YGO OC Week Day 3: Deck
Penelope uses Crystrons, a WATER Machine Synchro deck that focuses on synchro summoning during the opponent's turn. In addition to the standard methods of quick synchroing, the maindeck tuner monsters have the ability to make a machine synchro during the opponent's turn using themselves and one other material in another zone. Quan can use a non-tuner from hand; Citree can use a non-tuner from the graveyard, banishing both; and Rion can use a non-tuner that's banished, shuffling back both.
Her ace monsters are a joint effort between Phoenix and Quariongandrax; the latter would be the one she'd pick if she had to choose. The massive mechs emphasize both of the advanced forms of synchro (accel synchro and multiple tuning, respectively), forcing her to push her advancements even further beyond.
Penelope finds a particular bond between herself and Citree; the monster is a critical part of her strategy, but is also great for dragging someone out of their depths or failure and making them into something better. She sees a bit of herself in it, and thus it's one of her favorite cards.
Tumblr media
While she worked with her father to build the deck, she's stuck with it because it matches her personality: adaptable and ready to respond to whatever the situation may be. No one option is perfect for every scenario, but the flexibility and understanding of the opponent makes her a formidable foe. It also allows her to try all sorts of creative plays, many of which the opponent won't see coming.
Of course, no duelist worth their salt would lack a series of summoning chants and voice lines, so here's some of Penelope's (this is designed to be read like a DL "all voice lines" video, with some cards cut due to lack of interesting lines):
Tumblr media
"Crystron Quan's effect! I can Synchro Summon a Machine during your turn using it and a monster in my hand!"
Tumblr media
"Crystron Citree's effect! I can Synchro Summon a Machine during your turn using it and a monster in my graveyard! Scrap Synchro!"
Tumblr media
"Crystron Rion's effect! I can Synchro Summon a Machine during your turn using it and my banished monster! Dimensional Synchro!"
Tumblr media
"Become the instrument that reforges my monsters for battle! Synchro Summon! I craft the level 3 Synchro Tuner monster, Martial Metal Marcher!"
"Martial Metal Marcher's effect! When it's summoned, I get back a tuner from my graveyard, but its effects are negated."
Tumblr media
"Show off the integration that will form the future! Synchro Summon! I create the level 4 Synchro Tuner, Crystron Quandax!"
"Quandax's effect! I can synchro summon during your turn using monsters I control!"
"When Quandax is destroyed, I can summon back a non-synchro Crystron from my graveyard."
Tumblr media
"Crystals combine to craft a defense against your assault! Synchro Summon! Appear, level 5! Crystron Ametrix!"
"Ametrix's effect! If it's synchro summoned, all of your special summoned monsters are switched to defense position! Gemstone Guard!"
"When Ametrix is destroyed, I can summon back a non-synchro Crystron from my graveyard."
Tumblr media
"Metal forms a carapace to protect me from your attacks! Synchro Summon! Appear, level 6! Powered Inzektron!"
"Inzektron's effect! It can't be destroyed this turn, and I take no more damage!"
Tumblr media
"Combine your forces to forge the engine that topples dynasties! Synchro Summon! Appear, level 7! Samurai Destroyer!"
"When your card effect makes Samurai Destroyer leave the field, it can bring back a machine from the graveyard!"
"Samurai Destroyer returns itself!"
Tumblr media
"Machinations combine to form the apex dreadnaught! Synchro Summon! Come out with a splash! Level 9, Navy Dragon Mech!"
"Navy Dragon Mech's effect! If it's summoned, I negate a card you control for every tuner in my graveyard! Short circuit 'em!"
Tumblr media
"The fire of my passion burns bright enough to stop you! Synchro Summon! Appear in a blaze of crimson to shatter my enemy's hopes! Level 9! Vermillion Dragon Mech!"
"Vermillion Dragon Mech's effect! By banishing a tuner, I can destroy a card on the field!"
Tumblr media
"The contributions of many combine to form the greatest advancements of all! Synchro Summon! Channel the souls of the machines to lead me to victory! Level 9, Crystron Quariongandrax!"
"Quariongandrax's effect! For each material used for its summon, I can target a monster from your field or graveyard, then banish them all!"
"When Quariongandrax is destroyed, I can summon any banished monster back to my field."
Tumblr media
"The technologies of the present combine to form the advancements of the future! Accel Synchro! Forge yourself from the bleeding edge in a crimson flash! Level 9, Crystron Phoenix!"
"Phoenix's effect! If it's synchro summoned, I banish all spells and traps from your field and graveyard!"
"When Phoenix is destroyed, I can summon back another monster from my graveyard."
Tumblr media
"My tactics have led me to completely outsmart you! I activate the trap card, Linear Equation Cannon!"
"The conditions are just right, so I can shuffle your cards into your deck!"

