CtM Thursday Thoughts--Anticipation and Speculation
Hey, Nonnatuns! It’s Thursday, and while I still am trying to decide if I want to do a Character Thoughts post about Sgt Woolf, the CtM powers that be have given me a bit of break by finally releasing some concrete NEWS about the upcoming Christmas special and series 9 (see the CtM Facebook page for details). With the newest info in mind, I have lots of thoughts now! More thoughts follow:
So, we knew the CS was being filmed in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, based on one news article and a bunch of social media posts, but now there’s an official pic and description. There’s also some info about what to expect in series 9, and some of those topics make me wonder…
First, the CS–So, it’s apparently a very short-term mission led by Mother Mildred (the description says they will be back by Christmas), and doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Shelagh’s backstory. That makes sense to me, because the backstory that has been published for Shelagh (in Doctor Turner’s Casebook) says she’s from Aberdeenshire (as is Laura Main), which is on the other side of Scotland from the Outer Hebrides. Now, just because the main reason for the trip isn’t about Shelagh, that doesn’t mean there can’t still be opportunities to highlight Shelagh’s Scottish background, since she’s the only Scot in the group and so there will be potentially a point of connection there between her and the patients even if they are from different parts of Scotland (and Shelagh has lived in England for 20 years or so). Also, the trip could trigger memories for Shelagh that she is able to share in some scenes. We’ll have to see where that goes.
Also, from the pic, unless there are more people on the trip than are in the pic (as was true with the first South Africa promo pic), the ones who are going are all the non-nun midwives (Lucille, Valerie, Shelagh, Trixie, Phyllis), along with Mother Mildred, Sister Julienne, Patrick, and maybe Fred (is that Fred driving the bus? I can’t see clearly enough to tell for sure). So if that is the whole group, it does make sense to leave the other nuns back at Nonnatuns to hold down the fort, along with Miss Higgins at the surgery. Also, I didn’t really expect Sister Monica Joan to go considering her health issues. Which leads me to…
A “Major Death”?–That’s what some tabloids have been hinting at, but the press release also mentions that s9 will start with the country observing the funeral of Winston Churchill, which could count as a “major death” of an important historical figure. Still, I could also see how the show could parallel the national mourning with local mourning for a well-loved and prominent resident of Nonnatus House. Sister MJ is the most likely candidate for a major character death, but I said that before and she has outlived other characters already, including the young and seemingly healthy Barbara. Still, the show keeps making her health and mortality an issue, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the series leads off with her death. As for other major characters dying, there’s nobody else that seems like an obvious candidate. I can’t think of any actors that are doing lots of other projects or taking leaves of absence from the show (past indicators that a character might be written off), and Sister MJ did die in the CtM books, so I guess we’ll have to see what happens there. There are other health concerns, though…
“Old Diseases”–There’s a somewhat concerning part of the s9 announcement about “old diseases” that “come back to haunt” the Nonnatuns. Also, the list of issues that will be dealt with includes three that have been covered on the show before–diptheria, cancer, and (perhaps most worrying for me) tuberculosis! This makes me wonder if maybe there will be complications for Shelagh again regarding her TB. I hope not, but that thought did cross my mind when I read that post. Also, another old issue is brought up…
Nonnatus Demo Threat part 2–So, Nonnatus House is threatened with demolition again? The last time that happened (in s2), it was because the old filming location had been bought out and the show couldn’t use it anymore. The new Nonnatus is on an established filming set, as far as I understand, so I don’t think they’d be forced out in the same way, but this could just be a threat that doesn’t come to fruition this time. Or will there be a *third* Nonnatus House? Again, I guess we have to wait and see.
Well, that’s all for now. I will probably have more thoughts as more news comes to light.
So Nonnatuns, what do you think?
Next week, I’m not sure. Stay tuned!

Shelagh hasn’t been herself recently and Patrick is worried about her...
There has been a lot of speculation about Shelagh’s secret, so this comes from my thoughts about what it might be.
I hope you like this and I would love to hear what you think about it.

