The Icthus Directive

(part 1)

16:04:22 Galaxy Standard Time

Agent Kelton entered the numbers into the menu as precisely as his exosuit gloves would let him. 72% baroque orchestra. 28% smooth jazz.

He tapped a final button, flicked off the suit’s forearm screen, and grinned as the first notes sounded gently in his earpiece. Everyone had their own blends of automusic these days, but he was proud of this one. He’d spent weeks adjusting the percentages until the jazz notes wavered just between the melody and the continuo, supporting but not overwhelming the whole.

He started the rover again. Music should help the drive go faster. The planet Nereus was known for its constant pale-green twilight, bare, jutting landscape…and not much else. Working in census compliance didn’t really set you up for trips to the luxury biosphere planets.

Just one more isolated mining settlement to go.

Kelton jerked the rover to the left as its fat rubber tires nearly collided with yet another spiky rock jutting from the canyon floor.

He could see the end of the canyon ahead, where one wall sank back into a dusty twilit plain. It couldn’t come soon enough. He’d been awake almost a full standard day, and he’d spent the last hour weaving through the canyon, straining to see ahead. The rover’s headlights were bright enough, but they turned the rocks nearest him into knife-sharp, mile-long shadows that obscured everything in their path.

He flexed one hand, sore from clenching the wheel. Right, right again, left—around a rock that towered taller than a D-class ship. He was nearly there.

And that’s when the tire popped.

Kelton knew by instinct what the sharp jerk was even as it flung him forward. He clung to the wheel as the rover careened to the right, wrenching it into a clear spot. He slammed on the brakes and slid to an unsteady halt. The rover rocked forward, then sideways, as any remaining air left the shredded tire in a rush.

Dust clouded and swirled in the headlights. Theorbo and bass guitar twanged together in his ear.

He took a long breath, switched off the automusic, and cursed. Very loudly.

Survival wasn’t the issue. The rover carried emergency oxygen and food, even a foldable shelter in case of something like this. This wasn’t the first time he’d broken down while on a job.

But the closest company craft was on the literal other side of the planet, over in Luton. Devor had taken it to do the big, spread-out mining centers there, leaving him with the rover for the little ones. He’d told her it wouldn’t be a problem.

Knowing her, she’d decide it was most efficient to finish up her compliance visits before coming to his rescue—and she’d expect him to get his last one finished anyway.

Flicking on his forearm screen, he typed a quick message and activated his location beacon.

I’ve broken down a few miles out from Settlement A412. Rover is currently inoperable and will need to be transported for maintenance. I’ll plan to meet you at A412 at your earliest convenience.

Scowling, he pressed “send.”

Then he swung down from the rover. Boots crunching in the dusty gravel, he walked around to the back and unhooked the survival essentials pack. With a grunt, he swung it unto his shoulders and fastened the straps.

He’d rather get to A412 tonight. The shelter wasn’t comfortable.

Cursing again, Kelton switched off the rover, sending his surroundings into stark blackness. Quickly, he turned on his exosuit’s own headlight. Then he marked his current coordinates, set up the routing system, and started walking.

He didn’t have Settlement A412’s exact coordinates—that was the other problem. Its census agreements hadn’t been updated in over ten years. An embarrassment to the Milky Way Authority, on all counts—one he would soon correct. But first, he had to get to the general area, keeping his eyes open for the domed shelters that would be burrowed into the rocks beside the yawning mining shafts. And he was tired.

He hadn’t walked for more than a few minutes when he saw a figure ahead—silhouetted in the pale light just beyond the canyon’s end. It seemed to be walking slowly in his direction. He tensed a little, gloved fingers twitching towards the stun rod clipped to his thigh, then dropping again. A lone traveler, on foot, was unusual. But Nereus wasn’t known for violence or gang activity.

The figure continued its slow progress toward him. As they drew even with another and his headlight flashed over it, he saw that it was an android.

An old DG-30 unit. Emphasis on old—a long crack ran down one of its legs, and the eye-sensors were separate, mounted on top of the head. Probably a pre-biometric scanning model. No visible weapons.

It had to be from Settlement A412. But why was it ranging miles away?

Kelton took a step closer. “Directive?” he asked it.

“Directive,” said a cool, carefully accented voice. “Feed the hungry. Give drink to the thirsty. Clothe the naked. Shelter the homeless. Visit the sick. Bury the dead.”

