'Total Immersion Racing'
[PC / PS2 / XBOX] [UK] [MAGAZINE] [2002]
""The finger", or the middle finger (as in giving someone the (middle) finger, flipping the bird or flipping someone off) is an obscene hand gesture. The gesture communicates moderate to extreme contempt, and is roughly equivalent in meaning to "fuck you", "fuck off", "go fuck yourself", "shove it up your ass/arse" or "up yours". It is performed by showing the back of a hand that has only the middle finger extended upwards, though in some locales, the thumb is extended. Extending the finger is considered a symbol of contempt in several cultures, especially in the Western world. Many cultures use similar gestures to display their disrespect, although others use it to express pointing without intentional disrespect. The gesture is usually used to express contempt but can also be used humorously or playfully. The gesture dates back to ancient Greece and it was also used in ancient Rome. Historically, it represented a phallus. In the early 1800s, it gained increasing recognition as a sign of disrespect and was used by music artists (notably more common among actors, celebrities, athletes and politicians; most still view the gesture as obscene). In more contemporary periods, the bent index and ring fingers on each side of the middle finger have been likened to represent the testes." ~Wikipedia

'Race 07: Official WTCC Game'
[PC] [ITALY] [MAGAZINE] [2007]
"All in all, Race 07 is well beyond just another competent racing game. It’s absolutely one of the pinnacle examples of simulation racing, but that alone means it’s not for everyone. While gearheads will have a ton of fun with this title, the Need for Speed set isn’t going to feel at home here. If you’re after some serious hardcore racing sim action and you love either the tracks or the cars offered here, you absolutely can’t go wrong. Alternately, if you’re just looking for something to help you keep the dust off of that Logitech G25 wheel, this would also be a great choice. Now if you’ll excuse me, someone has an errand I need to run for them. (Any excuse to get back behind the wheel, right?)" ~Sam Sollars, Game Almighty

¡Qué pasa, Neng!: el videojuego
[PS2] [SPAIN] [MAGAZINE] [2007]
"Neng de Castefa is possibly Edu Soto's best-known character. He played a young, loud, hyperactive man from the neighborhood, obsessed with his car (which he called a "buga") and with becoming a DJ . This character was a parody of the urban tribe of maquineros (machinists) from the Barcelona town of Castelldefels (not the later "cani" urban culture, as popular belief has it), related to Spain's Bakalao culture. This character was synonymous with his catchphrase, "qué pasa, neng! " The name neng comes from the Catalan word nen, meaning "boy" or "kid," and colloquially takes on a meaning similar to "uncle ," while the addition of the letter "-g" gives it a sound similar to that used in Catalonia by those the character was parodying. In addition, El Neng was notable for his wardrobe, which consisted of a green T-shirt with yellow sleeves decorated with the Chinese character 能 on the back (pronounced the same way in pinyin as neng ), blue sweatpants, and sneakers. He also sported a crew cut with tapered sideburns and a pair of cheap sunglasses that were perpetually perched on his forehead. Neng's popularity was such that he had his own video game for PlayStation 2. Even a music CD (double CD+DVD) was released in 2005 with the motif of his character in Buenafuente called: Qué Pasa, Neng!" ~es.wikipedia, based on machine translation

'Capitalism Plus'
[DOS / PC] [UK] [MAGAZINE] [1997]
"J. K. Galbraith, in his classic study of the 1929 Wall Street crash, wrote: 'In the United States, the suicide wave that followed the stock market crash is also part of the legend of 1929. In fact, there were none. For several years before 1929, the suicide rate had been gradually rising. It continued to increase in that year, with a further and much sharper increase in 1930, 1931, and 1932 … The statistics for New Yorkers, who might be assumed to have had a special propensity for self-destruction derived from their special propinquity to the market, show only a slight deviation from those of the country as a whole.' Indeed, the suicide rate in the US was higher in the summer months before the crash when the stock market was prospering. One cause of the myth is that there were some suicides related to the crash, including jumping from windows. For example, two men jumped out of a window in the Ritz. Allegedly, clerks in downtown hotels started asking guests whether they wanted a room for sleeping or jumping. However, few people jumped from windows: jumping from a bridge, dousing oneself in gasoline and lighting, gassing and shooting were all used. The press, though, did not let reality stop them from running lurid stories about huge numbers of suicides." ~Mark Pack, The Guardian

'Mercurius Pretty'
[PC] [SOUTH KOREA] [MAGAZINE] [1996]
"Creature-raising simulators involve experimenting with inputs to transform something useless into the ideal form. That's pretty much what alchemy was all about in the past, but with minerals, right? Mercurius Pretty takes this idea to its conclusion. In this game, players are tasked with nurturing a homunculus-an artificial creature born from mystical practices. Initially released for the PC-98, this Windows port on CD-ROM brought the game to a broader audience with several enhancements, including a voiced introduction, three additional endings, and a shortened (less repetitive) game duration from three months to two. At its core, Mercurius Pretty for Windows revolves around raising a homunculus girl over 65 days. Your primary objective is to guide her growth through education and training, ensuring she evolves into her fullest potential. At the end of this period, the game culminates in one of over 30 possible endings, each reflecting your path for her development." ~ @tangobunny , TangoPunk (Enigmatic Gaming Glossary, #02)

