Haru went to the Strangerville Town Hall to find some information on the military base's locked door. While there, she had a fateful encounter with an extremely attractive Sim.
She's also starting to develop friendships in town, particularly with two girls (Sora Aoki (by @simsicals) and Ivy Coates (by @nomorebadtownies). Thanks to her excellent people skillZ, she was able to score a keycard and find out what's one level deeper of the military base.
But obviously, now that she can go down, something else can come up!

Fate and Phantasms #253
Tumblr media
With all that Gudaguda out of the way, it's time we took a ride with Leonardo Da Vinci (Rider), setting out to take down the lostbelts! They're an Armorer Artificer, because of course they are.
Check out their build breakdown below the cut, or their character sheet over here!
Next up: Some of you may die, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
Race and Background
Da Vinci was a human, then she died. Now she's Reborn, which is nice since that's the only way she could get shrunk like this. That gives her the usual CYO Bonuses, so pick up +2 Dexterity and +1 Intelligence. It also gives her an Ancestral Legacy for proficiency in Acrobatics and History, and Knowledge from a Past Life for an extra d6 in any skill check Proficiency times per day. Turns out the universal genius' genius is universal. Wild!
Another bonus to dying once is that it's harder for you to go back, thanks to your Deathless Nature. This gives you advantage on saves against disease, poison, and death, as well as resistance to poison damage. You also don't need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep, and finish long rests in 4 hours. Perfect given how much work is ahead of you (since you're too young for coffee).
Ability Scores
Ok Intelligence is number one that's easy. Vinky Smart, we all know that. After that is gonna be Dexterity. Wearing skates everywhere is tough if your balance isn't good. After that is Wisdom, since it's another part of bein smart. Your Charisma is also above average. Look at those cheeks. Tell me they aren't pinchablYou cannot. Your Constitution isn't great though. Da Vinci does good work, but you were a rush job tbf. Finally, dump Strength. Children can't lift cars. Unless they have giant robo arms helping them, but that's spoilers.
Class Levels
Starting off as an Artificer is a smart choice, though it's not like we're going into any other classes. This gives you proficiency in Constitution and Intelligence saves, as well as the History and Nature skills. You can also use Magical Tinkering to add tiny magic effects to tiny nonmagical items. Or use Spellcasting to add major magical effects to just about anything. You get the cantrips Dancing Lights for some spotlight drones and Guidance to smart your way out of just about any situation. You can also prepare and cast 1st level spells using your Intelligence modifier. Also, being an izzet engineer adds a couple spells to your spell list, so you can choose to prepare them if you want. we'll still be going over the in-character ones here, but those'll be on the character sheet if you want them. For now, Expeditious Retreat and Longstrider will both speed up your rollerskates, the former letting you dash as a bonus action and the latter adding 10' of movement to your speed. Only ER is concentration, so having them both up will really help you jet around. On top of that, Identify will let you use your keen deductive eye to learn the properties of magical items, or spells affecting non-magical items/creatures. Also the izzet list gives you Chaos Bolt for an offensive option, just in cast you have to be out in the field already.
Second level artificers can Infuse Items, turning non-magical items into magical ones semi-permanently. They turn back if you die, but then it's not your problem is it? You learn four to start with, but you can only have half of them up at a time. Your backpack missiles are going to be spell-based, but just in case let's turn it into a Bag of Holding anyway. If it is an actual weapon, giving it a Repeating Shot will be super useful to keep it stocked up. Turn basically anything into an Enhanced Arcane Focus for a +1 to spell attacks and saves, or make some Sending Stones to keep in touch with Gudao.
At third level you gain the Armorer specialty, so your backpack missiles can actually be Magic Missiles. They never miss, it's great. You can also cast Thunderwave to kinda clap those big metal mitts together, but we'll focus on those later. Right now you can make The Right Tool for the Job over a short rest, letting you create any set of artisans tools that lasts until you make another. You can also turn whatever you're wearing into Arcane Armor, letting you ignore strength requirements, cast spells through the armor, prevent the armor from being removed, and put it on and off as an action. You might just be wearing a dress, but it's a science dress dammit! So light armor then. You can also turn this armor into one of two models, Guardian or Infiltrator. Honestly both are pretty solid, and you can swap them between short rests, so it's not a huge decision: the former for specializing in big meaty claws, the latter for better skating and ranged attacks. The Guardian model comes with Thunder Gauntlets, melee weapons that use your Intelligence modifier to attack and deal damage. They also give disadvantage on attacks to whoever you hit, unless they hit you back. Your hands are really big, so it's easy to wave 'em around in someone's face for a distraction. You can also create a Defensive Shield as a bonus action Proficiency times a day, giving you some temporary HP. Da Vinci isn't one to let the little things slow her down. Except for stairs, I guess. If you go with the Infiltrator model, you instead get a Lightning Launcher, a ranged weapon with the same INT replacement gimmick, and once a turn you can deal extra damage with it. You also get an extra 5' of movement and a Dampening Field for advantage on Stealth checks. Most people are going to be listening for footsteps, not wheels.
At fourth level you get your first Ability Score Improvement. Bump up that Intelligence score, it goes good with just about everything.
Fifth level artificers get an Extra Attack, a brand new and original skill that only they possess. It lets you, and hold on to your seats for this one folks, make an extra attack each attack action! You also get 2nd level spells like the freebies Mirror Image and Shatter. You can also go so fast you become a Blur or go on a Kinetic Jaunt, or use your golden rule with Enhance Ability and/or Lesser Restoration to become cuter/smarter and protect yourself from debuffs respectively.
Sixth level artificers have Tool Expertise, so your proficiency bonus is doubled for tool checks. You also get two more Infusions. The Boots of the Winding Path are great for fancy skating tricks and a Spell-Refueling Ring is just useful in general.
At seventh level you can add a Flash of Genius to a nearby check or save, adding your intelligence bonus to the roll intelligence bonus times a day.
Use this ASI to max out your Intelligence for the best of all worlds. Haha, artificers.
