I just finished rewatching season 1 of Ascendance of a Bookworm, and it really hit me just how good the pacing and panelling is. I mean, I was already painfully aware of how messed up season 3 was, but this made it even clearer. Season 3 may have much better animation, but season 1 and 2, with their very rough animations, are still much better. It seems that even when it comes to anime, storytelling is what makes a story good, it doesn’t matter how good the animation is if they can’t effectively use it to tell the story they want to tell. Ultimately, by aiming for perfection, they made it so hard for themselves that they lost sight of what’s important and their love for the story itself was smothered by exhaustion.

As an author who often struggles with perfection and has burned myself out from it, I think this is a really good lesson to learn. And really hope they have, so that if we get a season 4, it can live up to the amazingness of season 1 & 2 as well as the story.
