The Guardian is now running Quick Cryptic Crosswords, aimed specifically at people who don't have experience with cryptics. I have been explained how to do cryptics but never actually learned, so I'm having an amazing time with these. If you think you are the sort of person who would enjoy cryptics but don't know where to start... this might be where

my brain always tries to link the crossword to Dan and Phil and why are there so many clues today that make me think of them (it’s the brainrot)
One day I will get a puzzle published with a dan and phil reference, that’s a promise.

All that is Gold
It's somewhat of a surprise when Moist enters the bank one day to find a stranger going by Ashes set up there, proclaiming themself the new chairman. But it's fine, right? All he has to do is figure out who they are and what they want, reinstate Mr Fusspot as the rightful chairma- er, dog, and make sure the Times doesn't hear anything at all about any of this. Simple!
Or, I return to my Mechs/Discworld crossover niche

i’ve started getting into cryptic crosswords lately. they’re so frustrating but so satisfying. i love how unhinged a format it is and subsequently how unhinged you feel trying to come up with an answer. today i got “titrate” because the clue said bird and rodent and i was like – tit rat??? and i was right. tit rat

just learned that times (the british publication known for their cryptics) recently ran a "modern slang" cryptic crossword with lots of youth-oriented references. couldn't play it myself because it's paid but i watched simon on cracking the cryptic do it and solved along
youtube
and like yeah it's definitely more approachable for people like me, and i definitely got a bunch of entries far before simon did, but come on you made a "modern lingo" crossword and there's still no video games in it.
looking forward to more of these in the future lol this is great

my girlfriend does a lot of bits that are like... I ask how they're feeling and they say 'like a bike' which means "too tired" and I have to work out what they mean. I've started to do it too like I might say I feel 'like a robin renault' = 'not as tired as you might think' (because they only have 3 wheels)
Anyway they're also into cryptic crosswords and I'm starting to realise these jokes are possibly training me to get into them too.

A group I'm in has a thing where each day we make cryptic clues for the Merriam-Webster word of the day. Today I woke up, saw it was "grok," and immediately thought "cool, it's 'girlcock' leaving out every second letter." I got as far as drafting a couple possible clues using that ("Odds of girlcock? Get it on a deep level"; "Strongly grasp girlcock on and off") before reviewing the basic premise with a more awake brain and realizing that actually, "grok" isn't "girlcock" leaving out every second letter. Glad I caught that before posting.
