Thank you today's BandCamp metal releases article for this delightful gift. Grinning all the way through the album. There is a song called ELEPHANTRY. There is another song called WIZ'RD'S HAT.

the California artist known as Abysmal Specter has created his own strange world in the hinterlands where raw black metal and dungeon synth meet.

Accordion, bagpipes, tin whistle, violin, saxophone, banjo, shawm, hurdy-gurdy, and bouzouki all join the fray alongside the Specter’s jagged guitar, chintzy synths, programmed drums, and croaked vocals.

Sorcerer music. Exceptional bass. More metal should have accordion. Appropriates Europop culture by having a croaky metal man voice and clean high female vocals.

Bandcamp Wrapped: What are three of your favorite purchases this year?

As always thank you for finding a way to include the iPod Haver in Spotify Wrapped, so:

Hope is Heavy, from Acid Magus. They actually put out a lyric video for A Planet, A Deathstar off that album last night.

Acid Magus is really doing the psychedelic rock/prog metal crossover right. I think I still prefer Wyrd Syster but this album comes with a seven minute reimagination of the first three Wyrd Syster tracks if you buy it so, I mean. I'm not complaining.

catharsis from Covet. We all love Covet, impossibly talented math rockers who always hit, this album is a really cool dreamy interminable flowing thing. Pull track for this album is definitely vanquish.

Curta'n Wall's Siege Ubsessed! is one of those things you start listening to as a bit, a goof, look at this funny ren-faire-ass music, and then discover you have had it on loop for three days. Genuinely having a hard time picking a pull track, but here's A New Castle is Born which I think covers the vibes.

Curta'n Wall is an alias of Abysmal Specter, the guy who started Grime Stone Records. A lot of Grime Stone leans too lo-fi for my taste, but if you like dungeon synth they're really worth following.

Before you ask, yes I know that Mitski and Sufjan Stevens released albums this year! I'm gonna go ahead and assume they're already on a lot of other people's lists! However, if you think I'm missing out on YOUR favourite album of 2023, let me know. If you're thinking: "63 albums isn't that many, I wish there were more" - you're in luck because there's a Part 2. Part 2 has a different (more pop? upbeat? accessible?) vibe. Don't think too hard about it...
