Hello, everyone—CHAOS_FANTAZY here, former entrant and judge to the Undertale/Deltarune Sprite Comic contest. It's been a while since the previous one hosted in 2021, but I've been thinking about running this contest again ever since.

So why not now?

As of right now, I've reopened the official contest Discord server in preparation for the 3rd """annual""" comic contest—slated to run throughout the summer, with the submission period running from June through August. I'm making this post to inform everyone of the contest's return, with all the general information given below:

Huh? What? Sprite Comic Contest? I don't understand anything!

A sprite comic, as its name suggests, is a web comic that uses sprites rather than artwork as the main means of depicting its subjects. This is commonly done to produce fan comics for video games, and Undertale is no exception—many prolific AUs, including @invertedfate, began as sprite comics.

This is a contest to produce a sprite comic about Undertale or Deltarune—a game jam but with comics, as it were. If you've ever had an idea for a story you want to tell using these games' characters or setting, but could never justify dedicating time to telling it...this is the excuse you need!

Who's running this show now?

As aforementioned, it's me, CHAOS_FANTAZY! I'm joined by a panel of three volunteer judges, Mufeet, Subna, and Soufon (Whom, much like myself, has no major social media platforms). All four of us are not only long-time Undertale fans who can remember when sprite comics were a highly popular storytelling format, but also participants in previous sprite comic contests!

What's in it for me?

Although he's no longer directly involved in running the contest, the former host @fmsdraws has graciously offered to supply it with illustrated prizes. Additionally, we have a small cash prize pool to distribute among the top three (Via Paypal/Cashapp, or an alternative if both of these are unavailable to the winner):

First place will receive $25, and a custom illustration with up to two characters from Fms.

Second place will receive $15, and a one-character custom illustration from Fms.

Third place will receive $10, and a custom sprite from Fms.

Additional prizes may be added to this pool over the next week or so; this post will be edited to reflect these changes.

How do I participate?

I'm glad you asked! Our official Discord server is not only the proper avenue to send a submission, it also contains all the official rules regarding the production and submission thereof. (The original contest's rules are here, but there have been some revisions and modernizations made since.)

As aforementioned, the contest is planned to run through August—make sure you get your submission in by 11:59 PM EST on August 31st!

I've been chugging away at an Undertale Ren'Py template for the free jam starter pack! It’s customized to fit the Undertale theme and the code is divided to make things easier to find.

Originally I was going to use image buttons for the quick menu in the textbox. But I realized that I liked the way the text buttons looked a lot more ^^;

Right now I'm considering adding a CG gallery to the template that can be turned on or off. We'll see!

I've been wanting to finally make full refs of my interpretations of Frisk and Chara from Undertale! This is a continuation of the the refs I made two months ago of my human soul designs right here!

I have spent nearly nine years at this point drawing these two kids haha, and I think I have finally nailed down how I want to draw them. But who knows I might always end up changing them again lmao.

Blooming Panic it's Discord but with hot characters, a variety of side characters, a cute story, and Chat GBT but it's a sentient being. I think the last part spoiled one of the routes... oopsies :3

Bonely Hearts Club (Undertale AU Dating sim) They basically become your neighbour. The AUs in this are Undertale, Underfell, Underswap, Swapfell!Indigo and Horrortale! {it's still in its demo stages but it is very well made!}

Error 143 you, an adorkable hacker (who is your rival and you're salty about it), cheesy Romeo and Juliet dream the MC has but it has a high school twist to it

I love you! You like asparagus. ...oh! You also have an option to make multiple boys fall in love with you. By the way, did you know the MC (you) loves asparagus? There are friendship routes, romance routes, and a bad ending except it's not bad. This game is the English translated version of the original game (The original game is in Japanese. The link for the original game is here --> ❤️)

Killer Trait You get accused of committing a murder, and you team up with a person who is a serial killer himself. (The serial killer in question only kills criminals so... I think you're safe...?) Your bear cream bun gets run over :( {The game is still in its demo stages. The creator of the game announced that this game will NOT be completed during 2024 since they are currently concentrating on a different game. DO NOT ASK THEM "Oh! But can't you just do this game first?". IT'S VERY ANNOYING, ESPECIALLY TO THE CREATOR}