I’m re-watching 6.07, and I definitely some thoughts about Valerie’s secret
I’m sure it’s been said before by someone else, but it just struck me
in her speech to Trixie about secrets and fear, she says people are afraid - “Of being laughed at, or rejected, or punished ... prosecuted, even.”
Something about the inclusion of ‘prosecuted’ as well as punished makes me think she had an abortion. It seems the most likely explanation. It’s also possible she has a child somewhere she;s supporting. Or lost a child. Perhaps she had an affair during her service. She might even be gay, I guess!

Tip #1: Play Fewer Hands And Play Them Aggressively There is a limit on how many starting hands you can play before the flop in No Limit Texas Hold’em, even for the world’s best players. If you try to play too many hands, you’ll bleed away your chip stack (unless lady luck is on your side). Developing a solid preflop poker strategy is by far the easiest and fastest way to improve your bottom line. However, developing solid preflop ranges is relatively easy to do but having the discipline to stick to them is difficult. Don’t allow yourself to get impatient and play a hand not worth playing. The best approach is to play a tight range of strong and/or playable hands, and you need to play those hands aggressively. Playing all of your hands aggressively, including the more speculative ones like 7♠ 6♠ or 5♥ 5♣, allows you to disguise the strength of your actual hand. When you raise, your opponents won’t know whether you have A-A, A-K, or 7-6, which makes you super tough to play against. Tight and aggressive wins the game! In Pakistan, the word poker is wrongly associated with Gambling, instead of the sport it actually is. The whole Poker scene is very messed up, almost everyone owes money to everyone because of unethical people. We’re a community based club and we accept only ethical and genuine players. so in the recent article about ctm Christmas Special the mention a "surprise reunion" for Shelagh (pictured below)

("Meanwhile, a surprise reunion for Shelagh involves her in a deeply moving birth, and the Circus arrives in Poplar, bringing new friendships, new experiences, and an exciting adventure for Nurse Crane.")
There's been a lot of speculation about what the surprise reunion could be...
Claire Lynch, one of the costumers for the show posted this on her instagram story
("New covid safe line ups for our first day of filming!!! thank you langridge.scott!!! Good luck studio!!" Racks of what can be presumed to be clothes in white bags, hangers are labeled with names: Tony, Gloria, Medical Student, and Mr. Kenley, respectively)
Now I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up but if Shelagh’s surprise reunion is with Gloria and she gives birth then I may start crying during the Christmas Special
(I think this would also be an interesting parallel with S06E04 as we see Gloria lose her baby in that episode in addition to Val being hired as a midwife but in this Christmas Special we might see Gloria have a baby and Val will be elsewhere. This episode is going to be all kinds of fun.)

Honestly Call the Midwife is such a special show. Every episode is so rich. It furthers the plot and main character arcs while also always having a pregnancy-of-the-week with real depth and poignancy, usually adding to the main characters’ plot both directly and through subtle parallels. It’s light and funny as well as dark and real. It’s one of the few shows that makes me sob pretty much every episode. It has wonderful characters, mostly women, each with flaws and pasts and hopes for the future. It also doesn’t use the time period in which it’s set as an excuse for a lack of diversity; it has characters from all walks of life and even a loving lesbian relationship between two main characters. I just can’t express my love for it enough. It’s always such a treat at the beginning of every year to get a new series.

You will go away one day but I will not.

