I love reading books and seeing characters that randomly happen to have a lot in common with blorbos from other media. Like you're telling me the main character here is a bisexual heiress to a powerful empire, whose family lost political capital due to the ambitions of other noble families, ultimately giving a culty group the opportunity to seize power for themselves? And you ally yourself with the children of other noble families to ultimately end up reforming the empire you were set to inherit? That's Edelgard. This is sci-fi Edelgard in space. I love it

Synopsis: A deadly competition for the throne will determine more than just the fate of the empire in this duology opener.
Alyssa Farshot has spent her whole life trying to outrun her family legacy. Her mother sacrificed everything to bring peace to the quadrant, and her uncle has successfully ruled as emperor for decades. But the last thing Alyssa wants is to follow in their footsteps as the next in line for the throne. Why would she choose to be trapped in a palace when she could be having wild adventures exploring a thousand-and-one planets in her own ship?
But when Alyssa’s uncle becomes gravely ill, his dying wish surprises the entire galaxy. Instead of naming her as his successor, he calls for a crownchase, the first in seven centuries. Representatives from each of the empire’s prime families—including Alyssa—are thrown into a race to find the royal seal, which has been hidden somewhere in the empire. The first to find the seal wins the throne.
Alyssa’s experience as an explorer makes her the favorite to win the crown she never wanted. And though she doesn’t want to be empress, her duty to her uncle compels her to participate in this one last epic adventure. But when the chase turns deadly, it’s clear that more than just the fate of the empire is at stake. Alyssa is on her most important quest yet—and only time will tell if she’ll survive it.

Holy shit, this is EVERYTHING I want the sci-fi YA books to BE and I don't understand why we're not talking about this book!! It was SO GOOD!!
We've got romance that doesn't overshadow the plot, we've got a solid female friendship, we have an epic planet-hopping puzzle chase, political intrigue, a beautiful handling of grief and regret and duty, beautiful LGBTAQ+ representation, and much more!!! The different aliens?? The worlds???? The past relationships between characters and all the characters being interesting and unique to themselves.
I had so much fun reading this. There was literally no part of this book that I wasnt interested or felt was slow. Alyssa was such a good MC to be with. I literally cannot wait to read the sequel!