Ninth level artificers get Armor Modifications, giving your science dress a huge upgrade. Your armor now counts as four separate items: The armor, boots, helmet, and weapon can all be infused separately. You can also have an extra 2 infusions at a time if they're on your armor. You also get third level spells! Hypnotic Pattern and Lightning Bolt aren't super in character, but they're free. You can also use Call Lightning from being an Izzet Engineer, which is neither in-character nor free, but it's a spell you'd only get otherwise from being a druid so at least it's novel. For spells you choose, Haste is great for an extra boost of roller-blade speed, and Intellect Fortress lets you show off how often you worked out in the library, giving you resistance to psychic damage and advantage on your soft stat saves.
At tenth level you become a Magic Item Adept, giving you an extra attunement slot and you can craft cheap items faster. On the magic side of things it's time to hard-focus on your big metal claws! Pick up the cantrip Sword Burst to swing those things around for some force damage, then pick up the infusion Gauntlets of Ogre Power to give yourself a strength score of 19. Or use a Helm of Awareness to speed out of danger with advantage on initiative rolls and immunity to surprise.
Eleventh level artificers can create Spell-Storing Items out of weapons and focii. They have to be low-level, but you can give them to other allies and still have them be as strong as your casting without using your concentration.
Now that our Intelligence is as high as possible, there's not much else for us to do here. So.... use this ASI to bump up your Dexterity for fancier roller blading, I guess.
Thirteenth level artificers know 4th level spells, like Fire Shield, Greater Invisibility, Conjure Minor Elementals, and Divination. The first two are freebies, the last two are added to your options from being an engineer. For spells you choose, Arcane Eye is a useful drone, Fabricate will help with inventions, Freedom of Movement is more roller-blade nonsense, and you can Summon Construct to make that robot bird Old You liked so much.
At fourteenth level you're a Magic Item Savant, giving you yet another slot and you can ignore all requirements involved with using a magic item. Now you truly are a universal genius! You also gain the Mage Hand cantrip so those big ol' hands can carry stuff around, and two more infusions. Arcane Propulsion Armor gives you even faster skates and some metal arms with impressive range no matter what model you're wearing, while the Ring of Free Action guarantees you can dodge any magic that would tie you up while you skate through even the most difficult of terrain. If you're plane-hopping you'll have to be ready for anything.
At fifteenth level you've created Perfected Armor, giving each model another feature for you to agonize over. Guardian models can use their reaction to force a strength save on a creature near you, pulling them closer to you and letting you make an attack against them proficiency times per day. Infiltrator models mark the creatures they hit with their Lightning Launchers, making them shed light and giving them disadvantage to hit you for the round. Additionally, the next attack to hit them has advantage, and if it hits they take even more damage.
Okay, we really don't need any more ASIs, but since we have one, I guess... pick up the Observant feat to round out your Wisdom score. It also lets you read lips, and you get a +5 bonus to your passive perception and investigation.
Seventeenth level artificers get fifth level spells. I think getting Passwall is kind of a copout replacement for the paper moon, even if it does get you through walls, if not a Wall of Force. (Though if your DM wants you to fight lostbelts and doesn't give you a way in, that's on them.) You can also Conjure Elemental from being an Engineer, and you can also use Creation for more invention, Skill Empowerment to tame even the wildest of grand stallions with a doubled proficiency on skill checks, and Animate Objects to finally create the Shadow Border! It'll be a little cramped since you can only animate a Huge item, but if someone else Enlarges it that should be okay.
At eighteenth level, you are a Magic Item Master. This one's just another attunement slot. I don't know why they saved the worst for last, but here ya go. You also get two more Infusions though. The Gem of Seeing can give you Truesight for a good distance, instantly ruining a lot of your DM's plans, and the Boots of Speed will make your rollerblades even more ridiculous. Or you can fit them onto your shadow border to really get it moving. Either way you can use your bonus action to activate them, doubling your walking speed and giving opportunity attacks disadvantage for up to ten minutes a day or until you deactivate them. So your base speed, with propulsion armor and the infiltration model, is 40'. Add 10' from Longstrider for 50' a turn, then Haste for another action and doubled speed, plus these boots for another doubling... That's 200' a turn for free, plus two actions you can dash with for 600' a round. Ya fast, is what I'm getting at.
One last ASI! Since you've got big ol metal claws, I think the Gift of the Metallic Dragon isn't too far out of left field. You learn Cure Wounds, which you can cast an extra time for free each day using your intelligence. You can also use those big arms of yours to protect yourself or others, reacting to add your proficiency to a target's AC for the roll, up to Proficiency times a day.
The final level of artificer is exactly why most people don't multiclass, as the Soul of Artifice is totally busted. You get +1 to all saves for each magic item you're attuned to, and you can give yourself guts as a reaction by ending an artificers infusion. It's pretty good.
Pros and Cons
Pros
As I mentioned above, you are obscenely fast, and it's really hard for anyone to slow you down. You can skate around the battlefield with the greatest of ease, the entire time keeping your enemies from ever even touching you.
Being such a speed freak is also a huge boon given how supportive you can be. Your attacks give allies advantage on their attacks, you can protect them with your claws, and you can always hand out some of your magic items to boost their abilities as well.
Your own skills are also pretty impressive, with solid stats in everything but strength (one skill, plus you have an infusion to trivialize that) and constitution (no skills) plus advantage from Enhance Ability and the boost from Guidance and/or your Knowledge from a Past Life means you're pretty much set for any skill challenge ahead of you.
Cons
To be honest, the fact that we don't have a paper moon is kind of disappointing to me, even if it is more of a macguffin than a character ability.
You're also pretty squishy, with just over 100 HP thanks to a whopping +0 in constitution. Just ignore how a single infusion swap could trivialize that...
Your multitude of abilities sometimes leads to clashes, for example, you work best from a distance, but a lot of your abilities are short range, so pelting someone with magic missiles and protecting your allies are mutually exclusive.

