A rant on Carmen Sandiego's S1 E1 Cold Open (Spoilers)

A cold open refers to jumping into a story before opening credits or title

Another analysis rant! This time where it all began. So I know a lot of people have praised the first 2 pilot episodes but I like to put my own take on why the show's cold open worked so well (In my opinion).

According to the internet, a cold open needs to:

Engage the Audience Quickly: It should immediately capture interest, whether through humor, drama, action, or suspense.

Set the Tone: It establishes the emotional or thematic mood for the rest of the episode or film (e.g., funny, intense, mysterious).

Introduce Key Themes or Plotlines: Sometimes, a cold open hints at a story arc or central conflict that will unfold, but it should never give away too much.

Provide a Hook: Leave the audience wanting to see what happens next. It can either resolve quickly or leave a lingering question.

Be Short and Sweet: A cold open is typically brief, setting up just enough to intrigue without overloading the audience.

Here's how I think they did it:

The show starts by showing off its art style throughout the cold open which hooks art enthusiasts. Some of the more visual stunning shots used in reviews I've seen can be traced to this episode.

It introduces the plot of Carmen being a master thief chased by the police without giving away too much more. This is done from descriptions from Jules and Devineaux and brief images of Carmen which make her reveal all the more stunning.

It hooks older audiences given that it makes references to her previous incarnations such as the fact that she "leaves clues and wears bold colors".

The introduction of the characters are also very well done:

Chase is presented as an overconfident "professional" from how he says "the game is over" and how he talks down to Jules.

Jules is presented as a soft spoken, intelligent "amateur" based on the fact that she's only been at Interpol "for a fortnight" and her small info history dump about Poitiers... (That is not an attack - I genuinely like history facts I SWEAR!)

Carmen is presented as a suave, cultured and (dare I say) attractive thief in the first shot she is introduced in. Her introduction still gives me chills with the way the camera moves and the music builds up.

5. The cold open sets the tone which balances the action and humor. This can be seen in the chase between Devineax and Carmen.

Alright here is the part where I rant and try to analyse the opening (feel free to add your analysis as well)

As mentioned earlier, Carmen's introduction is just perfect... and probably gave some people gay awakenings... from what I've heard.

When she's robbing the museum, we see how deadly her job is... yet fun!

Chase's quote of " Why must the elevator date back two centuries? WAS NO ONE EVER IN A HURRY BACK THEN!?!?" not only gives insight into his rush before thinking personality but also is one of the funniest line deliveries in the show and is underrated.

Just as Carmen is about to steal the diamond, she is caught off guard by her dolls. On first watch the viewer is drawn in by its mystery but on rewatch, knowing her backstory - I realised the shots used for her dolls and the diamond might have symbolism.

The diamond is bright and obvious which might make the viewer take as her target and overall goal.

The dolls however are in the dark - first time viewer would take it as mystery. Once you know her dolls are her connection to her past, the dolls in the shadows could represent how Carmen was "in the dark" about her past. She didn't know anything about her dad or deeper connection to VILE.

The chase scene between Carmen and Devineaux does a good job at further establishing characters and tone of the show. Throughout the chase, Carmen is presented as experienced and swift yet likes to taunt her enemies while Chase is shown as determined and... well, less experienced when it comes to super thieves.

The chase scene also uses music, which can be seen in depending who the camera is focused on, to present characters (any music professionals - please help. I am not one):

Carmen - quite elegant with plucky melody presenting accuracy and experience.

Chase - Sounds deep. Maybe a little saxophone and deep bass? Presents grit?

The chase ends with Carmen's "Au revoir" highlighting her taunting and being cultured. It also ends with Devineaux falling to his car - setting off my favorite running gag of car destruction and reminding the viewers that this show has cartoon logic.

I was writing an analysis on the entire 2 episode pilot at one point but I got busy. I tried getting back into it only to realise the work load. So I decided to take what I've got for the opening. Do with that as you will.

Do I think the opening is perfect? Well yes but actually no - I'm aware there are flaws. Please point them out.

Did I write this at night? Yes. Hence sloppy writing.

Did I forget to greet you happy New Year? Actually yeah... HAPPY NEW YEAR! And remember to always protect the face!

CARMEN SANDIEGO (2019) ║ S1-2 + favourite details

So I'm not on discord but what I do have are screencaps, educated guesses, and a list of portfolio websites for some of CS2019's background artists.