Recently read: Despite telling myself I don’t need to blow through books this year, here I am, blowing through books. In my defense, it’s January and it’s been snowing a lot.
Self-help is usually not my genre of choice for non-fiction books, but I’ve heard rave reviews about Brené Brown, so I decided to give Daring Greatly a listen. I generally remember what this book was about (being vulnerable and avoiding shame!) but I could not quote a damn thing from it for any kind of life advice. Maybe I’d have retained it better if I’d read it instead? (★★★)
The Bodyguard by Katherine Center was delightful. This was my second or third time trying to read it, and it finally clicked for me. Another closed door romance, but I didn’t mind it so much because the characters were a lot of fun. (★★★★)
YA space scifi that doesn’t suck! Whoo! Crownchasers by Rebecca Coffindaffer has been on my shelf for a while. It was a lot of fun once I got past the first third... and over the fact that there was, indeed, going to be a character called Hell Monkey featured throughout the entire book. Ended on a clfifhanger, so I had to run out to the library to get the sequel, which I’ll probably read this weekend. (★★★★)
Does anyone write about fandom as cringy as Olive Dade does? If so, don’t point them in my direction because I. hate. it. Ship Wrecked is the third in her “what if Game of Thrones actors paid attention to fandom and I got to hash out all my issues with the show runners over 1,000 pages and then have a dolphin slap them in the face at the end” contemporary romance series and it’s probably my least favorite of the bunch. It started out promising, but then there were weird pacing issues — including a SIX YEAR TIME SKIP where most of the romantic and pining development happened off-page — and, of course, the obligatory stupid break-up at 80% that drained all my interest out of seeing these two idiots have a happy ending.
My real issue with this series has always been the way all the actors on her GoT ripoff show pay more attention to fandom than some people in the fandom probably do, and then participate in weird, boundary-crossing ways. In Ship Wrecked, Alex, the hero from the second book, sends co-stars Peter and Maria weekly emails with explicit RPF recommendations about them (WHAT) and they read them (WHAT) and giggle about it/reference them after they have sex instead of, idk, reporting Alex to HR for sexual harassment. You are sending your co-workers PORN about THEMSELVES, sir. But I guess it doesn’t matter because FANDOM IS VALID, Y’ALL. OR SOMETHING. God, I hate it. I HATE IT. (★★)
It’s a jellyfish I took a pic of at the Shedd Aquarium the other week!
The last song you listened to: Lone Dragon Inn by ASKII (yes, it’s a random song in a “Renaissance Faire” playlist on Spotify)
Currently Reading: I’m bouncing between rereading Mercedes Lackey’s Tarma & Kethry series (which subconciously influenced the MF!AU more than I’d realized until I started rereading it a month or so ago) and Crownchasers by Rebecca Coffindaffer (recced by @starknstarwars)
Last Movie: ... honestly, I can’t remember
Craving: Travel. I have SUCH a craving for being somewhere else and especially showing my kids around the world.<-- stealing from J because YES.
What are you wearing right now: Wouldn’t you like to know! (a purple tank top and jeans)
How tall are you: 5′5″ if I stand up straight
Piercings: just regular ear piercings
Tattoos: 1 with a constant desire for more, but I’m too indecisive to actually settle on a design/location
Glasses? Contacts?: Neither!
Last drink: Coffee with milk
Last show: The Legend of Vox Machina/Shadow & Bone season 2
Last thing you ate: an everything bagel with cream cheese (alas! we’re out of lox!)
Favorite color: Blue
Current obsession: I recently fell back in love with knitting. After moving to the (way too hot for me) south a decade and a half ago, I started just collecting yarn instead of actively knitting: Why would I want to make a sweater when it’s only going to be chilly enough to wear it for a week or two out of the year? I don’t want to touch wool when it’s 100F for the twentieth day in a row! So that trip to Chicago jump-started my interest in knitting again - I managed to finish two cowls in as many weeks: one for Miss and one for Mr. Knitter
Unrelated Obsession: I mean, the mf!au has lived in my head rent-free for over a year now. If only I could scrape the stories out of my head and onto the page, I’d have a novel
Any pets: Oreo! a blue heeler/pit rescue mutt
Do you have a crush on anyone: nope
Favorite fictional character: Like, ever? Nah, there’s too many to choose from!
The last place you traveled: Chicago over Spring Break to be a tourist with the hubs and kiddo, as well as to visit my family
Do you know of any sapphic friends with benefits (doesn’t need to be explicitly stated) to lovers books? Or books that have a sapphic physical fast burn with romantic slow burn?
i have a couple with bi mcs in a f/m relationship — take a hint, dani brown by talia hibbert & crownchasers by rebecca coffindaffer — and f/f specifically in storm season by pene henson, knit, purl, a baby and a girl by hettie bell, the romance recipe by ruby barrett, the love song of sawyer bell by avon gale & the girl next door by chelsea m cameron.
if you get this, answer with three random facts about yourself and send it to the last seven blogs in your notifs! anon or not, doesn’t matter, let’s get to know the person behind the blog <3 (no pressure, of course!)
Ok, I really couldn’t think of anything so…
1. I want to be a primary school teacher
2. I paint my nails a different colour pretty much every week because the process helps me relax
3. I’m currently reading crownchasers (it said it was lgbtq+ but so far only one side character has been queer. Annoying 😩)
I had a goal with myself to read 52 books this year, since I like reading and wanted to do more of it. One of the books on the list is a manga, but I personally feel like its inclusion is offset by the two nonfiction books (since I have a harder time getting through nonfiction).

Hello! You liked a post I made and I have been fangirling incessantly for... several minutes. Which, to be fair, happens frequently when the subject of Crown Chasers or Throne Breakers arises, but all the same, thank you for the sheer amount of joy your work has brought to my life.
Even that time it made me cry in the middle of Sprouts. Just me and a nice heirloom tomato in the self-checkout lane, thoroughly undone by an audiobook. It was a moment indeed.
As this is an "Ask", there ought to be a question, so: is Setter autistic? I like to think he is :)
Oh my gosh, this is a message that made my whole week for sure. It means a whole hell of a lot that those books brought joy to you. I do apologize about the breakdown in Sprouts, though 😂
As far as Setter goes, I didn't deliberately write him as autistic (I just knew I loved writing him as this driven, serious, empathetic boy). That being said, I'm a firm believer in the power of the reader to bring their own perspectives and angles to a story in a way that makes it uniquely their experience. Which I suppose is a fancy way of saying I fully support your reading of him on the autism spectrum. 💜
I will say that he is canonically ace, and in my head, he and Sharva grow very close and end up in a sweet, slow burn relationship.
