AAPI Heritage Month: Cookbooks to Check Out
The Honeysuckle Cookbook: 100 Healthy, Feel-Good Recipes to Live Deliciously by Dzung Lewis
The Honeysuckle Cookbook is stuffed with exciting ideas for easy, approachable, Asian-influenced cooking at home. With 100 recipes, from the breakfast favorites that consistently rate the highest in views on the author's popular YouTube channel (like her Overnight Oats, 6 Ways) to original twists on one-pan and pressure-cooker meals, this book is for those of us who want feel-good meals made healthy, delicious, and quick. Dzung's recipes take the familiar and turns it ever-so-slightly on its head: Marinara sauce gets extra umami with the addition of fish sauce, while mac and cheese becomes more than an out-of-the-box staple when made fresh with kimchi. Lattes get an extra kick from bold Vietnamese coffee and sweet, floral lavender, and quinoa pilaf is mixed with a creamy curry-miso dressing. Dzung also teaches readers how to stretch groceries so they spend a little less money, how to plan meals seasonally, and how to match main courses with sides so plates look impressive and taste great. With quick snack ideas, recipe hacks, foolproof instructions, and genius tips for pretty presentation, The Honeysuckle Cookbook will be the friendly hand busy young cooks need to hold in the kitchen.
Cook Real Hawai'i: A Cookbook by Sheldon Simeon, Garrett Snyder
The story of Hawaiian cooking, by a two-time Top Chef finalist and Fan Favorite, through 100 recipes that embody the beautiful cross-cultural exchange of the islands. Even when he was winning accolades and adulation for his cooking, two-time Top Chef finalist Sheldon Simeon decided to drop what he thought he was supposed to cook as a chef. He dedicated himself instead to the local Hawai‘i food that feeds his ‘ohana—his family and neighbors. With uncomplicated, flavor-forward recipes, he shows us the many cultures that have come to create the cuisine of his beloved home: the native Hawaiian traditions, Japanese influences, Chinese cooking techniques, and dynamic Korean, Portuguese, and Filipino flavors that are closest to his heart. Through stunning photography, poignant stories, and dishes like wok-fried poke, pork dumplings made with biscuit dough, crispy cauliflower katsu, and charred huli-huli chicken slicked with a sweet-savory butter glaze, Cook Real Hawai‘i will bring a true taste of the cookouts, homes, and iconic mom and pop shops of Hawai‘i into your kitchen.
Filipinx: Heritage Recipes from the Diaspora by Angela Dimayuga, Ligaya Mishan, Alex Lau (Photographs)
Filipinx offers 100 deeply personal recipes—many of them dishes that define home for Angela Dimayuga and the more than four million people of Filipino descent in the United States. The book tells the story of how Dimayuga grew up in an immigrant family in northern California, trained in restaurant kitchens in New York City—learning to make everything from bistro fare to Asian-American cuisine—then returned to her roots, discovering in her family’s home cooking the same intense attention to detail and technique she’d found in fine dining. In this book, Dimayuga puts a fresh spin on classics: adobo, perhaps the Filipino dish best known outside the Philippines, is traditionally built on a trinity of soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic—all pantry staples—but add coconut milk, vinegar, and oil, and it turns lush and silky; ribeye steaks bring extra richness to bistek, gilded with butter and a bright splash of lemon and orange juice. These are the punches of flavor and inspired recipes that home cooks have been longing for. A modern, welcoming resource for this essential cuisine, Filipinx shares exciting and approachable recipes everyone will wholeheartedly embrace in their own kitchens.
My Shanghai: Recipes and Stories from a City on the Water by Betty Liu
Filled with galleries, museums, and gleaming skyscrapers, Shanghai is a modern metropolis and the world’s largest city proper, the home to twenty-four million inhabitants and host to eight million visitors a year. “China’s crown jewel (Vogue), Shanghai is an up-and-coming food destination, filled with restaurants that specialize in international cuisines, fusion dishes, and chefs on the verge of the next big thing. It is also home to some of the oldest and most flavorful cooking on the planet. Betty Liu, whose family has deep roots in Shanghai and grew up eating homestyle Shanghainese food, provides an enchanting and intimate look at this city and its abundant cuisine. In this sumptuous book, part cookbook, part travelogue, part cultural study, she cuts to the heart of what makes Chinese food Chinese—the people, their stories, and their family traditions. Organized by season, My Shanghai takes us through a year in the Shanghai culinary calendar, with flavorful recipes that go beyond the standard, well-known fare, and stories that illuminate diverse communities and their food rituals. Chinese food is rarely associated with seasonality. Yet as Liu reveals, the way the Shanghainese interact with the seasons is the essence of their cooking: what is on a dinner table is dictated by what is available in the surrounding waters and fields. Live seafood, fresh meat, and ripe vegetables and fruits are used in harmony with spices to create a variety of refined dishes all through the year.

