THE RETURN OF COVID Horror/thriller movie style!! I don't think I could find enough words to express how much I love doing those posters............ For this one, I felt like the cast of "antagonists" of the movie would make for a pretty awesome composition and mood, and paired with the church setting I think I got something pretty interesting, haha. More below!
As it happens, a fandom friend asked if I could maybe some day record my process, and therefore I did! (and went the extra mile adding goofy horror songs to it...) Check it out if you're interested :)

I've detailed it in the YT vid description as well, but my process is rather straightforward. I tend to be a "lazy person" in that I like to, ideally, spend the least time possible on anything, and so far this process is how I've best achieved that while still managing some rather complex pieces. I like to be extremely rough with my sketches and prioritize dynamism and composition, and I usually take my time repositioning the characters until I'm satisfied before I go any further. I don't have the best mental visualization so I usually try to have a very rough idea of what I want before I directly jump to sketching and mostly ideate there. The lineart is very straightforward as well. I come back later to adjust line thickness here and there but otherwise I just "trust my brush". The fake fisheye perspective is entirely wrong and made up so I needed some custom perspective lines to know roughly how to position the background elements.
I do come back with composition guides after I'm done with the lineart, just to check how the illustration is doing. I prefer not to use them at first because it tends to "constrain" me a bit too much, and I like to remain very free as to maintain a feeling of spontaneity, which is why I will only fix the composition afterwards (when I do). Coloring is then fairly streamlined, with background colors/atmosphere guiding the overall color scheme followed by character coloring and additional details. The most fun part comes with the post-processing, where I go wild with additional fog and light shaft layers to add depth to the entire thing. I use a bunch of additional tone curve layers to adjust the colors and make it more uniform, as well as one blurred, flattened copy of the illustration with strengthened contrasts, in overlay mode, to add some vibrance, and a noise layer for texture. The Romanticism of One Piece III: Emotionality and the Absurd

After opening with Roger’s death in chapter one, the perspective of the manga immediately switches to focus on our main protagonist, whose first action we see is of him stabbing himself in the face in order to look cool. The introductory panel of Luffy is one of childish, absurd determination. His mouth alone takes up over half his face. It looks a bit silly, and after patching him up, Shanks just…laughs.

The Romantics, on the whole, were not silly people, but they were bursting at the seams with emotion. If you read a Romantic novel expect the characters to spend a great deal of time soliloquizing about their feelings. If you look at a Romantic painting expect bold colors and dynamism composition. If you listen to a Romantic musician expect songs that are passionate and full of energy, unrestrained from traditional forms. In a word, these people were extra. Specifically, the Romantics embraced the full spectrum of human emotion, from the depths of despair in a work like the Sorrows of Young Werther to the heights depicted within the essays of the American transcendentalism movement. 
This heightened emotionalism of the Romantics always trumped over what was realistic or scientific. For example, look at a work like Jane Eyre. While melodramatic, it’s a work that ostensibly takes place in the real world. Yet the most emotionally-charged moments introduce supernatural elements, including reuniting the main couple at the end when Jane randomly hears Mr. Rochester speak her name on the wind from halfway across the country. 
And by random, I truly do mean random. It’s difficult to put into words how out of left field this is for the reader. There are only a few pages left in the book, and by this time the main couple has spent more time apart than together and had no reason to believe they’d ever be reunited. But their love becomes a literal supernatural force strong enough for Jane to rush after him without hesitation, and they live happily ever after.

(Please, I beg of you to watch the last 10 minutes of this movie. It was one of the most unintentionally hilarious experiences of my life).
It’s an extreme and slightly goofy example, but what is One Piece if not extreme and slightly goofy? It’s a story that, at its most fundamental level, makes you feel. We all know the pain of crying over a boat, and what makes the death of the Merry, along with any other number of things that should be stupid but aren’t, is Oda’s commitment to sincerity. Emotional truth trumps logic, always. It’s why we celebrate characters like Bellmere who can’t not call herself a mother, even if it costs her her life. The bond of found family is more powerful than the logical choice of denouncing Nami and Nojiko. Oda had other characters try to inject logic into Bellmere’s decision after the fact, but there’s no evidence from Bellemere herself that she was behaving logically, and we love her for it.

The artstyle itself emphasizes emotional truth over realism. Oda is more than capable of drawing in a more realistic or traditionally “cool” style if he wanted to, but it would be to the detriment of the story he’s trying to tell. Every smile takes up half a character’s face. People who are crying are portrayed as sniveling wrecks. Their fury becomes palpable, their hopelessness gut-wrenching, their joy contagious. Oda chose very early on not to give Luffy thought bubbles, and in the absence of knowing what he’s thinking, it was absolutely imperative that the audience knew what he’s feeling. The few times his expression becomes ambiguous immediately stand out and lend a scene a sense of weight that borders on unease.
This expressiveness doesn’t stop with the character designs. Oda will tweak perspective to make important people or places seem even larger than they really are. Buildings will follow Loony Toons logic if a gag calls for it. Locations and ships, particularly once the crew reaches the Grand Line, become absurd and impossible.

