Larry Hall, an ex-US government contractor has built an underground anti-nuclear village capable of sheltering up to 75 people for at least five years – and you can buy a unit if you’re rich.
Tumblr media
The Survival Condo or Luxury Survival Condo Project is an old Atlas ICBM missile silo turned into a 15-story underground bunker in Kansas.
Tumblr media
Penthouses are 2 floors and cost $4.5M. (Notice the fake scenery in the windows.)
Tumblr media
A full floor unit is $3M.
Tumblr media
And, a half floor unit is $1.5M.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are all sorts of amenities like a Whole Foods-inspired market. I don’t care if it has a pickle barrel, it doesn’t look like a general store.
Tumblr media
And an aquaponics lab where villagers can grow their own fruits and vegetables. If residents want to bring their own food they can. There are walk-in freezers where they can store it. So, for instance, if they’re going to be locked down for 7 years, they can bring 7 turkeys to save for Thanksgiving.
Tumblr media
There’s a theater.
Tumblr media
Pool. A psychologist was hired to plan the residents’ psychological wellbeing. She told them what was needed to keep people from suffering from “cabin fever” and stop functioning normally due to boredom.
Tumblr media
They need a gym. (7 yrs. in here, though? I’m getting depressed just thinking about it.)
Tumblr media
And, a game room.
Tumblr media
A park, but, it still looks so dreary.  Say you want an underground mosque or a concealed subterranean helicopter hanger linked by a tunnel directly to your unit, you can have it for more money.
Tumblr media
There’s even a shooting range.
Tumblr media
The surveillance center
Tumblr media
A medical facility, too. (But, what if you need medication or surgery?)
Tumblr media
So, I guess this is part of the power plant.
Tumblr media
This website, http://www.wholesurvival.com/shelter, however, isn’t buying it. (Oh, and he found the exact location, b/c they refuse to reveal it, but he won’t say, either.)

Worldbuilding Facts (Reboot AU)
Moving onto the world building aspect- humanity in this version of Transformers: Prime has technology that’s a bit more advanced- not too ahead of it’s time period, but way ahead of 2011 since, unlike the original show, this takes place in 2023. Things like cloaking fields and warp drives are still in their prototype stage- and the existence of these inventions is partially due to Energon leaking into Earth's soil in several parts of the world. This makes it so that humanity is just beginning to explore space beyond the moon.
***
The Autobot base- otherwise known as Outpost Omega One- is still located inside a mountain in one of Nevada’s more remote areas, since that’s the location that makes the most sense strategy-wise. It used to be a Cold War missile silo before it was converted, just like in the original- and as a result, it’s shielded against radio signals and is operated using a blend of Cybertronian technology and old human machinery- which Jack is ECSTATIC about taking apart and examining for the purpose of reverse-engineering and upgrading them.
***
Jasper isn’t just some small little backwater town in the middle of Nevada- it’s more similar to DC, in which a good portion of the county is suburban neighborhoods and public areas with a whole 40% being an urban city district due to the town being close to Las Vegas in this AU. Jack and Raf live in the suburban areas, with the latter sometimes taking trips to the city to run errands.
And as for what the city itself looks like? It’s towering skyscrapers and blinding lights galore. Parks, libraries, several grocery stores and bodegas, multiple small businesses, casinos, salons, boutiques, multiple cultural enclaves including a Chinatown, a bustling night market, a cultural museum, a literal Financial District, an entire metro system- the city has it all.
***
As for more settings other than the primary settings of Autobot base and Jasper County, since I'm going hardcore with this AU- far out in the Kuiper Belt orbits the Salsotto Space Station, a colossal museum-like starship doubling as a state-of-the-art advanced research facility. It's the personal property of Dr. Stephen Arkeville, the founder of the Fellowship of Geniuses and a leading pioneer of research investigating into space travel, as well as the discovery and observation of extraterrestrial lifeforms. It's the setting of a few episodes throughout the series.
The people living in the space station primarily consist of researchers of all sorts of different backgrounds, of whom are assigned to different departments based on their areas of study and their individual strengths. Of course- Dr. Arkeville himself, being the lead researcher and owner of the entire space station, is the most accomplished among them, having been the one to invent warp drives in the first place and discover the existence of Energon in the first place.

