In a scenario that throws the current state of warfare between the two nations into sharp relief, Israel and Iran had fostered close ties since the Jewish state’s founding in 1948. But a March 1978 visit to the Persian Gulf island of Kish – then a hedonistic playground for Iran’s rich and well-connected – along with the Israeli ambassador, Uri Lubrani, convinced Merhav that the shah’s reign was crumbling and the precious strategic partnership imperiled. With discontent rumbling and opposition protests gathering pace, the two men encountered a monarch and intelligence agents complacent and detached from the gathering storm. The pair communicated their forebodings to their Mossad and foreign ministry bosses in Israel – only to be met by skepticism and disbelief, a feeling shared by the CIA in Washington when the same warnings were relayed to it.

Weeks later, as Merhav prepared to leave Tehran at the end of his tour of duty, he had some cautionary words for his successor. “I’m worried that this friend of ours will soon be an enemy,” Merhav told him as described by Ronen Bergman in his 2008 book, The Secret War With Iran. “I’m giving you Iran with a time fuse.” It was an eerily prescient forecast. Within months, Iran was consumed with revolutionary fervor. Chaos and upheaval unfolded on the streets. As his power base quickly collapsed, the shah – so recently thought by western allies to be unassailable – fled abroad with his family in January 1979. Weeks later, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a radical Shia cleric, returned from Paris after years in exile, to take power and turn Iran into an Islamic state. He immediately severed all ties with Israel. With revolutionaries storming the Israeli embassy, the country’s remaining diplomats were forced to flee, lucky to escape Iran with their lives.

Thus began a deadly ideological enmity between two countries that had been allies, shared no common border and harbored no territorial claims against each other – and which has now spiralled into open war and, last night, dragged in the United States with consequences that may transform the geopolitical map, after Donald Trump announced that the US had bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. With the US’s entry into the conflict on Israel’s side, Merhav’s gloomy forecast has now acquired graver dimensions than perhaps even he foresaw.

The following year, Iran’s biggest-selling newspaper, Hamshahri, staged the results of a cartoon contest to lampoon history’s worst genocide at Tehran’s Palestine Contemporary Art Museum. The most egregious instance of Israel-baiting came in December 2006, when the Iranian foreign ministry staged what it called a “scientific” conference purporting to prove that the murder of 6 million Jews had not happened. The event drew a rogue’s gallery of holocaust deniers and antisemites, among them David Duke, a former imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and future supporter of Donald Trump, who praised Iran for allowing “free speech” and denounced Israel as “a terrorist state”.

It was, on many levels, a sickening spectacle, both for its unsavoury catalogue of attenders and the brazen assault on truth, with some exhibits purporting to show that allied forces, rather than the Nazis, were responsible for wartime atrocities. “The biggest turning point was Ahmadinejad being elected and then denying the Holocaust,’ said Meir Javedanfar, an Iranian-born Israeli scholar, who teaches Iran studies at Reichman University, near Tel Aviv. “Iranians lose their mind if somebody calls the Persian Gulf the Arabian Gulf. Yet they fail to understand what kind of emotions it creates in Israelis when somebody says the Holocaust is a myth.” The insult was compounded by growing Israeli suspicions that Iran was trying to build an atomic bomb.

The existence of a hitherto secret Iranian nuclear project, in the form of a uranium-enrichment facility at Natanz, had been disclosed by the opposition Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) movement in 2002. Enrichment activities were subsequently suspended by the then reformist president, Mohammad Khatami, as a confidence-building measure as western powers exerted pressure. Ahmadinejad ordered the program’s resumption, stridently asserting Iran’s nuclear “rights” and sending international tensions soaring while elevating Israeli fears to fever pitch. “You have somebody who denies the Holocaust, they’re developing nuclear program, they’re supporting Hezbollah – Iran took on a new form in terms of threats,” said Javedanfar. Israel’s preoccupation with Iran’s nuclear activities underscored how dramatically the relationship between the two one-time allies had been transformed by the fall of the shah, historians say.

Reporters were left stunned by the way the International Boxing Association handled a press conference about two Olympic boxers at the center of controversy.

The IBA on Tuesday held the presser to detail its decision to disqualify Algeria’s Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting from previous competitions. Both are competing in the Olympics, and their respective wins in the quarterfinals mean they are both guaranteed to win medals in Paris.

According to the IBA, the disqualifications came from test results that the organization believes prove they are men. Both competitors, however, have insisted they were born female and have identified as women their entire lives. Their passports also indicate that they’re female.