The directive was non-standard. Not mining protocol, that was for sure. The unit paused, as if waiting.

Then suddenly it bent at the waist, reached out a rust-spotted finger, and traced a shape into the fine gray dust. Two curving lines, like segments of a circle, meeting at one point and crossing at another.

He had hoped that the DG-30 would show him the way. But the scratched shape didn’t look like a map.

Kelton leaned forward and sent a visual search query for the symbol. But the results pane at the bottom of his vision came back empty.

The unit’s two greenish eye-sensors were tilted toward him. “I don’t understand,” he told it.

It paused again, as if recalibrating, then asked a new question.

“What is your need?” The metallic voice had a touch of sympathy.

“Nothing,” Kelton began; then, remembering its odd directive in a sudden flash of genius—“I mean, I’m homeless.”

“Homeless,” repeated the android. “No place of residence?”

“None,” he answered, hoping it somehow wouldn’t scan his identity chip.

It paused again. Then it nodded.

“Follow me,” it said, and it turned and began walking.

That worked?

Kelton followed. They crunched along in silence, out of the dark canyon, and struck out across the plain. For the first time in hours, he felt like laughing. The whole interaction had been so strange—just a few words, and now the unit was taking him where he needed to go. And the shape it had drawn? He’d have to ask about it at the mining settlement.

Odd that the visual search hadn’t found anything.

OnePlus 7 Pro 12GB RAM smartphone runs on Android v9.0 (Pie) operating system. Design 

As delicate as it looks, OnePlus 7 Pro is indeed a heavy smartphone once you pick it up. We did find it heavier than Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphones. That may primarily be because of the larger battery, use of denser metal construction and even a separate retractable camera module. Nonetheless, the device feels balanced and it indeed is easy to use. It’s definitely sleeker than before and taller as well with 6.7-inch screen size. The ‘premium’ feel comes largely because of the all-glass front with curved sides and zero distractions in the form of notches or punch holes.

Display 

If there’s one thing that OnePlus has proclaimed is a massive improvement over the last year’s flagship OnePlus 6, it’s the near bezel-less screen. And by saying near bezel-less we mean seriously thinner bezels than what’s present in Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, something which by default makes the 7 Pro’s screen impressively immersive. The company has already adopted OLED screens with older smartphones and the 7 Pro just creates a new benchmark with a QHD+ Fluid AMOLED display that has HDR support, all clubbed with 90Hz refresh rate. Yes, we have seen 90Hz AMOLED screen in the past with Asus ROG Phone but this one has an elegance of its own with near-zero top and bottom bezels with curved sides, making the viewing experience nothing less than ‘eye-popping’.

Performance 

Over the years OnePlus has made such an impression of its smartphones that one is bound to expect the top of the line processors. Keeping the tradition, OnePlus 7 Pro harnesses the power from Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. This also makes the device first in the country with this processor. Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphones also come with the same processor but not in India. The processor is clubbed with Adreno 640 and up to 12GB RAM, the variants which we received. You can also get it in 6GB and 8GB RAM variants, which should be equally powerful. Needless to say, playing games, working on multiple apps, streaming videos and music, the experience iOS as smooth as it gets. The big question, however, to ask is if the smartphone really takes advantage of 12GB or even 8GB RAM capacity or just shows-off with no real use. 

Camera 

With OnePlus 7 Pro, the company has finally joined two new bandwagons - triple rear cameras and a front-facing pop-up camera. The center camera placement design is retained from the OnePlus 6 and 6T except that there’s a third lens in the mix. The camera sensors have been upgraded this time along with the specifications and the overall quality. You get a 48MP Sony IMX586 primary camera with 1.6 um pixel size, 7P lens glass, OIS, EIS, and f/1.6 aperture. This comes with an 8MP telephoto camera (3XL optical zoom) with 1um pixel size, OIS and f/2.4 aperture and a 16MP ultra-wide angle lens with f/2.2 aperture and 117-degree FoV.   