“This renaming of things is so crucial to possession—a spiritual padlock with the key thrown irretrievably away—that is a murder, an erasing, and it is not surprising that when people have felt themselves prey to it (conquest), among their first acts of liberation is to change their names (Rhodesia to Zimbabwe, LeRoi Jones to Amiri Baraka).” – Jamaica Kincaid
A new commissioned work by Maria Thereza Alves and Lucrecia Dalt will be presented at the Botanic Garden Berlin during CTM festival. The spatial sound installation “You Will Go Away One Day But I Will Not” considers the Western practice of using Western scientific nomenclature to name plants worldwide. The audience is invited to walk through the tropical greenhouse wearing headphones that track each user’s movements to generate individualized binaural sonic experiences. Through this immersive installation in the tropical greenhouse, Alves and Dalt attempt to open a space for the multifarious voices of the forest—organic and inorganic, human and non-human, speculative and lived—while also pointing to their silencing and erasure by European colonists.
The piece is fully reactive to one's position and movement, meaning bodies work as compositional agents—as the originator of perspectives. The complexity of Guarani thought emerges, as does its relationality to other beings and their surroundings. Yvoty mboporã pónhuregua, “You Will Go Away One Day But I Will Not” points to the beginning of a crucial mutual discussion.
The work is presented within the framework of the “Natur. Nach Humboldt” initiative, a project celebrating the 250th anniversary of Alexander von Humboldt by presenting modern perspectives on the scientist and naturalist’s holistic approach to nature. It is commissioned by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Botanic Garden & Botanical Museum Berlin, Die Junge Akademie, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, and CTM Festival, with spatial sound production from usomo | unique sonic moments.

I think the writers of CtM are going to go through with the idea of Val not being attracted to men w/ the doctors storyline. Her annoyance because of their presence in the promo was too evident. She’s showing more signs that Patsy ever did. What do you think?
I don’t particularly think they will, but it’s a fun speculation! I do love Jennifer Kirby’s facial expressions though, they’re fantastic.
I think they have a similar vibe but I think Val’s has just gone on a lot longer. There was confirmation that Patsy was into women about a little over a series after her introduction. With Val, there’s been speculation about her sexuality for several series now. I think with Patsy, the signs were more overt, but I definitely read many things Val’s said, her reactions, etc in the same way. Personally, I’d love to see some more LGBTQ+ representation and having a gay or bi working-class main character would be great, so I really do hope that a lot of the things people are reading as gay hints actually are.
#Valerie Dyer#LGBTQ+ representation#also if she is canonically L/B there are so many ways they could explore her and Lucille's relationship#platonically or romantically (then there would also be black LGBTQ+ stories though I also like Cyril but hey she could be bi but I don't wa#Anonymous

Nonnatun Christmas Special Countdown Challenge
Six months to go until the Call the Midwife Christmas Special airs, so it’s time to get your fan muscles back into shape.
Reblog this post with two predictions for the return of Poplar’s Dedicated Heroines. Make one as ridiculous as you like, and the other as “possible”as you like. For some of us, the two things are the same.

10 First Lines
The wonderful @threadsketchier tagged me for this writing meme!
List the first lines of your last 10 published stories (or whatever number you like). Look to see if there are any patterns that you notice yourself, and see if anyone else notices any!
1. “Patrick scribbled his signature on the last sheet of a stack of forms and set his pen on the desk in front of him.” (From ‘Oh, Shelagh!’ CtM)
2. “Shelagh closed the drawer with a satisfying click.” (From ‘Oh, Patrick!’ CtM)
3. “Shelagh blearily opened her eyes to the sound of Teddy’s cough.” (From ‘This too Shall Pass’ CtM)
4. “The sound of a page turning roused Shelagh to consciousness.” (From ‘Page Turner’ CtM)
5. “Clinic was busy.” (From ‘The Difference’ CtM)
6. “The baby relaxed in her arms, deeply asleep after finishing his milk.” (From ‘The Dawn of Redeeming Grace’ CtM)
7. “ “Tim’s out like a light,” Patrick said, closing the door to their bedroom as he entered.” (From ‘Well Read’ CtM)
8. “The keys on the piano are beginning to stick.” (From ‘The Spirit of a Happy Home’ CtM)
9. “Luke Skywalker raises his arm, almost as if he is going to wipe at his eye.” (From ‘More than a Jedi’ a post SW Ep 7 speculative fic (spoiler: I was wrong))
10. “He hesitates outside of the door to the bedroom, and Mara’s teeth catch on her lower lip as she squashes a hopeful smile.” (From ‘Number Six’ – Star Wars EU fic)
Hmmm…. Well, you can see my big shift from Star Wars to CtM fairly plainly. 😂😂😂😂 There were two years between publishing #10 and #9 and a year between #9 and #8 and then I’ve written 8 -1 in this past year. #10 and #7 are supposed to be somewhat spooky so I wrote them in the present tense to make them feel slightly more unbalanced. #9 is also present as well, because it was meant to be like watching the movie keep rolling (hahahaha *cries*). I think maybe what I’m taking from looking for patterns here is that most of these lines are definitive, as in ‘this is happening, now on with the fic’…. #7 cracks me up because Tim’s asleep so we know what’s going to happen with Turnadette next! 😆😆