It only takes you. It only takes us. Do reach out to friends and supportive family, but you get to make the decision to change the legacy this generation leaves to the next. You don’t need permission to share or reshape your story, to decide secrecy and silence ends with you, to set boundaries, respect boundaries, use your voice and choices to defy dysfunction. I’m rooting for y’all! ✨ [image description: white text on black background with daisy edge that says: It only takes one person to decide family dysfunction stops with them. 15 TO WATCH: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/NEWS/BUSINESS/MARKETING/ENDORSEMENT ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 13
with Jamie Swimmer
In sports, as in life, sometimes the biggest actions come from the smallest voices. Starting a week in which Nike launched its massive “Equality” initiative, designed to bring attention to racial justice,” via multipage newspaper ads starring LeBron James, Serena Williams, Megan Rapinoe, and Kevin Durant, and in a corresponding spot that aired during the Grammys, a New Jersey coed youth basketball team decided to forfeit its entire season rather than kick two female teammates off the team. After a New Jersey CYO league director handed down the ruling that a coed basketball team was not allowed in the boy’s league, players on the St. John’s fifth grade team voted unanimously to forego the season, according to NJ.com. “After the opposing team left the gym as did the officials,” the St. John’s team split up and scrimmaged each other…wearing #UnityGames T-shirts. In a time in which we need it more than ever, these youngsters didn’t just hypothesize that sports delivers unity. They proved it.
As the NBA gears up for its annual All-Star break in New Orleans, the Brooklyn Nets become the fourth NBA team to sign a jersey sponsor. According to SportsBusiness Journal, Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment announced a deal between the Nets and software company Infor. Sources close to the deal report that Infor will pay the team $8 million annually to have its patch on the jersey front. In addition to the patch, Infor will have a new branding presence throughout Barclays Center and the HSS Training Center in Brooklyn. This marks Infor's “first North American sports sponsorship.” The Nets now join the Philadelphia 76ers (StubHub), Boston Celtics (GE), and Sacramento Kings (Blue Diamond) as the only teams to have signed jersey sponsors thus far. Over the next three years, teams will evaluate the additional revenue, corporate partnerships, and activation opportunities and undoubtedly refine and expand the program. StubHub as a pioneer, GE as a blue chip company, and other corporations will weigh in to increase creative corporate participation in the NBA and other sports.
Golden State Warriors guard and Under Armour golden boy Stephen Curry usually stays away from political statements, but not this time. Curry publicly responded to comments about Donald Trump made by Under Armour Founder & CEO Kevin Plank. According to the East Bay Times, Plank shared with CNBC’s “Fast Money Halftime Report” that it “is a real asset for the country” to have “such a pro-business President.” The comments left Curry questioning whether or not Under Armour had changed its values. “Every mantra that I live by, they share that,” said Curry. “And so when you blur the lines of business and politics, there is an opportunity for things to get muddy.” Plank and Curry reportedly have since spoken to clarify any confusion, and Under Armour has moved quickly to cover its tracks. Regardless of party affiliation, sports messages and endorsements are highly visible, frequently watched, and largely misconstrued.
As pitchers and catchers prepare to report to spring training in Lakeland, Florida, Detroit Tigers fans and the sports industry prepare to mourn owner Mike Illitch. Illitch, who "rose from a humble west-side neighborhood to assemble a food, sports and entertainment empire that enabled him to return the Stanley Cup to Hockeytown, build both a new arena and a ballpark," passed away on Friday at the age of 87, according to the Detroit Free Press. Under Ilitch, the Tigers made two trips to the World Series and the Red Wings won four Stanley Cups. A private man, Ilitch bought the Red Wings in 1982, purchased the Tigers a decade later from Domino's Pizza Founder Tom Monaghan, and fought through complicated political and funding issues to get a the ballpark now known as Comerica Park completed. He also turned Little Caesars Pizza into a $3.4 billion business, "invested in downtown Detroit long before anyone else, and turned the Tigers and Red Wings into perennial contenders." This old school owner built a sports and community legacy that should serve as a model for generations of franchise owners to come.
Despite losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI, the Atlanta Falcons continue to sell PSLs at a high rate. According to The Daily, the team’s ticket sales for the soon-to-be-open Mercedes-Benz Stadium are still going strong into the offseason. “From the conclusion of the game through the close of business Monday, the Falcons received 560 unique inbound requests for PSLs and tickets at the venue.” That marker is the highest number of inbound ticket requests the day following a game all season, including playoffs. “In the same period, 256 PSL sales were completed online, the highest single-day online sales total since sales began.” The Falcons have now sold just over 76% of all available PSLs “and suite inventory is at 90% sold.” The new stadium is expected to be among the league’s finest – right up there with AT&T Stadium in Dallas and U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium should continue the Falcons upward trajectory in value and league importance (regardless of the final 24 minutes of Super Bowl LI).
In preparing for the 2022 World Cup, Qatar faces a challenge that other host countries have shared: it needs to build not only soccer stadiums, but cities. According to the BBC, Qatar is spending an astonishing $500 million per week on major infrastructure projects in preparation for the 2022 soccer tournament. Qatar Finance Minister Ali al-Emadi confirmed this number and noted that he expects the spending to continue at this rate for “three to four years as new stadiums, motorways, rail links and hospitals are built.” In total, more than $200 billion will be spent by the Middle-Eastern country – far more than the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which reportedly cost that country $11 billion. Al-Emadi expects all of the projects to be completed on time for the beginning of the tournament, though complaints about migrant worker conditions plague the Qatar building process. Precedent for the mega-infrastructure build:  Dubai and Abu Dhabi were constructed almost overnight into two and four million respective populations. Oil money, enlightened development expertise, and world-class infrastructure propelled the United Arab Emirates – let’s see what happens in neighboring Qatar.