Russia moved 10 aircraft capable of transporting nuclear weapons to Belarus
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 25/03/2023 - 19:16 in Military, War Zones
Russia allegedly transferred 10 aircraft to Belarus that are capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons, after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an agreement with the country's leader. This is the first time since the mid-1990s that Moscow will base such weapons outside the country.
The measure, reported by the TASS news agency, fueled fears of an escalation in the conflict with Ukraine. Putin made the announcement at a time of growing tensions with the West over the war in Ukraine and while some Russian commentators speculate on possible nuclear attacks.
Putin told state television that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko had long raised the issue of parking tactical nuclear weapons in his country.
“There is also nothing unusual here: first of all, the United States has been doing this for decades. They have long positioned their tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of their allied countries," he said.
“We agreed with [Belarusian President Alexander] Lukashenko that we would put tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus without violating the non-proliferation regime,” Putin said.
Tumblr media
"Tactical" nuclear weapons refer to those used for specific gains on the battlefield, rather than those with the capacity to destroy cities. It is not clear how many of these weapons Russia has, since it is an area still shrouded in Cold War secrecy traditions.
Putin claimed that he would not violate nuclear non-proliferation agreements, since the U.S. already has these weapons stationed in Europe, according to the agency. Belarus borders three NATO members – Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
On July 1, Russia will complete the construction of a storage facility in the territory of Belarus, the RBU reported.
He added that on April 3 Moscow will begin training teams to operate aircraft converted to use tactical weapons.
In December, Russia moved a Yars strategic missile to the Tver region of Russia, northwest of Moscow. Two more Yars missiles were installed in silos in Kozelsk in the same week.
This change occurred shortly after the despot increased the number of his strategic nuclear bombers stationed at an air base near the Finnish and Norwegian borders.
Tumblr media
Su-24 from Belarus.
In August last year, the authoritarian ruler of Belarus, Alyaksandr Lukashenko, said that his country's Su-24 military planes were re-equipped to allow the transport of nuclear weapons.
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, nuclear weapons were deployed in the four newly independent states of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
In May 1992, the four states agreed that all weapons should be based in Russia and the transfer of warheads from Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan was completed in 1996.

On the one hand I don't really want to travel to America again any time soon and on the other hand here's an airbnb in Roswell that's a converted missile silo (it's expensive but not prohibitively so).
Anyway I wonder how much asbestos is in that thing.

Many of those seriously seeking a safe haven simply hire one of several prepper construction companies to bury a prefab steel-lined bunker somewhere on one of their existing properties. Rising S Company in Texas builds and installs bunkers and tornado shelters for as little as $40,000 for an 8ft by 12ft emergency hideout all the way up to the $8.3m luxury series “Aristocrat”, complete with pool and bowling lane. The enterprise originally catered to families seeking temporary storm shelters, before it went into the long-term apocalypse business. The company logo, complete with three crucifixes, suggests their services are geared more toward Christian evangelist preppers in red-state America than billionaire tech bros playing out sci-fi scenarios.
There’s something much more whimsical about the facilities in which most of the billionaires – or, more accurately, aspiring billionaires – actually invest. A company called Vivos is selling luxury underground apartments in converted cold war munitions storage facilities, missile silos, and other fortified locations around the world. Like miniature Club Med resorts, they offer private suites for individuals or families, and larger common areas with pools, games, movies and dining. Ultra-elite shelters such as the Oppidum in the Czech Republic claim to cater to the billionaire class, and pay more attention to the long-term psychological health of residents. They provide imitation of natural light, such as a pool with a simulated sunlit garden area, a wine vault, and other amenities to make the wealthy feel at home.
On closer analysis, however, the probability of a fortified bunker actually protecting its occupants from the reality of, well, reality, is very slim. For one, the closed ecosystems of underground facilities are preposterously brittle. For example, an indoor, sealed hydroponic garden is vulnerable to contamination. Vertical farms with moisture sensors and computer-controlled irrigation systems look great in business plans and on the rooftops of Bay Area startups; when a palette of topsoil or a row of crops goes wrong, it can simply be pulled and replaced. The hermetically sealed apocalypse “grow room” doesn’t allow for such do-overs.
Just the known unknowns are enough to dash any reasonable hope of survival. But this doesn’t seem to stop wealthy preppers from trying. The New York Times reported that real estate agents specialising in private islands were overwhelmed with inquiries during the Covid-19 pandemic. Prospective clients were even asking about whether there was enough land to do some agriculture in addition to installing a helicopter landing pad. But while a private island may be a good place to wait out a temporary plague, turning it into a self-sufficient, defensible ocean fortress is harder than it sounds. Small islands are utterly dependent on air and sea deliveries for basic staples. Solar panels and water filtration equipment need to be replaced and serviced at regular intervals. The billionaires who reside in such locales are more, not less, dependent on complex supply chains than those of us embedded in industrial civilisation.
  —  The super-rich ‘preppers’ planning to save themselves from the apocalypse

