Dorothy Liebes was a textile designer working from the 1930s through the 1960s, so she expressed the mid-century modern look in her fabrics for decor and for fashion. Liebes thought fashion for clothing was too fickle, but her hand-woven fabrics made for beautiful garments. Both Adrian and Bonnie Cashin made the most of her woven fabrics.
This show runs through February 4, 2024 in New York at the Cooper Hewitt. They also created a Digital Exhibition online for those of us who can't travel there to see it and the images of the fabrics are lush, and got me thinking of ways I would like to use them. A book of the exhibition is out at as well.

At the Cooper Hewitt today, which has a few interesting exhibitions at the moment (as well as a few overly politically correct 🙄). The one about the 1900 Paris Expo is nice, especially in combination with the one about the French architect/designer Hector Guimard, the guy who brought art nouveau to the Paris mètro. #cooperhewitt #hectorguimard (at Cooper Hewitt) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmYCf-tuCRR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#finding a brooch/pendant by #CarloGuiliano - from @cooperhewitt Museum. 19th c. #artofjewellery #jewelleryasinspiration #antiquejewelry #historyofjewelry #beautyofjewellery Neapolitan born Carlo Guiliano (c. 1831-1895) was probably trained in the workshop of the Castellani family in Rome. Around 1860 he felt confident to relocate to London where he produced jewels - bearing Giuliano marks - for firms such as Hunt and Roskell, Phillips and Hancock. He became so successful with his - often lozenge shaped pendants and brooches (such as this example), pierced in foliate and scroll designs, using enamel, pearls and gems - that he was able to set up his own shop on Piccadilly. After his death his two sons continued the business with similar success, until the start of the Great War in 1914 unfortunately ended it all. https://www.instagram.com/p/CnpIuPoIRTs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Take a moment to breathe in this "Summer Afternoon" (1872) by American painter and graphic artist Winslow Homer in our @cooperhewitt's collection. Homer was known for his Harper’s Weekly illustrations and robust depictions of nature, many completed at his seacoast home in Maine.

some people paint and some people write, some plant and grow and make food, and others make and build things, while others provide service, a form of serving the needs of others to live.
so many things being done and everyone on earth having the same amount of time each day.
people should be valued for the good being done, to have a sense of meaning in life, of purpose and design.
(yet all should embrace humility of heart & mind)
the point is, we’re all doing these individual things, and hopefully for the better.
we have a choice beginning with each thought, between what is pure or not.

Russel Wright (1904-1976)
American Modern Pottery by Bauer
USA, 1937
“In 1937, Wright designed the iconic American Modern dinnerware. The ceramic line came in a variety of soft pastels and earth tones with biomorphic shapes influenced by the surrealist Jean Arp. George Nelson attributed the designs of Wright as responsible for the American “shift towards the modern in the 1930s.” Wright’s mantra was “good design is for everyone” and in 1949 he created a new dishwasher-safe line. In 1950, the Wrights published their Guide to Easier Living, which laid out how to entertain guests in a suburban home. He began to experiment with the new medium of plastic, and his Flair line of melamine dishes was released in 1959. In 1965, he retired from designing and moved from New York to his summer home in Manitoga. Wright passed away in 1976. The Cooper Hewitt Museum of Design in New York honored Russel Wright with a retrospective of his objects in 2001. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, New York, among many others.”
“The biomorphic forms and softly vibrant color palette of Wright's American Modern service, made of sturdy and inexpensive earthenware, made it one of the most popular ceramic services ever created. The highly sculptural forms of some the pieces in this service, including the teardrop-shaped pitcher with elongated spout, were unlike any other products on the market. Wright promoted the service in novel ways, including offering a starter set of twelve pieces, to which consumers could add over time as their budget and lifestyle dictated. American Modern also came in six interchangeable colors, increasing consumer flexibility in assembling their services. As the best-selling ceramic service ever, Wright's dinnerware proved to be an especially successful example of the Good Design movement, which sought to make well-designed, modern goods available to consumers at every price point.”
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Ward Bennett (1917-2003)
Double Helix Stainless Steel Flatware Set, 1985
Sasaki, Japan
“I design interiors and furniture and flatware and so forth, but I think the way I live is maybe the most meaningful.”
- Ward Bennett
Bennett is credited as an American pioneer in the use of industrial materials for home furnishings – a prime example being his early ’60s I Beam Table, which employs a section of beam for a base.
Many his designs are in the permanent collection MoMA The Museum of Modern Art and the #cooperhewitt museum.
“There was nothing superfluous about Ward’s designs, nothing ‘extra,’” says Tim deFiebre, Bennett’s former assistant and keeper of his legacy. “They were always honed down to their bare essence.”

Cooper Hewitt has named its National Design Awards for 2023, and the fashion design winner is Naeem Kahn. Click through and you can see a gallery display of his designs, focusing on his evening wear. But I think anyone interested in fashion design will probably be interested in all the winners' work.

#pattern #sculpture #lithographie #RuthAsawa #cooperhewitt Ruth Asawa was born on this day in 1926.⠀ ⠀ Asawa was born in California, the daughter of Japanese immigrants, and spent her childhood working on her family’s farm. In 1942, the entire Asawa family were sent to internment camps. During her eighteen-month internment, she began to draw.⠀ ⠀ At age 20, Asawa enrolled in the legendary Black Mountain College, an experimental school where she studied with Josef Albers, Merce Cunningham, and Buckminster Fuller. ⠀ ⠀ Best known for her intricate wire sculptures, Asawa also created lithographs. In the 1960s, during her fellowship at the famed Tamarind Lithography Workshop founded by June Wayne, she printed this lithograph, titled Chair. The fine lines and exploration of patterns echo the forms of Asawa’s wire sculptures. ⠀ ⠀ #RuthAsawa #LIthograph #Design https://www.instagram.com/p/B7u_r6Tq7vK/?igshid=n0hyejbfpyj6
