Fact: Spike is a middle-aged construction worker and Mario’s “original rival” from his time as a building demolition worker on the Wrecking Crew.
Spike worked with Bowser to get vengeance on Mario in Wrecking Crew '98 and returned to play golf with Mario in Mobile Golf.

A Fuzzy once again, but this time more with my own take, and in the M&L style because I’ve been enjoying learning it. For my take on him, I chose to make a bit of a composite of all of his past designs, because honestly they were all good in their own way and there’s a little I liked from each. I prefer a pointier look and a bigger build like the golfing goon and movie guido, but I like the sneaky shades of the classic, and the newer lad’s outfit, because you’ll never take the Fix it Felix look from me now. The brown gloves were my own choice, because with that outfit, the classic white gloves don’t suit it at all, and also it’s a nice contrast to the Bros.
Speaking of classic, boredom led to me checking out Wrecking Crew, and I was NOT expecting puzzles, for some reason? I hated it, but I also loved it, and after so many hours and cheating with the rewind later, I get it now...I get you, Mario. Regardless of his crimes against humanity, I wanna see him make a comeback, the way they dusted off Pauline. I’d say I didn’t realize how much I enjoy the older stuff, but I was and still am OBSESSED with Donkey Kong 94, and Wrecking Crew felt like that game’s predecessor, so despite how ANGRY some of the bs puzzles made me, it gave me that same joy that DK94 does.
Anyway, I digress. I’m not sure how I did, I look at my design and I feel like I just made a completely different character... Idk, maybe it works, let me know, but either way I’M happy with it and that’s what matters in the end I suppose~ :)c

Foreman Spike in Wrecking Crew 98 has some pretty meta dialogue acknowledging his status as Wario's precursor, calling himself Mario's original rival.

Wrecking Crew
My take on Foreman Spike and the Eggplant. Spike's design takes some old colors and combines it with features from the Mario Movie design.

Of course I'd injure my foot in a walk in block and in a piece of land towards the back. I had to hobble so very far, using my spade as a crutch, past the whooole crew to get back to the bus. Our camp manager spotted me and gave me a ride back to camp so I didn't have to sit on the bus for another few hours waiting for the work day to finish, bless. He's usually more blasé about injuries/sickness/poor weather conditions than the crew bosses, but I guess I looked really pathetic.
When I was sitting at the cache immediately post foot-destruction almost crying, my crew boss told me "If it helps, [other crew boss] shit himself this morning and we're all making fun of him on the radio". It did help.

Wrecking Crew is one of the many jobs Mario and Luigi took on to try and supplement their income when they started their plumbing business and it was unsuccessful. (They were only able to become SOLELY plumbers after Mario saved Pauline and got really famous. Good publicity to bring in customers.)
Spike did not like the brothers, and challenged them to a sort of “wrecking competition” where their jobs were on the line (he was so confident that he wanted to take them both on at once).
They won the competition, but Mario was so pissed that he went “You know what, we quit anyway!” before Luigi could remind him that they really needed this job. (They had a very angry argument about it later.)