What I was listening to the other day I can’t recall, but the subject under discussion was the late trend of wealthy people “prepping” by building entire compounds underground or in converted Minuteman missile silos.  I’d read about converted silos before, but in this instance I thought “Ah! So that’s where the Morlocks get their start!”
Tumblr media
Morlock carrying an Eloi from H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine by Virgil Finlay, 1950, via wikipedia.
As described in the segment, what money can deploy against some “doomsday” scenario far outstrips having a garage full of freeze-dried food. Instead, the thinking seems to be that after everything falls apart, these bunker dwellers will just keep going in their bunkers (a bunker mentality if ever there was one) and develop the “next thing” there in their, um, silos.  The rest of humanity may burn, but the rich will be around!  Of course there’s no plan for fixing anything that might break, or simply wear out, and if the world turns into a complete hellscape, who will they call?  Amazon?  EBay?  Nope, they’ll be gone, too.  3D print a replacement?  Maybe.  Sooner or later, though, the lack of supply chains or “economies of scale” will tell on them.
Tumblr media
Yvette Mimieux menaced by a Morlock in MGM’s 1960 film version.
That’s when it occurred to me that it sounded like a possible scenario that would lead to the Morlocks of Wells’ The Time Machine, that, having been separated from any other survivors of the apocalypse (if there are any) and settling in for the really long-term under cover of dirt, eventually they’d just go all mutant human, afraid of the sun.

We’ve seen elaborate converted old missile silos and last week we saw one that was very sloppily put together. Today, I found one in Kimball, Nebraska that I think I would describe as “tacky.” However, it’s very well-equipped.
Tumblr media
For instance, it has a 16,000 gal. filtered water system underground. Excellent. First things, first:
Tumblr media
It also has this blower that will filter nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare elements out of your air. This place is ready for the apocalypse.
Tumblr media
It also has an uninterruptible power system with automatic power transfer switches ready to go to wind and sun power, and hooked up to 2 diesel generators.
Tumblr media
These pipes are sewage ejectors that carry waste out to a septic tank and drain field. There’s more that I won’t go into.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, this is where the tackiness begins. Someone is a lover of gaudy gold stuff.
Tumblr media
You’ve got a living room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A kitchen. I hate the dated cabinets, but I’m not complaining.
Tumblr media
Even a pantry.
Tumblr media
Library/dining room combo.
Tumblr media
Bath with laundry.
Tumblr media
Guest room.
Tumblr media
Main bedroom.
Tumblr media
Looks like an office and sewing room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Underground patio and waterfall, w/some kind of pond- there’s an organ there. I wonder how the acoustics are down here.
Tumblr media
There’s one of the battery banks that’s charged by wind. The tanks suspended from the ceiling hold diesel fuel and water.
Tumblr media
Even a hot tub. All the comforts. It’s not clear if it’s for sale or how much it may have sold for.

