As an equestrian we learn that we love our animals big and still have to let them go. We learn early that we don’t let them suffer.
So today we say “see you later” to the dog that has been my rock for 19 years. The one I’ve never ever tried so hard to find another home for (he was a foster fail), the only one to ever properly toilet paper my house, the one who nonchalantly escaped and wandered neighborhoods for years scaring the life out of me, the dog who has never met someone that didn’t like him, the dog so like a cat he cleans his face after every meal, my little anomaly that could jump the moon from a standstill when his confirmation said it was impossible, my barn buddy who bonded with the biggest mare and looked for her every time, my boy who’s ears flopped brown and black when he ran, my killer of snakes, lover of all other animals, teacher of all new dogs, the only thing I took in the middle of the night during a breakup, my travel buddy, the co owner of our grey blanket, the sensitive dog that worked for people in public that didn’t know they needed him. My completely stubborn boy. His huffs of disdain will be missed so much. His look of disgust if you loved him and he didn’t want it. You join the great pups before you Colt. I know you will send me the best of the best after. But there will NEVER be another like you.