That was NOT a boring answer that was tons of culinary fun the whole way through!! Also u make me blush too!! A whole lot!!
And yea i know abt peanut oil flavor cuz i remember tastin the peanut oil on da friez at five guyz
Also a thought tht crossed my mind last night that i could not get out of my head, what if a rare steak was breaded to whatever extent with fuckin, crushed up ritz bitz cheese crackers?????? I have a very funny palette but i think that might work. And im not just talkin like a skirt steak or anything like a milanesa or like how a country fried steak would be either im talkin bout a regular thick enough cut like rib eye or something thats lightly breaded w them ritz bits i think i might be onto something but what do you think!! Hi wuna!
Hi Koralina! I’m glad that wasn’t a boring response last night also I just slept for like eleven hours straight! I actually don’t know how that would taste, I’ve only had chicken fried steak a couple times and it’s always been at a restaurant so I wouldn’t know what they use to bread it, but then maybe you mean like the way they do katsu or something? Like a steak katsu with ritz cheese crackers ritz crackers instead of panko? I can’t really imagine how that would taste that’s pretty creative! Ritz be good for that because they’re buttery and salty! I’m not sure how that cheese center would react with hot oil, it kind of has the same texture as Oreo cream so it might be a combination of starch and oil with some flavoring and salt in the which case it could either dissolve in the hot oil and burn or get crispy on the steak. Oh but if that were the case then grinding up the cheese and the crackers together might make more of a paste…I’d imagine you’d have to crush the crackers separately and then throw the cheese part in with the wets. And probably to keep it light it would be like one dip in the wet and one dip in the dry? Yeah that might be good! Idk, what do you think?
Additionally that gave me an idea for a savory meat pie where the crust is ritz cheese crackers lol

OJT EATS | Dollars @ Rondo La Cave
Tumblr media
A few months ago, We were at the Chet’s residency at Rondo La Cave (read about that here) and now that is over, they have already moved onto the next residency.  This time it is with chef Andrei Soen, mastermind of Park Bench Deli in Singapore and is called Dollars which we headed down to  go try.
Tumblr media
First thing we ordered were these cheeseburger spring rolls.  These were a nice little starter, beefy, cheesy and with a burger sauce dip.
Tumblr media
Then it was onto this prawn katsu sando.  It was a shame that the bread wasn’t shokupan but that might be being a little picky.  There was a pretty hefty prawn patty with some saurkraut.  This was really tasty with the crunch of the patty sandwiched in the middle of soft white bread.
Tumblr media
For sides, we went for the poutine on the menu.  However, in terms of what i think of when I think of when i think of a Poutine, it wasn’t quite the same.  Firstly, rather than a just a simple gravy, we got a very beefy gravy full of these little chunks of beef (this may be an upgrade on a traditional poutine) but rather than proper cheese curds, we just got some cheese melted on top (definitely a downgrade).  It was still very tasty though.
Tumblr media
This was their fried chicken sandwich.  Fried to crispy perfection yet still really juicy.  The cheese and pickles are classic toppings for a reason and this was just a really good example of an excellent fried chicken sandwich!
Tumblr media
We figured we should have at least a little bit of greenery so we ordered the little gem salad.   It came with pickled cucumbers, onions, chillis and little blobs of ricotta cheese.  It all came together really well with the creaminess of the cheese working together with the pickles.  Just a really nice fresh side.
Tumblr media
Our meal for the night :)
Tumblr media
Another really nice meal at Rondo La Cave.  The fried chicken sandwich was probably the highlight for me.  Rondo La Cave do a very good job of choosing chefs to work with and I look forward to seeing who they will work with next!

Kintaro Sushi Senopati, Jakarta
Sementara menu sushinya, saya memesan beberapa sushi di antaranya, Salmon Nigiri Spider (Rp 35 ribu), Salmon Aburi Yuzu Mayo (Rp 35 ribu), Inari Tuna Mayo Corn (Rp 35 ribu), Chuka Idako Gunkan (Rp 30 ribu).

1 - favorite food?
Tbh I'm such a foodie that I have too many faves! But if I had to pick, fave sweet food is prolly a cronut, I mean a deep fried croissant? You're kidding me. My ideal filling would be one of three: a lemon cream and curd, Nutella and strawberries or peanut butter and jelly. Or just give me a whole chocolate cake (I have a pretty big fantasy of eating a whole cake on my hands and knees LMAO)
In terms of savory food, for snacks I like char siu buns, and meals I think like some kind of pulled BBQ meat with mashed potato's, crispy onions and crispy or creamy-cheesy veg like broccoli/ cauliflower cheese. Or a really good pork tonkatsu or chicken katsu curry (I have way too many faves foods I'm sorry haha) oh and bahn mi!!!!!!! Amazing!!!!!!!
I also love watermelon mint and feta salad that is 👌👌👌👌 on a hot day haha
10 - do I fantasise about instant weight gain?
Ooooooooooo yeah lol, I'm really impatient and before, during and after any stuffings I like to fully measure and weigh my self to see how much I've grown, and then do it again the next day to see how much of it stays on as actual chub! So to just like have some drink where I just get softer immediately yesyesyesyes
I also have a bigggggg thing for button popping so if that happened to me I'd just die of joy 🤣
18 - what's the biggest I could imagine being?
I can't say an exact number bc I know weight looks wayyyyy different on different people, and despite being like over 200lbs (now approx 237) I feel like i don't *look* over 200lbs bc I have a lot of old muscle, but I defo want a LOT more chub than I have now. I kind of want to say like 250-270 but at that point might as well aim for 300............
I know I'd never my mobility to take a hit and ngl when I have more money and get serious about gaining I'd like to do quite a bit of weight lifting on the side and a bit of cardio to not just keep my mobility but also bc being a bear is just 😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰
And also gotta be able to pick up the mutual gainer homies!!!!!!!!!!

