Researchers have found evidence of a potential link between patterns of changes in a key pregnancy hormone called placental corticotropin-releasing hormone and symptoms of postpartum depression. The findings, published in Psychoneuroendocrinology, add to a growing body of research on physiological risk factors during pregnancy tied to adverse postpartum outcomes. “One in 5 women report experiencing elevated depressive symptoms within the year after giving birth,” says lead author Isabel F. Almeida, assistant professor of Chicano/Latino studies and director of the Latina Perinatal Health Lab at the University of California, Irvine.

Adrenal androgens – The adrenal glands are a prominent source of androgens. In fact, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and DHEA sulfate (DHEAS) are the most abundant products of the adrenal glands. The major determinant of their production is corticotropin (ACTH). Less than 10 percent of DHEA and DHEAS are produced by the testes or ovaries.
DHEA and DHEAS have little, if any, intrinsic androgenic activity. However, small amounts are converted to androstenedione and then to testosterone (and to estrogen) in both the adrenal glands and peripheral tissues, including hair follicles, sebaceous glands, the prostate, external genitalia, and adipose tissue. Thus, while excess secretion of DHEA and DHEAS defines adrenal hyperandrogenism, the hirsutism and virilization are, in fact, caused by the more potent androgens androstenedione and testosterone.

How can your physical health be impacted by stress?
Stress eats you alive. Or at least, that's how it feels, right?
I've been having a tough couple of weeks. My medications changed, life got busy, and suddenly it felt like I was fighting for my life to keep my head above water when everyone else was calmly floating along.
This led me to wonder: to what extent does stress impact the body? There's obviously the idea of hair going grey early, but how much further does it go?
Studies have shown that both short and long term stress can worsen connections in the brain related to memory. If you have ever been so stressed over something that you start to do worse in school, you can probably attest to this on a personal level. One study from UC Irvine showed that with short term stress, hormones called corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) activate and disrupted the dendritic spines where synapeses are. Synapses transmit information from one neuron to another, so they are extremely important.
In mouse/rat experiments with the same team, they found that by blocking CRH from interating with their receptor molecules, they can prevent stress damage to the dendritic spines. Future medicines or therapies could possibly use that information to help patients with ADHD, PTSD, or other situations where stress negatively impacts memories.
A study from the INRS found that long term work related stress, like a job that puts one in danger, had links to lung, colon, rectal,and stomach cancer, as well as Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
If constant pressure can degrade our body to such a degree, we should make more efforts to support those who are struggling. I look around everyday and I see people casually talking about killing themselves and giving up entirely out of stress and exhaustion. I constantly hear: - 'If I skip a day for mental health, I'll have to spend so much time making up work I'll be even more stressed.' -'It's like one awful, stressful thing is over and 15 more pop up with no room to breathe.'-'I'm holding on by a thread, but if I take a break I'll want to die even more...' This mental health crisis, especially among teens, speaks to the lack of support most feel they have in regards to their mental health. More safety nets need to exist so that a few bad days in a row don't build into something that is so stressful to get out of, ending it all or giving up entirely is preferable.

The dendrites we've been talking about come from the greek word "déndron", which literally means tree, since the dendrites look like treee roots in the way they sprawl out.

Dionysus, the greek god of wine, theatre, fertility, and madness has many epithets. One that caught my attention was "Dendrites", meaning he of the trees, alluding to his fertility associations.
Though obviously they come from the same root word and that's really the extent of the connection, I think its interesting that unintentionally, a god who has all these connections to the mind and madness in this way, has a direct connection to the science of the brain. Maybe a bit silly of a connection, but I think it's fun!

More than 3.3 million people worldwide are victims of sex trafficking, and women make up the majority of these victims, making it a serious problem. There are apparently more than a million kids among them. Due to the illicit nature of the activity, detailed data collection is difficult, which results in low data quality.

Factors affecting Mental Health of Human Trafficking Victims:
Biological factors: Sex trafficking victims, especially young ones, experience severe psychological stress as a result of sexual exploitation, which causes noticeable changes in the neurochemical and structural makeup of the brain. 
Extreme stress may alter the gene activity in the hypothalamus and other regions of the brain. The synthesis of important stress-related hormones such pro-opiomelanocortin, corticotropin-releasing hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, and cortisol may be altered as a result.
Other neuromodulator systems that are affected include those for growth hormone, norepinephrine, GABA, opioids, and 5-HT.  
Genetic factors: Numerous sex trafficking victims come from families where there are high rates of drug abuse, alcoholism, schizophrenia, depression, and schizophrenia.

