When I tell you @kreations_by_keith came through today with breakfast lunch and dinner ALL on ONE plate. 🤤 I ordered the Seafood Platter with 2 pieces of salmon, 6 crabballs (3 extra cause I'm greedy) sautéed shrimp and seasoned string beans and candy carrots (that taste better than yams). I was ONLY able to finish a 1/3 of my lunch and I'm stuffed. after re-watching the original series episodes of ben 10 with ghostfreak in them, it’s like, really interesting? to see how more apparent he becomes? like, going into the show and watching it for the first time, you’re not going to be paying close attention to ben’s behavior as ghostfreak. 

why would you? you have no reason to suspect anything

but i know what happens because i’ve seen the show before. i know that ghostfreak isn’t like the other aliens in the watch-- he survived, wholly, as a personality and autonomous being... one that only grows stronger as time goes on

his first appearance is in episode 4 of the first season, “permanent retirement.” in this episode ben, gwen and max visit their aunt vera’s house and it’s about as fun as you might expect for a 10-year-old boy. ben transforms into ghostfreak so he can get out of his stuffy old great aunt’s house and go have some fun somewhere else

ghostfreak himself is quiet in this episode. ben as ghostfreak is basically indistinguishable from his normal, albeit silly human self. but that’s just the thing-- it’s important to note that this is ghostfreak’s very first appearance because, presumably, before now, he had never been awakened since getting stuck in the watch

the second time ghostfreak shows up is in the next episode, “hunted,” in which 3 bounty hunters are after the omnitrix at the request of vilgax. ben originally goes ghost (haha, get it?) so he can play a prank on gwen. that’s innocent enough. and it is-- it’s not like he hurts her or anything, he just startles her in an almost comically stereotypical and ghost-like fashion

the interesting part is what happens next

one of the bounty hunters, the crab mecha, finds ben and gwen and attacks them. ben grabs gwen and pulls her away from where crabface pops out of the ground, which is nothing to bat an eyelash about. but after crabby demands for ben to hand over the omnitrix, he says: “you have no idea who you’re messing with.” 

mr crabfuck gives a snarky retort, and then ben-ghostfreak says, in that same scary attitude, “oh, yeah? do you know this trick? now you see me... now you don’t.” 

he leaves gwen without a shield or weapon directly in front of crabballs mcgee. if the bounty hunter had wanted to attack her, he could have killed her in a second. lucky for her he didn’t.

some fighting happens, and then the watch times out. ben is back to his regular human self, but he looks kind of haunted. “ugh,” he says, “that was even weirder than when i normally go ghostfreak!” 

(which is to say, that between episodes 4 and 5, there were probably some alien shenanigans we didn’t get to see in which ghostfreak got a little more use, more exposure, and more time to wake up)

his next appearance (“kevin 11″) is largely unimportant, but the one after that is his appearance in “last laugh,” in which he scares zombozo to death

and after that, he has 2 more short and therefore unimportant appearances before the big episode hits: “ghostfreaked out.” by then, ghostfreak himself has gotten enough power to fully possess (or would it be suppress?) ben while fighting the circus freaks

and holy shit, is that ever not ben.

i remember being stunned the first time i saw that episode-- the fact that ghostfreak was actually zs’skayr was a total plot twist for me! and a good one, too. but now that i’ve seen these episodes again, it’s obvious that this arc was a long time coming. it’s just subtle enough that if you’re not paying attention, you’ll miss it, but if you know what to look for, it’s obvious

now i just wonder why he like, chose to jump ship completely? like, ghostfreak had a good thing going there, because ben had not even chosen him to fight the circus freaks (if memory serves, it was supposed to be heatblast who came out of the omnitrix for that battle)

so not only did zs’skayr have enough power to force his way to the front, but he was also able to quiet ben completely, to the point where he says, in response to gwen being disgusted at how cruel and reckless 'ben’ is being in the fight:

“ben’s not here.”