DECK. At Queen Kapiolani Hotel
Tumblr media
Tonight's dinner was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. You know I had to get that pre-dinner selfie.
In celebration of my friend's birthday, we had a belated dinner at Deck, which is located on the third floor of the Queen Kapiolani Hotel. I had actually seen this place from a tiktoker who visits local restaurants in Hawai'i and was intrigued.
We arrived around 5:30 PM and were seated right away. The vibes at the restaurant were pretty great, the view was stellar, and the service was awesome. We started with a few drinks, I ordered a strawberry lemon drop with Tito's and my friend got one of their signature cocktails, which was lilikoi flavored.
Tumblr media
As we scanned the menu, there were so many options that sounded so good. Instead of getting our own entrees, we decided to do it pupu style, and share a bunch of small plates. Although I am pretty picky, we settled on five plates. Ahi tacos, glazed chicken wings, burger sliders, barbecue ribs, and shoestring fries. Lets start with the fries...
Tumblr media
Shoe string fries are one of my favorite fry styles. I love how thin and crispy they are, and these fries were perfect. Perfectly salted, perfectly crunchy, 10/10. I also love munching on fries whenever I drink, so it was a great mixture. Next up, wings!
Tumblr media
These glazed wings had a crispy outside and amazing flavor. A good amount of spice and tang, but was evened out with the macadamia nut sauce that was hiding underneath the wings. I avoided the celery, but was so satisfied with these. 10/10. By the way, do you prefer the flats or drums?
Tumblr media
Although my friend ordered the ahi katsu tacos, since I don't eat fish, I decided to be a brave girl and give it a shot. Mistake, I did not like the taste, so fishy, I could barely swallow. She let me know that it was really good and it was just me, so I will have to pass on a rating for these, as to not be bias.
Tumblr media
The burger sliders were pretty ono, with onion, what they called tomato paste (ketchup...?) and melted cheese, it was a pretty basic flavor. I enjoyed it, along with the pickle slice. If you don't like pickles I don't know whats wrong with you. 8/10.
Tumblr media
Our next adventure was the guava barbecue ribs. I'm usually not a fan of ribs, but the guava part got me interested and I had to try. They were cooked pretty well and besides from there not being a lot of meat on the ribs, the flavor was *chefs kiss* For someone who doesn't eat ribs, I would recommend this to first-timers to the restaurant. 9/10.
Tumblr media
Would a birthday dinner be complete without dessert? No, the answer is no. We went with the creme brulee, a somewhat safe but still risky choice. It was sweet and creamy but the fresh fruit helped even the cream flavor out. I would also like to note the size and price of the creme brulee was unbeatable. The two of us couldn't finish it and it was only $10. 8/10.
With the drinks and food the check came out to $123, not bad for a place in Waikiki. Now, in no way am I accurately adding up these scores, so please don't check my math, but I would recommend this place to anyone looking for something new and fun. I enjoyed the atmosphere, at some point there was live music, and the food was enjoyable. I would give Deck a 9/10, and this time I would go again AND pay :)
Bonus: the common area of the hotel, to the side of the restaurant, had a neat wall with portraits of some of Hawai'i's Monarchy and other important figures. Who doesn't love a little history with their dinner?

FORKLORE // Chicken Katsu Sando: fried chicken Maryland, tonkatsu sauce, amazuke cucumber, yuzu and jalapeño slaw, shokupan (aud18); Twice-Baked Pandan croissant (aud8); Nduja, bacon & cheese croissant (aud6) from newly-opened Forklore, City West. Menu on the last two pics. The Chicken Katsu Sando is delicious with crispy batter, juicy chicken meat sandwiched between toasted fluffy Shokupan (Japanese milk bread). Especially love the pairing of the citrusy yuzu slaw that cuts through the greasiness. 😋 The Nduja, bacon and cheese croissant was yummy with its flaky layers. Love the slightly spicy flavour. Twice-baked pandan croissant was a little bit too sweet for my personal preference. Forklore is the second cafe from the owners of Tbsp Bayswater. Love the convenience of its location with plenty of parking - free two hours shaded parking at City West Shopping Centre which houses SciTech, Harvey Norman etc. Glad there’s a cafe here to relax after a science exhibition or furniture/electronics shopping. 😆 Tip: mention their special code “Once Upon A Time” to receive 10% off the bill (until Sunday). Congratulations on your opening, team @forklore.perth 🥳 #forklore #forkloreperth #citywest #westperth #brunch #breakfast #chickenkatsu #sando #yuzu #croissants #pandan #perthbreakfast #perthbrunch #perthfoodreview #PFR_Forklore (at forklore) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKp7OqoDLm4/?igshid=wkmua2pe616r