Stress increases Alzheimers risk in female mice but not males
Stress may be one such reason. A study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that the effect stress has on the brain differs by sex, at least in mice. In stressful situations, levels of the Alzheimer’s protein amyloid beta rises sharply in the brains of females but not males. In addition, the researchers identified a molecular pathway that is active in brain cells from female mice but not male mice, and showed that it accounts for the divergent responses to stress. The findings, published May 2 in Brain, add to a growing collection of evidence that sex matters in health and disease. From cancer to heart disease to arthritis, scientists have found differences between males and females that could potentially affect how men and women respond to efforts to prevent or treat chronic diseases. “How women respond to stress versus how men respond to stress is an important area of research that has implications for not just Alzheimer’s disease but other conditions, too,” said co-corresponding author Carla M. Yuede, PhD, an associate professor of psychiatry. “In recent years, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has prioritized understanding sex differences in medicine. Stress is one area in which you can clearly see a difference between males and females. This study shows that reducing stress may be more beneficial for women than men, in terms of lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.” Stress falls into the category of socioeconomic risk factors, along with factors such as depression and social isolation, that together account for an estimated 8% of the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. That risk calculation, however, doesn’t take gender into account. Women consistently report higher levels of stress than men, and stress affects women’s bodies differently than men’s in many ways, such as cardiovascular health, immune responses and other issues. Corresponding author John Cirrito, PhD, an associate professor of neurology; Yuede; and first author Hannah Edwards, a graduate student in Cirrito’s lab, reasoned that stress also may affect women’s brains differently than men’s, and these differences may help explain the sex imbalance in Alzheimer’s disease. To find out, they measured levels of amyloid beta — a key Alzheimer’s protein — in the brains of mice every hour for 22 hours, beginning eight hours before the mice experienced stress. The experience was equally stressful for male and female mice, as measured by the levels of stress hormones in their blood. But the responses in their brains were not the same. In female mice, amyloid beta levels rose significantly within the first two hours and stayed elevated through the end of the monitoring period. In male mice, brain amyloid levels did not change overall, although about 20% of them did show a delayed and weak rise in amyloid levels. Further experiments revealed that the difference comes down to a cellular stress response pathway in brain cells. Stress causes the release of a hormone known as corticotropin releasing factor. Neurons from female rodents take up the stress hormone, triggering a cascade of events that results in increasing levels of amyloid beta in the brain. In contrast, neurons from male rodents lack the ability to take up the stress hormone. It is not known whether there are similar sex differences in how human neurons take up stress hormones. “There’s a fundamental biological difference between males and females in how they respond to stress at the cellular level, in both mice and people,” Cirrito said. “We don’t think that stress is the sole factor driving the sex difference in Alzheimer’s disease. There are many other differences between men and women — in hormones, lifestyle, other diseases they have — that undoubtedly contribute in some way. But that stress is driving one aspect of this sex difference I think is very likely.”