Days 11-13: Kansas City MO ➡️ Wilson KS ➡️ Denver CO
Tuesday, September 13, 2022
Tumblr media
Another city, another state, more surprises! Kansas City, like St Louis, was rich in local history and culture. While most of my stay was dedicated to preparing for my upcoming journey into the wilderness, I did have the opportunity to take a tour of some local sites and neighborhoods with a well regarded historian: my cousin Drew of course (seriously he is a history professor at University of Missouri Kansas City, how lucky can I get?).
After I finished my errands (stocking up on food and also getting some warmer gear - forecast was for it to be pretty cold at night when I got to the parks of the Rocky Mountains), Drew took me to the World War I monument and museum. It was too late in the day to go inside the museum, but I got the full history from Drew, not only of the monument, but of Kansas City more broadly.
Tumblr media
I learned so much! Here’s a lightning round:
The KCMO WWI monument was the largest WWI monument built in the post WWI era
Many WWI memorials were converted to WWI + WWII monuments after WWII, because many cities didn’t have much funding to build secondary memorials
KCMO’s WWI monument remains the only dedicated WWI monument because the city had no funding to expand it to WWI+WWII
As you may have already noticed, the monument itself looks very phallic, and as such the gay male community decided to make it their local pickup spot
The entrance to the WWI museum is designed to resemble a WWI trench
KCMO has more theaters per capita than any other US city
KCMO was a big mafia town in the 20s, and prohibition was very loosely enforced there. People used to come to drink and party!
KCMO has one of the worst histories of redlining, and is still a heavily racially divided city
Tumblr media
After the tour, we returned home to enjoy dinner with JJ - she made her famous macaroni and cheese. This was a better local delicacy than the prior day’s BBQ. In fact, it smelled and looked so good that I forgot to take a picture!
I spent the evening packing and getting ready to start the journey to Denver on Wednesday.
Wednesday, September 14, 2022
In the morning, I woke up early to say goodbye to JJ and practice Yoga / Tai Chi with Drew on the beautiful backyard platform that he had built this past year. He helped me pack up the car again, this time full of food and water! I was finally prepared to launch a weeks worth of camping!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The drive across Kansas really surprised me. I expected Kansas to look similar to Michigan and Illinois, but the landscape is different. It’s drier and actually hillier. And there are spots where the original prairie ecosystem is preserved, due to the rocky topography making it difficult to farm.
I learned this because during the drive, I saw a sign for “National Tall Grass Prairie Conservation Site” - so I spontaneously turned off at the exit and went to find the scenic view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It blew me away, and not just because there was a pretty gusty breeze. Again and again on this trip the places I least expected have brought me some of the most enrichment. I thought Kansas was going to be a big flat bunch of nothing sitting between me and the Rocky Mountains. Little did I know, I actually have found the prairie lands to be the some of most beautiful nature I have seen on this trip!
After my prairie land pit stop, I hopped back in the car and drove straight to my campsite to make sure I had time to set up my car camper and make dinner before sunset.
The location: Ad Astra Missile Silo Adventure Park in Wilson Kansas.
Tumblr media
Never heard of it? Neither had I, but I found it looking on camping apps for somewhere to stay on the way from Denver from Kansas City.  It’s really amazing how technology has changed the camping experience - you can find campsites and read reviews on multiple apps like The Dyrt, Campspot, and even Google. I love how much safer it feels (and is) with these services available - I honestly don’t know if I would have done this trip the way I am if I didn’t have these resources!
Ad Astra was extremely highly rated by other travelers . And as the name suggests it is located on an abandoned Missile Silo, and it is also in the middle of a wind farm. Yep, I slept outside in a beautiful prairie the middle of a wind farm, to the sound of crickets and cicadas. It was basically a dream I never knew I had come true.
Tumblr media
The campsite was secluded, but close enough to other people that I felt both safe and like I could get some peace and quiet. I arrived at about an hour and a half before sunset, which gave me just enough time to unpack my things, set up camp, and cook  my first solo-prepped outdoor meal: pizza! Yes, you can make pizza a few different ways in the wild (in a frying pan or in a tin foil oven).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My car camping setup worked out fantastic for this first night out. I had spent a lot of time researching and planning, and I only made one (moderately sized) mistake with my gear setup, which was that I bought camp cookware that is incompatible (too big) with my JetBoil stove. At some point I’ll do an entire entry about my gear favorites, must haves and should have left homes, but today is not that day 😆.
Tumblr media
As you all saw from my little teaser preview post last week, the sunset was absolutely stunning in Kansas - the best one I’ve seen on the trip so far (and I finished this entry after having spent 4 days in Rocky Mountain National Park). It reminded me of a west coast sunset in the way that the horizon just stretches on for miles and miles and you can practically see the curve of the earth. When the sky is so big all around you it makes you feel small in the best way possible: it’s a reminder of our simultaneous insignificance and impact on this precious planet.
I got a decent nights sleep except that I woke up in the middle of the night because the moon was so bright that I thought it was morning! When morning really did come there was a gorgeous pink sunrise.
Tumblr media
Thursday, September 15, 2022
Before heading out from Ad Astra, I took the tour of the missile silo offered by Matthew, the owner and manager of the property. What a fascinating experience! I didn’t know that nuclear warfare technology had been evolving so quickly during the 1960s that the federal government built these many-multi-million-dollar silos, only to abandon them within a 5-year timeframe of construction.
Tumblr media
If you watched Lost, you might remember the bunker the characters discover — the silo reminded me so much of that. It went down 9+ stories underground and had the biggest HVAC system I’ve ever seen (very exciting to me given my professional background). The walls were made of 9ft thick concrete!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Matthew has a huge dream for converting the missile silo: In addition to operating a campsite and RV park on the grounds, he plans to create event spaces, a wellness center, and if he can raise the money, develop the silo into a sort of space travel preparedness camp / space museum. He is also using the property to showcase sustainable technologies, like the anaerobic digestion toilet that powers a cookstove!
All in all, A+ for Ad Astra!
Tumblr media
After the tour, I drove about 6.5 hours to Denver. The weather had forecast T-storms, and boy were they right. I ended up having to pull off the highway to a gas station to let the torrential downpours pass. And as a result, I also got to witness a beautiful rainbow!
Tumblr media
Driving towards Denver, the Rocky Mountains literally feel like they just pop out of nowhere. First, they look like a faint outline, and then all of a sudden, they are there, bursting out of the flat plain towards the heavens.
Finally, I collapsed exhausted into bed at the Fairfield Inn in Lakewood, CO. I needed to get a great nights sleep for my first big camping weekend in Rocky Mountain National Park!