As a bit of forewarning, I've tried on-and-off to see if there were any visual clues to how exactly the various faculty classrooms work in relation to the building's outside, and the short answer is 'not really'. When it comes to the group faculty room, the best estimate I've been able to make for its location is that it's at the back of the main building on approximately the third floor, mostly based on this shot of Mechie in the doorway of the faculty room with the bottom curve of the school's atrium circle-window visible behind her (see arrow).

Technically that angle for the circle-window should probably line up better with the second floor

but there actually looks to be four floors total

and to have the faculty room on the third floor with a double-high ceiling seemed to be the best compromise between the above view behind Mechie and the fact that it also seems to include the top part of another (presumably the back of the school) circle window.

I did check to see whether the faculty room could somehow be in the topmost section of the atrium circle-window (because it technically wasn't visible in that second screencap), but the most complete image I could capture still did not seem to have anything consistent with setting an entire room up there.

Further confusing the issue are those rectangular side windows with the triangular mullions that apparently extend from the dais all the way to flanking the main door

because that is night sky visible through them in at least two different episodes (S1E01, S01E08, and then a different angle of the faculty room as per S2E06 to compare to the 1st screencap, which was from the same episode), so it's probably not a goof. And while that view could be reasonable behind the faculty seats, and even around the sides to a certain point, I really don't know how that's supposed to work for the windows nearest the doors because this

is the corridor leading up to them. Please note its width, and also the absence of windows of any kind on either side of that door. (Also also the change in doorframe shape, although maybe that's just For The Aesthetic?)

and once again, I am not seeing any windows even remotely matching those of the faculty room. Personally, I've been going with Bellum having created some kind of pocket dimension because it makes about as much sense as anything else. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Otherwise, I would suspect that the classrooms/student-access areas are mostly on the second and first floor because both of these scenes

seem to take place on either side of the atrium at about a second-floor level given the shape of the railing both to their left plus above them (left screencap) as well as the crossbars on the windows to Black Sheep's left (right screencap). The third (+/- fourth) floor could then be a faculty-only area (possibly their living quarters), though that would be mostly based on the assumption of a boarding school style set-up rather than any true visual clues.

she was in the same building as the regular dormitories (possibly the single story section closer to the beach?)

though why she felt the need to make such a production of moving from what was essentially one wing of the building to another, that I cannot say. ;D

hi Kai!! Have you seen Vee's new interactions in-game? My poor little baby is so insecure, like in the interaction between her and Flutter. The girl reacts to the fact that Flutter writes about her in the diary (I'm pretty sure she writes her opinion about everytoon eventually), like she fears that Flutter can think bad about her, especially when Gigi laughed at whatever stuff, and Vee thought she laughed at her.

Or her not understanding why some toons think that she's rude and ungrateful when she genuinely didn't mean to sound harsh. Bro just let me near Vee, I swear I will hug her so tightly she'll forget about all the bad stuff :((

She doesn't want to seem like she doesn't know everything because what good gameshow host doesn't know the answers to their questions by heart?

She doesn't want people to think she's dumb because she's a robot - she's EXPECTED to be smart - to be flawless and spotless because she was made to represent a bright future. A future that never happened.

She's anxious about everyone seeing her glitch out because it ruins the facade, it ruins her reality, her sense of who she's supposed to be.

She's not an asshole, she's just trying to be who everyone thinks she is. She just doesn't want to fail.

PJO ROMAN DEMIGOD HUNTRESS HEADCANONS:🌕 DIANA: GODDESS OF THE HUNT, MOON, WOODLANDS, AND CHILDBIRTH 🏹

Author’s Note: Diana following right after Apollo here we goooo. This one is going to be very similar to the Artemis headcanons but there are some twists after I did some research on Diana and made some conclusions. The Huntresses are going to eat good today! Alright, unlike Apollo, there are some differences that Diana has with Artemis. For one thing, Diana is considered a triple deity; a deity with three forms that function as an entire whole, with Diana merged with Luna/Selene, and the underworld, Hecate. (this also applies vise-versa with Hecate’s roman aspect, Trivia), so Diana is witchcraft associated with not only Hecate, but also Nyx, and Erebeus.

So when the Huntresses of Diana and Artemis merge, the latter have a bit of an adjustment to get used to. While they both serve the same goddess with the same values and oaths, and in turn there’s less of a conflict compared to the Greeks and Roman merge, it’s still something to get used to.

So with Diana being a goddess of crossroads (kinda), you often find promising hunteress or those seeking Diana/Artemis’ help at crossroads, if not looking for Hecate/Trivia.