But for One Piece, it’s in this absurdity that the impossible becomes possible, through sheer force of will. Luffy is on every level ridiculous, but it’s because he’s ridiculous that he chooses at every turn to keep fighting against forces that by all rights should be impossible to defeat. Many of Luffy’s most despicable enemies are the ones who in some way or another have taken away other people’s ability to feel as they wish. Arlong took away Nami’s happiness and made her cry. Crocodile stole Vivi’s ability to smile. The zombies of Thriller Bark are reduced to mindless slaves while the toys under Doflamingo’s rule are physically unable to emote. And perhaps most powerfully of all, the people of Wano and the slaves of the Celestial Dragons are both forced to smile despite their horrific circumstances, a bastardization of the joy Luffy brings no matter where he goes. 
In his prelude to the Lyrical Ballads, William Wordsworth wrote that, “All good poetry is the overflow of powerful emotion”. He linked emotion to motion, or action, with the catalist between the two being the creative power of imagination. While many of Luffy’s fights are ultimately won because he’s able to punch another person real good, the seemingly limited ability of the gum-gum fruit forces him to come up with increasingly-creative ways in which one can stretch, until he’s able to stretch the fabric of reality itself to bend to his whims. It is said, in all the world, that there is no power more ridiculous.

At the end of chapter 218 a galleon falls from the sky, and Oda quotes fictional physicist Willy Karen, stating, “Anything man can imagine is a possibility in reality.” It is through the power of imagination and absurdity that Luffy fights against the forces of oppression. There is nothing more dangerous to an institution than losing its credibility, and nothing so dangerous to one’s credibility than the power of mockery. If one can face the darkest, most difficult times and still laugh then, well, they become a little less dark and difficult. By laughing, and helping others to do the same, it becomes easier to make it through another day. It’s important, I think, that Oda has emphasized the act of laughing so much, drawing attention to it by virtue of giving out unique laughs all throughout the series.
One Piece has the reputation of being "the silly pirate manga". This isn’t untrue, but it does a disservice to the breadth of feeling the series inspires. As I said, we’ve all cried over a boat. Slavery, oppression, and every sort of hardship exist within the One Piece world just as much as it does our own.

Oda’s answer is to combat these things with the silly and the absurd, by being creative and imaginative while pursuing one’s passions with one’s whole heart, no matter where those passions may lead. He tells the reader you have the right to feel as you wish and pursue joy wherever you may. And when you run up against resistance, you fight like hell for what you believe in. 
And as it turns out, that’s a Romantic virtue, too.

Now that Critical Role has dropped an entire album, and not just an EP, I thought I’d do a short & sweet review. Nothing crazy, no ratings or anything, just for fun
Overall Impressions: it’s a fun, if incredibly niche, holiday album. They know their audience, and they’re playing directly to them. I feel like they struck a good balance between parodies and original compositions. I love that each cast member got their own song, even those that may not be as confident in their singing. The ballads really stand out, and end up being 3 of my top 4 songs
Track 1: Winter’s Crest Welcome (spoken word by Matt Mercer): a nice little intro/lore dump. I think it’s cool that Winter’s Crest is going international (likely thanks to Taste of Tal’Dorei lbr)
Track 2: Winter’s Crest Festival Time (Matt Mercer as Pumat Sol): when I tell you this song has been in my head for weeks. Fun and catchy and a little silly. Matt sounds great even in a goofy character voice. The bridge where he’s in (I think) four part harmony with himself? Wild
Track 3: Silent Mind (Laura Bailey as Imogen Temult): my favorite song off the album, to the surprise of absolutely no one. I knew Laura could sing, but goddamn. Chills
Track 4: Naughty & Nice (Sam Riegel as Scanlan Shorthalt): Sam has such a great voice for a jazzy, sexy song like this. And they really nailed the vibe, I knew it was a Scanlan song immediately
Track 5: Nothin’ Under the Tree (Taliesin Jaffe as Ashton Greymoore): this song rocks, pun fully intended. I never knew I needed a Christmas song I could headbang to until now. And Taliesin sounds fantastic. I fucking love it
Track 6: O Mighty Nein (Liam O’Brien as Caleb Widogast): oh, Liam, my heart. This song is so sweet and beautiful, and I was almost in tears by the end
Track 7: Twelve Days of Grogmas (Travis Willingham as Grog, feat. Ashley Johnson as Pike): it’s fun, it’s stupid, it’s catchy as hell. Another earworm that’s been in my head since it dropped. It is so perfectly Grog, and Pike’s little asides are the icing on the cake
Track 8: Cold Inside (Marisha Ray as Laudna, feat. Matt Mercer as Pate, Sam Riegel as FCG, Travis Willingham as Chetney, and Laura Bailey as Imogen): knowing that Marisha is likely the cast member that is least confident in their singing abilities, I’m so glad she did this song. Laudna is the perfect vehicle too, her character voice is more distinct than Keyleth or Beau, and she has a flair for the dramatic that Marisha can really lean into without worrying about how she sounds. For a song that people were advertising as an Imodna song, I wasn’t expecting it to be so funny. I think my favorite bit was the deadpan “I think that’s just arson, Chetney”. And then Imogen coming in at the end, you can just hear the eye roll and the fond smile
Track 9: Winter Anymore (Ashley Johnson as Yasha Nydoorin): this song is so achingly tender and yearning. Ashley has such a gorgeous voice, I’m in awe. I was initially unsure if she was singing as Yasha or Pike, but I love that the lyrics could apply to both. I love that despite the overall sadness of the song, there’s still an air of hope
Track 10: Deck the Bear (Liam O’Brien as Vax’ildan and Laura Bailey as Vex’ahlia, feat. the rest of the cast as Vox Machina and Matt Mercer as Trinket): another silly, goofy one, though admittedly this one is my least favorite from the album. I do like the ensemble song, and Matt’s bear noises are incredible as always (will he ever feature in a song not in a character voice? spoiler alert: yes lol)
Track 11: It’s Critmas (Critical Role cast as themselves): yet another earworm. This was tied with Silent Mind for my favorite song from the EP, and it’s still definitively in the top 4. Again, I love the ensemble, and everyone getting their moment. It’s catchy, it’s fun. It’s Critmas