Honestly I think the Half-Life series has the most varied locations out of any series I've played.
Like, just off the top of my head (and in no particular order), there's:
An underground facility
Big Machine Room™
Offices
A series of bunkers connected by a series of small trains
Waste-disposal facilities with Bond villain-level OSHA violations
A dam
An active warzone
Older parts of the facility, including an obsolete teleporter that is visibly less-advanced than the other ones.**
A rocket test silo
The trash compactor from Star Wars*
An alien dimension
The lair of a giant psychic fetus
A factory where one of the enemy types you've been fighting is manufactured
A beautiful alien jungle†
A less-beautiful-but-still-beautiful alien swamp†
An Eastern-European city occupied by giant psychic maggots
Tenement blocks
Canals
The interior of a giant alien tower
The interior of the same giant alien tower, after the top part exploded
"A bank or museum or something"
The abandoned subway system
A particularly awful hospital
The surrounding forests and beaches
An inn
A ruined Soviet prison that's been converted into a less-ruined alien storage facility
An abandoned Soviet missile base that has a hidden room with the DHARMA Initiative logo from Lost (as well as a CRT monitor with The Numbers on it)
A vodka distillery infested with alien fungi***
An abandoned zoo***
Other places
A different alien dimension (technically; you don't actually go there, but you get to see a bit of it through Breen's gunship-portal)
The arctic‡
*only in Opposing Force **only in Blue Shift ***only in Alyx †only in Black Mesa (2020) ‡only in Episode 3 concept art/Marc Laidlaw's non-canon Epistle 3