CtM Location Filming Thoughts
This is in reference to that article I posted yesterday and some of the responses to it (thanks to all who responded!) I’m not sure if filming locations count as spoilers but just in case--mild SPOILERS and speculation for the CtM 2019 Christmas special follow:
So, the article I posted mentioned that the Christmas special will be filming in the Outer Hebrides--a group of Scottish islands. It doesn’t say anything else really, beyond mentioning a few of the specific locations. Plot-wise, there are no clues about why they would be filming there or what the story involves. It also doesn’t say which cast members will be filming there. It could be a big group like with the South Africa CS, or possibly a subplot for just a few characters.
Several people have mentioned that maybe this means we’ll get backstory for Shelagh, because they’re filming in Scotland. I had this thought, too, but I don’t think the location is a guarantee that the story involves Shelagh. At least according to Doctor Turner’s Casebook, Shelagh is from Aberdeenshire (which is also where Laura Main is from so that makes sense even if you discount the Casebook), and the Outer Hebrides are on the other side of the country from there. I suppose it’s possible that Shelagh could have relatives and/or old friends/acquaintances there, but it’s just as plausible (or maybe even more so) that she wouldn’t. She’s been in London for a long time (since the 1940s according to the show) and no mention has been made of her keeping in touch with anyone in Scotland (but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t have done so). I certainly hope that something about Shelagh’s backstory will be mentioned even if it’s not the main reason for the location filming, but I don’t think the filming necessarily means there will be.
Also, @like-an-officer-and-a-sergeant mentioned something about Patsy and Delia, who according to last Christmas special now live in Scotland. I personally think an appearance (or even a mention) is less likely than a possible Shelagh connection. This is because a) Emerald Fennell seems so busy with various projects (acting, directing, and writing) these days that I don’t think she’d have the time, and b) we don’t know where in Scotland they live. It could be anywhere. Also, I think that occasional mentions of past characters on the show is fun, but there’s really only so much time you can give to offscreen characters. As much as it would be fun to hear about them again, I’m not sure how likely this is.
Those are my thoughts at the moment. Of course, we don’t have a lot of info yet. There’s just this one article that doesn’t give a lot of info, so I hope there will be more soon (such as plot points, guest star announcements. etc.) to provide a basis for further speculation. I do hope that this plot will somehow involve Shelagh and give us some more backstory for her, but I’m not sure at this point.

CtM reflection
I woke this morning and my first thought was today is episode 8. Then I thought about the difference between the excitement of Teddy's pending birth and the funeral. I always love the eighth episodes. We have had the full range of emotion including last year which featured new life and death and love. We know that the plan is to bring us from death to new life (and it's Mother's Day not Easter). I expect that we will see lots of love.
One thing about this series that we've never seen before is that episode seven actually started the minute episode six left off and eight will start close to that. For a show when we typically analyse tiny clues just to figure out what month it is, the timeline was more evident in S7. Remember trying to figure out how long it takes to sail to So Africa?
I may be the minority, but I'm almost glad to come to the end of another series. I get tired of the spoilers and speculation. I like that we can look back on it as a whole. I hope for me it will inspire some writing, but if not I'll be here for all the hiatus fun. Just think they'll be back to filming any day now!
Enjoy episode 8 Nonnantuns. Happy Mother's Day to UK mums. Not sure who you all are... I know you are a mum @mg-bsl381 Have a happy day! If you are a UK daughter, enjoy your mum. For those whose mum is no longer with them, I'm sending hugs.

