with a bunch of new cat colors and fur patterns. Calicos, orange tabbies, tuxedo, etc. you need one empty milk bottle to craft one. I’m just happy to see more variation.
k9 harness: tactical body armor and backpack for dogmeat: it’s super cute and can add a lot of carry weight for Dogmeat which is really useful.
Simple Settlers (mortal edition) I really love his one. It adds more varied settlers (so you don’t see the same faces over and over again) and also names them which I think is an awesome touch. You have the choice between a mortal and immortal addition depending on whether or not you want your settlers to be able to die.
Icebreaker Settlements: adds over 400 lines of new dialogue for settlers. Also has some other tweaks. Make sure to read the mod but its nothing too big.
Settlement Limits slashed: gets rid of your build limit!

oh! Quick addition: enhanced blood textures: if you’re like me and want more gore to your game. (It just makes the blood better looking and adds some more)

Semantics
“Because of problems with necessary and sufficient conditions, or definitions, several more sophisticated theories of concepts have been proposed. One influential proposal is due to Eleanor Rosch and her co-workers (e.g. Rosch 1973, 1975, Rosch and Mervis 1975, Rosch et al. 1976, Mervis and Rosch 1981) who have suggested the notion of prototypes. This is a model of concepts which views them as structured so that there are central or typical members of a category, such as BIRD or FURNITURE, but then a shading off into less typical or peripheral members. So chair is a more central member of the category FURNITURE than lamp, for example. Or sparrow a more typical member of the category BIRD than penguin. This approach seems to have been supported by Rosch’s experimental evidence: speakers tend to agree more readily on typical members than on less typical members; they come to mind more quickly, and so on. Another result of this and similar work (e.g. Labov 1973) is that the boundaries between concepts can seem to speakers uncertain, or “fuzzy,” rather than clearly defined. This approach allows for borderline uncertainty: an item in the world might bear some resemblance to two different prototypes.” [1]
Ricardo put us on the line of semantics in today’s lecture and I now see its relevance to what we are doing. In a way, we are playing with this idea of borderline uncertainty, we are attempting to generate something that can identify as two things yet not fit in at the same time. Looking at this kind of model as if it were creating a balance between to object. Cross species genetics of objects you could say, riding the boundaries of both objects. if you considered a perfect hybrid of both a wheelchair and skateboard. the prototypes we made earlier today would be variations that would resemble different levels of a pure and more definitive example.
An interesting concept that while is slightly abstracted from what we are doing is very much relevant. While this docent exactly help us in what we are currently doing adds to the basis of our underlying approach to the project.
“associations may be ones of form (i.e., shape, size, color, texture, and other sensory attributes such as sound or smell), of function (how the object works and to what purpose), of origin or development, and of time, place, and sequence. Once two objects are found to have some similar properties (e.g., round and capable of being thrown or kicked in a game), we are ready to generalize the particular objects into a class ("ball,"in this case). We are also ready to make distinctions based on the attributes of the objects that are not similar. So, a grapefruit to a child might appear to be, possibly, a ball, but its lack of durability a n d mother's scolding would soon disabuse the child of that notion. Becoming more sophisticated on the subject, the child would also note that grapefruit are grown on trees, whereas balls are not. Upon looking further into the subject, I found more evidence explicitly backing up the core concept of our project that is object association. While here we are talking about the meaning of words we can still say the objects themselves fall under them meaning of the words as that is their form of identity. What is interesting about this notation is that it docent stretch far from what we discovered in dismantling our objects, finding that they actually had more in common than not. While their purposes differed when it came down to functionality they were near the same in many ways. I would say in the objects are more so defined by what is not the same than what is as with the example of the ball and grapefruit. In principle them being the same yet their differences defining what their true purpose should be. As with the purposes of both our the skateboard and wheelchair one being related to freedom and the other restriction of movement.
“There are also the associations that nearly always accompany the factual, namely the emotional and valuative. We may feel friendly or unfriendly toward the object or that it is good or bad or reliable or treacherous or helpful or a hindrance, all depending on our past experience, including what we have been told about the object. These associations give us the connotative meanings of words, the suggested meanings that have an emotional content, and that often differentiate two with similar factual (denotative) meanings.”[3]
An example of emotional conative meanings towards an object can be seen back with the video we put alongside our manifesto. Throughout the spaces we took our prototype[e chair there were signs stating preconceived emotional attachment to the objects. Signs saying no skateboarding due to possibly the disturbance skateboarding can cause, this could possibly have been experienced by a customer or staff member in the past and hence the negative view towards the object and its user. Then the wheel access and parking signs. The wheel chair being associated with people with disability or suffering from an injury. This emphasizes the purpose of our project and its relevance to combining two objects that carry vastly different connotations with them.