the panels in this ep genuinely are really great they're not terribly over the top besides a few and i think thats a good balance,,, i especially like the focus on the chief's reaction to all the changes that are going on in his life now that they have the choice of an alternative method (well,,, choice is said loosely LMFAO)
coming from last episode of lloyd going "oh yeah i love peace im a pacifist :)" to telling the demon kids "hey sometimes. theres people u need to beat up a bit. and people u need to beat up a LOT" and IT MAKES ME SMILE THAT THE KIDS TOOK THAT TO HEART HAHAHA

genuinely his poses in this ep are so stupid funny i love them sm . recently we've been seeing a lot of his face being Totally Evil Exaggeration or Seriously Going Through It but these goofy ass salesman poses and expressions are SOMETHING ELSE HAHA GOOD CHANGE OF PACE
and it's not like he's forcing their hand he's just stopping their usual avenues, bc he juuust so happens to be working in the area now for magentano,,,, honestly i think he would have put the chief into a corner at some point eventually, but it also seems like lloyd's efforts had also affected other aspects of the chief's life, like his relationship w his family and the other veneto hunters,,, which may have put the chief in the corner early,,, a matter of time, i suppose,,,?
like the chief had a lot of very like remorseful / realization type expressions in this ep, i really liked this one in particular,

and (okay i guess we're diving into the main thoughts now) i think now that i have the context of this ep for the previous week's ep, it kind of paints a picture of what exactly it was the adaptation team was going for. the venetos are prideful and rooted in inconvenient traditional ways, and lloyd's plan is a type of interference that twists that pride one way or another (though i dont think the chief feeling remorse after seeing his wife and child finally being okay with him was a part of lloyds plans LOL)
it,,, makes sense! and while yes it's due to lloyd's interference, it also feels like the chief is making a decision himself here, (in,,, in a way?) (not sure how to explain what i mean by that) like the chief absolutely sees how bad things had gotten under his original policies and outlook, and then saw the immediate change from just... changing the way they acquire goods. i really liked watching that happen, and it helps characterize him as someone who is so incredibly stubborn but really wants the best for his people, and the best he had known at that point was what they had done all this time.
this does makes me wish that ep 178 was handled with a lot more tact and awareness of what they are setting up for. i think if ep 178 had a similar tone as ep 179, it would have been received a bit better, maybe,,, of course i wouldn't know for sure, and i'm not sure how i'd rewrite it myself, but i think 179 handles the line between moments of thought and moments of gags a lot better than 178 (if that makes any sense). because of this, the chief in 179 feels different than the chief in 178,,, i would feel better about 179 showing his redemption process if 178 had been handled with just a bit more care. i don't think we needed to see a man bully/verbally abuse his family to show that the venetos are traditional in a detrimental way,,, while also nearly presenting everyone as a gag at that? man idk,,,
i'm not entirely sure still, maybe i'm just being sensitive or something, but regardless (and again), 179 feels a lot better than 178 so i'm really hoping this arc finishes strong,,,
anyway serious thoughts aside! WHEN LLOYD PULLED OUT THE CONTRACT I KNEW IT WAS OVER LLOYD HAD WON ALDKFJSDFHHAHAAAAA

Mickey was nervous. Really nervous. His hands shook as he tried to calm his nerves. But nothing helped. Ian had his hand on the man’s thigh and could feel the nervous quivers run through it. “We should just go home. I’m fine.” Mickey said.
“No, Mick. We need to get this tooth fixed.”
“Mikhailo Milkovich?” A hygenist called his name. Mickey stood and his husband followed. “Are you joining us?” The woman asked Ian.
“Yes. This is my husband.” Ian says with a soft smile, his hand on Mickey’s back. The woman nods and leads them down a corridor. It was sterile and had fluorescent lights on the ceiling with some private exam rooms lining the side.
“We’re gonna snap some X-rays first.” She turned into a room with a computer, a chair, a few cabinets, and a big X-ray camera. “Take a seat in the chair for me.” Mickey sat. Ian stood just outside the room watching as the woman laid a heavy led apron on his husband. She grabbed a bite wing from a drawer and covered a sensor in some plastic. She arranged all of that in Mickey’s mouth and brought the camera to his cheek. She stepped out of the room next to Ian and clicked a button. “All done!” She re-entered the room and removed everything from Mickey’s mouth, and hung the apron back on the wall. She then led the couple into a secluded exam room and had Mickey lay down in the chair. The chair. Everyone knew that chair. The squishy pleather that smelled of chemicals and dead dreams. “Dr. Banks will be right with you.” The woman left the room.
“I’m gonna puke.” Mickey said, nervously looking over to his husband who stood next to him. Ian leaned down and kissed the raven-haired man’s forehead.
“It’s ok. I know you’re nervous. Just try to take deep breaths ok? And you know Dr. Banks is always sweet. You’ll be ok, my love.” Ian grabbed Mickey’s hand and squeezed it tight. He sat in a chair off to the side and nodded reassuringly as Dr. Banks walked in.
“Hey! It’s my two favorite patients.” She smiled softly and pulled on some gloves. “How are we?”
“Great. Thanks Doc.” Ian smiled softly. She looked at Mickey who still hadn’t responded.
“I take it someone’s nervous?” She spoke softly, sitting down on her rolling stool as she put her mask up. She leaned around and clicked around on the computer.
“Yeah. Quite a bit.” Mickey managed.
“No need to be. I looked at your X-rays, and it’s just a cavity. Pretty small, no big deal. All I’m gonna do is numb you up, clean out the affected area, and fill the hole.”
“Question Doc.” Ian spoke, his tone sounding like he had a plan. “What’s that loopy gas stuff you put on the little kids when they won’t calm down?”
“Nitrous? God I remember putting Carl on that one too many times when you guys were young.” She chuckled. “What about it?”
“Could you give some of that to Mick? Maybe it’ll help calm his nerves.” Ian said, glancing at Mickey.
“Wait what? You want her to get me high off some goofy bubblegum gas so I’m dazed out and she can rip my fuckin’ teeth out?”
“Mick, no. It’ll just calm you down a little.” Ian said, trying to calm his husband.
“We could try it. And I don’t actually have bubblegum flavor, I hate to break it.” Dr. Banks smiled.
“Fine…” Mickey said, tone similar to a reluctant adolescent. Dr. Banks then began the process of filling Mickey’s cavity. She hooked him up to the nitrous and began prepping her tray. She inserted the drill bit into her hand piece, prepped the composite gun, and the bonding material. Ian held Mickey’s hand, but watched intently and she locked into her work.
“Open wide Mickey…” Dr. Banks’ voice was soft and relaxed. She’d done this tons of times before. She gently administered the novocaine through a needle into the gums near Mickey’s tooth. She removed the nitrous mask from his face and placed a pair of sunglasses on Mickey’s eyes before waving on her light. She slipped her loops over her eyes and turned on her drill. She slowly started to drill away the affected area of the tooth while shooting water into Mickey’s mouth with her air water device. She had the suction hanging on the edge of his cheek sucking up water and bits of decayed tooth. She worked precisely and quickly, her movements practiced and perfect. She set her drill down and rinsed the hole. She dried it with air, and suctioned any extra moisture away. She then laid bonding and filled the hole, curing with blue light after.
“Is it done…?” Ian asked softly.
“All done.” Dr. Banks said with a nod. Mickey had fallen asleep in the chair.

