Thoughts on Halloween Display

The full-out display stuff went up the day before I wrote this, and if I don’t at least analyze the pieces the constant background noise and movement will drive me nuts.

(I know, short trip.)

Lawn decorations are noisy. Yes, there are several that are just prop-up and inflatable, not a problem if you don’t have to look that direction. But many of them move and make noise, evidently to spook the kids, the neighbors, and any wandering cats.

(The neighborhood squirrels will likely not be fazed, and in fact bury acorns in the wirework.)

A single spooky voice, roar, or malevolent cackle can be tuned out. Eventually. The problem comes when you have five or more different ones all going off randomly, sometimes spiced up by the terrified and angry wails of kids who didn’t want to be in a hardware store to begin with.

One dragon, however, is interesting.

It’s silent. The core of it is likely an inflatable lawn decoration. The blower may or may or may not be involved with the “fire breathing”; more on that later. Besides the blower it has mechanical wings that “beat”, even bending and straightening a bit, and lights for the eyes and the “fire”.

I appreciate the design of the “fire breath”. Translucent tongues of what may be an orange-red fabric, attached to the red-lit mouth, blowing out and down. It’s about as close as you can get to a blowtorch appearance without heat involved. The light’s the same bright red-orange as those of the eyes, a good choice; more red than the orange mane and tail-frill. Black wing membranes, also fine; although given how countershading works on predatory creatures in nature I am grumpy about the underside being black. It might be necessary to be opaque to disguise internal machinery, but the rest of the dragon has color!

...Though that is the aspect I’d change first if I were redesigning this dragon to be more awesome. The version on sale has a body colored dappled yellow-green. Meh. First, chartreuse really doesn’t do anything for me. Second, even at the end of October, we’ll have a lot of stuff still in-leaf, and it’ll be about that same yellow-green. The dragon will not stand out and impress. Third... it really doesn’t go with the orange-red elements. Between that and the black, the color combo is not attractive. And I have this thing where I think dragons should be majestic, not ugly. Even the most evil dragon should be awesome!

So I’d fix the color. Blue would be good; the right dark blue would go with the black and make the orange pop. Metallic copper, brown, or bronze would also work. Gray or black could be striking. If you had to keep it simple, just a dark, non-dappled green.

Two more months of haunted décor, sigh....

This next necklace was designed to wear alone or with a layer of other necklaces. An old watch face, vintage buttons, keshi pearls, rhinestone earrings, brass stampings, silk ribbon and even an old dog tag were used to create this sentimental bracelet. I found the antique monogrammed locket at my favorite antiquing stomping grounds in PA, just like the button. The antique button was used as an off-center focal.įor this next assemblage-style bracelet, I gathered up all sorts of vintage bits and baubles that I had been collecting. For this necklace, I stitched a few favorite mother of pearl buttons on to brass stampings and used brass wire to connect the button links together. I held on to it, waiting to make something special. The button stood out with its beautiful cut steel, brass, and mother of pearl details. It was just sitting there on a table mixed with all sorts of stuff. Last year, I found this amazing antique button. Shown here in sterling, brass, and a copper and sterling wire mix. In this wire-wrapped bangle, I challenged myself to take a link from my book, The Missing Link, and turn it into a bracelet! The entire bangle base is one length of wire, and 3 gauges of wire were used. I’m hoping to find more stones like this when I ever get to a bead show again.