Thank you so much @ilovemushystuff for sharing.
As @fourteen-teacups pointed out, at least we have the return of a recurring if not elusive character in the order's scooter.
I have that sense of foreboding I always get this time of year when the CtM press releases start to appear and speculation goes into overdrive. Sometimes justified, often not.
I try to avoid the obvious spoiler under the line, but it's a long time until Christmas.
No offense to Ms Gethings, but I'm hoping this is another Magda/ Kevin. We all get excited about a new character that the Turners see off in 2 episodes.
Fenella Woolgar's absence in the media and in bts footage has been noted and is causing concern. According to her wiki page, she is currently filming another series. So as a wise woman once said, We Shall See.
Part of the magic of CtM for me has always been the generational mix. My favourite friendship was between Phyllis and Barbara. There has always been that balance of youth and maturity. That focus on the 3 or 4 eager young midwives tempered under the gaze of the more experienced nuns later joined by Nurse Crane.
I think the show has lost that reassuring balance. Lucille is now married and Trixie is who knows? (Yes, I think we all do) That leaves Nancy, who spends most of the time being patronised. Her only peer group pal is Sister Frances, who is funny, engaging and a valuable character, but not really someone who reflects the swinging sixties or early 70s.
There seemed to be a few series where it was all nurses and no nuns. Now we are no nurses and all nuns. As someone aged somewhere between Trixie /Shelagh and Sister Hilda/Phyllis, I would like to see more Nancys.

Rebecca Gethings as Sister Veronica with her moped
She arrives in the first episode.
Heidi Thomas:
#call the midwife#al goes off on one#don't you just love this time of year#it's speculation time again

