Fangs of Fortune (ep.03 - ep.05)
Oh god, where do I start? Everyone has become less stabby now, but mildly insulting each other seems to be the new form of flirting (between, like, everyone?). Okay, between the Zhuo Yichen - Zhu Yan - Wen Xiao trio for sure. I'm seeing you, guys, you don't have to be so obvious about it XD
That flirtatious contract-signing procedure with Wen Xiao, and Zhu Yan calling Yichen 'better than a dog', and Wen Xiao calling demons 'pets', and then Zhu Yan offering her to become one. I mean come on XD
"Here's some free demonic energy, so you can easily kill me later." Is this romantic or what? XD The kind of demonic romance this show seems to be excelling at. Manly healing handholding - check ✔
Also, Li Lun appears out of the darkness with the broodiness of an ex who was left behind by Zhu Yan after giving birth to the Wilderness after doing some powerful wibbly wobbly timey wimey demonic magic stuff (supposedly, he was ditched for a woman, now dead, who was supposedly killed by Li Lun, now imprisoned). And now the poor guy has to compete with yet another pretty woman and an even prettier young man.
I mean, Li Lun, brother, I get it, Zhu Yan is a babe, but killing off your ex's friends and lovers won't make him like you more, that's just not how things work. And judging by the fact that Li Lun got all chained up in some cave, he probably messed up badly. Killed the previous Bai Ze Goddess? Or did something equally un-cool.
Our gorgeous Zhu Yan is a walking and talking Red Flag, although, the kind you want to wrap around yourself and never let go. I mean, how do they manage to withstand his demonic charm? I seriously have no idea)))
Hou Minghao had a serious demonic glow-up. I loved him as a dragon in Back from the Brink (where he was equal parts cute and beautiful), but this regal demonic deity he's channeling here is just wow. Where did all that come from? And once again, it's paired with a decent amount of creepy-ish cuteness (like, it's slightly weird to call a many-thousand-year-old powerful demon lord cute, but he's also not not cute, you know what I mean? XD)
And god bless all the sponsors who made all these pretty fantasy fights possible (the post-production team, I'm looking at you). Also the quality of the picture is incredibly good - everything is so movie-like, I can't even imagine the budget that went into this. But I'm glad they had it!
The vibe of the show is so, ah XD I can't even say it's queer, but it kind of is? With a possibility of multiple polycules wherever you look (or maybe it's just me and my mind playing tricks, but I'm enjoying this to the fullest).
And the way Yichen sneezes every time someone (Zhu Yan especially) is talking about him XD So cute. Bai Jiu is hilarious - screaming like the girliest girl at every prospect of danger and fainting at the sight of dead bodies. The most believable 13-year-old in the history of cdrama)))
I'm loving all the characters so far and patiently waiting for the tragedy of the death of the previous Bai Ze goddess to fully unfold (Wen Xiao's memories hint at more upcoming drama with Zhu Yan).
#fangs of fortune#fof#cdrama#cdrama review#this show keeps on delivering in all aspects#I'm squealing at all their interactions#the show somehow manages to be equal parts cute and gritty#100% immersive experience#and it's PRETTY#continuous eyegasm#zhu yan#zhuo yichen#wen xiao#li lun#zhao yuanzhou#hou minghao#neo hou

Not to sound like an old person, but I love physical media.
I spent money on a product that I get to keep forever. I don't have to continue paying money to keep this thing. I own it after only paying for it once.
With this one-time purchase, I can watch my favorite movie, with all its fight scenes and eargasm soundtrack and eyegasm animation, forever. I can watch this whenever I want, even if my internet is dead. Because it's not hosted on a streaming site. It's mine.
I love physical media.

Ayala Foundation, NHCP launch ‘Magiting Face Mask’ for Flag Day
A face mask bearing design elements inspired by the Philippine Flag became an emblem of heroism and nationalism, especially during the time of COVID-19.
Ayala Foundation, in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, officially launched on May 28 the Magiting Face Mask, which bears the colors of the Philippine flag and the eight-rayed sun.

The Magiting Face Mask, designed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and produced by Ayala Foundation
The face mask serves to honor our Filipino front-liners and essential workers who are making a huge sacrifice for the nation to contain the spread of the pandemic.
The Magiting Face Mask was one of the key features of the commemoration of the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite. All guests, including the honor guards from the Philippine Navy, wore the mask to commemorate the first unfurling of the Philippine Flag in 1898.

Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar (right) receiving a Magiting Mask from Ayala Foundation President Ruel Maranan
The mask was also simultaneously launched at the First Digital Magiting Conference organized by Ayala Foundation, the Department of Education, and the NHCP on the same day. The conference, which gathered 200 Araling Panlipunan and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao teachers from Region III, discussed teaching tools, methods, and other resources to teach history and love of country, as the education system prepares for the “new normal.” The conference was also viewed by over 1,500 participants through Facebook Live.
“We hope to distribute the Magiting Face Mask to our front-liners and essential workers, in recognition of their heroism during this time,” said Ruel Maranan, president of Ayala Foundation.
The Magiting Face Mask is part of Ayala Foundation’s Maging Magiting program, which calls on Filipinos to express their love of country by giving our national symbols, especially the Philippine flag, the respect they deserve.

Ayala Foundation President Ruel Maranan (left) ceremonially turns over the Magiting Face Mask to Retired Commodore Salvador Esguerra of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines. Looking on are Department of National Defense Undersecretary Reynaldo Mapagu and PVAO administrator Usec. Ernesto Carolina
In 2019 Ayala Foundation and its partners distributed Philippine flags to 10,000 public schools, police stations, military camps, and other government offices across all 17 regions of the country.
This year, the foundation and its partners seek to distribute the face mask to community front-liners and essential workers. The DepEd teachers who participated in the Digital Magiting Conference were among the first to receive the masks.
Ayala Foundation President Ruel Maranan also officially turned over Magiting Face Mask to the Philippine National Police, through Police Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar of the Interagency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases.
Magiting Face Masks were also delivered to veterans of the Philippine military. Receiving the masks from Maranan were Undersecretary Reynaldo Mapagu, undersecretary for Civil, Veterans, and Reservists Affairs of the Department of National Defense; Undersecretary Ernesto Carolina, administrator of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office; and Retired Commodore Salvador Esguerra, vice president for operations of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines. Also present at the turnover was NHCP executive director B. Gen. Restituto Aguilar.
At the turnover, Usec. Mapagu thanked Ayala Foundation for the face masks, which, he said, will help “protect our most important national resource—our citizens.”
For his part, Usec. Carolina noted the value of “continuing partnership between the public and private sector” during this time.”

Conan Exiles
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]After playing Conan Exiles for a full month, grinding out hours and hours of game time with friends from all across the world that I have carried through from Ark: Survival Evolved, I can genuinely say that I have a sense of what exactly this game has to offer.
First of all, I want to thank the Developers of this game, Funcom, for taking time out their lives to make this gem. Conan Exiles is an Open World survival based video game that tests the limits of man. If you are a fan of these types of game, then boy have I got some good news for you! Conan Exiles offers the most versatile and complex survival experience I have encountered thus far, giving the player control of everything you can imagine. Everything from your religion and race to your character traits and abilities are customizable with progress, this creates a more unique experience per player on servers.
Conan Exiles is obviously based in the world and realm of Conan, which is an old franchise with a huge name originating as far back as 1932. The most famous version was the movie, where Conan the Barbarian is played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. I think they used this name to create a sort of world and experience around that character and premise, however, you only really see Conan in the beginning when he cuts you down from a cross and give you some hardcore advice about surviving the vast land of the Exiles. There are monsters, animals, and NPC’s that roam this land, with some (if not, all) trying to kill you. Oh, and also, the environment is trying to kill you too, well not trying but it does. From sandstorms to brutal falls, you can pretty much die around every bend.
The game has its bug and glitches, which is perfectly fine. You are playing an open-world survival game that’s environment is continuously changing and molding, if you expect a flawless gameplay then your expectations and reality are skewed. The game runs perfectly and I experienced A LOT less challenges compared to playing Rust, Ark and Skyrim.
Visually, the game isn’t exactly fantastic. Independently, the game is subpar and definitely lacks that finish that gives AAA titles that “Je Ne Sais Quoi”. When comparing it to other similar type genre of games, the game is definitely one step above the rest, detailed and precise in comparison. There is one thing I can give this game and that is the distance rendering and anti-aliasing on things like distant sand storms, pure perfection and “eyegasmic”.
Having never actually played this previously on PC or XBOX, I was opened up to the Conan Exile world fresh and new, probably with a huge number of improvements before official release. The interface and menus are easy to navigate and pretty self-explanatory, which is great, considering that there is basically no tutorial, well barely. The game style and movements are a little rigid but smooth once you learn to maneuver your character through the different terrains. The building mechanics on Conan are definitely some the best I have seen. Besides being extremely hard to craft, the building can be fun and you can real creative with the non-restricted building type (TAKE SOME NOTES ARK). But gameplay, overall, is a great experience, the 3rd person really works here and this is probably my favourite open world survival user interactions thus far.
Overall, probably one of the best survival games in the market at the moment. With some rumoured patches coming through, like the ability to tame animals and use them as farmers, gathers, etc., I expected this game to only get better and better.