Heya guys, ymoved blogs (@garden-view-research-teams), this is a new blog you can actually send asks in.Well, This is kind of a new AU and Blog that polishes out the flaws and inconsistencies with the old AU that was shadowbanned and said blog will be deleted. What's the Survival! AU about? Basically the original Toons (aka the ones we play in-game) are slowly being twisted and taking the effects of the Ichor Operation as Dandy went missing right after. The Toon are separated in different teams as they face the other twisteds accidentally created by Dandy himself as they try to find out whatever happened.

-Please start your ask either like "To (Toon)", or "To (Team)", and no "Can you hug me"s or "Can I give you cookies". (sorry-)
-You CAN give the toons things or even magics anon (tho no timeline/untwisting)

The first team made, Toodles isn't allowed to go on Runs often due to Rodger wanting to protect her, but when she is, Pebble has to go, too. Though if he goes wild, then Poppy and Boxten are alone or have to move to another team. With all of that aside, these guys know how to finish floors fast.
TEAM CLEANS O' JOY

These Toons know how to be prepared! Defending from twisteds and doing their jobs very well. They can get rather distracted at times…With that so, the team knows to support eachother and keep going no matter what!
TEAM BRIGHTS O' AQUATIC (My favorites-)

They're not the best…but not the worst too (if you don't count Shrimpo I guess). This team's compositions is just for Toons that aren't too well liked (minus Astro and Brightney, god pray that this team isn't going down). They CAN get the job done, just expect several problems on the way.

This team's…..well they're quite…"unique" to put it lightly. Despite Flutter's weird staring habit and Sprout being a bit wild at times, this team does try to work things out. Razzle and Dazzle may not agree on everything, even in dire situations, but they're better than Team Brights o' Aquatic anyway.

Now, a little exictement and a little complain. Good thing - Expression!!! Bad thing - the range of expression is limited, unfortunately. They could have add a centered mouth like in Sonic Superstar and Sonic Dream Team. Also it seems that Shadow will scream a lot there, so a mouth that can open large could work best.

I personally genuinely liked Hell of a Summer! I thought it was a campy good time and I vibed with the humor of the film. It was a blast watching it in a packed house at a sold out Q&A event as I think that really added to the experience. It would probably be a deferent experience if I just saw it alone. I think I just generally enjoy the campy slasher genre so it didn’t disappoint me and met expectations. My main criticism is some of the technical stuff like lighting and shot composition, but I’m sure that will be improved in future films. Maybe I’m biased as a Finn stan, but I think in a neutral sense I had a good time and can’t complain. It wasn’t high art but it wasn’t trying to be

I'm glad you had fun. I do think that the type of crowd you see a film with can really affect how you view it. There were a couple of people in my theater really getting into it which made it a little more fun. There was stuff to enjoy about it. There were jokes that worked for me and some of the performances was great. Like I said in my tags, Fred Hechinger was awesome and I'm glad he was the lead for this movie.
I'll give a more thorough review below:
I also enjoy the campy slasher genre, and agree that they weren't aiming for high art, but that doesn't mean that films like that can't also be well made? Neon released a list of the film's influences on letterboxd, and while I can see where they were trying to be like those other films, I just don't think they were able to replicate what made those films great.
The movie has a lot of tropey and cliche characters, because the films they reference have tropey and cliche characters. Although those films were able to better utilize and subvert those tropes. These tropes aren't subverted so much as I feel like they were included because they are popular tropes. They do a little something with the popular kids trope, but not nearly enough with it.
A lot of the humor is character based, and since the writing is not very strong, there is a lot of reliance on the actor to make these jokes funny. Fred Hechinger is a strong lead, and Abby Quinn, Daniel Gravelle and Matthew Finlan are other standouts. The weakest actors... were probably Finn and Billy.
Billy was better than Finn and got some laughs out of me, and I respected that Billy was able to be a bit more self deprecating and goofy in his role. I wish Finn was able to do the same with his character, instead of making himself a master pussy eater who majors in Gender Studies. This is just kind of a personal nitpick rather than a critique, but I always like it when directors of horror movies cast themselves as schlubs who end up with a grisly death (see Ti West in X or Osgood Perkins in The Monkey).
I think good films can be made with low budgets, but man, I could really feel it with this movie. There was a lot of weird editing decisions that made it clear they were trying to do the best with what footage they had (and I speak from experience with my own work that I made it school LOL). Most of the kills were done off screen or just out of frame, making them lose a lot of their impact and scare factor. It was pretty obvious early on which characters were safe from death (like I said, Billy and Finn couldn't bring themselves to kill off their own characters) so I didn't feel a lot of stakes. It felt like the movie was just trudging along, checking off different slasher/comedy check points as it went by.
Like I said in my OG post, it's not bad for a debut feature by a 20 year old, but I think if Finn really wants to be a good director he has a lot of work to do. I like Finn well enough, but I feel like the success of this movie is reliant on his industry pull and fanbase rather than his skill and artistry. I think he can become a better filmmaker, but he's going to need to start putting in more effort than just coasting by and letting his fame get a Neon release.