The British are making a significant investment to secure their first America’s Cup victory in 166 years. According to the London Times, racing star Sir Ben Ainslie has “launched the boat which he hopes will win the America’s Cup back from Great Britain.” The boat, named Rita, like all of Ainslie’s boats, was developed in collaboration with Land Rover and cost upwards of $125 million. The hope is that a combination of Ben Ainslie’s “proven genius as a racer, the best technologies harnessed from the British automotive industry and cutting-edge design can make 2017 a landmark year.” The boat has an “F-1-style” to it, with aerodynamic improvements created with the assistance of artificial intelligence that are meant to give the boat an advantage over its competitors. “The America’s Cup is the one we have never won,” said Ainslie. “It’s a bit of a sore point. We want to get the job done and bring the cup home.” When countries throw substantial infrastructure, public support, and funding toward a sport, success usually follows (see Chinese gymnastics). Interesting to look forward to British sailing and Tokyo 2020.
In wake of the nation’s state-sponsored doping scandal, Russia is set to be banned from this summer’s World Para Athletics Championships in London. According to the London Telegraph, Russia was expelled from the “International Association of Athletics Federation’s version of the event” following its orchestration of the “biggest doping scandal in history.” The scandal plagued Russia in its build-up to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics this past summer as well. While a final decision on this matter will not be made until May, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency would need to be declared compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code before the event takes place if it wants to participate, which is not possible; the earliest RUSADA is expected to be "declared compliant" with the WADA code is November. The head of the World Athletics Championships said he now "backs Russia’s exclusion from the event because of the country’s continuing refusal to admit that it had a state-organized doping system." Hopefully, the bans are not met with controversy, denial, and political intrigue. Rather, a common vision toward credibile antidoping measures and long-term cleanup.
The Golden State Warriors are the best team in basketball and their ticket prices reflect just that. According to ESPN.com, the Warriors are “raising ticket prices once again,” with increases coming between 15-25%. A courtside seat will now cost you $715, up from $625, while the cheapest seat in Oracle Arena will rise from $32 to $40. At the start of the Warriors' "recent run of success," the 2014-2015 title season, the "cheapest season-ticket price seat was $18, while courtside was $450 a game." The team’s season-ticket holder waiting list is growing at a similarly fast clip – more than 32,000 people are now waiting for season tickets. “It is the cost of doing business,” said co-owner Joe Lacob. “We have a great product and we have to pay for that product…As long as our fans want that product and we can deliver it, we’re going to do what we can.” As the Warriors continue to improve on the court and begin building their new San Francisco arena, look for variable pricing and other methods to allow consumer choice.
Sources close to the Chicago Bulls have confirmed that the team’s front office duo of John Paxson and Gar Forman “are safe” through at least next season. According to the Chicago Tribune, Paxson, Executive Vice President/Basketball Operations, and Forman, General Manager, have been under fire over the past few years following the Bulls’ underwhelming results. A source added that the Reinsdorf ownership trusts Paxson and Forman to the point that the two would keep their jobs even if the Bulls miss the postseason for a second straight season.” The Bulls missed big on free agency years ago when they signed Carlos Boozer instead of LeBron James, and the team’s signing of Rajon Rondo this past summer has been nothing short of controversial. “I don't know how they still have their jobs today," said Steve Rosenbloom of the Chicago Tribune. “This doesn't sound like happy news for Bulls fans hoping to see another championship in their lifetime.” The Bulls’ Michael Jordan legacy is safe, but other iconic franchises have built long-term success stories as well. Hopefully for Chicago, the Bulls will find a way to get back to the top of the basketball mountain.
The upstart Drone Racing League has a new sponsor: German insurance group Allianz. According to the London Times, Allianz reportedly signed a sponsorship deal with the DRL worth more $10 million over two years, with plans to further “extend the partnership over five years.” Allianz is a very active sponsor of numerous sports leagues and teams across the world; its portfolio “currently includes Saracens rugby club, Formula 1, Bayern Munich and stadia across Europe.” The DRL currently airs on Sky Sports and ESPN and has Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross signed on as a key investor for the American start-up. Founder Nick Horbaczewski described the deal with Allianz as a “huge milestone” for the league, which continues to gain popularity globally. “Allianz brings an incredible brand and brand credibility to the sport, so I think it is a major legitimizing moment,” said Horbaczewski. Look for the Drone Racing League to be one of the fastest growing “niche sports” on the landscape in the next 3-5 years:  venues, sponsorships, television, etc. All of the right ingredients.
The San Diego Chargers are officially gone, but that void may soon be filled by an MLS franchise. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego State has been “relatively quiet” on a proposal from a group of local investors to build an MLS stadium in San Diego. The proposed stadium would seat 30,000, but pushback against the plan call it “settling,” and that it is “small-time.” The SDSU football team “averaged 37,289 over six home games,” thus exceeding the capacity for the new stadium if built to its planned size. SDSU played a game at Qualcomm Stadium this past season, and the crowd of 35,000 made the game “seem like it was being played inside a library.” “We’re still discussing what that top end is going to be. It will be expandable to 40,000. That will be in the plan as we work with the architects and we lay out what the stadium site will look like,” said SDSU AD John David Wicker. Look for increased political momentum to support this project, especially since the San Diego region may view this as the “last great chance” to build a new facility to attract/keep major sports events.
The Chicago Cubs’ success has directly translated into more business for Wrigley Field. According to Crain’s Chicago Business, Wrigley Field is near its limit for night events in 2017 after adding a Lady Gaga concert recently. The historic baseball stadium has “nine concert dates on the docket for this summer, breaking last year’s record of seven.” Adding night concerts might appear to have no direct effect on the Cubs, but this now leaves the team “little wiggle room to add night games this season without having to give up night games in 2018 under terms of a city ordinance.” The city ordinance states that the Cubs can only schedule up to 35 night games or night events each season, so every night concert added means one less night game for the reigning World Champions. As it currently stands, the Cubs have 29 scheduled night games, “meaning the five extra concerts put them at 34 night events for the year.” Inevitably, the Cubs are the “biggest thing in Chicago.” The organization predictably attempts to capitalize on the goodwill, though the neighborhood location of Wrigley Field provides economic, physical, and logistical challenges.
