Cottagecraft’s 1.19.4 Release

On July 14th, 2023, Cottagecraft began updating to Java Edition v1.19.4!

The word border will be doubled. Any terrain past 10,000 blocks in any direction will be 1.19 generation. The world will remain the same within the original area, so no reset.

We look forward to seeing everyone enjoy the update and create some beautiful new builds!

The update will fully release on July 15th or 16th (depending on how long the new generation takes).

POV/image i.d.: standing in my shower holding a freshly unwrapped soap from @cottage-craft-shop - it is the Yule scent, of green wood and musk, cloves, black currants, and plum. The bar is mostly white, with a section of green speckled with dark green or black at the bottom to represent evergreen boughs, from which rise three candles of differing heights and thickness in a cranberry red, topped with a small artful splotch of gold to represent the candle flame. The sides and bottom of the bar are flat, the top uneven from the curing and dusted with goldenbrown. Visible beyond the in/hand soap is a wet clear shower liner, beyond which is blurring visible a Lost Souls shaw being used as a curtain, and beyond that a blue wall and brown door with white frame. End i.d.

This soap isn’t currently available in their shop, but this black queer shop owner does have a lovely set of vegan soaps inspired by Van Gogh paintings and you can see and buy them here.

What is homesteading?

Context: As of right now, my hyperfixation is homesteading and cottage craft. Over the next few weeks to the next few months, almost all of my posts will be about cooking, crafts, farm work, gardens, animals, and weather. Please, sit down and grab something to drink, because there is going to be a lot to cover! Also, I now have a job, so commissions may take a little longer to get out! So buckle up everyone!

Homesteading is the act of raising a plot of land. This includes cooking (canning, preserving); farming (gardens, weather); livestock (farm animals); and other “country” things. Please be warned that homesteading is not easy, as there are many factors that go into it all at once. Here, I will take everyone on my journey of homesteading and answer questions along the way. We are all learning here. “Ultimately, the broadest definition is that it is a lifestyle with a commitment to self-sufficiency. This can encompass growing and preserving food; providing your own electricity with solar, wind or water; and even making your own fabric and clothing. Some homesteaders aspire never to use money; they want to make things or barter for everything they need. You may be thinking, “why would I want to do this? What is the point?” You might want to start homesteading to save money, or you might want to just learn a few new things to help yourself. Many homesteaders don't share the same reasons for turning to this lifestyle. Situations may vary, but it doesn’t make anyone less of a homesteader if they spend money or if they don’t enjoy raising livestock. Everyone is different!

Now, how does cottage magic work its way into this? Easy! You can put magic into anything you do, from cooking to crafts! It is an easy way to stay in touch with both your land and your practice! Don’t worry, there is more than just cottage magic that comes into play in homesteading, as you will soon find out!

Fast Fashion to Slow Fashion :: a DIY guide to up-cycling and mending clothing on a budget.

For those of us living on a small income, buying from sustainable fashion brands is often out of reach. I would like to point out that *buying new but ecological garments isn't the only way to cultivate a slow fashion wardrobe*. Here are a few options for transforming *upcycling* your clothing, thus making fast fashion into slow fashion:

Mend and repair :: patch hand-me-down sweaters, fix holes in leggins from target and other department stores. By giving items a longer life, and preventing unnecessary garbage, fast fashion items become slow fashion! Here are two tutorials I have written on how to mend a torn belt loop on jeans and patch leggings.

Up-cycle clothing that doesn't suit your style :: when preparing for a trip back home and wondering how to acquire some nicer clothing for the trip a friend of mine gifted me a big bag of clothes. Almost all of them were items that we could call "fast fashion" and nearly all also had stains or rips that needed mending. By fixing and adapting these items and then going on to wear them for several years longer, I am keeping them out of the cycle of buy then trash.

Tailor items that don't fit you :: Taking in clothing is quite simple and there are lots of tutorials on how to hem pants and skirts or take in a size or two. I recently made a tutorial on how to take out a skirt, or make a skirt bigger by adding panels.

At some point, we must face the fact that a t-shirt is totally worn out and cannot be used for clothing any longer. In such cases here are a couple of crafts to utilize the fabric and other items from the scrap pile:

Create a Quilt :: if you find yourself with a pile of beautiful & memory-filled scraps -- transform them into a quilt as I have done in this post.

Make Twine :: Longer scraps of fabric, especially those from stretch materials like leggings or jersey cotton t-shirts can be made into a thing rope also known as fabric twine. I wrote a tutorial on how to make twine out of fabric scraps.