'EMI Music Resources - "Ozzy Osbourne"'
[MISC] [USA] [MAGAZINE] [2003]
"Though Osbourne is most known for his massive music career, the artist influenced tons of other media as well. (...)In gaming, Osbourne was a rocker in Guitar Hero World Tour, the Guardian of Metal in Brutal Legend, and a wrestler in WWE Champions. The Prince of Darkness also appeared in a hilarious commercial for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King – even performing at BlizzCon in 2009 to celebrate the expansion – and another ad for Horizon Call of the Mountain more recently. Beyond that, his music has appeared in countless video games, including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." ~Eric Law, GameRant ("Ozzy Osbourne Has Died at Age 76")

'Chess Mates'
[DOS / MAC / PC] [USA] [MAGAZINE] [1996]
"There are 64 squares on the board, but Wigby, the brains behind Chess Mates from BrainStorm, isn't one of them. This wise-cracking wizard gives fledgling chess nerds clear explanations of how to set up the board and move the pieces, and although the wiz makes one surprising gaffe in terminology-mixing up rank and file-he gets it right in subsequent references. Wigby's always got a hint for unsure players, and even rank beginners have a chance to triumph on lower levels. Older or more experienced players may find Chess Mates insufficiently challenging, however, and Wigby takes forever to move at higher levels. But for a real ego booster at any age-you can't beat the look of surprise on the opposing king's face as the blaring trumpets announce checkmate." ~Katherine L. Ulrich, Macworld (January 1997)

'Battle Chess'
[AMI / APP2 / DOS / TANDY] [USA] [MAGAZINE] [1988]
"Battle Chess must rank as the most entertaining chess game around, and the funniest. The style with which the chess pieces fight is comic-book and is a healthy mixture of humour styles (watch out for the Monty Python And The Holy Grail take-off when two knights fight). As well as being an aural and visual treat, Battle Chess is also a fine chess game." ~The Games Machine (November 1988, #12)

'ClayFighter 2: Judgement Clay'
[SNES] [UK] [MAGAZINE] [1994]
"I was once a huge ClayFighter advocate, having seen some early, quixotic screenshots of the original in magazines like EGM. Unfortunately, my evangelization proved too effective, resulting in my more privileged friend getting the game first. Naturally, he invited me over, and we learned the terrible truth: ClayFighter, at best, is a saccharine distraction, lacking the meat and longevity of a Street Fighter II. And yet.. the game at least has heart, which is more than I can say for its half-baked sequel." ~Daniel Anderson, Ultimate Nintendo: Guide to the SNES Library (1991-1998)

'Primal Rage'
[ARC] [UK] [MAGAZINE] [1994]
"The competitive nature included in most games is a major factor of fun. Two or more players involved in a fight for survival to become first, the winner. The way that the various players interact has not greatly changed over the years, but the inclusion of network capability allowing up to 16 machines to be connected has heightened interactivity. The more hard-hitting the competiton, the more popular the game seems to be. New products like Atari's Primal Rage highlight the more graphical depiction of a two player beat-'em-up. This game includes special roto-scoping techniques imagery in the representation of monster fighting, with buckets of blood." ~EuroSlot, October 1994 ("Has Violence Gone To Far?")

'Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis'
[PC / PS2 / XBOX] [USA] [MAGAZINE, SPREAD] [2003]
"You have been chosen by the eccentric billionaire and CEO of InGen John Hammond as the newest manager of Jurassic Park, a theme park featuring dinosaurs as its main attraction! InGen has provided you with a series of small islands to build up your park from, and has given you access to some of the richest fossil sites in the world! Make the park a safe and affordable holiday destination for the entire family! InGen is counting on you. Gameplay in Operation Genesis involves building and maintaining your own Jurassic Park, with the ultimate goal being to reach a five-star Park. Dinosaurs are enclosed in three tiers of electric fences, from low security to high security. Dinosaurs are born in hatcheries, and need lakes and food dispensers (which can either hold bales of hay or live cows and goats, depending on the species) to thrive. Players must also care for visitors and park - food kiosks, rest rooms and rest areas make happy guests, as does a clean park. Security is very important for Jurassic Park. Players must build Ranger Stations, security bunkers, avoidance beacons, and security cameras in order to keep visitors relaxed and happy. In order to unlock more dinosaurs, dig teams are dispatched to fossil dig sites to recover Dino DNA, which is then extracted. Once 50% of any one dinosaur's DNA has be discovered, players will be able to breed one." ~Jurassic Park Wiki

'Princess Maker'
[PC-FX] [JAPAN] [MAGAZINE] [1994]
"Visually stunning, this life simulation is very close to perfection (having been released in 1995 on Super CD-ROM²) with its rendering mix of anime/manga features that literally comes to life before our eyes. Where this Gainax title is astonishing on a technical level, it also acquires a depth that does not necessarily show a design resolutely turned towards fantasy and castle life. The player brings up an orphan, and will have a lot to do to shape their life through choices that will make them a strong, a superficial youngster, or a member of royalty. To do this, a set of statistics are combined with a ministerial schedule, between studies, daily life, and fights, all accompanied by a pleasing soundtrack." ~The PC Engine / Turbografx-16 & PC-FX Anthology