First I’m truly surprised at how good the Batman/The Flash: The Button collection is and this is not a slight to the skill and talent of the creative teams. It’s just I’ve been BURNED these last few mega crossover events and this being a tie-in to one of these, I came in with low expectations. And that’s not the only reason I passed over these books initially.
As a fan of The Watchmen, I haven’t been the biggest supporter of rehashing this universe. Despite the lineup of talent, I’m not big on the idea of that universe intersecting with the DCU proper.
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The deluxe edition of The Button collects Batman #21-22 and The Flash #21-22, with all of the variant covers for you to eyegasam. And without spoiling too much here’s why you should give it a read.
The feel of the book takes me back to Batman’s Brave and the Bold days, where each month he would team up with a different character of the DCU. Picking up the story from DC Universe: Rebirth #1, Batman and the Flash continue to investigate the mysterious Button that appeared in the Batcave when Wally West returned to the DCU. This investigation gives the heroes a few more clues to who has been influencing their world for the past few years, setting the stage for the next event Doomsday Clock.
Writers Tom King and Joshua Willamson bring to the table an ability to highlight unique traits in characters, and this is one of several reasons why I really enjoyed this book. The way they connect Batman and the Flash with forensic science is so simple and basic, that it makes them work as friends on such a higher level. I haven’t been reading King’s run on Batman, I’ve heard good things, but this makes me curious about it. And these guys work on pulling your heartstrings with some interesting story beats.
The art team for these books also bring their “A game.” Jason Fabok‘s art is as clean and sharp as ever, but it’s his subtle nod to the art and style of Dave Gibbons’ original Watchmen, using a grid pattern for the storytelling. That helps enhance his beautiful line work with the visual brutality that fills most of this chapter.
And I’ve missed Howard Porter’s art, I’ve been a fan of his stuff since his run on JLA with all the dynamic, over the top, hyper-kinetic energy, which is perfect for The Flash, even when he’s not running Porter has energy crackling off of the Flash giving you the sense that he is Speed.
Putting the cherries on top, the colors by Brad Anderson on Bats and Hi-Fi for the Flash bring a rich depth to these books that play off of Batman’s dark tones and the Flashes intense vibrant flare. Assists also go to Deron Bennett and Steve Wands on the lettering, bringing the words to the page might seem easy but there is an art to using it to help guide the reader and not distract from the art.
Please note if you’re looking for a Christmas gift for someone who likes Batman or the Flash, but don’t regularly read the comics, this might not be the right gift as it’s a stepping stone from a previous one-shot to a bigger event coming up. If they like a good story with amazing art for under $20 this makes a great stocking stuffer or Secret Santa gift.
If you want a second opinion about The Button, check out another opinion from the GP team here.

Tanduay partners with Shopee to launch online store
MANILA, Philippines, July 18, 2018 – Tanduay Distillers Inc., makers of the world’s number one selling rum brand, has recently partnered with Shopee, the leading Singapore-based e-commerce platform with 12 million users in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, to launch the Tanduay brand international online store.
The e-commerce store features carefully curated products previously available only at the Tanduay store in Century Park Hotel such as original apparel, bags, and accessories. This dedicated in-app space will allow shoppers to easily access authentic premium items and products from one of the country’s well-loved Filipino brands.

Paul Lim, chief marketing officer of Tanduay, said the partnership with Shopee is aligned with the strategy of the company to continuously improve ways and find new avenues to make Tanduay accessible to a broader market.
“Tanduay is now an official Shopee partner. Online shopping has continued to gain traction in the region with the increasing internet and smartphone penetration. We are excited about the opportunities that our partnership will open for our business. As of now, the move is consistent with our core strategies to reach a growing global market of online shoppers,” Lim shared.