The Olympics will be without longtime host Bob Costas going forward, ending the primetime host’s “record-setting run that saw him host 11 Games” for NBC since 1992. According to SportsBusiness Journal, Mike Tirico will replace Costas starting with the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Costas is speculated to remain a part of the Olympics though, from producing some special pieces to adding voice-overs to some stories. NBC Broadcasting & Sports Chair Mark Lazarus confirmed that Costas will be taking a significant “step back” in terms of his day-to-day role, though he will remain as one of the network’s key talents for its “big and iconic events.” “This is a great way to pass the torch from one iconic figure to someone who’s on his way to becoming an iconic figure in the sports broadcasting world,” said Lazarus. Costas had been planning on reevaluating his role with the network for years, but thought it would be best to stay committed through the 2016 Rio Olympics. Enberg, Scully, Musburger, Gowdy – Costas. Hopefully, the next generation of “iconic broadcasters” can live up to this legacy.
Following a horrendous 1-15 season, the Cleveland Browns will reduce season ticket costs by 40%. According to the Akron Beacon Journal, this coming season will mark the eighth time in nine years that the team will not raise ticket prices. The Browns will now rank “either 31st or 32nd in the NFL for season-ticket prices per game this year.” Meanwhile in Chicago, the Bears are raising ticket prices following two years of stagnant prices. Most Soldier Field sections will receive a 1-4% price increase, while “some will see a price decrease.” The increase comes to the displeasure of many after “each of the final four homes games were played before at least 10,000 empty seats at Solider Field.” The Los Angeles Rams, finally, informed season-ticket holders that prices will not go up at the L.A. Coliseum. Prices are expected to "increase dramatically" in 2019 when their new $2.6 billion stadium opens, which will include the cost of PSLs. Good to see that the ticket market bears some resemblance to on-field performance (at least in Cleveland). Obviously, the pricing will go “through the roof” in Los Angeles when the new stadium opens. As for Chicago, raising prices after last year’s performance merely means that the Bears have new incentives to turn their on-field performance around.

MORE ON: CHILD VICTIMS ACT Rochester Archdiocese files for bankruptcy amid sex abuse claim obligations Handmaid's Tale comes to life with JCOPE protest in Albany Diocese of Brooklyn hit with 10 new lawsuits under Child Victims Act Child Victims Act lawsuits pile up as Rockefeller U Hospital settles 200-plus When Jim Clemente walked into the Bronx home of his former summer camp director, it wasn’t for old time’s sake. The twenty-something Clemente was wearing a wire. Federal agents and an NYPD detective were listening in. And his old camp boss, Michael J. O’Hara, was showing Clemente pictures of kids he’d molested — just like he’d abused Clemente a decade prior. “I was scared to death while I was there,” Clemente, now 59 and retired from a storied FBI career, recalled of the 1986 meeting. Clemente had convinced the predator he was a kindred spirit and had to keep his cool, or the criminal case being built against O’Hara — a Boy Scout leader, Catholic school teacher and youth-basketball coach believed to have sexually abused hundreds of kids — would fall apart. The meeting was his sixth in three months with the violent, intimidating drunk from Long Island with the perpetual “sh-t eating smirk,” Clemente remembered. O’Hara had plied a teenaged Clemente with beer and violated him while they were alone at the Catholic Youth Organization camp in upstate Godeffroy. Enlarge Image A picture of Clemente around the time he was molested as a child. Clemente at the time of the O’Hara investigation was a fledgling Bronx Family Court prosecutor. He would go on to become a criminal profiler for the feds, to his present career as a TV writer for the show “Criminal Minds.” His quest for justice began in 1985, with a TV movie about incest. “My brother called me. He had seen the movie, ‘Something About Amelia,’ and I think Ted Danson played a sex offender. He said, ‘We should do something about the director at that camp we were at,’ ” Clemente said. His sibling revealed he’d once snuck into O’Hara’s office to find “two paper bags filled with pictures of him molesting boys.” “I said, ‘Oh God, I thought I was the only one.’” ‘I went in the shower, and I turned the light off … and I just cried. That was the day I kind of withdrew from everybody.’ When he asked his brother why he never told him, Clemente’s brother said O’Hara somehow suspected he’d seen his secret stash and pointed a rifle at him, pulling the trigger until the gun clicked. “It would be that easy,” O’Hara sneered. Strangled by shame and fear, Clemente could only confide in his high school guidance counselor, a priest, Father Frank Stinner, about the abuse. Stinner’s reply stunned Clemente. “Say 10 ‘Our Fathers,’ and 10 ‘Hail Marys.’ I absolve you of your sin. Don’t ever speak of this again.” He kept silent for a decade. But after the fateful conversation with his brother, Clemente called the FBI-NYPD Joint Task Force on Sexual Exploitation of Children. “As I was telling the story, I started shaking, shivering,” he said. “I was 15. It was my first time ever being away from home.” O’Hara was a “tough love” authority figure who hit kids and shot his rifle off without warning. He had Clemente stay with him alone in the woods to help close the campground. O’Hara complimented him, took him out, handed him booze. He started talking about sex. Enlarge Image Clemente (center) pictured during an episode of CBS’ The Case of: JonBenét RamseyCBS via Getty “I was really embarrassed. I didn’t know he was manipulating me. Eventually he molested me, and he did it again and again.” When O’Hara returned Clemente to his Goshen home, he forced the teen to shake hands as they parted. “I went in the shower, and I turned the light off … and I just cried. That was the day I kind of withdrew from everybody.” His mom always suspected something. “She’d say, ‘Jimmy, you used to be such a happy kid, what’s wrong?’ … I never told her before she passed away from cancer.” Months after he reported O’Hara, the task force needed Clemente’s help. “I was no like no f—-king way! I can’t sit down and have a cordial conversation with this guy!” But his answer changed the day he visited his alma mater, Fordham University — and saw O’Hara, sitting at a desk in the registrar’s office. “It makes my skin crawl,” Clemente recalled. O’Hara knew Clemente had graduated from Fordham Law School and it appeared he had been keeping tabs on him. But it was the predator’s parting words which sealed his fate. “Oh yeah, I was sorry to hear about your mother’s death,’” Clemente remembered. “It creeped me out and it pissed me off. I called the FBI and I said, ‘I know where he is, wire me up.’” ‘The detective met me and they took off the wire and I immediately ran to the bathroom and puked my guts out.’ On the advice of investigators, Clemente enticed O’Hara to a meeting, saying he needed to talk and O’Hara was the only one he could turn to. They met Halloween night, 1986. “My heart was racing. [The agents] came to my house to wire me up. They were late. They gave me this sort of pep talk and instructions. “I can remember vividly, hearing my own footfalls as I was walking down the street … conscious of every single sound. I can remember people in costumes walking across the street. It was so bizarre. It felt like there was a billion-watt searchlight pointed at me.” They shared a booth. O’Hara quickly ordered a beer, and flung an insult just as fast when Clemente was slow to join in. “You always were a wimp,” O’Hara said. O’Hara got straight to the point: “‘This is about sex, right? It has to do with what happened between us?’” A disgusted Clemente recalled how O’Hara talked about the molestation as if “this was something we decided to do together.” O’Hara, then 43, shared his horrific legacy: he’d been a pedophile since he was 19, working at a Queens orphanage where he sought out the night shift to have access to kids, he told Clemente. “He bragged about it. He bragged about boys I knew at the camp, he literally went through the list — he had dates and times and places, first names. All well beyond the statute of limitations, which was five years at the time.” They spoke for three hours. Clemente had to leave by then because the tape in his recording device was about to run out. “The detective met me and they took off the wire and I immediately ran to the bathroom and puked my guts out.” It was half a dozen meetings before Clemente was able to help steer investigators to victims at a school at Hastings-on-Hudson. The recent cases would be viable in court. As O’Hara gleefully showed off evidence of his crimes in their final face to face, including the photos, Clemente stood in the dumpy brick duplex and palmed two of the pictures and slipped them into his back pocket. O’Hara soon after the meeting disposed of the cache of 500 photos, so the two images Clemente lifted became crucial evidence in the case. O’Hara was arrested 1987 and convicted on a child pornography charge. He was sentenced to a year in jail. Enlarge Image CBS via Getty When the case was finished, one of the FBI agents Clemente worked with took him to lunch and handed him an application to join the bureau. ” ‘They would take me, even though I was a victim?” Clemente asked. “Of course!” the agent replied. “It really was the pivotal turning point in my life,” Clemente recalled. During his FBI career, he worked on child-trafficking cases and white-collar crime. One of the pedophiles he busted was Father Stinner. Clemente plans to sue the Archdiocese of New York, which ran the summer CYO camp, in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday under New York’s new Child Victims Act, which created a one year “look back” window for sexual abuse cases past the statute of limitations. He called the law “amazing.” Investigators believed O’Hara, who died in 2000, had as many as 200 victims. He was first reported in the 1960s in Hewlett, Long Island, when the Boy Scouts created a “perversion file” on O’Hara. Despite knowing about the accusation, the Archdiocese employed O’Hara at various schools for years, Clemente’s lawyer, Jeff Herman, said. “It’s shameful that the Archdiocese of New York Catholic schools did not remove O’Hara in 1966, when he was caught the first time,” Herman said. Clemente urges O’Hara’s other victims to “join us in demanding justice.” “When it was a deep, dark ugly secret that I couldn’t talk about, it was a deep dark ugly part of me.” Talking openly about molestation is the only way to stop it and to move on, said Clemente. “I can tell you from experience, once I went forward and once I confronted him, that’s when I started to turn it around,” he said. President Donald Trump announced on Monday, July 9, that he was nominating Brett Kavanaugh, a federal judge on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, to fill retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy’s Supreme Court seat. The anticipated decision was announced during a prime-time television special. You can read more here about the background and implications of Trump’s choice.
Below is a full rush transcript of the press conference.
President Donald Trump: My fellow Americans, tonight I speak to you from the east room of the White House regarding one of the most profound responsibilities of the President of the United States. And that is the selection of a Supreme Court justice. I have often heard that other than matters of war and peace, this is the most important decision a president will make. The Supreme Court is entrusted with the safeguarding of the crown jewel of our republic — the Constitution of the United States. 12 days ago, Justice Anthony Kennedy informed me of his decision to take senior status on the Supreme Court, opening a new vacancy. For more than four decades, Justice Kennedy served our nation with incredible passion and devotion. I’d like to thank Justice Kennedy for a lifetime of distinguished service. [Applause]
In a few moments, I will announce my selection for Justice Kennedy’s replacement. This is the second time I have been faced with this task. Last year I nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to replace the late, great Justice Antonin Scalia. [Applause] I chose Justice Gorsuch because I knew that he, just like Justice Scalia, would be a faithful servant of our constitution. We are honored to be joined tonight by Justice Scalia’s beloved wife, Maureen. [Applause] Thank you, Maureen.
Both Justice Kennedy and Justice Scalia were appointed by a president who understood that the best defense of our liberty and a judicial branch immune from political prejudice were judges that apply the Constitution as written. That president happened to be Ronald Reagan. For this evening’s announcement, we are joined by Ronald Reagan’s attorney general, Edwin Meese. [Applause] And, Ed, I speak for everyone. Thank you for everything you’ve done to protect our nation’s great legal heritage.
In keeping with President Reagan’s legacy, I do not ask about a nominee’s personal opinions. What matters is not a judge’s political views but whether they can set aside those views to do what the law and the constitution require. I am pleased to say that I have found, without doubt, such a person.