KLEIN V.01 "Just Monika" but Yandere isn't named Monika, nor are they human. They are an AI. A fucking AI. Like bro, I understand it's hard to talk to people but really? An AI Boyfriend app that tells you to ruin your sleep schedule for him? An AI Boyfriend app that hacks your phone? An AI Boyfriend app that KILLS one of your family members and almost kills your neighbour??? RED FLAG. RED FLAGS EVERYWHERE {this game is in its demo stages. The creator is slowly updating this game in chapters, so it might take a while to finish}

Light the Way (Luxiem fangame) The game remembers what you did. All of the hearts you've broken, your sins, and your actions. There are lots of achievements, memes, Romance, friendship and BAD ROUTES. This time, the bad endings actually hurt. 0/10 would not recommend doing the bad routes unless you want to be stalked by an alter ego of Yamino Shu :(

Obey Me (Original and Nightbringer ver) Original - You become the therapist of many men with trauma and insecurities. The men in question are fucking demons that have the power to shred you into grated cheese, but they instead decide to simp over you as the story goes on. (also did I mention that you'll die? No? Oh fuck-) Nightbringer - A continuation (?) of the Original Obey Me but in a completely different universe. That's right! You slip into the past, way before the main story happens, WAY before you were even born! Idk if there is a way to go home but hey! At least you have your wizard friend from your timeline with you :D

Our Life (Now and Forever & Beginnings and always) Both stories consist of you growing up with your love interest since childhood. There are many paths to take, lots of assets to use to customize your character, and many side stories for you to read! Personally, this is one of my favourites :D (Our Life: Beginnings and Always is complete but Our Life: Now and Forever is still in development!)

Please don't hate Christmas A Yandere x Christmas x Urban Legend Otome game. Do you like Paranormal stuff? Do you like lore that connects with the story? Are you alright with MCs with a sprite that is impossible to remove from the screen? Well, look no further! This game is perfect for you! (by the way, the whole game was made by the creator. Only by themself! Even the CGs and character sprites!! Isn't that amazing!?)

Saint Spell's Love Guide A normal week of magical school... you can be friends with someone, or fall in love with them. Wait... there's lots of CGs for each character? Complicated world-building and lore!?? Angst and cruel bad endings!!?? SHROOMS!?!?!? {Oh by the way, there's multiple ways to get killed in this game. Just make sure to be careful sweetie :3}

Where Winter Crows go A crow and a scientist named Crowe... cute Another one of my other personal favourites! The love interest is a very squeezable and adorable (yandere) scientist who cooks you good food :D All of the endings are well-written! And if you're a crazy bitch like me, you'll love one of the endings >:)

In an alternative universe where Earthbound 64 and Super Mario RPG 2 merged development

I'm supposing in the context of this version, the Star Spirits serve as the guardians of the needles instead, but instead of vanishing they are freed upon each needle? And maybe you encounter the Masked Man much more often as a result.

Don't ask why Lucas has Goombario as his partner tho lol, too lazy to make a custom partner even though partners based on chimeras would be cute.

Paper Mario assets other than character sprites are a lot harder to come by than Undertale, probably because of its use of 3d backgrounds, so I had to edit screenshots I took from a playthrough to make these. Things aren't gonna look perfect and resolution is low as a result unfortunately. In addition, I struggled to replicate the smoothing effect seen in-game. (and finally: nobody seems to know let alone have the font used in the original Paper Mario, so I used Hey Gorgeous, which mimics the font used in TTYD)

That said, I'm proud of my sprite work if nothing else. I wanted to make more, but this already took a lot of work.

Hello there, have you ever wanted to play as Paper Axis? Well now you can!

Introducing Paper Axis from Undertale Yellow! After a long while he was finally added to SBRP on Roblox! If you don't know what SBRP is I'll tell ya!

(Also major credit to Solar_Laces on Discord who created Paper Clover and their sprites!!!)