Brand manager Edzel Ty further said that more products are expected to be added to the Tanduay Brands International online store in the succeeding months. “We have chosen to partner with Shopee because insights from all our marketing efforts point towards the future of commerce online. With Shopee, we are making our products available to them with several payments and delivery options all for their convenience,“ he explained.
Last June, global spirits think tank Drinks International revealed Tanduay has taken over the world’s number one spot from a list of rum brands that has long been dominated by Bacardi.
Tanduay Distillers Inc. is a member of the LT Group of Companies. Tanduay is the Philippines’ top rum maker, which is also distributed in the United States. Likewise, the company produces whiskey, brandy, gin, vodka and other flavored spirits.

WWF Continues to Fight Against Plastic Pollution, Advocates for an Extended Producer Responsibility Scheme in the Philippines
Plastic pollution has reached gigantic dimensions worldwide and has caused serious consequences to marine life and the wellbeing of society. In a recent study, it has been estimated that about 11 million tonnes enter the ocean every year. If no action is made, this can triple by 2040 which is equivalent to 50 kg of plastics for every coastline meter worldwide.
The Philippines, based on a 2015 modelling study, has been considered as one of the 10 top countries contributing to plastic pollution, has been continuously challenged with increasing waste generation and the lack of a sound waste management system. This calls for a comprehensive approach among policy makers, corporations, cities, and consumers to ensure that no plastics reaches nature.
Building on its No Plastics in Nature initiative, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines releases a report entitled “Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Scheme Assessment for Plastic Packaging Waste in the Philippines”. This report, undertaken with cyclos GmbH and AMH Philippines Inc, highlights EPR as a critical and effective policy tool in holding manufacturers accountable for the end-of-life impacts of their plastic products and packaging. EPR as a policy instrument also encourages adoption of holistic eco-design among the business sector. The proposed EPR scheme has been based on the findings of the first Material Flow Analysis of plastic packaging waste in the Philippines.

Snapshot from a recycling facility in Quezon City, taken during a field visit last February 2020. Photograph © Czarina Constantino / WWF-Philippines
The report shows that Filipinos consume a yearly average of 20kg of plastics, from which 15.43kg/cap/year becomes waste. Insufficient recycling capacities for high value recyclables (i.e. PET, PP, HDPE) and the high volume of low value plastics (including sachets) are factors that affect the country’s low plastic recycling rate, at 9%. The report further estimates that the Philippines leaks about 35% of plastic wastes into the environment.
These waste reduction and management conditions shaped the proposed customized EPR scheme in the Philippines. It proposes a mandatory EPR scheme for all product packaging with a three-year transition phase for obliged businesses to redesign their product packaging and eliminate unnecessary plastics. For this customized EPR scheme to work, the report emphasizes that the responsibility of implementing the scheme for building high-quality recycling capacity should be assumed by a non-profit Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO), acting as the system operator, with strict monitoring and control systems carried out by the government.
“We in WWF believe that a mandatory EPR system is a way for businesses to be more engaged in eliminating unnecessary plastics through eco-design and strengthening waste management by being responsible for the end of life impacts of their plastic packaging. It is a driving mechanism for businesses to transform their models and push for circular solutions to reduce plastic generation including refilling and ultimately to eliminating leakage of plastic in nature. Adopting the EPR scheme in the Philippines is a great driver for us to stop plastic pollution,” says Czarina Constantino, WWF-Philippines’ National Lead for the No Plastics In Nature Initiative and Project Manager for Plastic Smart Cities.