CTM CS 2017 Thoughts (aka me getting on my soapbox for a lil bit about all things plot- and character-development-related, regarding all storylines, relationships, and sexualities)
Hi loves -
I know there are lots of opinions on the Christmas Special floating around the wonderful world of tumblr, and I respect all of them, and I’d like to add mine to the mix. They are quite long, as you’ll probably notice. Feel free to agree, disagree, or ignore them completely!
First off, my general impression: it was a lovely episode, but with a little less substance than usual. I think they tried to do too much in one ep, and I didn’t feel as connected to the individual storylines of Linda and Mabel - however heartbreaking and impactful they may have been at certain parts. Also, we’ve seen the Christmas-pageant-gone-to-ruins-and-miraculously-resurrected plot one too many times, I believe, and though the final part of the episode was fun, I felt there was a missed opportunity to do something a little different.
Regarding Linda’s story, I thought Vanessa Kirby did a fantastic job displaying the rollercoaster of emotions that that birth involved - both before and after the baby was born. I’m really excited to see what’s in store for Val this season - as we still haven’t learned what her secret is (my guess is she might have had an abortion or a baby out of wedlock that she had to give up, but that’s just wild speculation), and I think Vanessa will do wonderfully well with whatever Heidi gives her. The actress playing Linda was also brilliant, and I had a huge lump in my throat during the whole stillbirth process. I absolutely lost it when the baby started crying in Val’s bag. It was well done for the most part, but as I mentioned before, it was a little difficult to get as invested in Linda’s character because the episode seemed so all over the place in terms of focusing on the recurring characters’ personal lives and rescuing the ill-fated Christmas fête.
Mabel’s plot also somewhat fell victim to this phenomenon, and I wasn’t particularly convinced that Sister J’s handling of the situation was the right thing. Let me preface this by saying that, thankfully, I have never experienced physical or emotional abuse, and I have never been in a situation of support for someone who has, so I am no authority on how to be the best source of support to someone who has suffered something like Mabel and Anthea did. That being said, I found Sister J’s treatment of Anthea to be less than helpful, in that she pushed her to face the demons of her past with such immediacy in an already emotional time. While the reunion of mother and daughter was one that I was glad to see happen, it seemed like Sister J tried to push it on Anthea too soon, and her last remark about Anthea’s family seemed almost to guilt her into seeing her mother again. I don’t believe Anthea was given enough time to process the death of her father and the emotions that brought up again for her, and I think Sister J could have given her more of that time and not used guilt as a tactic to promote her own idea of what reconciliation looked like. As ever, though, I admire CTM’s willingness not to sugarcoat the horrors of domestic abuse and other all-too-common nightmares that people endure in their daily lives, especially in a culture that has become so inured to the existence and impact of sexual assault - something that is rightfully and courageously being challenged by so many people of all genders, and I hope will continue to be so.
The Turners were just a joy (other than Patrick being a bit of a shit who can’t do much without the women in his life). The kids are growing up beautifully, and watching Shelagh with Teddy was like a dream come true. (Watching Shelagh trying to get that girdle on, on the other hand, was a nightmare, but a raucously hilarious one. Laura Main deserves a BAFTA for those twenty seconds alone.)
As for Babs and Tom, I think they’re lovely together, and I just adored Babs’ little hat. She is such a gem. She spreads sunshine wherever she goes, and she makes a great vicar’s wife. Do I sometimes wish she’d branched out a bit and had some more single adventures? Sure I do. But she and Tom seem happy, and I’ll miss her terribly (if not him - I’ve always found him very blah personality-wise, if somewhat pleasant to look at) during her time away.
Trixie is a lovely Nonnatus stalwart, as always, but I fear Christopher is just another Tom - lovely face, but not much beyond handsomeness and chivalry. Am I happy that the female characters in this show are more nuanced than the male ones? Of course I am; that’s as it should be in a show about female power, strength, and love, and I’ve always considered it a point of pride that this show passes the Bechdel test with flying colors. Still, I wonder what this relationship adds to the series if it’s not an escape route for Helen, should she want to take time off - whether to care for her and Jack’s new adorable baby, or to do other projects. Additionally - and this may be overthinking it - I was a little concerned about how much Trix was talking about her own appearance relative to what she thought Christopher wanted. It called to mind the episode with Cathleen Baker, the gal with varicose veins, and I don’t want Trix to dissolve into self-consciousness like that when she’s always been a woman who’s found her looks a source of confidence and independence rather than the sole sign of her worth. That was just a knee-jerk thing in a couple of scenes, but I was happy she was such a great support for Val - as was Sister MJ (of whom I wish we could have seen a little more).