Both athletes, the IBA said, have XY chromosomes. Khelif was born with disorders of sex development (DSD), which can result in XY chromosomes and higher levels of testosterone. At birth, Khelif was observed to have external female genitalia and was assigned female.

Reporters in attendance described the conference as a “car crash” and the “most extraordinary news conference I’ve ever witnessed.”

Much of the presser’s backlash involved IBA chief Umar Kremlev. In addition to accusing the head of the International Olympic Committee of being a “sodomite,” Kremlev claimed that female boxing was being “soiled” as a result of the IOC’s decision to let the fighters compete with women at the Olympics.

Kremlev said that Khelif’s and Yu-Ting’s tests were both done at independent labs. The results, he continued, indicated they were male. A Daily Mail reporter asked if there was an independent witness during testing, and Kremlev admitted there was not. Additionally, he said they didn’t “verify what they have between their legs,” stating they didn’t know if it was the genitalia they were born with or “if some changes were made.”

Daily Mail described the conference as “shambolic” and noted several “lengthy” rants from Kremlev. His interpreter even struggled to keep up with the rants and many in attendance couldn’t even understand him.

As a result, Reuters cut its stream of the conference. BBC simply walked out.

There were also multiple protestors who showed up in support of the boxers. At one point, the IBA lost the room and most of the press turned around to talk to the protestors instead.

COP30 and the challenge of a discordant world

Confronted by domestic division and global conflict, the Brazilian hosts of the Belém climate summit have adopted an extremely cautious stance that falls far short of what is needed to address the climate emergency

The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, the Belém COP, suffers from a fundamental problem: global governance is  ceasing to function.

International negotiations have never been entirely coherent or beautiful, but they have always been the best bet for a consensus among the UN’s 200 member countries on solutions to common problems, including the threat posed by climate change to life on the planet. Today, though, in a world has been allowing Palestinian civilians to be massacred by Israel since 2023, televised in real time, there is far less prospect for an agreement to help  those who lost their homes to flooding in Rio Grande do Sul or their means of survival to droughts in the Amazon.

Donald Trump is only part of the reason for the breakdown. The US president withdrew from the Paris Agreement against climate change once before, in 2017, at the start of his first term. At the time, the impact of this withdrawal was circumvented by a positive international environment. What Trump is trying to do now, after taking over the White House for the second time, is to drive the last nail into the coffin of multilateralism, by explicitly stating the United States’ intention to act alone. Using a more aggressive program than during his last administration, Trump has heightened disputes that already existed with both friends and foes of the US and has catalyzed denialist tendencies in economic sectors and countries that are backing down on their commitments to stop global heating.

It is not by chance that this is happening at the moment of truth, when implementation of the climate agreements calls for those who emit the most greenhouse gas to compromise more and contribute more. It is what the social movements broadly refer to as “climate justice” and the climate negotiations call a “fair transition” – the topic of a work group created under the Paris Agreement that was unable to approve any documents at the 2024 COP, in Baku, Azerbaijan. The resistance to compromise – and to overcoming what Brazil’s environment minister, Marina Silva, called “unsustainable development models” at COP29 – is reflected in the geopolitical tug-of-war as well as domestically in Brazil, the host country of the conference that will mark ten years since the Paris Agreement.

President Lula may have anticipated this situation when, even before his inauguration, he threw Brazil’s hat in the ring to host the COP30 in the Amazon Rainforest, a biome central to life’s survival. In Brasilia, there is anxiety about the potential repercussions of this event on domestic politics and some limit their ambitions to avoiding responsibility for conference failures. It is in this context that the cautious positions put forth by the Brazilians running the COP30 should be interpreted, both in the letter released on March 10 and in interviews published recently by SUMAÚMA.

SAINT OF THE DAY (March 10)

March 10 is the liturgical memorial of Saint John Ogilvie, a 16th and 17th-century Scotsman who converted from Protestantism to Catholicism, served as a Jesuit priest, and died as a martyr at the hands of state officials.

St. John was executed for treason, refusing to accept King James I’s claim of supremacy over the Church.

A Catholic priest, he is the only post-Reformation Scottish saint.

In February 2010, during a visit to Rome by the Scottish bishops’ conference, Benedict XVI asked the bishops to promote devotion to St. John Ogilvie among priests – since the Jesuit martyr had been “truly outstanding in his dedication to a difficult and dangerous pastoral ministry, to the point of laying down his life.”

Later that year, during the Scottish segment of his U.K. visit, the Pope again encouraged priests to look to the saint’s “dedicated, selfless and brave example."