this is a really interesting question [to me at least] because there isn’t really a “correct” answer. There's too many factors at play within Iris and she doesn't really have time to form an identity. I think ppl are free to interpret my version of the character however they like!
I use she and they when talking about Iris because 2 of the 4 components that comprise her feel very strongly about being referred to as such and it feels weird [to me] to do otherwise.

This one caught me off guard tbh, I’m wondering what tipped you off haha. My IRL friends joke that she is, but in-universe, the turtle is unlabelled and does not actively seek out any kind of companionship. Although, that may be mostly due to her being a machine and not wanting to have to outlive somebody. If she were to one day have a partner in defending the universe, they’d probably need to have a lot in common with her and be pretty much immortal.

so I have actually been asked this (privately) before, which is funny because while i have been intentionally kinda vague about them, I’ve also only ever referred to them as allies or friends. But then again, they live on a spaceship together so I understand why there's a question.
I mean, I could go on a whole long tangent about how they’re both aliens with alien ideas about relationships and gender, or how Viras‘ history and being a composite complicates everything and makes it hard to define exactly what’s going on. But to be honest, that’s mostly just me trying to skirt around the question and over-complicating things when the answer is yes. Well….sorta. They’ve got a long history, are certainly deeply codependent and are very invested in keeping the other alive. I have a lot written for them in terms of the background for how they ended up so close and I try to lightly sprinkle it into my posts, but again I know that’s not really what most people are interested in and I don’t want to bore them. Depending on how this post goes over, I might make their dynamic a bit more overt in some of my comics…. They are the most fun to draw interacting and I find there to be something oddly wholesome about them.

Beast Wars First Watch - Complete
I almost teared up at the end. 52 episodes of a old ass Transformers show. For a primitive CGI show about toys beating each other up from 1996 it holds up like REALLY. The issue is that we're in the year 2024 and it's very understandable that it wouldn't be easy to go and watch janky polygons for 52 episodes. So if anyone was interested in Beast Wars but couldn't go past the first episode because how weird everything looks, here's what helped me:
This is the second CGI tv show ever to air on TV, so give it a break.
1996...Beast Wars was animated by Mainframe. And their first CGI show in 1994 was called Reboot the first ever CGI show ever made. Sure when Toy Story came out and changed the game in 1995, they worked within their limitations. All the toys were plastic for a reason. They were very simple. Beast Wars said fuck that and in each 20 minute episodes contain characters with various textures, performing complex animations during whatever tv schedule they were on. If you ever spotted a character's face or body sliding when it's not supposed to, they were probably running out of time or there's an error that just couldn't be fixed as easily as it could now. I studied Maya in college years ago and I'm telling you rendering was a bitch if your sequence was long. Keeping in mind with what the team had to work with or possibly even invent on their own was just enough for me to be massively impressed. Our standards for CGI in TV have risen over the course of the years. We had Transformers Prime in 2010, 2015 Miraculous Ladybug premiered, CGI films became experimental such as Spiderverse and Puss in Boots. So think of Beast Wars as an early part of history in animation. It's nice to see how far we've come.
If you crave a silly time, this is for you. Whatever choices the animator's made were really funny (not the ones they had no control over), or just bizarre. When you get used to the style, over the course of the series the animation of the characters start becoming more expressive. Season 2 I think Megatron got increasingly expressive with his body movements. Whoever was animating him, they were having a lot of fun (at leas that's what it seems like). Inferno is a character to keep an eye on because he does a lot of fun motions with his body too. I kept losing my shit on the choices on how they animated in certain scenes. Kept me entertained until the very end.
2. Banger Voice Acting
The voice acting is one of the standouts from this show. Though the animation may not hold up well, the voice acting does. Garry Chalk is such a sassy young Optimus. A bit more fun than the young Optimus Prime that David Kaye (oh shit I just realized he's Megatron in Beast Wars...wow yeah this guy has range) plays in Transformers Animated if you were looking for anything similar like that. You'll still get some goofy 90's voice acting though like with Dinobot and Terrorsaur, even Rattrap but I think it's part of it's charm. I once again bring up Megatron as a reason to watch this show. The way this man delivers his lines is just *chef's kiss*
3. Fun and Weirdly Dark...
After finishing the series holy shit. I cannot fathom how you have a show with a rollerblading t-rex AND a decent onscreen death count. Hanna-Barbara cartoon noises alongside characters being constantly impaled and ripped apart (sometimes its for a teehee haha but then spin it around adding in some tension and that sweet composition and suddenly its not so funny anymore). Shakespeare. I don't know if it was just me but I couldn't predict most of what would happen next. Because being a high budget show to sell toys...knowing the 1986 movie...these characters aren't safe. I lost my shit, multiple times. More than I thought it would. Before finishing this show I did sneak a peek at what other people had said about Beast Wars and what was constantly being said was that nearly every episode was important to the over all plot of the series. And it's true! You miss an episode and you might be a little confused. I wanna know how kids who were first tuning into the show after a couple characters die and what their thoughts were...cause it's not like Batman Animated where you could watch the show in any order and be fine. Even before the box sets were released too.
Overall in the year 2024, I love Beast Wars. Obviously it's a product of it's time and no doubt has its flaws. But, that's what happens with a lot of beloved older series. Out of all the Transformers stories I've been watching/reading the past few months, Beast Wars got the biggest reactions out of me. It's also the one I had a lot of fun with because it's so unhinged and goofy/bizarre. I cannot stress that enough. Because Transformers is already bizarre enough and Beast Wars shot past it for me. How is Beast Machines gonna go after it???
I dunno. It's next on my list.