SBRP (short for: Story Book Role Play) is a Paper Mario RP game on Roblox where you can play as any character from Paper Mario! (as well as some custom made characters from other franchises you can play as)

Prince Asriel Dreemurr as seen in the flashback portions of my comic. As you can see, 9 year old Asriel in the Dark World is basically his God of Hyperdeath robe from Undertale. Figured it be cool to have something that would build up to what would eventually be his boss battle in the game.

Also included is a comparison sheet to show the difference between my interpretation of Undertale's Asriel and the design I created specifically for the AU. This replaces an older version I made previously here.

In a nutshell: Age 9: Wholesome Cinnamon Roll you come to know and love! Age 12: Edgy Goat Boi, Angy Nerd. Totally not a phase!

UPDATE: Added a sprite sheet. It's an edit of the original sprites from Undertale for Kingdom of Hometown. Includes a few inspired by Ralsei.

I also used an existing custom Asriel sprite sheet I found online as a reference. Unfortunately it seems the original source is gone for some reason so sadly, I can't link back to it :(

Fortunately , there are other custom sheets still floating around that I also used that helped me make these edits.

Heya!

Since I LOVE your idea of a fight game for undertale, I wanted to add or help you with something.

At first I thought of maby suggesting a new fighter (a oc of mine), buuut I realised that you would probably have said no at any oc...

Soooo, I thought of the idea of skins!

So, Could I make some skins for the skele-fighters in the game? (Probably at least 1 per Fighter)

Because I have a lot of ideas, like for examples: for fresh fell fresh, for error anti-error, for ice-cream sans it can be cherry sans and my chocolate sans, for killer sans it can be my hades sans, and so on :3

What do you say? Is it a good idea or nah? =)

Skins are a great idea.

I was actually thinking that could be a good practical way to slip alts of AUs in there (all the different designs/iterations of Error in common use for example). I think I’d wanna keep it to the bigger ones that the most fans would recognize, though.

However! I’m dead set on attempting to make a custom character feature so you can absolutely play as your own ocs (or as close as can be done within reason). And modding would probably be possible.

If you’re legit offering to help with sprite work later on, I’d love to keep you in mind. There will be a lot of it, if this project gets that far.

July-June Dev log. We're really going places! (This Dev Log has been delayed since July. We are sorry it took so long)!

A New Face?

Yep! Let me introduce you to a new UTBB character; Princess(?) Emily Emerald!

Emerald is a spider monster that you will be familied with in the demo and through out the story. She lives in the Ruined sewers with the rest of her sibling, maybe you'll even get to meet a few of them

As of writing this, our custom base UT engine is almost complete! We only need to work on a few thing regarding the battle & overworld system. After that we will start implementing some changes such as adding out reworked magic system and a few new special changes.

Then we'll get to work on rooms, tilesets, and backgrounds!

We only have a small amount of OSTs at the moment, but were trying to chip away at at it step by step! We don't want to overwhelm anybody here since most of the team have their own projects they have to work on as well.

[ Writing ]

As of now the demo as been fully written out! With the addition to new team members and the director reaching out to different writers in and out of the community, the game has under go some major rewrites which were heavily needed. The rest of the game has been perfectly outlined and I'm currently halfway through the Geno/No Mercy script for the Snowden section. However, writing for the rest of the Ruins after the demo on pacifist and neutral runs is still a work in progress

The plan is to work on neutral scripts after Pacifist and Geno scripts are done. Just to make things a little easier on the teams main writer (Skill issue we know lol). Also, I am glad to say that all of UTBBs main cast as been fully made! Yes we still need to work on their section/area script but like I said before, those have been neatly outlined.

Social Change

As you may have noticed, UTBB has been freely promoting other projects and as been collaborating with other creators. While we are still participating in these collabs we have decided to take a step back in promoting other creators/project. In all honesty, that wasn't supposed to happen. You see, out director is really proud of the following he and this project has gained, and thought that he was "popular" enough to promote lesser known projects or projects just starting out in development. And as you can see he's been promoting a lot of projects. More so it's starting to feel like that's all he's doing publicly and fears that it may be a bit to much.

So with that being said, we will be taking a step back from the promotion of other projects after this dev log. However! We will leave a list (now) of projects that Reed planned to promote but never had the time until now and won't be put up in promotion ever again (unless super big news comes out like the demo/full release or it being cancelled).
