Priceless PR

Public relations is great way to get people to discover you and your business, if you approach it in the right way. Here are a few things to keep in mind before “pitching your story.”

Public relations is not advertising

A reporter is not going to jump at the chance to write about your company. A reporter needs news, not a sales piece.

A Better Approach: Focus on demonstrating your expertise, how you support the local community, are taking a different approach, and not just talking about yourself.

PR people aren’t in control of what news gets printed

A journalist is interested in writing a story that impacts or engages local readers. Realize that you or your PR person has little control over the final story.

A Better Approach: Volunteer to fact check anything a reporter writes. Be sure to provide additional supporting materials with your release including pictures, testimonials with contact information, and other more detailed descriptions that make the reporter’s job easier.

Public Relations requires a strategy

Public relations is based on facts. In order to grab a reporters interest, build in key facts, develop your press release highlighting the key facts that shows your thought-leadership, local commitment, or unique approach to the market. Your strategy is how to gain a reporters interest, have a local angle and highlight something that is new or of interest to a large group of readers.

A Better Approach: Start with the facts, then build your strategy. Your strategy needs to keep in mind how to gain a reporters interest, what is your local angle, and how can you highlight something that is new or of interest to a large group of readers.

Public Relations is not the only way to get people talking about you

There are many ways to get your story told, keep in mind, public relations is just one avenue. Other ways to tell your story include:

Get your fans to blog about you or post favorable reviews

Blog about your accomplishments or thought-leadership

Join forces with a local charity or other local businesses to reach a new audience

Participate in an event and share your story with anyone who comes to your table

When approaching public relations, keep in mind don’t sell, tell a story or share information that people want to hear. Taking this approach attracts more people to your company and positions you as a leader in your market.