I...yeah Beast Machines is next for me. I am gonna miss the silly polygons of the original Beast Wars crew. NGL I thought I had one more episode since the youtube playlist said 53. There must have been a double episode or something. I am aware that Beast Wars had complications later on in its run. Similar to TFP so it's obvious to say that I think they needed at least like two max three more episodes for certain plot points and just...character life span. No shit I would have wanted one more season. The lil ol 12 episodes and a 45 minute special at least. Dude...Dinobot 2...when that clone came back for a while, I really didn't think they were gonna do anything with him. There weren't any reactions to Dinobot coming back from the Maximals other than...a Pred...always a Pred...so I'm like okay Dinobot 2...different character...I don't need to think about it. Thanks for pulling my heartstrings show...really gotta push me off the ledge when I'm not looking huh? Man finds his honor, do his good deed after being released from the grasp of Megatron's control....looks at Optimus to fully remember himself and FUCKING DIES IN THE END...AGAIN???? That's so cruel. owie.
Tigerhawk after over 20 episodes an INSANE character reveal and clever way of bring back two characters for the price of one (because they can only afford so many voice actors and animate so many characters). This was a good concept. I would have loved to see it be explored...IF THEY DIDN'T DIE...AGAIN. Especially Airazor can't catch a break...this poor woman.
Okay bye Death Charge. You got what you wanted. At least he technically didn't die in vain? The shock that Rampage just let it happen...yeah those two are a character study.
dsafghjghtrjy yeah give Waspinator what he wants. The potentially immortal robot a good ending. At least he's not evil anymore????? Man does not care his former coworker's body parts are used as musical instruments and cooking ware.
This show has a higher onscreen character death than Transformers Prime (Vehicons don't count). Sheesh. Transformers die...a lot. However, Beast Wars surprised me the most with it. I noted from above that these characters get shot, torn apart, flattened?, and beaten senselessly throughout the show. So when a character dies for good its somewhat shocking in my opinion.
All the love for Blackarachnia. I was in constant fear about her character because I couldn't tell what was going to happen. There was a good chance she would either die or disappoint and become Megatron's goon again. The best version is her Transmetal upgrade and recognizing the design as inspiration for Blackarachnia in Transformers Animated. I screamed when I saw her design. I was so happy. I love her and Silverbolt. What a healthy relationship.
This is a show I do want to rewatch it at some point and even just...be one of those people that make a 45 minute video essay some day. I want physical copies but the site where they supposedly sold it is...not there last time I checked? Which is odd because I had a paper ad for it on the TFP blue-rays I got for my birthday.
Also...I do like this series better than Transformers Prime...not because it's better overall, like if you seen it, you know. Also just rewatching Prime simultaneously cemented my feelings about it. I still love both though. Prime is close to my heart since it's what I grew up with, but Beast Wars has a Dino on rollerskates and Optimus Prime as a blue gorilla riding a hoverboard...like...idk man. I just think it's neat.

Okay, first Ultraman monster done-it's Gomora. Gonna start with the classic/iconic ones.
So, for the description parts of these posts, I might just throw down some of my design notes, since they give explanations for design choices and little bits of the "lore" that'll help some of the art make a bit more sense.
I thought it’d be funny if there’s like a “Sinister Six” (goofy Spiderman comparison, but bear with me) of Kaiju who have personal beef with Stellar…
Gomora, an awkward teenager in Dad’s time, now a full-grown adult (inspired by his “Prince of the Monsters” fan title). He wants a proper fight with Ultraman now he’s a lot stronger. I’m thinking maybe his tail is supposed to pop off, like it does this thing where it acts independently almost every time it get severed (“Uggh! I have it go and catch it again!”). Odd choice for a running gag but whatever.
And I know people are gonna be like “Umm Ackually Gomora shoots a heat ray from his nose, he doesn’t really breathe fire”, but screw you it’s my AU I do what I want.
His design is gonna be pretty close to the source material, dunno what the texture on his belly is supposed to be, looks kinda rocky? Might have a visible “break line” like on those lizards that can regrow tails (maybe that’s the irl inspiration? That would actually explain why the tail tends to move around afterwards). His past design was much smaller and thinner, and less spiky, to convey him being younger.
A long while back, some villagers discovered strange markings outside of a cave and decided to investigate, finding a wounded female inside protecting her egg. Some of the villagers would check on them as the mom would dip further into the cave to hunt for food. Eventually she didn’t come back and those villagers attempted to raise the teenage monster by bringing him offerings of food. Someone raised the alarm and that’s when STAR came in. This was in the middle of Stellar’s active hero career, so he went pretty soft on the juvenile Gomora, allowing the team to tranq and relocate him.
I am kinda liking the full illustration style for the concept art, even though it means the art takes a fair bit longer to make. Not sure if all my monster drawings are gonna be like this, or just ones where I'm recording a speed paint. I'll see how it goes. This illustration probably takes up a bit too much space here but it's an interesting composition.