Tonight it is my honor and privilege to announce that I will nominate Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. [Applause] I know the people in this room very well. They do not stand and give applause like that very often. So they have some respect and Brett’s wife, Ashley, and their two daughters, Margaret and Liza have joined us on the podium. Thank you and congratulations to you as a family. Thank you. [Applause]
Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications, and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law. A graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School, Judge Kavanaugh currently teaches at Harvard, Yale, and Georgetown. Throughout legal circles, he is considered a judge’s judge, a true thought leader among his peers. He’s a brilliant jurist with a clear and effective writing style universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time. And just like Justice Gorsuch, he excelled as a clerk for Justice Kennedy. That’s great. Thank you. [Applause]
Judge Kavanaugh has devoted his life to public service. For the last 12 years, he has served as a judge on the DC Circuit court of appeals with great distinction, authoring over 300 opinions which have been widely admired for their skill, insight, and rigorous adherence to the law. Among those opinions are more than a dozen that the supreme court has adopted as the law of the land. Beyond his great renown as a judge, he is active in his community. He coaches CYO basketball, serves meals to needy families, and having learned from his mom, who was a schoolteacher in DC, tutors children at local elementary schools. There is no one in America more qualified for this position and no one more deserving.
I want to thank the senators on both sides of the aisle, Republican and Democrat, for their consultation and advice during the selection process. This incredibly qualified nominee deserves a swift confirmation and robust bipartisan support. The rule of law is our nation’s proud heritage. It is the cornerstone of our freedom. It is what guarantees equal justice, and the Senate now has the chance to protect this glorious heritage by sending Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. And now, Judge, the podium is yours. [Applause]
Brett Kavanaugh: Mr. President, thank you. Throughout this process, I have witnessed firsthand your appreciation for the vital role of the American judiciary.
No president has ever consulted more widely or talked with more people from more backgrounds to seek input about a supreme court nomination. Mr. President, I am grateful to you, and I’m humbled by your confidence in me. 30 years ago, President Reagan nominated Anthony Kennedy to the Supreme Court. The framers established that the Constitution is designed to secure the blessings of liberty. Justice Kennedy devoted his career to securing liberty. I am deeply honored to be nominated to fill his seat on the Supreme Court. [Applause]
My mom and dad are here. I am their only child. When people ask what it’s like to be an only child, I say it depends on who your parents are. I was lucky. My mom was a teacher. In the 1960s and ’70s, she taught history at two largely African-American public high schools in Washington, DC, McKinley Tech and HD Woodson. Her example taught me the importance of equality for all Americans. My mom was a trailblazer. When I was ten, she went to law school and became a prosecutor. My introduction to law came at our dinner table when she practiced her closing arguments. Her trademark line was, “Use your common sense. What rings true? What rings false?” That’s good advice for a juror and for a son. One of the few women prosecutors at that time, she overcame barriers and became a trial judge. The president introduced me tonight as Judge Kavanaugh. But to me, that title will always belong to my mom. My dad went to law school at night while working full time. He has an unparalleled work ethic and has passed down to me his passion for playing and watching sports. I love him dearly. The motto of my Jesuit high school was “Men for others.” I’ve tried to live that creed. I’ve spent my career in public service from the executive branch in the White House to the US Court of appeals for the DC Circuit. I’ve served with 17 other judges, each of them a colleague and a friend. My judicial philosophy is straightforward. A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law. A judge must interpret statutes as written. And a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent.
For the past 11 years, I’ve taught hundreds of students primarily at Harvard Law School. I teach that the Constitution’s separation of powers protects individual liberty, and I remain grateful to the dean who hired me, Justice Elena Kagan. As a judge, I hire four law clerks each year. I look for the best. My law clerks come from diverse backgrounds and points of view. I am proud that a majority of my law clerks have been women.
I am part of the vibrant Catholic community in the DC Area. The members of that community disagree about many things, but we are united by a commitment to serve. Father John Ensler is here. 40 years ago I was an altar boy for Father John. These days I help him serve meals to the homeless at Catholic Charities.
I have two spirited daughters, Margaret and Liza. Margaret loves sports, and she loves to read. Liza loves sports, and she loves to talk. [Laughter] I have tried to create bonds with my daughters like my dad created with me. For the past seven years, I’ve coached my daughters’ basketball teams. The girls on the team call me Coach K. [Laughter] I am proud of our bless sacrament team that just won the city championship. [Applause] My daughters and I also go to lots of games. Our favorite memory was going to the historic Notre Dame/UConn women’s basketball game at this year’s final four. Unforgettable.
My wife, Ashley, is a West Texan, a graduate of Abilene Cooper Public High School and the University of Texas. She is now the town manager of our community. We met in 2001 when we both worked in the White House. Our first date was on September 10, 2001. The next morning, I was a few steps behind her as the secret service shouted at all of us to sprint out the front gates of the White House because there was an inbound plane. In the difficult weeks that followed, Ashley was a source of strength for President Bush and for everyone in this building. Through bad days and so many better days since then, she has been a great wife and inspiring mom. I thank god every day for my family. [Applause]
Tomorrow I begin meeting with members of the Senate, which plays an essential role in this process. I will tell each senator that I revere the Constitution. I believe that an independent judiciary is the crown jewel of our constitutional republic. If confirmed by the Senate, I will keep an open mind in every case, and I will always strive to preserve the Constitution of the United States and the American rule of law. Thank you, Mr. President. [Applause]

Choose Your Own Legacy
Disclaimer: There’s likely challenges out there like this. This is simply how I’m playing my current legacy and thought I’d share the details in case it could be useful for anyone.
Hi friends! This is a legacy format which allows me to explore different aspects of the game while still having loads of freedom to do what I want and tell stories if I wish.
As I do or complete each thing in the game, I strike it out, with the hope of eventually ticking off everything (but there’s no order to do things in)! Below is the template. Keep or remove whatever items you want! There’s some things I chose not to include (they are in brackets), but feel free to put them back in if you wish.
RULES:
Begin on an empty lot (size is your choice) with a new young adult sim and $0. No money cheats allowed.
Everything about the sim is up to you. Strike out the traits you use and world you choose to live in. Continue to strike out other stuff as you complete it. I’m also really type A so I put the generation when it was struck out in brackets beside it (ex. G1).
Build a house on the lot as you earn money. Don’t move to a different house, lot or world until the gen 2 heir is a young adult and moves out!
As with normal legacies, the next generation begins when the heir becomes a young adult. You don’t have to move out the heir at this time - I just typically will since it’s pretty normal in real life for children of that age to move out on their own.
Try not to use any mood cheats (though occasional use for storytelling purposes is fine).