Phyllis Crane. God bless the woman. She was essential as always, and I loved her fingerless gloves. So comfy and stylin’. My snobby ass thought her cop adversary was a bit too much of a caricature, but I was glad to see she’s heading the rota/appointments - not to mention the Cubs - in as fine a fettle as she ever has. Fred and Reggie made for fantastic helpers (especially Reggie in his fabulous hat). Four for you, Phyllis; you go, Phyllis.
Now for the big one - the issue of the missing characters. I’d like to start with Sister Mary Cynthia, whom I missed dearly. With all the buzz about Emerald and Kate (which I’ll get to later, believe me - if you’ve made it this far, I applaud and thank you for dealing with my ramblings), I wasn’t sure if Bryony would be returning this season or if she’d moved onto other projects. For those who might not know, the BBC offers three-year contracts, so the end of the sixth series provided an opportunity for people to take other gigs if they wished to do so. Whether or not Sister MC will be back in this series, I would have liked to have heard a mention of her progress at Northfield, since Heidi and the other writers - not to mention Bryony herself - did such an incredible job of portraying her mental illness and giving that kind of visibility onscreen last season. I think it is important to give some sort of update on her recovery while recognizing that one never truly recovers from the scars that mental illness leaves, though much healing is possible.
In the same vein, we come to Pats and Deels. My darling, darling lesbians. Though I knew that both Emerald and Kate had moved on to other projects - and bully for them - it still came as a blow not to see them in the CS. As with Sister MC, there was a strange gap (not to mention that we haven’t heard hide nor hare from Chummy in donkey’s years), and I was truly disappointed that there was no mention made of where their characters had gone. However, I do not hold with the idea that CTM is being homophobic or participating in queer-baiting. As a queer woman who began watching this series as an unconsciously questioning high-schooler in 2013 - during series two when there was no whiff of gayness to be had - I recognize the value of this show beyond its representation of queer visibility; yet I also acknowledge that, when that visibility did appear, it was instrumental to my understanding of my own sexuality and my ability to come to terms with and to celebrate it as something beautiful, right, and true - even when people I love in my life may not have done so. (Never mind the fact that Emerald - in combination with Dana Scully - finally hit me over the head re my penchant for redheads with perfect skin, cut-glass cheekbones, and an appreciation for a well-tapered pair of slacks).
Please take those rambling sentences to mean that, while I adored Pats’ and Deels’ onscreen relationship and will miss it terribly, the show communicates many messages beyond those sent by that relationship. This program offers beautifully told and righteously argued forms of social commentary, and above all, it is an ensemble show. There is no one central character or relationship, and the writers do their best to balance all of the storylines equally - regarding characters’ personal and professional lives. Would I have liked to have seen more than a kiss from Pats and Deels? Of course I would have, because I’m a deviant heathen who loves a little lady-lovin’ where I can get it. However, do I recognize that it was the 60s and that this show’s primary demographic is fairly geriatric, so representation had to be limited to a certain degree? Of course I do. I think both Pats and Deels were wonderful and nuanced characters - both together and apart - and the writers and actresses did a wonderful job in terms of queer visibility onscreen, even if they could have given us a bit more closure on where the characters had moved on to in the CS.
Which brings me to the question of Val as “the new gay one.” Do I think it would be fabulous if Val turned out to be gay? Absolutely I do. Everything is better when it’s gayer (though every form of relationship and sexuality is valid!). However, do I believe she’s a nuanced character in and of herself who provides an opportunity to bring more visibility of underrepresented forms of identity and background to the fore? Absolutely I do. I don’t feel that queer visibility is an obligation, a chore to be carried out and dispensed with once it’s filled its quota, or brought in just to fill a gap. It should be something that arises as organically as possible because it is something natural, something ever-present no matter the time period, and it should be represented in an honest, true, and - when possible - celebratory way. I do not think Val should simply “replace” the queer element in the show for the sake of filling a perceived void. I’m excited to see what happens with her character this season, irrespective of her sexual proclivities. I’m also excited to meet our new midwife, as she might provide a more regular perspective from a woman of color on the show and remind us of even more ways we can learn from our history and take action to ensure its darkest moments find no repetition in the light of today.
Okay - getting off my soapbox now. I had a lot of feelings about this episode, so thank you for listening (if you, by some miracle, made it down to the bottom, for which I adore you). Would love to hear your thoughts about any of this, and looking forward to seeing what pops up in the tag from all of you. Love to everyone, and excited for the rest of the series to come!

