Late blanket update: it has been hemstitched and is Off The Loom!
I got super sick and missed my Christmas deadline but that's been adjusted for and all is well. And it's HUGE! (skein of Cascade 220 for scale)
My fears of it being too small were unfounded, I guess 😂

THE TWILLING SAGA COMES TO A CONCLUSION
After spinning the rest of the yarn, I wove as far as the warp would let me. Minus unavoidable loom waste and the odd scraps from spinning, this is ALL of the remaining wool. I was playing yarn chicken hard:

Tomorrow I shall begin the process of sewing! Then, the book report where I pull together everything.
If you're in Calontir, come and say hi at Queen's Prize next weekend!

I don't know why, but it's so funny to me that most people who post their weaving have the same kind of angles to their video, and most of them, if not all of them, hide the chaos that's going on at the back of the loom. It's the same idea as "never ask a fiber artist to see the back of their project" with the embroiderers, or really any other craft where ends have to be managed. I know I'm guilty of it too; let's be honest, there's nothing glamorous about looking at the tangle of... 'creative' solutions to my ongoing tension struggles. But hey, for anyone curious, here's a peak behind the curtain on my latest project!
Here's some pictures too, to make it easier to see the chaos.

It's one of those things that I think is important to remember; behind every work of art is a not-so-glamorous process that you REALLY just have to trust. Everything seems so perfect when you see it online (at least in a crafting context), but it's important to know that it doesn't have to be. You can have things go wrong and still end up with an amazing product. You can have the weirdest solution to a problem, but if it works it works!
Never be afraid to mess up and work through it, even if "working through it" is messy in its own way! That's all part of the fun, friends! Trust the process, things will work out!

I made this for my Dad. It's starting to get cold here and he struggles with mobility - the poncho is perfect as he doesn't need to worry about trying to get his arms in pesky holes. It can just be lifted on and off for him :)

Another small weaving piece. M. Brassard 8/2 cotton yarn, following pattern #27 from A Weaver's Book of 8-Shaft Patterns with a sett of 20 EPI. The warp is 20 ends of Dark Olive (Olive foncé), 80 ends of Green Emerald (Vert émeraude, not to be confused with Émeraude), and then another 20 of the Dark Olive. The weft is entirely Dark Olive.
Although not obvious from the picture, I neglected to add floating selvedges, and ended up regretting it.
The whole thing is about 6" by 2' long, i.e. my standard length for test pieces. I'm thinking of doing a larger, wider version as a table runner, but I wanted to make sure that the result would come out the way I wanted. The thing that I think would improve it would be something to help the lighter colour stand out more. A different colour, or a more lustrous yarn?
I wound the warp about a month ago, and then just stalled for ages before getting it onto the loom. Threading, sleying, etc. went quickly after that, and I managed to weave 6" that same evening. Once I got to used to weaving the pattern, I was averaging a pick every 7-8 seconds, which is about two feet per hour.
It was nice getting something done again: most of my weaving this year has been a series of failed experiments working with silk. This one actually turned out how I wanted, and was faster to weave, too!
I'm not sure yet what I want to weave next. Perhaps an experiment with a painted warp?