Hi! I love your thoughts on FC5 so I have a question. Did the Seeds build the bunkers? Those things are massive and complex, it would've taken them decades to build three of them and make them functional. Not to mention the costs. I don't think John was a billionaire. My theory is that they were there before, but abandoned. The Seeds just spruced them up.
Hi! And thank you :) So, yes, they built the bunkers… but not entirely. For example, we know John’s Gate originally was a missile silo, the aptly named Black Horse Silo, that the cult repurposed and transformed.
I looked for the descriptions of the three Heralds’ bunkers in Oasisstrings and found this:
John’s Gate: A missile silo long decommissioned and abandoned. The locals used to call it "Area 68." Eden's Gate bought it in secret and turned it into a bunker that is in John Seed's safekeeping until the Collapse.
Jacob’s Armory: Jacob has converted part of the McKinley Dam power station to be used as sanctuary against the coming apocalypse.
Faith’s Gate: A bunker under Faith's guardianship. It is shrouded in Bliss, ensuring that those who are sheltered here will not be frightened when the Collapse comes.
So your theory is correct, they indeed didn’t build them from scratch. Instead, they used a missile silo for John’s and a power station for Jacob’s. They don’t say anything about Faith’s bunker but it looks like it used to be a missile silo too. In the game, several NPCs and Eli himself say he helped the cult design and build their bunkers (at least Jacob’s), which confirms the original structures didn’t look exactly like this and they modified them.
In terms of cost, I suppose all or most of the people who worked on them were members of the Project and didn’t get paid. They probably had to buy materials, though, but NPCs say cultists are also collecting and using metal from the abandoned rail yard to fortify their bunkers. We don’t know how rich John was but the cult acquired a lot of properties thanks to his “lawyering superpowers”, as Merle says. To me, that suggests they managed to buy things for a ridiculously low price and even got some for free. They’re also not averse to threatening people so, in the end, money probably wasn’t that big of a problem.
I don’t know if it’s realistic but that explains how they managed to “build” three huge bunkers in just a few years.

Random life update!
so my birthday was Sunday, and on friday, my boyfriend made me think he forgot to plan anything for it. i tried to be cool about it but god, i was sad.
i’m not a birthday princess or anything, but i had a partner that was extraordinarily neglectful about birthdays, so it kinda ate at me a little. ESPECIALLY since this was my first birthday without my mother (she died in december.) still, i said i understood, that COVID was definitely making things difficult these days and that i was sure we could still have fun.
and on the day of, my foot went squarely down my throat, because oh my god 🥺
a few things:
my mom always used to send me flowers on my birthday. he remembered this, which was so lovely on its own. he also didn’t really know how to arrange the flowers himself, so he got HIS mother to help him.
it’s hard to explain in the short form, but if you know me well, then you realize why this trip was an absolutely perfect choice for me. oh, to be clear: it was a night in a Titan II missile silo that’d been converted for lodging. it’s been on my bucket list for years, but i only mentioned it to him in passing! not even in that context. just “did you know there’s a missile silo in vilonia that’s been converted into an AirBNB? weird, right?”
turns out he had had the whole thing planned for over a month. we’ve been dating for three.

it would be even funnier if krycek was somewhat regularly involved in williams life (evil uncle krycek) and never told them ab his son until the revenge plot. Judas is like: this is for when your dad left my dad in an abandoned missile silo!
and william is like: huh?? you mean uncle krycek?? he literally leaves his bright pink convertible in my parents’ driveway.