John Ogilvie was born in 1579, a member of a noble family. Some of his relatives had kept the Catholic faith, while others adhered to John Calvin’s interpretation of Protestantism as Presbyterians.

Though raised as a Calvinist, John had doubts about the compatibility of this system with Scripture.

In particular, he could not reconcile Calvin’s theology of predestination with Biblical passages teaching that God loves all people and wills each of them to be saved.

This difficulty, coupled with the contrast between Catholic unity and the multiple Protestant sects and denominations, influenced John’s decision to enter the Catholic Church.

He made the decision at age 17 while studying in Belgium, and in 1599, he became a novice in the Society of Jesus.

After extensive study and training, he was ordained a Jesuit priest in Paris during 1610.

John greatly desired to go back to his native country and encourage its return to the Catholic Church.

He served for a time as a priest in France, while requesting to be sent back to Scotland.

Others within his order made it clear to him that such a mission would be dangerous and unlikely to produce much fruit.

In 1613, however, John obtained the assignment he desired.

He soon discovered the truth of the warnings he had received from other Jesuits about the difficulty of Catholic evangelization in Scotland.

Many members of the upper classes were not interested in returning to the Church, though he did carry out pastoral work among a largely poor population of Scots who had kept the faith.

After a period in England, he returned to France, seeking directions on how to proceed in light of his lack of success.

The French Jesuits ordered John back to Scotland, however, where he resumed his ministry to the underground Church as well as the smaller number of people interested in converting.

His arrest came about when one potential “convert” turned out to be an informer, who had John arrested and interrogated.

The first criminal accusation St. John Ogilvie faced was that of celebrating Mass within the King’s realm.

Unwilling to incriminate himself, he suffered two months of imprisonment. An iron bar was attached to his feet to prevent him from moving in his cell.

Despite this ordeal, he strongly resisted pressure to give evidence against other Scottish Catholics.

Severe torture was then inflicted on John. His hair and fingernails were pulled out, and for a period of nine days, he was prevented from sleeping by continual stabbing with sharp stakes.

His jailers beat him, flung him to the floor of his cell, and shouted in his ears. Nothing, however, could make him renounce his faith or betray his Catholic countrymen to the authorities.

John’s tormentors were impressed by his fortitude and by the surprising sense of humor that he showed in the face of the brutal punishments.

But they could not spare his life, unless the Jesuit priest gave an acceptable response to a series of questions provided by King James I.

John declared his loyalty to the king but steadfastly rejected James’ claim to supremacy over the Church in religious matters.

The priest was eventually convicted on a charge of high treason.

Attempts to ply John with bribery – in exchange for his return to Protestantism and his betrayal of fellow Catholics – continued even as he was being led to his execution.

His own defiant words are recorded:

"For the Catholic faith, he said, he would willingly and joyfully pour forth even a hundred lives.

Snatch away that one which I have from me and make no delay about it, but my religion you will never snatch away from me!"

Asked whether he was afraid to die, the priest replied: “I fear death as much as you do your dinner.”

As a last gesture before his hanging, John had tossed his Rosary beads into the crowd where they were caught by a Calvinist nobleman.

The man, Baron John ab Eckersdorff, later became a Catholic, tracing his conversion to the incident and the martyr’s beads.

John Ogilvie was executed by hanging on 10 March 1615.

He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 22 December 1929 and was canonized by Pope Paul VI on 17 October 1976.

Most delegations, however, interpreted it as a World's Fair with a prize for the One Correct Religion. The Symposium attracted relatively young men from each faith, many of whom told reporters that their faith was a religion of universal insight, the best explanation for all recent lab results, & appropriate for all cultures. The Contest of Religions was largely a phenomenon of the popular imagination, however, as these sentiments produced equal or greater backlashes in the conservative populations of each faith.

Nevertheless, the 1950s saw an immense surge of public interest in the supernatural, which the US press called the Magic Economic Boom & the Magic Research Boom. In both sectors, much of these new projects were delusional, chasing rumored phenomena that never actually existed. But history well remembers the successes of this era, such as the Saldana family's psychic search & rescue enterprise. While much of the public still doubted the reality of psychic abilities & miracles, they could no longer doubt the ability of these concepts to make money.

By the 1960s, most American universities were divided not between art & science but between magic & tradition. While the supernatural sector sometimes drew millions from investors, most graduates found their much-mocked 'degree in Miracle Studies' of little use for finding a job. It was the Esoteric Science movement in Boston that first successfully integrated these new fields into academia. As anti-mystical as the traditionalists, yet convinced in the reality of supernatural phenomena, Esoteric Science studied the concepts of religion & superstition with open-minded rigor.