Snapshot from a recycling facility in Quezon City, taken during a field visit last February 2020. Photograph © Czarina Constantino / WWF-Philippines
A key first step is a clear, effective, and unambiguous legal framework towards EPR. This can only happen if policy makers take a bold and decisive step to put this globally recognized waste reduction and management scheme in place. A legal framework for EPR should outline clear objectives, responsibilities, enforcement mechanisms, and a timeline for implementation and targets. The effectiveness of the EPR system relies on the active role of government to regulate and supervise the system and its operator through a legal framework. This is also aligned to the ASEAN Framework of Action on Marine Debris that enjoins member states like the Philippines to develop and implement EPR policies and schemes.
Facilitating partnerships among relevant stakeholders, most notably the government and the private sector, WWF-Philippines advocates for the adoption of the EPR scheme in the country to stop plastic pollution.
“Addressing plastic pollution requires both upstream (production/pre-consumption) and downstream measures (consumption and post consumption). Working on the entirety of the plastic life cycle, stakeholder collaboration is important in both reducing the production and the consumption of unnecessary plastic, and also in managing plastic products and packaging, ensuring that materials are used as long as possible in our society,” says Joel Palma, WWF-Philippines’ Executive Director.
Nestlé Philippines, one of the leading producers of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) in the country, encouraged fellow stakeholders to do their part for nature by supporting the localized EPR scheme.
“At Nestlé, we believe that tackling plastic waste cannot be successfully achieved by a single or linear solution. It requires the attention and action of different stakeholders. We must look into different options both upstream and downstream, and take a holistic approach as we continue accelerating our initiatives to tackle plastic waste and EPR is a major instrument. We support the creation of a localized EPR scheme that we believe can help increase collection and recycling rates. We cannot achieve this alone, we must work together, to achieve a waste-free future," says Arlene Tan-Bantoto, SVP and Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications of Nestlé Philippines.
The study is part of the No Plastic in Nature Initiative - WWF’s global initiative to stop the flow of plastics entering nature by 2030 through elimination of unnecessary plastics, doubling reuse, recycling and recovery, and ensuring remaining plastic is sourced responsibly. Through this initiative, WWF-Philippines has been working with cities on plastic leakage, policy makers to advocate for a global treaty on plastic pollution, businesses to transition to circular business models, and the general public to campaign and act.
Take part to #ChangeTheEnding for our planet and help work towards a vision of no plastics in nature.

A strong finish: Nursing student and fitness coach hailed as Century Tuna Everybod Superbod 2020 winners

Century Tuna Everybod Superbod 2020 grand winners and #StayStrong Champions Samantha Ashley Lo and Sam Ajdani
In a landmark event hailed as a strong and successful finish amid the pandemic, Century Tuna Superbods 2020 named nursing student and ESL instructor Samantha Ashley Lo and fitness coach and professional model Sam Ajdani as the Century Tuna Everybod Superbod title holders. The most anticipated health and fitness event of the year was also a momentous occasion as it set the standards for future online events in the new normal.
Held at the Blue Leaf Cosmopolitan in Quezon City, the finals event followed strict adherence to the FDCP-DOH-DOLE safety protocols for film and audio-visual shoots.
“We needed to rise up to the challenge. We knew it was going to be tough but we stayed focused and if we’re able to pull this off successfully then at least we are able to provide a template for the industry to learn from and use. We soldiered on despite the challenges to show that it can be done,” said Century Pacific Food Inc. EVP & COO Greg Banzon. He also added, “It’s important to stage the event to provide inspiration and a good benchmark for the country to put health, wellness and fitness as the top priority.”
The success of the event amid the pandemic made their victory even more memorable for both Samantha (27) and Sam (30). Sam, who is a professional commercial model, admitted that one of the most challenging part of the competition was trying to stay healthy given the restrictions of the pandemic. Meanwhile, Samantha, who is a former Miss Grand International Philippines winner, had to strengthen her focus and remain creative in her home workouts, even when she could not go the gym. Their persistence and commitment to stay strong and focused paid off when they were proclaimed winners of the biggest health and fitness competition in the country.
Samantha and Sam bested 25 other Superbods candidates and will each take home Php 500,000 tax-free cash and other amazing prizes. Both winners passed rigorous digital challenges required during the competition to emerge as the new ambassadors of Century Tuna Superbods 2020—health and fitness advocates who are passionate in promoting health and wellness as an everyday commitment especially during these trying times. They are also exceptional individuals who remain optimistic and believe in getting back up again even after falling so many times.
Meanwhile, the runners-up were Superbod 2020 Stunner Candice Ramos and Superbod 2020 Ageless Erie Matic. Other candidates who took home special awards were Shirley Garcia, Zai Ebido, Enzo Bonoan, Samantha Purvor, Philippe Magalona, Nelson Banzuela, Key Trajano, Albert Lorenzo, and Grace Del Rosario.
The 25 finalists were all strong contenders, showcasing inspiring traits and skills to encourage themselves and their fellow Filipinos to keep going, and remain healthy and strong during these trying times.
The finalists were judged by a distinguished panel of judges. Joining Century Pacific Food Inc. In the pursuant to delay the US Troops to get after President Aguinaldo’s Escape, Gregorio Del Pilar and 60 of his men formed a blocking force at Tirad Pass, Concepcion, Ilocos Sur Province. They constructed several sets of trenches and stone barricades, all of which dominated the narrow trail that zigzagged up towards the pass.

