The Other Side of the ‘80s: Country Underthings, McCalls 8306
While the 1980s were known for the rise--literally--of giant hair and giant shoulder pads in women’s clothing, there was an alternative in Laura Ashley. A real person born in 1925, she would live until 1985 making a succession of vintage-inspired styles. She made frilly dresses with high necks and puffed sleeves in the 1970s, in small floral prints based on patterns that dated back a century or more, for women who did not go for the more louche look of the jersey wrapped dress by Diane von Furstenberg. Then, the company created what I call “country undies” although they were worn as outer wear. This one is re-issued in modern sizes.
So, you see here a kind of tiered petticoat worn by itself or as a petticoat with elastic waist. This is paired with a top that would have been a corset cover in an earlier era trimmed with tucks and lace insertions, shaped with a peplum and then a ribbon at the waistline. They suggest cottons and cotton blends, including lightweight denim, and challis. The latter would debulk the silhouette considerably. It manages to be both demure and suggestive at the same time which tells you that the 1970s shifted the standards for outerwear even for a design company known for its more traditional styles.

Merwin's Shrimp Gumbo This is a recipe for a classic, dark brown, shrimp gumbo in true Louisiana Cajun country fashion. Serve over rice. Browning the chicken pieces in the oil used for the roux adds flavor to the dish. I use the cooked chicken for chicken salad. File is added off the heat to thicken the gumbo. If added while the gumbo is still cooking, it may become stringy and unpleasant. File is ground sassafras leaves. It is available in many supermarkets.