His Three Miracles (Turner Family Fanfiction)
Finally finished with my 1st fic of 2018, this one took me a lot longer than I expected. After this fic I will be focusing on my speculation fics for the upcoming series of CTM. I have written a fic in a similar format about Shelagh and it is called “Here Is Love”
This fic is inspired by this passage from Doctor Turner’s Casebook referring to Patrick’s time at Northfield:
“I joined a small group of patients who helped out at a local child guidance clinic twice a week. The chaps would make toys, mend lights and offer extra pairs of hands to the nurses tending the mothers and children. I’d occasionally be invited to help wash the babies. When you wash an infant, there’s a serenity to it – a trust in eyes that have yet to know judgement or prejudice. Their innocence is a challenge to your despair – a timeless invitation to commune with life’s possibilities, and not its fears. The more I washed those blameless little faces, the less blame I felt. Their companionship was the most merciful psychiatry.”
- Stephen McGann pg. 249
Hope you all enjoy!!
Fall 1947
Patrick lowered his baby son into the tub that night as Marianne went to the master bedroom to get ready to bed. He liked to bathe Timothy and put him in his crib when he got off of work in time to give her a break. She was surprised at how well he was at giving Timothy a bath. She just assumed he was so good at it from his profession, but he could never bring himself to tell her the truth. He tried to not think of his time at Northfield, but it occupied his mind occasionally on hard days at the surgery and briefly at Timothy’s bath time. However Timothy’s giggles as he rinsed him off made any bad thoughts of his past fade away. He couldn’t believe that this was his life, three years ago he would have never had thought that it was possible to find happiness in life again. He was able to find love after the darkness of the war and now he had a son to add to the joy he had found since his departure from Northfield. Patrick dried him off and clothed him.
He took Timothy to his crib and whispered “Goodnight I love you” as he sat him down. After a few restless moments, Patrick smiled and breathed a sigh of relief as he drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
December 1959
After losing Marianne, Patrick thought that Timothy would be his only child. He couldn’t picture himself ever wanting to remarry in the early months after his great loss. But then after a whirlwind of events his unforeseen, silent love for Sister Bernadette blossomed into a marriage filled with elation to Shelagh Turner. The prospect of becoming a father again became a real and likely scenario at the time, but it all came crashing down the day scar tissue was found on her pelvic organs. It hurt him to know that they could not have a child, but he knew Shelagh’s pain was even deeper. When she suggested adoption, the idea of their dream still coming true excited him. However when he saw how detailed the paperwork was he feared that his time at Northfield would be revealed, which lead him to discourage Shelagh from the Church of England Children’s Society. He reluctantly filled out the forms because he didn’t want to crush her dreams again. Things backfired terribly when the interview fell apart and his past with Northfield came to the harsh light. Shelagh was mad at him when he wouldn’t elaborate about it, but he had to keep it behind him to stay sane. The deep, dark sadness welled up in him and before he knew it he was just going through the daily motions of life, with no room to feel anything else. Days passed and his marriage was suffering from the tension that filled their home. Then he realized that silence didn’t help him in his recovery from war neurosis and it wasn’t helping his marriage right now either and he knew he needed to speak. With all the courage he could muster he started the conversation as she was sewing and apologized for everything. She apologized too and they made a promise to one another to commutate more openly. Not long after that Angela entered their lives bringing great joy to their lives and all the tension and dark thoughts vanished from their home.
He smiled as he washed her that cold December night. Even though they were not related by blood, he had the same intense love for her as he did for Timothy. He rinsed her off, lifted her out of the bath and wrapped her in a towel. He chuckled has she started to cry, she never liked it when bath time ended and the cold air hit her skin. She squirmed as he put her nappy and outfit back on and her crying did not stop. He scooped her up and patted her on the back pacing the sitting room. Just as he was about to get Shelagh to help him calm her she finally let up. He kissed her head and swayed her until she feel asleep in his arms. The warm feeling of holding his sleeping infant daughter would never get old.
November 1962
Patrick watched as Shelagh bathed Teddy with Angela and Timothy helping her. The sun was shining in the room and life could not have been more perfect that late afternoon. He was content with their family before the addition of Teddy, but part of him never lost hope and the day Shelagh told him that she was pregnant was one of the happiest days of his life. His hidden hope soared that day, but just when they thought they were in the clear, Shelagh had some bleeding and their hope was almost shattered. He tried his hardest to be strong for her during her hospital stay despite the uncertainties eating him on the inside. A wave of excitement and relief hit him all at once the day they were able to hear Teddy’s heartbeat for the first time, it was one of the best sounds he had ever heard. He looked over Shelagh’s shoulder and was beaming as they continued to wash him, thinking of how lucky he was to have them in his life.
Patrick Turner has three little miracles. When he thought that he could never be loved again after his war neurosis he met Marianne and they got married which lead to Timothy’s arrival shortly after. When he thought that him and Shelagh would get rejected as adoptive parents they got an acceptance letter in the mail that lead to Angela entering their lives and strengthening their marriage. They were told they could not have a child biologically but then something changed and their physical love lead Shelagh to become pregnant with Teddy. The last eighteen years for him had a lot of ups and downs, but no matter what he knew he had his family and would never be alone.