While Diana and Artemis are two separate beings, sort of, it’s not as severe when among her huntresses. She’s not as coherent like Apollo, but it’s something.

As huntresses, magic is more of an applied skill now. There was always magical elements when you hunt, but its very everyday with your parkas, your tents, and the like, with Diana, it’s more incorporated. Using and chanting spells, bestowing blesses and curses, and healing and hurting are part of your skills as much as tracking and your archery skills.

Speaking of magic, you’ll find yourself in more contact with more diverse people. Not just magical folk, but also those who respect and pray to Diana, Hecate, among other gods. Those who practise Wicca are one of  those among those folks, and they are often times happy to invite your goddess and the hunters into their home and allowing you brief hospitality. In times, they’ve also helped when required and in turn often alert you and the huntresses of any dangers or evils they have seen.

Since Diana is considered a triple deity, associated with other gods like Hecate, Nyx, Erebus, and Selene/Luna, as part of the practice, the hunteress observe moon viewing parties or participate in nightly rituals. What those rituals are exactly no one knows except for a true hunteress of Diana/Artemis, but what I can tell you is that it involves the moon, its phases, offerings. I’ve said too much but only the night and moon knows. Don’t pry or let anyone uninvited know; the wild forest is already dangerous but now its a magical, wild forest; if you’re not careful, you’ll be lucky to just get lost or be turned into a deer.

Welcome Home Hyacinth Theory 🏠🪻🐛

Hello Tumblr! Most Welcome Home theories are just little bits and pieces or “Wally is evil, guys look!”/”Wally is not evil! He is a goober!” etc.

This theory is fully fledged and provides a plot and evidence. I call it the Welcome Home “Hyacinth” theory, after the myth that it is based on. This will be a very long post so here is a TLDR: Julie kills Eddie while they are playing croquette-bowling out of jealousy because he is getting too close to Frank, who is supposed to be her boyfriend/best friend within the show. Either just Eddie or everyone involved gets replaced, except for Wally, who witnessed everything. This is why we have all of those videos of Wally dissociating.

I have been sitting around in my toom rambling to myself about this theory like a madman for over a week so I decided to share it.

Alright, let’s get into it! I have evidence to back up every single one of those claims, and I will include it in this post.

I want to be very thorough with explaining this. I’ll start by establishing that there are three main plots within Welcome Home (that I have noticed, anyways):

The plot of the late 60’s - early 70’s TV show, Welcome Home - only related to published episodes, books, audios, etc. that would have been shown to the public at the time of airing Welcome Home

“Behind the show” - feelings and actions of the puppets outside of the show (such as Frank and Eddie being a couple, or Frank being nonbinary)

The Welcome Home Restoration Project - people working to restore the TV show, Welcome Home, and find any and all information related to it and who made it

Okay so for the rest of this essay, when I mention BtS, it is related to the “behind the show” plot. I will color these things blue. When I write WtS, it is related to the “within the show” plot. I will color these things green. When I write WHRP, it is related to the Welcome Home Restoration Project. I will color these things pink. I will also mention things that have been said either on Clown’s Tumblr blog, Clown’s Twitter, or old streams. I will say CS, meaning “Clown source” to denote these things and color them orange. Clown source and behind the show areas often overlap, so Clown source information is dominant over behind the show information (if it is both I will just color it orange). Good? Good.

Now let’s establish our characters (only the ones related to this theory) and their relationships to one another. We’ll go alphabetically, starting with Eddie, then moving onto Frank, Julie, and Wally. 

I’m going to assume that if you are reading this, you have already visited the website (clownillustration.com) and have a basic understanding of who Eddie is. So I will only focus on the elements of his character that will be relevant in this theory.

Eddie (WtS) is clumsy and overworks himself. He is often dragged into Julie’s games. His house (post office) looks like this:

Note the hyacinth flowers and the butterfly. Eddie (BtS) loves Frank. (CS) He is married to Frank in one art on Clown’s Tumblr. BY THE WAY IT TOOK FOREVER TO FIND THIS IMAGE!!!! THEY ARE IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER!!

Frank (WtS) is Julie’s boyfriend as it is implied that they are a couple within the show (I know a lot of us don’t like hearing this, but remember the three plots) (also for everyone that is going to argue with me on this, go look on their little profiles in the neighborhood section of the website and come back to me) and best friend. His house looks like this:

(CS) As I said before, in one art on Clown’s Tumblr, Eddie and Frank are married (you can tell by the rings on their fingers in that image) . Frank is nonbinary but uses he/him pronouns (Clown refers to Frank on his blog with only he/him pronouns, so that is what I will use. Nonbinary people do not have to use they/them pronouns! Pronouns are not equal to gender!)

