the way people talk about the catholic church is like being in an auditorium with a nightmarish shifting mass of tentacles spanning the entire room. teeth sunk into your friends, gaping maws and pincers reaching for others, slowly strangling a third of the assembled audience, but with most in attendance not particularly bothered by this

you keep asking to confirm they can see it, that you both are seeing all of this, that they can see the teeth and tendrils and sheer size of it. they downplay whatever detail you bring up, or confirm it's there but shrug

“the tentacles? yeah true, the tentacles did swallow the fire exit, you're not wrong”

“oh yeah, I hated when it ate Brendan. look, nobody was more upset about it eating Brendan than I was”

“mhmmm I don't know about pincers. I think we all have problems with pincers and being pinched in one way or another. it's actually relaxing the pincers lately, most people only have the pincers loosely around their throat. if you were serious about this, you would be happy about its movements pincer-wise”

“wait, you're still going on about the teeth sunk into Marie? that's because the jaw is right there, of course the teeth are going to be puncturing her. do you really expect the jaws to be where they are, unfortunately where she was sitting, and the teeth to not be puncturing through her? that doesn't seem very fair of you”

thinking about franziska and her whip, like, it’s obviously her desperate attempt to attain respect in a realm of people who will only belittle her for being a young woman, and the thing is like, it is a gambit that, to some extent, works. in aa2 she is regarded as very fearsome and strong. but the thing is that like it is a performance and it ultimately only works on people who buy into it…it’s an illusion of power that she can only wield over people who are willing to cast themselves as having less power than her (gumshoe, phoenix, etc.)—which is particularly interesting to examine in young franziska of aai. she would never, for example, try to whip von karma, despite his respect being what she ultimately wants the most at that time. there’s also the moment where she whips detective badd, and he gets very angry, and miles has to tell her to apologize—and she looks frightens, she’s confronted with just how flimsy her position is despite her bravado. buttt this leads us back to miles. because he certainly does not consider himself lesser than franziska in any sense. and yet she whips him incredibly often as they interact. he snarks about it, but he ultimately lets it happen. because he understands how important that illusion of power is to her—he doesn’t view them as competitors the same way she does. he agrees to the competition because he knows it will make her happy. he’s protecting her by letting her feel like she has power over him, because he understands just how little power she truly does have and how the family name weighs on her. and this can also tie back to him giving her the whip back at the end of aa2. the illusion has been shattered, and this leaves her feeling utterly powerless. but the whip isn’t just a symbol of how she lacked power, but also of how hard she fought anyways. it’s like he tells her, to “think deeply...about what [she] should be striking down with that whip.” she’s not a scared little girl trying to impress her father and her colleagues anymore. she’s lost, but miles is telling her that she has the strength to find the answers she needed. that she had always been strong, she was just handed shitty circumstances, but now she’s an adult and she can take back her narrative. she’s franziska von karma. and she’s not going to walk in his shadow forever. and he doesn’t want her to either!!!!

let's all think about roman literally on his knees at gerri’s feet, begging to be saved. but you can’t be saved from Logan, that’s the whole point, he is a planet of a person he’s a black hole he is every decision already made. gerri tries to get him to see this — there’s no way out, no move they could possibly make against him, because Logan. always. wins. maybe if roman could give her one reason to fight for him, but there aren’t any. it’s pointless. it has nothing to do with roman, really, and everything to do with the harsh reality that Logan is the center of their universe. but all that nuance is completely lost on roman, because in that room he is seven years old again and always. and when she asks how it serves her interests, what she is saying is show me a way out, but what he hears is that she doesn't care about him. and maybe she never did.

what deep-seated ugly thing twinges inside him when he realizes that john was his (self-perceived) responsibility for the same amount of time that john and mary were together. he knows it's not the same, but he can't help but feel some kind of way about it on top of feeling all sorts of other complicated emotions about his mom.
