Resisting the urge to write a Thomas Barrow x Duke of Crowborough fanfic set after the events of the second movie... because am I the only one who does not want Thomas with Guy Dexter and away from Downton? I won't be happy until Philip apologizes, confesses his undying love for Thomas, and the two of them live happily ever after. I say "resisting" because I have too much on my plate as it is!!!

Found a Downton Abbey ficlet of mine on an old external hard drive. It made me laugh, so I decided to upload it here. Posting it exactly the way I wrote it more than a decade ago. 400 words. Set during season 2, it features banter between Thomas and O'Brien, and appears to be setting up Thomas getting back with the Duke of Crowborough 👀

“I don't care 'ow many times she asks me, I'm not holding that bastard brat of 'ers.”

“You and me both, I never cared much for children.”

“Is that so, O'Brien? You make for a lousy woman.”

“An' you an even worse bloke.”

Thomas' eyes squint in amusement as he releases the smoke from his lungs. He takes another deep drag while thinking of something witty to reply. The only thing that comes out of his mouth, though, is a wild coughing fit. 

“The 'ell's wrong with you?”

“... Nothing,” he finally mutters with watery eyes, not even bothering to look back at her. “Just remembered something.”

O'Brien is left with a half-smoked fag on the ground and the sound of Thomas' boots on the gravel.

His mind is focussed entirely on the oh so familiar figure walking past on the distant pathway that goes around the abbey. Of course he could very well be mistaken. But no, that voice coming through the front doors...

“- just as in my memories. Very fond ones, I must say.”

Leather creaks slightly as his fists clench. His mouth tightens as well. The urge to walk away is overwhelming, but he seems frozen in place. Fixated on the man that looms in front of him. 

Then Mr. Carson notices Thomas. “Ah! Thomas! I do believe you met this gentleman before. The Duke of Crowborough will be gracing us with his stay.”

He tries not to flinch, and succeeds, as the Duke turns around slowly and smiles at him. His expression gives away pleasant surprise and also shows some uncertainty, which in turn puzzles Thomas.

“Hello.”

It almost sounds apologetic. Yet Thomas does not reply, instead he gives him a curt nod and a long glare until he finds the strength to walk past them. 

Miss O'Brien is already in the kitchen, reading the newspaper. She looks up when he enters. 

“You look more cross than usual.”

“It's the Duke. He's back at Downton.”

“Why? Did he get his arms blown off or something?”

“Seemed fine to me. Pity.”

He never really told her why he hated the Duke with such a passion. She probably figured it had to do with his snobbish ways. That was only half of the story though. But he'd rather die than tell her about his humiliation. 

“So what's the plan?”

“... Avoid him.”

“Really, is that all? You disappoint me.”

“Give me time.”

“Don't worry, we'll get him out of 'ere. There's more than one way to boil a slug.”

“...”

Not Meant for You: Chapter 1

Hello everyone, I just posted the first chapter of my new multi-chapter fic “Not Meant for You”. Here’s the summary:

After Thomas meets the Duke of Crowborough on the ship back from America, Philip shows up at the Abbey one day and strikes a business deal with Lord Grantham, effectively securing himself a temporary stay at the Abbey.

…which was a mess in and of itself, but it only threatened to get worse as Jimmy gradually figures out just who Philip is to Thomas.

When the funniest and most intriguing crack pairing bursts into life in your brain but it’s so niche you’re probably the only one who can appreciate it. 🥺

Firstly, it’d help a good deal if you’re a Crowbarrow fan to begin with.💗

Secondly, you’d need to have seen both Kin and Ackley Bridge to fully appreciate why the thought of Michael Kinsella (Charlie Cox) and Martin Evershed (Robert James-Collier) meeting is just sending me right now. 🤣❤️

Martin and Michael seem like such perfect opposites on the surface (one is a frequently surly yet comedic high school teacher and the other is an unexpectedly soft-spoken and sad Irish mobster) that I have a sudden perverse urge to see them forced to interact regularly. 😅 

(But if you haven’t seen both shows, a gif’s worth a 1000 words...)

And how are we getting these two in the same place? 

Anna, Michael’s daughter - whom he loves more than anyone - decides she wants to live with her dad even though he doesn’t have legal custody of her, and never will, thanks to his past. Though he tries to dissuade her, Anna is stubbornly resolved and eventually Michael gives in though it means having to leave his criminal family and Ireland behind to start a life somewhere else. 

They end up in the small Yorkshire mill town of Ackley Bridge, hoping to avoid too much notice since Anna was reported as having been abducted to the Irish authorities. Anna enrolls in the local high school, and, naturally, who should one of her new teachers be but Mr. Martin Evershed? 

Anna begins settling in but Michael is still hyper-vigilant about either of them being recognized, not only because Michael would be arrested for “abducting” Anna but because he knows the Kinsella family have enemies who’d like nothing more than to take Michael out now that he’s alone. He insists on escorting Anna to and from school every day, even though she keeps telling him he needs to chill out because he’s just making himself more conspicuous. 

Her words prove prophetic as one day Martin notices Michael following Anna at a distance and confronts him, thinking he’s a creep. Michael thankfully refrains from pulling a gun on him or just beating the shit out of him, though he’d been solely tempted at first, and explains that he’s Anna’s father - which she confirms and introduces Martin as her teacher. Michael is impressed by his willingness to protect his students and tells him so. The subject of an upcoming school dance is raised and Martin asks if he’s interested in attending, because they’re still short of chaperones. Michael agrees, much to Anna’s consternation. 

As they’re leaving Anna suggests Michael let her give him a bit of a makeover, because he still looks like an Irish mobster and they’re not in Dublin anymore. Michael reluctantly agrees, asking her not to go overboard with it. 

The makeover the night of the school dance:

Nearly seven years ago, my (now) wife and I met on Tumblr in the Thomas Barrow fandom.

When we got married, we cheekily put the Downton Abbey intro music as we left the hall.

Downton Abbey premiere 2022, Em and I got to sit together in person and hold hands as we watched Thomas Barrow ride off into the sunset.

Guess what I’m trying to say, Julian Fellowes, is I forgive you your trespasses.

It has come to my attention that there is a tragic lack of frottage fic in this fandom, so this fest is meant to remedy that! 

According to urbandictionary.com, frottage is:

frot, tribadism, dry humping, or any other no-penetration body grinding done with or without clothes in public or in private

Your fic can be any Thomas pairing and there is no word limit. The only rule is that by the end of the fic, someone has gotten off by rubbing themselves against another person, clothed or unclothed. Simple, right?

the fact that your fic "even" where crowbarrow reunite years later could now pretty feasibly happen from where thomas left off in DA2 ghgjk (yes there's guy but thomas Has Two Hands and guy + philip would work remarkably well for thomas). anyway i Love It.

I didn’t think of that, but you’re right! I’ve thought that it’d be nice for Thomas and Philip to reconnect now that Thomas is older, wiser and more forgiving, and Philip presumably married and solvent (assuming he survived the war, which I expect he did).

I’m seeing lovely friendly visits in California / New York between Thomas and his wife (it Guy) and Philip and his (actual) wife. How fun for his wife and kids to hang out with this famous filmstar, how fun for Thomas to have two men who care for him in his life. 😍