แต่สิวไม่มีหัวนี้ เกิดจากการที่ การอุดตันมีการรั่วไหลเข้าสู่ชั้นลึกของผิวหนัง แทนที่จะออกมาด้านบน บางครั้งมีการสร้างเป็นถุงซีสอยู่ใต้ผิวหนัง จนกลายมาเป็นสิวแดงๆไม่มีหัว แบบที่หลายๆคนเคยเห็นกันนั่นเอง Pilosebaceous unit คือ ชื่อที่เรียกรวมระหว่างรูขุมขน(Follicle) และต่อมไขมัน(Sebaceous gland) นอกจากสาเหตุที่กล่าวไว้ในข้างต้นนี้ ยังมีปัจจัยอื่นๆอีกมากมาย ที่สามารถทำให้เกิดสิวไม่มีหัวได้ ดังนี้
1. พันธุกรรม เมื่อพบว่า มีประวัติของสมาชิกภายในครอบครัวเคยเป็นสิว แนะนำเพื่อน igoal ก็มีโอกาสที่บุคคลน���้นจะเป็นสิวด้วยเช่นกัน จากการศึกษา มีประมาณ 62.9% – 78% ที่มีสิวเกิดขึ้น ส่วนใหญ่เป็นเพศชาย มักเกิดสิวบริเวณคอ และมีโอกาสที่จะเป็นแผลเป็นด้วย
2. การเปลี่ยนแปลงของระดับฮอร์โมน ยกตัวอย่างเช่น การเกิดสิวลุกลามขึ้นในช่วงรอบประจำเดือน ซึ่งจากการศึกษา มักพบในเพศหญิง วัยผู้ใหญ่ ประมาณ 56% ที่มีอาการสิวลุกลามในช่วงก่อนมีประจำเดือน
3. ประวัติการใช้ยา ยาบางชนิด สามารถเป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้เกิดสิวที่ลุกลามขึ้นแบบ Monomorphous ได้ และบางกรณี มีสาเหตุมาจาก anabolic steroids, corticosteroids, corticotropin, phenytoin, lithium, isoniazid, vitamin B complexes, สารประกอบ halogenated และ ยาเคมีบำบัดบางชนิด
4. การใช้ชีวิตประจำวัน ได้แก่ ความเครียดสะสม มลพิษทางอากาศ การสูบบุหรี่ หรือ การใช้ผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องสำอางต่างๆที่อุดตันผิว เป็นต้น
สิวไม่มีหัวแตกต่างจากสิวอื่นๆอย่างไร?
สิวนูน ไม่มีหัว เป็นสิวที่อยู่ในกลุ่มสิวอักเสบ(inflammatory acne) ซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นสิวตุ่ม นูนแดง (papule) โดยภายในกลุ่มสิวอักเสบ ยังมีสิวรูปแบบอื่นๆ ที่มีความแตกต่างจากสิวอักเสบไม่มีหัว ดังนี้
สิวหัวหนอง (Pustules) : เป็นเม็ดสิวที่มีความอ่อนนุ่มในระดับหนึ่ง มีของเหลวขังอยู่ภายในสิว และสามารถมองเห็นหนองสีขาวอยู่ภายในสิวได้อย่างชัดเจน ขนาดเม็ดสิวอยู่ในระดับเล็กไปจนถึงปานกลาง
สิวหัวช้าง (Nodule) : สิวเม็ดใหญ่ไม่มีหัว มีความแข็งเหมือน สิวเป็นไต นูนเต่ง เมื่อสัมผัสโดนสิว จะให้ความรู้สึกเจ็บปวดอย่างมาก บางกรณีอาจพบว่าสิวมีการรวมตัวอยู่ใกล้ๆกันเป็นแพ ทำให้แผลหายช้า และมีโอกาสที่จะเกิดแผลเป็นได้สูงมากอีกด้วย
สิวซีสต์ (Cyst) : มักเป็นสิวที่มีขนาดใหญ่ มีหนองและเลือดปะปนอยู่ภายใน มีความอ่อนนุ่ม และมีอาการเจ็บปวดด้วย โดยสิวชนิดนี้ เป็นสิวที่มีความรุนแรงมากที่สุด และมีโอกาสที่จะเกิดแผลเป็น แผลก้อนนูน หรือหลุมสิว หลังการรักษาได้
ส่วนกลุ่มสิวไม่อักเสบ(non-inflammatory acne) ที่เป็นสิวอุดตันรูขุมขน สมัครสมาชิก igoal แต่ไม่มีอาการอักเสบอื่นๆ จะมีความแตกต่างจากสิวไม่มีหัวค่อนข้างมาก ดังนี้
สิวหัวดำ (Blackheads) : สิวหัวดำ เป็นสิวหัวเปิดที่มีลักษณะแบนๆเรียบๆ หรือมีสิวโผล่ขึ้นมาบ้างเล็กน้อย ซึ่งจะมีเคราติน(keratin)และลิพิด(lipid) ฝังอยู่ โดยจะมีสีเข้ม เนื่องจากเกิดปฏิกิริยาออกซิเดชั่น(Oxidation) นั่นเอง
สิวหัวขาว (Whiteheads) : สิวหัวขาว เป็นสิวหัวปิดที่มีลักษณะเป็นหัวสีขาว นูนขึ้นเล็กน้อย มักมีขนาดเล็ก และไม่มีรูเปิดของสิวที่สามารถมองเห็นได้อย่างชัดเจน
