Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, Part 1 of a double feature! Like the last episode of The Outer Limits, this episode had too many good shots and too many Trek connections to fit comfortably in one post. Leonard Nimoy guest stars in "I, Robot," episode 9 of the second season of The Outer Limits (original air date Nov 14, 1964).

Nimoy plays a journalist covering the story of a robot on trial, accused of the murder of his creator. The story has elements of a space-age retelling of Frankenstein, as well as the ethical issues surrounding the creation of artificial life that Star Trek has been exploring for nearly sixty years and human society is still wrestling with today. As Nimoy's character says at the end of the episode, “It's not the end of the story. It's just the beginning.”

Other Trek Connections:

In flashbacks, the scientist who built the robot is played by Peter Brocco, who played one of the Organian elders in the Star Trek episode “Errand of Mercy.”

The scientist's niece, who hires an attorney to defend the robot, is played by Marianna Hill, better known to Star Trek fans as the flirtatious Dr. Helen Noel in “Dagger of the Mind.”

Kazutomi Yamamoto (Yumoto's VA):

Everyone! Have you been well?

Already, 10 years have passed since we first yelled, "We are the heirs to the throne of love!" The days we spent with Yumoto, with the Defence Club! The days we conveyed love with the anime, the days we made merry with Nico livestreams, the days we shared the love with events!

Binan Koukou Chikyuu Boueibu...whatever it might be, it's nostalgic.

At this turning point called the 10 year anniversary, a decision has been made to make a movie! There'll be stuff like the Ikaho collab, stuff where I play Yumoto, but speaking of the new movie, I look forward to being able to meet everyone as Yumoto again! Again and again!

Yuichiro Umehara (En's VA):

I am amazed it has been 10 years.

I played this role in the early years of my [voice acting] debut, so I'm very happy to play him again. Chikyuu Boueibu is an unpredictable work, so at the present time, I don't know what kind of story will be depicted. However, I am looking forward to it.

I think it'll be a story where we'll certainly laugh and be emotionally moved, but because it is an unpredictable story, at the present time, I don't know what kind of story will be depicted.

Congratulations on Boueibu's 10th anniversary and Binan Koukou Chikyuu Boueibu ETERNAL LOVE! ＼(^o^)／ Boueibu is a work which I have a lot of emotional attachment to and it was a huge launchpad for me. I'm happy to play Io-kun again because this is the first time in a long time I've been able to do so. ( ´∀`) I want to meet them [the LOVE! Defence Club] again soon!!!

Congratulations on the 10 year anniversary and movie!

It's already been 10 years, huh? It's a work where we had this, that and a lot of experiences. If [Boueibu LOVE!] were to be made into a movie, I can't imagine what form it would take. I have high hopes for the fact our paths have successfully crossed again - Ryuu Zaou, who might have been changing in the work, and myself, who was changed by his influence in those days. I wish for this work to be one a lot of people can love, both for those who were cheering them [the LOVE! Defence Club] on in those days and those who've known them for the first time just now.

Well well, after 6 years(?), Binan Koukou Chikyuu Boueibu has been revived.