The first important fighting of MacArthur's northward movement was at Quingua (now Plaridel), Bulacan Province, on April 23. It was a two-part battle. The first phase was a brief victory for the young Filipino general Gregorio del Pilar over the American Cavalry led by Major (later Maj. Gen.) On June 4, 1899, Aguinaldo was in San Isidro, Nueva Ecija, heading to Angeles, when he employed del Pilar as the hatchetman, torturer. Aguinaldo was determined to liquidate Luna and his officers. Del Pilar was given the instruction of capturing Luna, dead or alive for Luna had been “accused of high treason.” When he got to Luna’s headquarters in Bayambang, only General Alejandrino, who scorned Del Pilar while receiving Del Pilar lying down in his bed, was there. He found out that Luna went to Cabanatuan, where Luna received his gruesome fate, which we witnessed being depicted by Heneral Luna in the cinemas, on June 5, 1899. He then turned his attention to the liquidation of the officers of Luna, most notably Capt. Jose Bernal, Maj. Manuel Bernal, Gen. Venancio Concepcion and Gen. Jose Alejandrino. Jose Bernal was assassinated in Angeles by troops of Col. Aquino. Manuel Bernal was tortured then summary-executed by Del Pilar’s henchmen. General Concepcion was relieved of command. General Alejandrino could have been killed by Del Pilar’s men, mistaking him as General Luna, but luckily saved by soon-to-be-General Urbano Lacuna’s clarification on Alejandrino’s identity. Aguinaldo also had plans to dispose Alejandrino, but knowing that the General’s brother, Joaquin, was part of the formidable Tinio brigade, which they were seeing as their savior, spared the latter’s life, assigning him to Mangatarem, La Union, then under General Lacuna in Mt. Arayat.

Tanduay is grateful to the farmers and distillers behind its products, as it won five medals from the Beverage Testing Institute.
“This is good news not just for us but for the entire country as well, as our products are all proudly Philippine-made. During these challenging times, let us not forget what makes this country great and it’s our people. We raise a glass to our sugarcane farmers and distillers. Without them, Tanduay would not have perfected its process of creating the world’s number one rum and continued its success for more than 100 years,” said Vice President for Sales and Marketing Paul Lim.

Tanduay Asian Rum Gold topped the list with a gold medal. One of Tanduay’s most awarded products, it is known for its smooth flavor with the richness of vanilla and notes of oak on its finish. It is aged in used bourbon barrels for seven years.
Silver medals, meanwhile, were awarded to Tanduay Asian Rum Silver and Boracay Cappuccino Flavored Rum.
Tanduay Double Rum and Boracay Coconut Flavored Rum both received bronze medals.

Experience more Japan with JAL’s new early flight: Manila to Tokyo via Haneda
The newest flight service from Japan Airlines (JAL) is giving Filipinos the chance to enjoy more experiences in the land of the rising sun. Starting February 1, travelers can take the Manila-Tokyo (via Haneda) route and land in Japan by 5AM. The direct flight is the earliest to arrive from the Philippines, helping travelers maximize their itinerary as early as day one.

From ramen, to izakaya, to onsen, to sakura, Japan continues to capture the imagination of Filipinos, prompting seasoned travelers to make return trips and an increasing influx of first-time visitors. Since 2012, the number of Filipinos visiting Japan has been rising by 20 percent. The new route comes in time as even more are encouraged to take the trip with Japan's easier Visa requirements for Filipinos declared in mid-2018.
“We’ve seen more Filipinos are acting on their desire to visit Japan as we welcomed the more than 400,000 tourists from the Philippines in 2017. As the flag carrier, we are very proud to be part of the Filipino tourist’s journey as we extend the Japanese experience from the moment you step on board to the moment you arrive in Japan,” declares Chikara Mochihara, General Manager of JAL – Manila.
The Haneda airport also has more local connections than Narita, which means tourists have easier and more convenient access to domestic destinations. Transportation services to and from the airport start early and travelers can be in Tokyo, Shibuya, Tsukiji, Roppongi, or Akihabara in less than 30 minutes; or Shinjuku and Ueno in less than 40 minutes.