Can you share a little bit about your art process? I'm curious to know about how you use references and how you figure out compositions. Your pieces are always so nice to look at and I love how you post a full piece and then a close up, and both of those look really nice on their own.

(hooo this is long. sorry I love 2 chat.)
well it's multiple factors; in regards to being able to crop a close up and having that work as its own image, that's thanks to the scale the digital medium allows with ease; if these were traditional pencil drawings they would have to be pretty fucking big to have that much detailing on the face, and that in turn would make the drawing process different as you'd be having to step back often, but it's a lot easier digitally to just zoom in back and forth, check things are working from zoomed in and out, flip the image to see things with fresh eyes and make sure things are looking alright etc. I've been drawing on paper for years, and mostly draw/paint in a completely different style to how I do for my fanart, so coming in to digital and seeing it as a hugely different beast actually kinda helps in that sense (tho I'd say most of the time the digital thing really hinders me).
on that digital vs traditional note though, I take pretty much all of my inspiration from traditional artists, so when I'm drawing fanart I'm thinking about how I want the drawing to give me the feeling and sorta composition that those pieces I admire have, whether it's more modern queer and fetish art or old masters and book illustrators. it's having an awareness that the human brain wants to focus in on a face or find eyes, getting as much emotion across in that area but also being conscious and having fun of the potential narrative telling of other details and what the body is doing, sewing in your own symbolism.
for figuring out poses, I have a visual mind, I can see compositions pretty well in my head, so for example; if someone who is commissioning something states the details they would like in a piece, I can usually tell without beggining the sketching stage that, for example, maybe they wouldn't be able to see the hand they want doing something specific if characters were interacting that way and we were seeing their faces as well, or you wouldn't be able to see one of their faces, and if you value seeing their expressions maybe let's chose what you prioritise in terms of what the viewer sees. idk what to give in terms of advice for that, I'm lucky I've got a photographic brain when it comes to stuff like drawing or other boons it grants me irl (but I'm useless with numbers and words so, it balances out).
as for reference I feel like I've touched on this a few times: reference is great! it's important if you're doing the style of drawing I'm doing here (but I also really love work that is more stylised as well, i love folk art and goofy and expressive things) at this point for the likes of Imogen and laudna (and I'm getting there with fearne) - I've drawn them so many times that I just reference myself, and if there's a specific expression I'm needing then I keep a shaving mirror near by and look at myself, same with hands, they're right there, draw straight from em or take a photograph (saying this I am not good at hands lol). other than that yes I will often look for reference of something that roughllly resembles what I wish to draw in terms of posing, and then it's a mixture of kinda treating the reference images like a frankenstein paper doll with metal pin joints and arranging them how I need, but as I've also said before I like to not have a 1:1 reference and duplicate because i want to get my own hand in there, figuring out angles and limbs with lines gives a little bit of movement, proportions being a little off shows what the maker wishes to exaggerate or minimise, these are all enjoyable things to me, I'm not tryna make something photo realistic. so yeah, reference good, reference teach, but your own hand is very important too.
in summary I use a combination of photo/painting/screen cap reference and just my intuition from years of drawing and looking at people for the bodies, and my own drawings and a mirror for the faces. sketching it all out takes quite a bit of time, and I often won't realise until near "the end" (after spending hours colouring caus idk the proper digital ways to do it) that I'm not happy with a thing or two. sometimes I try to "fix" this, sometimes I say "fuck it, it's an excercise and is what it is". people who have commissioned work from me might have had this happen where I've said I'm sending the drawing over and then been like actually can u wait a while I need to tweak some things and spend an hour doing so, caus part of my process is sending the image from my laptop to my phone, and not only is the colour different from my phone to my laptop, but once again it's like seeing it with a new set of eyes and pretty much always reveals a bunch of "mistakes" I've made. the phone thing also goes back to what I said earlier and what you brought up, of that intuition to look at an image both zoomed out in it's full composition, but also pushes our intuition to tap and zoom in (I'm sure there's essays on this shit about viewing art digitally and specifically on phones vs irl) this can be used to your advantage! maybe you have a style that suggests detail but when zoomed in it's very satisfying certain wide strokes of colour, or yeah you can pack in tiny details made with a finer point that you can't see zoomed out. one of the things that sucks about the style I do for my fanart is it's way more obvious when something is wrong. when it's stylised to you it's never gonna be wrong, yknow? uh. anyway. I hope this sorta answers your question. I'm happy to talk about making all day long, I always think what's best is to find what works for you. for me being inspired by things outside of the space youre making things for is really important, and plays part in us all not making similar end results. keep putting your own hand and brain to it and have fun.