(WtS) Julie is a rainbow monster. Her thing is that she likes to make up and play games. She seems to be very strong (perhaps related to her being a rainbow monster), as she can easily lift Wally and is indirectly referenced to [throw a baseball very well] by Barnaby in the Live Interview audio. She also incorporates bowling into a lot of games where it is unnecessary. She seems to be immature, which is usually used to make her a playful character. Her and Frank are a couple. In several arts, her horns are different shapes or even nonexistent, implying that she has some ability to change her form. Her house looks like this:

Note the heart motif throughout the design. (BtS) Julie is best friends with Frank. (CS) She is genderfluid (she is only referred to using she/her pronouns on Clown’s blog, so that is what I will use). 

(WtS) Wally is the main character in Welcome Home. His house is alive and is named Home. Home is often considered to be a ninth neighbor. Wally often communicates for Home. (WHRP) Wally signs Home’s name in the guestbook (as Home does not have hands) (please stop with the tentacles I have seen the art please stop for the love of god where did that even come from). (WtS) The other neighbors frequently ignore and talk over Wally, but he doesn’t seem to mind, saying that he loves all of his friends in the live interview audio.

Okay so now that that is established, let’s look at some promotional art. Promotional art is not necessarily canon and may contain outdated designs, but may hint at the plot of Welcome Home. 

There is one more artwork that I would like to add, but it is on Clown’s KoFi. Here is a link to it that you can look at if you are subscribed to Clown’s KoFi:

I won’t describe the image because some of you may not be subscribed to Clown’s KoFi. But if you are, you will see that the image supports my theory.

While we are discussing that image, I would also like to say that I believe that the puppets are some kind of biological organisms. I don’t have much evidence for this right now, but I may make a theory in the future. 

We will come back to those promotional arts soon. Right now, let’s look at Frank and Eddie’s houses and discuss some symbolism and mythology.

Frank’s house has sunflowers outside of it. Sunflowers are a symbol of Apollo. Eddie has hyacinths outside of his post office, obviously a symbol of Hyacinthus. Hyacinthus and Apollo were lovers, but Hyacinthus tragically died. Let me tell the story so we have context. (I am really into Greek mythology by the way, it’s always been a special interest since middle school but I am also a Hellenic pagan, you should follow my witchcraft and paganism blog, creatively named @maxiswitchcraftandpaganblog)

So Apollo, god of the sun, art, archery, and LOTS of various other things, loved Hyacinthus, who was a mortal Spartan man. And Hyacinthus loved him too, by the way. The god of the (west? don’t feel like googling it) wind, Zephyrus, was jealous of Hyacinthus, because he also loved Apollo. 

One day, Apollo and Hyacinthus were playing discus (like frisbee but the frisbee is giant and made of metal, kind of like a shield). Apollo threw the discus to Hyacinthus, but Zephyrus blew the discus off course with the wind, causing it to hit Hyacinthus in the head and kill him. Apollo created the hyacinth flower from Hyacinthus’ blood as he died, but in some myths made him a god. (read more on Apollo and Hyacinthus here)

I’m going to draw some parallels here. Frank = Apollo, Eddie = Hyacinthus, Julie = Zephyrus. Now Frank’s and Eddie’s parallels make sense because of the flowers, but where did I get Julie=Zephyrus from? Recall that (WtS) Julie and Frank are supposed to be a couple. Now, (BtS) Julie may or may not like Frank in that way, but she certainly enjoys being close to him as his best friend. Since she is already established as an immature character, it would make sense that she would be jealous seeing Frank get closer to Eddie.

Pause. So WtS, Frank and Julie are together. BtS, Frank and Eddie are together. If these are separate, then what is Julie jealous about? (WtS) Frank has been seen getting closer to Eddie even in the official material of the show. An example of this is him telling Eddie that he works too hard at the end of the “Eddie’s Big Lift” storybook record. So his BtS love for Eddie is leaking into the WtS canon. That is a problem for Julie, who is supposed to be Frank’s girlfriend WtS. So she comes up with an idea to fix this, much like the jealous god, Zephyrus. 

So what does she do? Let’s turn our attention to the “Just So” song demo. This song was never finished with instrumentals, and for a reason. The puppets function as actors in the show, as it is obvious that they have their own free will, and Julie does something that the writers do not expect later in this episode. So the song was never finished because the episode was ruined. 

In the “Just So” song demo, Frank and Julie are about to play croquette bowling. It was supposed to be just croquette, as Frank put on his croquette bow tie, but last minute, Julie added bowling to the mix. 

Wally knocks on the door and interrupts their song, saying that Home wants to play croquette bowling too. This implies that Julie told someone else that they would be playing croquette bowling after she added bowling. I feel like Wally and Home overheard Julie telling Eddie that they would be playing croquette bowling. This would make sense, as Wally often stands by and listens while the other neighbors talk. It is not unusual for Eddie to participate in Julie’s games, either, as we see from Julie playing “business woman in the big city” with him. [add a photo]

The song recording ends before we see them playing croquette bowling together. But I have a piece of evidence to tell us how it ends. Look at this promotional art again.

You probably assumed that the figure in the back was holding a hammer, but that could actually be a croquette mallet!

It’s covered in some gory-looking stuff, probably from Eddie. Now look at the flower. Whose eyes look like that? Almond-shaped, round pupils. Only one character: Wally. Wally was a witness, which would make sense for him, since he often watches on as the other neighbors do things. 

Julie is holding the flower in front of her, looking innocent. This is a stretch, but I think that this might be symbolism for her saying that she didn’t do it on purpose, Wally saw the whole thing, ask him! And Wally doesn’t know what to do. I don’t know what he does from there.

Maybe this image is a clue? I genuinely don’t know. Once again, promotional art is not necessarily canon, but we can use the concepts from it in theories.

This next part is also a bit of a stretch. The neighbors having a memory of something like that happening would ruin their “acting” (I think they are just being recorded as they do what they would naturally do). The show can’t have that. The solution? Replace everyone involved. 

Now go back and look in the promotional art section and look at that art of Frank. It looks like Frank is laying among extra puppet parts. They have extras!

And this is why Wally is dissociating in the videos we see when we click on the bugs. They did not replace him, because like the neighbors, they didn’t even notice he was there.

Okay yeah that’s the theory. It was really hard to get this into a coherent Google Doc and gather all the links. I was just rambling to myself about this in my room over and over pacing around for like a week. But yeah here you go, hope it's a good theory, sorry if it's not lol please be nice to me

deep dive: something in the orange

this is my unprovoked, 1.1k words long, unofficial official close reading/annotations post for something in the orange. i waffled about writing this out, mostly because i wanted reader interpretations to take more space than my intentions. but it has plagued me, even as i did annotations to kae’s annotations. in some way, this is a more organized version of the bits i dumped on poor kae that had nothing to do w their reading of the story lol

more importantly, treat this as what i��encoded into the work—your own interpretation (decoding) is no less valid!

let’s get the small trivia out of the way:

exchanging second buttons – lifted from a practice in high school graduations in japan, where boys can give the second button of their uniform (gakuran) to the person they like (some people say it’s bc this is the button closest to the heart)

setting

not sure how surprising this will be, but i actually don’t call this an apocalypse fic in my head, even as that probably most fits in terms of “tags”. to me, it’s an interstellar au remix, as it’s pre-movie timeline, and set in a different part of the world. based on the wiki, the start of blight to the start of the resource wars is approx. 5 years, hence d–2183 being roughly that when you do the math.

on form

the use of screenplay for some scenes was not just a nod to sk being a filmmaker. for one, i like how the script format is concise enough to get one into the character’s headspace while immediately casting the reader as a viewer. you are there, but you are also a voyeur. the parts of the relationship that the reader-viewer is privy to is questionable right from the form itself, and this unfolds more fully in the content.

also, screenplay as a format is most used in film, right? whether it’s acknowledged or not, there is an assumed fictional/manufactured element in a script. this reinforces questions around narrativization and memorializing, which the work grapples with as a whole.

finally, it’s purposefully misleading—the screenplay does imply that these are from sk’s camera. but some scenes written in screenplay are purposefully “wrong”—there are notes on how things are cut (ie its not raw footage), or visual cues that don’t quite add up.

(edit: much of this screenplay format + blurred fiction/reality interplay is inspired by goodbye eri, which i highly recommend!!)

blurring memory, fiction, and reality

seungkwan’s own approach to his memory has been fractured by grief, and so there are things he is unable to confront without circumscribing it in some way. memory, fiction, and reality are ideas all in tension w each other in sito. all of them come to a head in the two scenes where seungkwan interacts with his footage:

memory vs reality: how much of what happened does he remember? think of how traumatic memories tend to be suppressed by the brain, or when sk realizes that he doesn’t remember some of the clips he had been replaying.

memory vs fiction: how much of what he remembers is actually what happened? think of how with each remembrance, some “memories” tend to change in minute ways. remember seungkwan thinking of how memory blurs with dreaming.

fiction vs reality: this is a little trickier, but there was a conversation (written as screenplay) on making the boo-logs into a short film. right after that scene was a conversation w vernon precisely on that topic. kae absolutely nailed this in their reading: how much of editing is fictionalizing? what are the implications of cutting and stitching scenes together? how much of memorializing a real person is fictionalizing them? sk has the burden of deciding how the love of his life will be remembered by the rest of the world, now and to come.

(trivia: in the scene right after the boo-logs convo, it moves to seungkwan “replaying the footage”. note that i didn’t say which clip he replayed, even if a reader may assume it to be the previous scene.)

the ones that are most likely “less real”—could be his memories, an edited version of compiled footage, his memories altered by repeated remembrance/trauma—would be the screenplay scenes without the d- on top! there’s the wedding w the cut to different settings (how are they suddenly in the beach? why are their garments wet even when the screenplay says they’re back in the wedding venue? etc.). and then there’s the two headed calf scene (why are the stars clear if we know from an earlier scene that sk’s camera doesn’t do well at night?).

the lost house

seungkwan never returns home—after d=0, he just ended up in the camp. it’s not as big of a theme in the story, but in the scene where he replays footage, there’s some stuff there on how the house he remembers blurs with the house of his dreams/daydreams (oneirism). i mentioned that bachelard’s the poetics of space was smth that held my hand while writing. while bachelard talks of it in terms of our childhood homes, i just thought there’s smth to be said about how a house we daydream about can also be the house we daydream in—and often it is a house we lost.

addendum: further, there’s a part somewhere on how inventories do not just catalog possession, but measure the potential for loss (?). that’s a line from baxter’s essay, in his wonderlands collection.

to end,

aside from the deeply personal catharsis of writing this, and the satisfaction of writing grief in a way that feels true to how i experienced it, my favorite thing about sito is that it places a lot of trust in the reader. i did my best to not make ambiguities as plot holes but rather as things unsaid, because it would be a disservice to spoonfeed them. it was essentially trying to write to a reader smarter than i (which is one of my favorite writing tips).

more importantly, sito trusts that the grief and love will be received with tenderness, and that it will reverberate. i had hoped that not being over-picturesque/descriptive made it a more intimate experience. my grief, drawn in purposefully-oblique strokes, became seungkwan’s grief. by not lending these to overly rich description, but honoring the pain nonetheless, i hoped for them to be more readily absorbed/felt/dreamt of as your grief too.

Self-Promo Sunday

The other day, I heard the song "That's How You Know" from the movie Enchanted, and it reminded me of this story I wrote. I also recently read an article that said some of the men who danced for that song were original chimney sweeps from "Chim-Chim-Cheree" in Mary Poppins, and the flowers they're holding resemble their chimney sweep brushes. I thought that was pretty cool trivia!

This was originally posted on Valentine's Day 2023, but love stories aren't just for one holiday out of the year, and Captain Swan is my favorite love story. I also have to say I'm quite proud of the pic set I created for it.

This is a one-shot of almost 3300 words, is canon compliant (giving us some CS domestic married scenes) and is rated T. I hope you enjoy it, whether reading it for the first time or rereading it.

Aurora was born in a land almost as new as her birth, where conquerors came and went and took everything they could–including her biological mother’s life. Dead, by the hands of a cruel man who took the months-old baby to Spain with him and presented it to his wife, as the two could not have children of their own. For the next few years, she lived there, mostly sheltered from the world and society in general, raised with love and tenderness by a woman she learned to call mother. However, as the gorgon grew older and was slowly introduced to the Spanish society, her powers began showing more often, thus causing people to grow wary of her, especially her mother. The lack of guidance made young Aurora become less and less in control of them and, out of fear or out of love, her parent's most trusted maid blindfolded the child and fled in the middle of the night with her. For the second time in her life, she was taken.

For better or worse, the maid had been brought up hearing old tales of women descending from the great serpent Goddess Coatlicue. Women that could speak to serpents and turn living beings into stone. So, she hid eight-year-old Aurora and embarked on a ship towards a small land in the new world, where it was told her that a creature as powerful as Aurora lived. A place where the young gorgon was taught more lessons of love, happiness and that her powers were a blessing, not a curse. A place where she became an Otero. Not by birth, but by the love of a sweet and caring mother. And that was all she could ask for.

In her youth, and once she became more confident in her powers, the young gorgon asked for permission to travel. Memories of her old family in Spain sometimes still came back to mind, but more than that, she wanted to see the world herself. At the early age of sixtee, she thought she was old enough to travel, that she could take care of herself, Aurora told her mother. Human diseases didn’t get to her, men were too weak to touch her without her consent and with that in mind, she was back in a ship towards the old world, to see places and people she wasn't allowed to in her childhood. By the time she arrived in Spain and was able to track her old family down, they had already died. Julián Lascaro had died in one of his trips and Ynes Lascaro had succumbed to her own mind and sent to a monastery.

When visiting England was where she met the Carrasco family. They took her under her wing for some reason, and for a few years, Aurora remained by their side, learning how to act like a proper lady her age (and hating every minute of it). One reaper and one demon later, she didn’t feel like a stranger supernatural in a human's world anymore. But then, when a couple’s quarrel broke, Aurora sided with the one person she trusted the most aside from her mother and left England to travel with a friend for a few more years.

Eventually, her heart ached for home and Aurora realized it was time to return to the warmth of her mother. When she met the Otero woman again, Rory had aged. She had allowed herself to look older in order not to call attention on herself and her supernatural nature, and now, she had plenty of stories to tell her mother for the next century or so. Stories that tucked her sisters in at night in the upcoming years, with vivid details and lots of care in them. Aurora also realized that there was little that she couldn’t remember if she focused, something people would eventually call as eidetic or photographic memory, and for the years that followed, once tragedy hit her family, she wished she hadn’t been granted such a gift. 

She wished she could forget about the time the cruel men came again and destroyed her little village, they pried her and her sisters from their mother’s loving arms and for a long, long time, their powers were used to win battles that weren’t theirs. Under their control weeks became months, months became years and years became centuries. If she were counting, she would know there had been two. Two centuries. 

When the Otero siblings managed to escape, they bore more than psychological and emotional scars. Some of them had been permanently damaged and had suffered in their own way, all because of the greed of men. 

It took her more years to build herself back up. Rory pushed others away and she bottled all the pain inside. She did what she had to do to survive, and surviving meant keeping things where others couldn’t see or touch. She had kept Juni the closest, since Perri didn’t seem to want to be around, but like the stubborn gorgon that she was, Rory still tried. She pushed buttons, she pulled strings and she remained by her sisters’ sides. Through thick and thin. She couldn’t fix what had happened to her sisters, but she could try and fix her family.

Her coming to Portum had a lot to do with her sisters and little to do with herself. She needed them, and she also needed her best friend around, so, the gorgon packed her bags and found herself a nice apartment downtown. Her dire need to help others pushed her towards start working as a firefighter, eventually becoming a lieutenant, and, in order to sink her roots deeper into Portum, she bought Spell and Bourbon from the previous owner, that being her definite attachment to the supernatural haven.

Re your mention in the book 3 trivia post of virtues in the Tarot; there's a story I heard a while back that I'm not sure of the veracity of but that's really funny if true.

Temperance is one of the 'cardinal' virtues in Christian theology, as opposed to the three 'theological' virtues. The word cardinal here has nothing to do with the position of cardinal in the Catholic church (or the bird named after that position on account of being bright red like their robes). It means fundamental or pivotal. The thinking behind this was that the virtues of Temperance, Fortitude, Justice, and Prudence were things that all civilised, halfway-decent people could understand and agree were necessary for human life, whereas a full understanding of the three Theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity supposedly required understanding of and belief in Christianity specifically.

Of course you read Screwtape so I'm guessing you've read some of CS Lewis's other theological books and know this already but I'm putting out there as background for those who don't know it. (Also, no, I'm not Christian, these aren't my beliefs, I'm just telling y'all what they said.)

Anyway. Point being; I don't know if the theological virtues were ever in the Tarot but three out of four cardinal ones are. Temperance and Justice are obvious. The Strength card is Fortitude, due to a hiccup of translation at some point, which makes it a lot clearer why most versions of the card show a woman taming a lion. Fortitude as a virtue isn't primarily about being physically resilient; it's about bravery and cool heads under pressure. That's the kind of strength it takes for a vulnerable noncombatant to face down a deadly wild beast, and stay calm and dignified about it instead of panicking.

So that just leaves Prudence. And the story I heard says; well, it was meant to be included, at one point. There was a plan for what the illustration should be, too. Prudence means exactly what it sounds like-being sensible and cautious. So, the picture was to be of a man travelling through treacherous ground like a bog, or across slippery stepping stones, and thus keeping his weight on his back foot while he tested where to step with his front.

(If you don't know what that looks like, think about how you'd walk across a floor scattered with legos in the dark. You'll get it.)

However, there was some kind of miscommunication or misunderstanding between whoever came up with that image and the artist commissioned to actually provide the pictures. Instead of drawing 'a man suspended on one foot', you see? They drew a man suspended BY one foot.

And that's how we got the Hanged Man.

Holy shit, that's fascinating! And pretty plausible to be honest, at least more so than the heavenly virtues theory - I think the biggest flaw in it being the heavenly virtues is the lack of deadly sins, since it's rare to see the seven virtues without their deadly counterparts.

They dip their hands into many different projects and fields, but their work begins and ends with, well, the beginning and end of the universe. Known for being particularly grumpy, Raskol is finally learning how to relax and be a bit more... well, fun. It's probably the Nipnip. Particularly sensitive to the v̴͔͒̕ͅo̵͓͑̉i̵̧͇͋̊d̵̗̻̆.

Hello it’s SRS once again!! Hope you’re having a beautiful week :)

These dances sound AMAZING and I love that you incorporate classic rock into the routines and that it strikes such a chord with students! You know for sure 10 years down the line one of these kids will hear come together or something and inadvertently launch into an entire choreographed routine, much to the confusion of everyone around them lol. Have you danced/taught dance for a long time or is it a newer role for you?

OK good to know about the albums!! I am growing increasingly intrigued by the monkees based on your wild & crazy tales and would LOVE some recs!! What songs/albums/etc. would you recommend to get started?

I study environmental biology! Very fun huge fan but yes the amount of extra labs etc. is crazy. I will actually need to learn R or something next semester for a biostats class but that’s a problem for later… I literally tried to download R on my computer this summer but got stuck on that for an hour and gave up 😭

I started dance when I was 2 (lol) and started teaching when I was 17!! So I’ve been teaching for a little while but not like forever lol

I think their first album is a good place to start!! It has more of a pop vibe but has some really catchy songs and sometimes gets a little psychedelic. Last Train to Clarksville was the big hit from that album. I’d also recommend listening to the soundtrack from their movie Head, the music is really really good. You probably already know I’m a Believer and Daydream Believer, so beyond that I’d recommend For Pete’s Sake, Early Morning Blues and Greens, Randy Scouse Git, Listen to the Band, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Goin’ Down, Words, Auntie’s Municipal Court, and Magnolia Simms. The four of them have such different musical influences, so I tried to get a little bit of everything here!

In all honesty, it’s mostly just that Mike is hot. (I think he’s at his hottest mid 70s through mid 80s, but he’s still really cute in the first season of the show as well. Plus in the pilot he looks so young!! Baby.) But he was also really talented and influential even though he never gets credit for it bc of the stigma against the monkees. He was a pioneer of country rock as a genre! He was a major player in the development of music video as we know it today! He created the direct predecessor of MTV and won the first Grammy for music video! He got into VR in the 90s! His mom invented Liquid Paper! The man is fantastic for trivia. On the show, he’s kind of the leader of the group, so I think that also contributes to the cult of personality. When you get into analyzing his gender and sexuality, it gets really interesting really fast. Also he’s an only child raised by a single mom, so he’s kinda sensitive in a way that resonates with me bc I’m an only child too :) But it’s very important to note that he was a complete asshole while the monkees were a thing and also he was a total dick to his first wife (Phyllis deserves so much better, she’s such a queen). So we stay #mikecritical while still thirsting over him. Oh and also his solo work is really wonderful if you’re into country :)))

Glad to be done with finals, yes! I got a 98 on my database exam, which pushed me up to an A from an A- :) I had a project that I finally turned in this past Sunday, so finals week dragged on a little longer than I would’ve liked, but I’m done now!! In January I’m gonna be spending a couple days at a friend’s house, and I haven’t seen her in several years, so I’m super excited :))) also I’m looking at taking a tap dance workshop later this month which will be lots of fun!

What’s really interesting to me about CS is the logical thinking & math aspect, like I enjoy being able to turn my people brain off and just think like the machine. It’s like a logic puzzle which is fun for me :) Plus the sense of accomplishment for having made something! Usually “making” something refers to more creative areas, so CS is kind of unique in that way. And then when your code works there’s that moment of “look!! I made it do the thing!!!”