"You can take your pick of which part of Japan to enjoy and get there still on-time for an authentic Japanese breakfast. Of course, it is not just breakfast and there is more to experience and enjoy in Japan with our new flight connection. You have the whole first day to see more sights, try more activities, taste more food, and really immerse in everything else Japan offers," he adds.
JAL’s promise of efficient, on-time and convenient flights are backed up by recognition from the industry. It has been awarded the World’s Most Punctual Airline by Flightstats for five years now, and its economy class with expanded legroom has been awarded the World’s Best Economy Class by Skytrax.
For a limited time, the airline is also offering special fares until February 16 for travel until July 31. Economy class fares are available for USD320 and business class for USD1,099, all with full-service inclusions.
Learn more about JAL’s new flight on their website. (http://www.ph.jal.co.jp/phl/en/mnlhnd/)

The Stress Response: Understanding and Reducing Its Effects on Your Health
Did you know that our body does not discriminate between sources of stress – it simply responds to the stress. So, whether the stress is coming from an actual event – like a car nearly hitting you—or simply a thought – I wonder if I will get hit by a car someday – the body may react in a similar way. Now, in these times when there is so much uncertainty, stress can have a huge impact on our bodies.
So, what is the “stress response” and why do we have it?
In a nutshell, it is for our own survival. You see, we are geared towards survival and our minds are constantly on a threat alert. Some have called this the “fight or flight” response. I think we all know how it feels – the sudden increase in heart rate, perhaps increased respiration, all meant to prepare the body with oxygen needed to suddenly move into action. Underlying this is a shower of hormones that stimulate the body’s actions but also have impacts on other aspects of our health.
We increase the circulation of adrenaline, known as epinephrine, that activates our heart rate, but it also stimulates the release of glucose and fat from storage sites as a source of fuel. If left unchecked a second response happens that causes the release of cortisol into the blood stream. Cortisol increases the amount of glucose in our bloodstream and can stimulate hunger which can lead to eating more calories than we actually need and thus becoming overweight or obese.
What does all of this mean when we are under stress from COVID-19 worries?
Acute stress can be both helpful and harmful to our body. It can be helpful as it forces us to be vigilant in protecting ourselves and our loved ones. It can be harmful because it causes our blood pressure to rise and our heart rate to increase, and for those who have underlying cardiovascular disease, this may trigger a heart attack or stroke.
However, what is of greater concern is a state of chronic stress, such as many people are experiencing in this time of uncertainty. In this state, the body is continuously activated, resulting in elevated blood pressure and weight gain, which are factors in cardiovascular disease. Additionally, cortisol is known to reduce the production of our immune protective cells known as lymphocytes. In the acute phase, we may actually see an increase of these cells, but as we move to a more chronic state of stress the cortisol release leads us to a decrease of lymphocytes making us potentially more susceptible to ineffectively fighting off infection.
Overcoming the “stress response”
So, our perception of threat is what creates a cascade called a stress response. That response is natural IF there is an actual threat AND if momentary. However, our health, through the possible impact on weight and blood pressure, can be negatively impacted by this stress cascade if not managed well.
Focusing on reducing our stress and improving our health can be accomplished with a handful of simple practices. I call them my 6 Rs.
1. Rest - First, get enough sleep! Adequate sleep is extremely helpful in calming down the stress response.
2. Relaxation techniques - Deep breathing – whether done through meditation exercises or while you are doing yoga – the key is slow, intentional deep breathing!
3. Recreation – Keep active while practicing social distancing – whether that means a walk or reading a book (something you love to do). Taking time for yourself doing something you love to do that involves some form of activity (mental or physical) is helpful!
4. Relationships – staying connected is so important. We are meant to be in community. We may be physically isolated but that does not mean we need to lose our connections to others. Telephone or video calls can be a great way to stay connected.
5. Routine – yup, in the midst of change why add another one. Stay consistent. Suddenly need to work from home – then get up at the same time, set up an office and work like you normally would.
6. Reframing – reassess the perceived stress so it no longer is viewed as a threat. You may need the help of a coach to help you through the practice of first identifying why something is viewed as a threat and then placing that into a context that is helpful.
At Herbalife Nutrition we have a global nutrition philosophy that recognizes the importance of a holistic approach to health and thus a more resilient response. Managing your stress is one critical component. We also believe in the power of community and the importance of a coach who can help you on your journey towards improved health.