Mad, its too generic. this card is really useful in predaplants, its native archetype, but its materials allow it to be splashed in literally any deck, allowing for the usage of powerful from-deck fusion spells like Fusion Destiny to summon annoying boss monsters. rather than be banned outright, i think it should be errata'd to require plant monsters as materials, which will keep its splashability in plant decks and allow for it to be used as its original purpose as a predaplant support card.
Tumblr media
how does this card make you feel?

played through most of yugioh world championship 2010's story mode a couple years ago, struggling through with a dragon deck and a lot of save states, until I accidentally fucked up with them and deleted a bunch of my progress right before the final battle, causing my motivation to drop to zero
anyway. picked it back up a couple days ago on my actual 3ds and huh. I am. genuinely astonishingly better at this game now. got a largely warrior deck that's good at punishing defending monsters (which the AI doesn't understand how to correct for lol) and I just keep winning with it? like my only losses have been one with a structure deck I didn't get on with, and a bunch of dud tries against those single player tag team motherfuckers in the third turf war. srsly I fucking hate those guys so much, they're such a pain in the gd arse and harpies are so fucking hard to fight when you only have access to shit cards and can't leave to get more and I swear to fuck I had actually given up and activated the cheat to insta-win and it was the FIRST EXACT GAME I had that as a working option that I got an absolute perfect storm of cards to snatch the easiest fucking win so I didn't even need it and aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgh
anyway I then wound up 3600LP:~11000LP against sayer thanks to obnoxious celtic guardian vs two magical androids. and somehow pulled it around to win within like 3 turns by summoning catastor and just quietly deleting everything. catastor is wonderful and I am saddened that once the dark signer fights get underway, it will become much less useful.
but yeah I am honestly surprised at how much easier I'm finding things now, considering the only time I've come close to *playing* yugioh lately has been choreographing fights for phantom limb, which has been 90% staring at crystron monsters and their itty bitty text detailing their excitingly modern ygo effects. but I guess the many hours spent watching yugitubers have actually seeped into my brain and improved my skills. as well as teach me how op fairy box can be. thank you fairy box for buying me large amounts of time while I wait for the materials to summon catastor.

YGO OC Week Day 1: Introduction!
Tumblr media
Hi all! This is my favorite YGO blorbo, Penelope Smith! She's designed for the VRAINS setting, though there are a few instances where she gets thrown in other settings for fun.
More info on her below the break! (Also, all of the art here is commissioned; credit is in the alt-text.)
Appearance
Penelope Smith is young woman with mostly-straight light brown hair that falls to her upper back, who stands around 5'8" in height. She can often be seen in the Den City High uniform, coupled with a pink, heart-shaped hairpin above her left eye. In addition to the uniform, she often wears white leggings that go to the lower part of her thigh. She has green eyes and almost always has a cheery expression.
Tumblr media
She also has a VRAINS avatar, Transcendence, but details of that will come at a later day!
Personality
Penelope is helpful and excitable to a fault. She will always do her best to help out others, often to her own detriment in terms of time commitment. As a result, she is often pulled in many directions to the point of tiring herself out, but she manages to keep up a cheery demeanor all the time. Any stress that she does encounter gets bottled up, lest she show signs of weakness or cracks in her personality to others.
Her outlook could be described as "pragmatically optimistic". She is always hopeful that things will work out, but she believes things will get better because she (and others) will make them better.
If she were asked why she has that worldview and demeanor, she'd say that she wants to be the person she needed a few years ago. She needed positivity, so she brings it. She needed hope and a friend, so she brings it. She needed honesty and security, so she brings it.
Tumblr media
Of course, the drawback to wanting to be so friendly, open, and generous is that she can often be extremely naive and manipulable. She often forgets that people can lie and is very easy to take advantage of; she often gives the benefit of the doubt to others when she really shouldn't.
Her name, Penelope, was chosen because she was reforging herself. She kept her prior last name. (Out of character, that was chosen because she's a machine user.)
Biography
Penelope was born [REDACTED] to loving parents. She partook in many standard activities for her age, and her father helped to instill in her a love of robotics. He also taught her how to play Duel Monsters.
However, when she transitioned near the start of puberty, she was the subject of much bullying, and many of her friends turned on her. Conveniently, around the same time, her family had to move away, so she never really got to have closure on her former friends would have treated her; her new classmates only knew her as Penelope.
She spent the next several years of her life in Den City, continuing her research and schooling. She remained near the top of her class academically.
During the events of VRAINS, she wanted to help, but didn't know how, and was risk-averse enough to avoid being caught in the crossfire of many of the incidents.
Deck
Penelope uses a Crystron deck. The cards allow her to adapt to the situation as needed, keeping herself flexible, while also being defensive.
She has a deep appreciation for Crystron Citree and sees it as a parallel to herself; she likes to find people who are in their darkest hour and drag them out to become something better than they ever were.
Tumblr media
(There are also other canons of her which have used other decks, including Machina, Geargia, and the custom archetype of Reclamatron, but they aren't relevant here.)
