It’s still #StarWarsDay so the #MayThe4th celebrations continue. We all know how much more I love the Germans now after meeting them at Curling Night In America and #WMCC2022 and while none of them have dead ringer lookalikes in the #StarWars universe in the way that 🐐 Niklas Edin looks like Ewan McGregor (see previous post), the Germans are actually the more fandom appropriate curling team for today since my friends and I dressed up as #BabyYoda to cheer them on in Las Vegas (amazing how far “but it’s my birthday trip” can go when your friends really know and love you). The force wasn’t just with @teamtotzek that draw, they scored THREE 3-enders that game! Tonight’s episode of #CurlingNightInAmerica features the second USA vs GER game between Team Shuster and @teamkapp #TeamKapp may be quite young (junior team from #Oberstdorf #Germany ) but they’re certainly quite talented and gave the reigning Olympic champs a good run for their money. . . All the episodes of #CNIA were filmed in Irvine at the end of August over the course of 3 days (3 draws per day). This particular episode was filmed at 10am on Friday. I was with a couple of other @curlsandiego members in our fries hats (which I crocheted myself) and curling goat shirts. I have purposely held off on posting a lot of pics, especially spoilery ones. We didn’t sign NDAs, but I’ve kept quiet especially about the results of the games. . . Team Kapp definitely needs to be on the list of up and coming teams to watch. Commentators basically said Ben Kapp has great #curling genes given his dad & uncle’s history of success, but after seeing this team in action in Irvine, I’m convinced Ben will rack up quite a resume himself, they recently won the EJCT event in Oslo. . . Overheard at #CurlingNightInAmerica taping: Have you heard about @beadzbydre ? Not only do I own #BeadzbyDre I gifted 2 of them to 🐐 @niklasedin & he wore them throughout #WMCC2021 *fangirl squee* The #curlingGOAT has both the Keystone (originally designed by Dreylin in honor of Kaitlyn Lawes) and the Ali (first bracelet Dreylin designed). I like to wear the Ali and Keystone bracelets together w/ the Beach. I highly recommend folks check out BeadzByDre to find out more about the history of both the bracelets & their designer, especially if you want to support a young man while channeling your inner curling legend. With or without #NikEdinsHat . . Word of warning for international folks since BeadzByDre is based in Canada: I ordered my #bracelets on March 16th intending for them to be a birthday present for myself (my birthday is April 1st) and Nik’s bracelets timed for Worlds which he received w/o incident. Unfortunately, the first shipment got lost so I didn’t get the replacement bracelets until 2 months later and only after Dreylin contacted FedEx. I guess better late than never - I still mourn the loss of the Team Kevin Koe toque I won on FB last year that you can’t buy anywhere that I never received, presumably due to C19 related international shipping issues (I won something in the Sandra Schmirler Foundation auction after the Brier/Scotties that was a full month delayed and only after the foundation opened an inquiry w/ the shipping company). . . Olympic gold medalist Matt Hamilton not only knows about BeadzByDre but was also seen wearing one of the bracelets during CNIA. I actually had a funny moment w/ the legendary Sue Cassidy in the bathroom in Irvine of all places. We were washing our hands and she asked if I knew about the bracelets so I showed her my wrist. Thank you #TeamCanada for taking a pic with me after your game and the lovely chat reminding me that even if I feel like I’m a terrible curler that it’s okay as long as I’m having fun. That reminder certainly resonated w/ me as I deal w/ my frustrations to get better in general, finding consistent teammates I can skip, and hopefully a team to #bonspiel with and maybe a #mixeddoubles partner who’ll gladly sweep all of his stones and mine LOL. One of the perks of working in #healthcare is that I’ve been #fullyvacinnated since February 3rd, long before many others even had access to the first dose. Nevertheless, I still wear my #mask whenever I’m in public, especially when I go to places where there’s a lot of people I don’t know, like #CurlingNightInAmerica and even when I’m around fellow #fullyvaxxed folks. In fact, we’re not allowed to leave our offices w/o a #facecovering I’m glad I have my own office, albeit a small one, because I can remove my mask during the work day as I stay inside and have my door closed. Our lunch rooms in our various sites (40+) are closed - they removed the chairs and tables so people wouldn’t congregate sans masks. We are also strongly advised to avoid any out of state travel out of an abundance of caution amide the rise of variants. One of the things I noticed during Day 1 of #CNIA taping is that a majority of folks were not masked. The venue had a sign saying masks required if not fully vaccinated, however, there was no checking of vaccination status or temperatures upon entering the building so people can just walk in maskless. That’s a risk I’m not willing to take. I didn’t spend so much time and money studying #publichealth at the Keck School of Medicine in grad school to just be careless about basic public health safety measures amid a pandemic. We should normalize people continuing to wear masks indoors because it makes them more comfortable to be in a public setting rather than look at them with judgment or fear or disgust or whatever weird vibes people were sending my way yesterday because I had a mask on. I’m still planning on sporting a mask today and tomorrow both for safety and for promotion purposes. Bummed that @teamniklasedin ‘s run at the #MeridianCanadianOpen #GSOC came to an end last night. goatniklasedin has one horse less in the #fantasycurling race & my chances of finishing in the top 50 after a strong start are looking slimmer & slimmer unlike my waist. I’m so excited for #NBCSN #CurlingNight in America. I wish I could attend the event taping in person later this month in #Chaska but given my back issues right now, traveling by plane or long car trips are out of the question, even if I could afford to travel across the country and get the days off work... • As some of you may know, I’ve now become such a huge #curling #fangirl much to the annoyance of some people who probably wish I would just shut up about my curling obsession and go away from social media, but I digress.... #fangirlproblems • With #TeamShuster ’s win at the Olympics, I really hope more people in the US would get into curling. It certainly worked for me - I’m a paid member of my local curling club.