You continue to chat until the other few members who had come to the store with him for some snacks come to find him. They introduce themselves & end up actually being very kind (duh) & you exchange numbers with HongJoong before parting ways.
-for weeks on end you two text anytime he can & he constantly apologizes for the lack of a set schedule, you continuously reminding & assuring you understood why. They were on tour after all.
-time zones, jet lag, production, composition, all still ran his day but, he now added in “communicate with Y/N” or “check in with Y/N” to his list.
-throughout the first 2-3 months you would FaceTime and get to know each other more until you tell him about a trip to Seoul you & your bestfriend had planned. you swear you saw his face light up more than you ever had & he asked for all the info.
-safe to say he is the type to set up a car to pick you & your best friend up & take you both around Seoul safely & securely so he can also join with some members for dinners, lunches or late night outings when they can.
-the 2 week trip was the highlight of your guys’ relationship. it was when he asked to be closer to you, to have an official standing & title of Couple with you. (he asked you to be his girlfriend okay? he’s just a lil passionate & did it in a very poetic way because—Scorpio)
-those 2 weeks after 3 months of FaceTimes, Phone Calls, Texting & Voice Messages were where it truly began for the two of you, you were pursuing your own music career, your best friend an upcoming actress & he already being the Idol he was, made it all so much easier to understand your crazy schedules.
-it’s adventurous, passionate & terrifying all together but, 6 months after that meeting in the store, you move to Seoul, making it easier to be around him.
-You soon sky rocket into the music world/industry with your EP/Debut & he couldn’t be prouder. You were set to perform at Music Bank & he was definitely fighting to be there. He was, ATEEZ was & they all cheered you on with all their might.
-you hard launched that day, a picture with OT8 captioned “my 7 best friends & the love of my life as my biggest supporters (ATINY & Y/F/N) you guys better fight harder for me!”
-ATINY went crazy because they had speculated as well as your fans (Y/F/N) had. The Dispatch pictures/articles & Western articles openly talking about the two of you & how close you’d gotten, etc. This only confirmed it.
-dating an Idol as a Western Artist was a bit hard but, you made it work, soon that random meeting of two fans of each other’s work, became a connection, then a relationship & now 2 years later, you’re both on tour, making sure your scheduled shows line up in the same cities whenever they can just to keep each other close.
-per his words HongJoong has assured you “no matter how far apart we are, what time zone we’re both in, if it’s different continents we’re on, you’re always on my mind & in my heart. come on Y/N, we broke many stereotypes already, we were meant to find each other, we got this.” his hands in your hair while you’re both tangled in either his or your hotel room on the one of few cities you both were performing in at the same time.
-even with the hardships, you fought for one another, surprise trips (planned with each other’s companies/managers), big yet intimate dinners alone, dinners with your mutual friends, other members, staff, etc. anything to spend time together & with your guys’ people/friends was what made it so easy.
-you two bounce off the other’s energy. you being a producer as well, made it easy for him to feel understood & seen in his deepest & most intimate moments. he opened up a lot to you, like you did with him.
-this was only the beginning though, he had a lot planned for your lives together. a power couple if you will, is what he saw you as & you did too.

i’ve been thinking about the meaning of that detail that seemed a bit odd to me
like why is this chicken here? and why is mo stepping on it so clearly? and mostly on the chicken’s d!ck?
first of, i think we can all agree to the fact that this chicken symbolises he tian (chicken d!ck being his nickname given by mo)
now why is mo stepping on he tian?? We can start by noticing that this event takes place after the reunion and the christmas proposal

so is it overinterpreting to say that mo stepping on that goofy a$$ chicken is a sign of ownership towards he tian? since the “stepping on something” symbolism is pretty much attached to a conquest meaning
and we know that mo accepted the proposal since he’s literally wearing that ring he tian gave him (this being mutual means that they both have influence over each other)
also, they are doing shopping
with who’s money do you ask?? pretty clear to me as well — he tian’s of course (poor mo can’t even afford a liveable studio)
he tian being devoted to mo like that also makes it that mo has power over him

aaand well i still don’t know why that chicken is here but i’d say that it only has a “narrative” purpose? idk if that’s really the word i’m looking for but you get the idea
lastly in terms of composition, mo and that chicken are clearly centred while he tian is squeezed on the right of the picture, proving that mo is the main “topic” here (the chicken may also symbolise he tian’s feelings now that i think of it)
or it could just be a chicken hanging over here i guess
anyway that was pretty messy but i just wanted to clear my thoughts and share it with you guys since i didn’t see any analysis about that? or have i just missed them?

Trigun Manga Reaction
Now unto Volume 1 - Chapter 5-6. Doubling it today! I'll start cutting posts like this with "Keep Reading" so it won't be so long.

Let me just appreciate this hilarious drawing of Vash. He's so mad at how good Meryl and Milly are at their jobs that he looks constipated. ROFL.

This conversation is different from '98. Instead of foreshadowing something about Vash, the ominous line points more towards the Bad Lads Gang's arrival.

Sigh. Another one into the album of Pretzel Vash. Why must Vash be so extra? Why must Nightow always draw him extra. LOOK AT THOSE LEGS!!! Not to mention his crotch in full display.

There he is! Brilliant Dynamites Neon. IMHO, this double page spread it much more impressive and intimidating in the manga. The build up in '98 was good but I think the neon colors from the lights took away the impact of a reveal like this. The simple contrasts of the black, white, and gray looks better.

I was about to say I like the aesthetic of this scene in '98, then these panels happened. Holy shit! I take it back! This is so much better! Felt like a jump scare while reading.

Then we suddenly have a goofy Vash! The whiplash in the manga is adapted well to '98. Tristamp is firmly on the dark angst train tho.

A very interesting composition here.
Instead of Brilliant Dynamites being drawn in full detail, only his head, fingers, and collar well. The speed lines expresses the motion of the ship really well WHILE SHOWING AT THE SAME TIME, how Brilliant Dynamites rose from the dark shadows and captured the ship at the palm of his hand. Nice.
Now, on to the next chapter!

It's a really tiny bit from this panel, but the manga Insurance Ladies always seems to "be ready for action" while their '98 counterparts are more of "think before leaping" with their characterizations.

This is just as awful as it was in '98. Ok... maybe not. The anime draws this out a lot more - the advantage of the medium in amping up the horror.

Gotta say. '98 was extremely faithful with these panels. No re-arrangement of the sequence or change of lines whatsoever. These panels were just that good especially the next one.