Battery

OnePlus smartphones were already a champion in the battery department and OnePlus 7 Pro just carries forward the torch. The 4000mAh battery is one of the longest-running ones (in a single charge) we’ve seen in an Android smartphone. We used the device as our primary driver, making it perform tasks like checking multiple email accounts, browsing social media for hours, playing games non-stop for 3-4 hours in a stretch, streaming audio, videos, all while keeping auto-brightness activated and the display on 90Hz refresh rate. All of this gave us an impressive 14+ hours worth of juice on an average. The screen on-time performance was consistent at 6 hours and above, which is good given the powerful specs and display features. The main counteracting element here is the screen and reducing the animation to 60Hz could give you slightly more battery life. We didn’t feel the need to play around with the refresh rate options as the overall performance was good.

Como todos los años Google ha lanzado una nueva versión de Android y en 2020 ha sido Android 11. Los distintos fabricantes realizan desarrollos paralelos de las interfaces que usan en sus móviles. En el caso de OPPO hablamos de Color OS.

En 2019 la empresa presentó Color OS 7, basada en Android 10, pero para este año ha llevado a cabo un cambio de nombre, similar al que hicieron firmas como Huawei. Así, el software que han creado basándose en Android 11 se llamará Color OS 11 y ya tenemos fechas de actualizaciones en España y otros mercados europeos.

Una de las intenciones de la empresa es hacerlo mas parecido a Android stock, pero tras haberlo visto no parece que, al menos estéticamente, vayamos a ver algo así. Eso sí, Discover volverá a los escritorios, algo que nos alegra.

Novedades en móviles OPPO con Color OS 11

Traducción con gesto de tres dedos

Una de las novedades más curiosas es la inclusión, dentro de la función de hacer una captura de pantalla con tres dedos, de poder traducir el texto seleccionado. Para ello OPPO ha integrado la funcionalidad de Google Lens.

Modo oscuro personalizable

Aunque OPPO lleva ya un tiempo con el modo oscuro disponible, en esta versión de Color OS esto va un paso más allá y tendremos tres modos oscuros personalizables: Intenso, medio y suave.

Podremos cambiar el fondo de pantalla e iconos del modo oscuro para que no sean los mismos que con el modo diurno. Podremos programarlos en función de la salida y puesta del sol o de las horas que queramos e incluso podremos el contraste de la pantalla para adaptarse a los diferentes modos de forma automática.

Ventanas flotantes redimensiobables

Color OS 11 permitirá el uso de apps en una ventana flotante, pero además podremos cambiar el tamaño de las misma para que no moleste en pantalla.

Always on Display

Por fin se implementa el sistema avanzado de pantalla Ambiente o Always On Display. Se podrá personalizar con diseños diferentes, no sólo en las animaciones, sino también en los estilos, colores…

Wallpapers

OPPO ha implementado una curiosa función capaz de generar varios wallpapers a partir de una fotografía. El sistema creará wallpapers minimalistas que podremos utilizar de forma sencilla.

Colores del sistema

Una de las funciones que más gustaban de Oxygen OS, la interfaz de OnePlus, era la posibilidad de podremos cambiar los colores del sistema. En Color OS 11 podremos hacerlo, además de modificar la fuente y la forma de los iconos de la barra de notificaciones.

Sensor de huellas e iconos

La personalización será mucho mayor en Color OS, y podremos cambiar los paquetes de iconos, las formas de los mismos y las animaciones del sensor de huellas.

Tonos

Podremos modificar los tonos del sistema eligiendo unos instrumentos u otros y eligiendo el tipo con una interfaz muy sencilla e intuitiva.

Ademas, el sistema fusionará los sonidos continuos de varias notificaciones en uno solo, algo perfecto para los chats.

Control del dispositivo

Color OS 11 será compatible con el nuevo botón de encendido de Android 11 que permite el control de dispositivos domóticos de la casa. Será usable con el asistente de Google pero también incluirá controles para otros ecosistemas.

Privacidad

Además de todas estas novedades se han implementado las novedades de privacidad de Android 11, como los permisos únicos y la restricción de la localización.

Qué funciones de Android 11 se echan en falta

Quedan algunas cosas propias de Android 11 que no se han implementado, como el control multimedia en la zona de acceso directos de la barra de notificaciones. Esperemos que llegue en una actualización posterior. Tampoco tendremos las notificaciones en forma de burbuja, al menos por el momento.

Primeros móviles que se podrán actualizar

La compañía también ha publicado las fechas en las que podemos esperar que esta actualización llegue a sus móviles en España y demás países europeos:
