April Plant Challenge Day 17 aka Day 2 for me: Favourite Foliage
Now I simply couldn’t pick just one, so here are my fave four!
1. Ctenanthe Burle Marxii
2. Alocasia Polly
3. Cordyline Fructosia Mambo
4. Stromanthe Triostar (sanguinea)
In general I can’t resist green/white, green/pink and all black foliage!

Everyone grows so beautifully 💚💚💚
I'm really impressed with the marantas, I didn't expect them to take off so much right from the start. Especially the lemon lime, it arrived with 7,5 leaves 3 weeks ago and is at 10,5 leaves right now, which is just crazy. The variegated and regular kerchoveanas are really putting in some hard work too! The rhaphi cuttings are busy rooting in water now, as there were things growing in the moss that I didn't like and some cuttings were starting to rot in leca. Water so far works beautifully, though. The ZZ Raven hasn't been growing yet for me, so I decided to move it to a slightly brighter location. We'll see if that changes anything.
Not pictured here, but still updates:
Next week I'm going to plant the pothos cuttings into soil (if I get to it, but it should be quick work). Then I changed my maiden hair fern from inside the shelf to the outside in a makramee hanger, because it started to look funny and obviously wanted a little bit more light than what reached into the shelf from the north facing window. Not sure if it won't block too much light for the plants still inside the shelf (it has LARGE beautiful fronds!), maybe I'll have to figure something out for them later if it doesn't work for them. I'd put a grow light there, but there's no electricity anywhere near, so that'd be a real challenge. 😅 Anyway, the N'Joy pothos that had been in that makramee hanger now lives on the stand with the other pothos. There should be enough light for it, hopefully not too much (it's near a south facing window), but we'll see how it likes that place.

Had to repot the Fusion Whites a few days ago because mold 😫 Washed them, put them into new substrate and new pots and removed them from the terrarium. Now I'm spraying them a couple times a day to keep humidity up, but we'll see if they do well just like that. At least one of them is unrolling a new leaf and another one is growing, so that's good. The other one got quite a bit further browning on the leaves, I'm hoping it'll bounce back from all the stress 🙇
My 'problem child' (the name is escaping me right now - edit: it’s Calathea picturata) is meanwhile recovering beautifully from thrips AND spider mite infestation. Keeping this one around my desk now, it's doing so much better there. 👌 The formerly massive Stromanthe triostar I bought for work also is doing great now (no pic yet, seems like my phone didn't save it orz). It already was in a not-so-great condition when I bought it and it had lost lots and lots of leaves in the following weeks, but it seems to have adjusted to it's new environemt now ❤ It's growing it's second new leaf right now!
The minis in my home are also doing okay up to really great! The mini triostar and the mini Ctenanthe are growing, while the others are more stagnant. Maybe I'll move them to a brighter place, after all.

Ctenanthe burle-marxii, Marantaceae
I haven’t written about a tropical plant in a while, so here’s the overload of texture and colour of a Ctenanthe species grown as ground cover in one of the heated greenhouses of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. Related to the more commonly encountered, but just as attractive Calatheas, they have similar requirements, shared with many other tropical plants which grow low in the understory: bright indirect or filtered light, moderate air humidity and careful watering, appropriate for the season and the changing light levels, will keep them happy, thriving houseplants. If you live in a tropical or sub-tropical area you can grow or try to grow it outdoors, where you should place it away from open areas bathed in direct sunlight, and it can do well in containers which can be moved in the shade or indoors as necessary depending, on the temperature and humidity.
In the central photo you can see a developing flower spike, but the small white flowers which will emerge from it are not nearly as impressive as the foliage, which fully makes up for it! I haven’t been able to read about any other particular use for this plant -other than being part of its original ecosystem, which is obviously all that matters after all, whether it is of use to us or not- but I read that the leaves of Calathea are crafted into utensils by some Native People of tropical America, so the similar leaves of Ctenanthe might be used as well, but that’s just speculation.
