@jayson_keeling @matthewdayjackson @rashaadnewsome @elcleonardo @tulsaartistfellowship @davidcastillogallery @the_breeder_gallery Today, I lost an old friend.  I haven't been able to fully articulate it.  I have been watching old videos and revisiting that time.  I was just telling someone last night that I miss my youth.  I was talking about my twenties and early thirties.  I met Jayson Keeling shortly after I moved to NYC.  When I didn't have a place of my own and was renting a room up in Harlem, he let me sleep on his couch plenty of nights and assisted me in creating my videos.  I was literally working my way out of some dark moments and he was there to help.  R.I.P. Throwback Thursday. 15 years ago I created Conversations Wit De Churen II: All My Churen. This work was my graduate thesis and it opened many doors for me. I have to say I have not achieved everything I set out, but I am grateful I have this work to circle back to. It reminds of a period when I dreamed freely, I was somewhat innocent, a twenty-five year old kid ;-) Now, I'm an almost 41 year old kid wondering where the time went. I assuming it is not too late to manifest those things I have not yet achieved. This was my MFA Thesis project at the University of South Florida in 2003. I graduated that same year. Two years later, it helped launch my career. The New York Times' Holland Cotter writes, "Television soap opera is Mr. Linzy's primary, though not sole, inspiration. And this particular melodrama, with its Byzantine subplots, revolves around the tortured emotional life of a voluble young woman named Nucuazia and the death of an acquaintance named JoJo, whom we take to be her lover, in a drive-by shooting. The story has oodles of intrigue (not to mention loose ends), heartbreak aplenty (crying jags culminating in a confrontational, cathartic memorial service) and at least one major surprise...If most of the characters, including Nucuazia's sharp-tongued mother, soft-touch grandmother, wastrel brother and brusque corporate executive sister, share an uncanny family resemblance, it is because Mr. Linzy plays them all, brilliantly." Description: Linzy continues his episodic soap-opera series Conversation Wit de Churen with Episode VII, in which Linzy portrays the melodramatic life of a fictional family. This storyline follows Katonya and several other characters through misguided love affairs punctuated with dreams and distraction. The artist serves as writer, director, cinematographer, editor, and actor—and, in a distinctive strategy, also voices and overdubs the dialogue of multiple characters. Episode VII combines live action with animated dream sequences which were developed in residency at PICA and in collaboration with LAIKA/house. From his original take on the soap opera and family drama to his foul-mouthed music videos and filmic shorts, Linzy’s work is an exploration of the emotional realities of aspiration, disappointment, sexuality, and belonging. This project is made possible in part by a grant from the National Performance Network’s Visual Artists Network.
