Custom lettering based on Eurostyle

So there is this title card for Falke before you fight her. And the font rose engine used there always fascinated me. Unfortunately the font can’t be found in the game files. So I decided it would be a fun project to take those five letters and reverse-engineer the font.

So I knew the font was based on a Transitional Serif form principle due to the rounded transitions between stem and serif. I had the dimensions for vertical and horizontal stems. Unfortunately I there was not a single round letter (O, U, Q, C, S, G), so I had to come up with my own idea how to the them. I decided to go for a pronounced shadow axis as the straight axis didn’t sit right with me. I mean, isn’t the game full of queer characters? ; )

When I looked through the game files at a later point I found this image. Well, turns out I guessed wrong with round shapes. They are a lot more straight then I designed mine : / I also learned that the style is probably inspired by the graphic design used in Neon Genesis Evangelion. There they just squashed and stretched Times New Roman or something adjacent. That is probably also the reason why the font wasn’t showing up in the game files.

Anyway, I still like the outcome and will continue working on it.

I also used this in a book layout and really liked it.

it's pretty obvious at this point that i will go to insane lengths just to yoink a font i like, but i think i have reached a new record (opening up the firefox developer tools and typing in whatever chinese phrases come to mind into the font testing box in order to carefully gather all 28,954 glyphs in 133-glyph chunks that the network serves me that i will then have to laboriously combine into one font file with my font editor)

I made this as the documentation for my BA thesis.

Though I studied design I never really got good at creating professional product shots : ( It taunts me, but I keep telling myself that this probably has its own charm.

What up, tumblr? Hey, remember that font I made based on that one thing from that one Karate Bugmen show? Of course you do, I posted that like two days ago. Well, I said in that post I might update it eventually, and I did!

Week 10: Ideas and Inspiration

Inspiration: During the development of my poster, I reached a point where I was very unsure about how to move forward. To spark new ideas, I researched different design approaches, and came across these custom typeface designs with stood out to me. I was immediately inspired and I knew I wanted to explore a similar direction to push my work further and add a new layer of depth to my work.

My work: This is the outcome of my custom typefaces, which I feel were successful, although the process was definitely time consuming and required a lot of patience. I’m also not entirely sure if I’ll use these in my final poster, but creating them pushed me to think more creatively and experiment more freely throughout my poster developments. It was a valuable part of the process that helped me explore new visual ideas.