For realism’s sake, when moving an heir out into university dorms or an apartment, I give them $5000 to start with. The rest of the family money stays with the parents’ household (exceptions could be for storytelling purposes). For spares, money doesn’t matter and I give them whatever nice house I choose!
When moving in a significant other, add only $10,000 to the household funds. Deduct anything extra. (This is for the realism of another young adult having saved some money but not having the equity of a whole house to bring into the household)
While I’m only striking out traits if they belong to the heir or spouse, I will strike out aspirations, maxed skills, maxed careers and university degrees for anyone as long as I was playing them for the duration of that task. So, if a spare completes a skill or a degree while I’ve been playing them, I will strike it out since I, as the player, completed it.
I don’t own Horse Ranch, Realm of Magic, Vampires, Strangerville or Werewolves so these packs and their subsequent aspirations, careers, traits, etc. are not included below. However, you could easily add them to the lists.

Despite being pretty opposed to commitment (without being Non-Committal), Haru does kiss Freddie goodbye when she cuts their date short to do something about the situation. She both got a hazmat suit from the Curio Shop and enlisted Ivy Copur's (by @ophelia-nygmos) help to make a spore filter to use in the Hazmat suit.
Soon, it would be time to go down to the next level of the base. But would she be ready?

A 116-Year Transformation: 5 Questions With Walgreens CMO Adam Holyk
Even before Walgreens announced a new tagline—”Trusted Since 1901″—on December 4th, the leading pharmacy retailer had been undergoing a brand transformation. In addition to revamping its U.S. stores acquired from Rite-Aid and Duane Reade, it has been modernizing its business—creating a unified omnichannel experience, testing in-store offerings, products and services, expanding its inventory (including enhancing its beauty section) while simplifying its offering, updating its mobile app, loyalty program and website and refining its store design.
It’s all in the name of better serving the customer and growing its business at a time when rival CVS is moving to acquire Aetna and online giant Amazon is reportedly eyeing the retail pharmaceutical business. It’s evolving to meet customer health and wellness needs with a particular focus on two demographics of female shoppers—millennials and Gen X. And while it’s looking to the future, it’s honoring its legacy of a century-plus of exceptional customer service and care in order to lay claim to the title of America’s most-loved and innovative pharmacy-led health, well-being and beauty company.
youtube
To underline its brand strengths and revitalized offering, a new online and TV ad campaign features what it’s calling “Care Stories”—real people, including its pharmacists, other employees and customers, sharing stories that highlight a commitment to customer service that goes “beyond the counter” whether in times of crisis or day-to-day needs.
For more insights on the Walgreens brand transformation and journey, brandchannel editor-in-chief Shirley Brady and InterbrandHealth executive director Barry Silverstein spoke with Adam Holyk (right), senior vice president and chief marketing officer for the Walgreen Company.
Adam, let’s start off with the new tagline. How does highlighting yesterday—a history that spans 116 years—position the brand as America’s go-to and trusted pharmacy retailer today and tomorrow?
As we looked at the brand, we went back and what was really true is that why we care for customers has remained the same since 1901, being a pharmacy-led business, but how we care for them obviously evolved over time in a very modern way. The new brand positioning is really born out of this idea. As we went through the repositioning we really talked to our consumers, both through qualitative and quantitative research.
What we heard from them is that Walgreens is at its best in the ideas of being trusted, and being a trusted expert; second around care and caring in communities in small and big ways; and also being accessible, from a convenience standpoint but also being accessible and welcoming to all. So ultimately what we see is this really being an opportunity for us to bring forward what we believe has always been true with Walgreens, and delivering it in a very modern and relevant way today.
The new tagline, “Trusted Since 1901,” brings out what we heard from consumers. In our focus groups, as we spoke to our customers and our patients, we talked to them about our history and we talked to them about innovation. They told us that this resonated with them, the idea that ‘We know since you’ve been here since 1901 that you always will be here for us.’ It was interpreted in a very caring, comforting way by our consumers and that was really important for our brand identity.
As we think through the continuation of the transformation, we will continue to tell our story from a marketing communication platform and our brand identity will continue to evolve in-store and online over the next several months. But beyond that, ultimately, the brand transformation for Walgreens is, ‘How do we show up in a more relevant way to our consumers every day?’ And that is, in addition to the marketing communications, the products we sell, the services we offer and ultimately the care that’s delivered by our team members. That is ultimately the journey that we’re on, and this brand transformation provides the lighthouse for us to move forward.
youtube
Why does the “Care Stories” campaign bring the pharmacist out from behind the counter?
Our pharmacists are at the heart of our business. We have 27,000 highly-trained healthcare professionals and they’re delivering care every day to patients in many, many ways. And we continue to look at opportunities to expand that care and how that’s delivered, whether that is recently expanding to 3,000 new private consultation rooms as well as having an innovative feature on our mobile app with 24/7 pharmacy chat. Through these Care Stories we are focused on our real pharmacists, our team members, our customers—and all of them are really going back to what the brand stands for and has always stood for—trust and care and accessibility.
youtube
A great example is “Caring Through the Storm,” which shows how Walgreens supported families and communities impacted by Hurricane Harvey—this idea of them being there and our pharmacists and our team members as first responders to help with the immunizations but also to care for patients.
Beyond that we have another story around a friendly face and it tells a story of a patient who’s HIV-positive and the trust that he’s established with his local Walgreens pharmacist and the relationship that they have. So we will continue to tell these stories and again tell the stories about our team members caring for patients and our team members caring for each other.
youtube
We view this brand campaign as a continuation of a transformation that Walgreens has been on for several years. It really signals the next phase. We’re responding to the changes in the health care and the retail landscape, and how we continue to meet consumer and patient needs in a very modern way. There are many examples of how we do that, whether that is our vast network of specialized pharmacies that provide expert training to our pharmacists in disease states from HIV to oncology or how we’re continuing to refine our offer in order to better fit the needs of consumers.
youtube
We recently introduced our Nice (private) brand, which is a product brand that offers organic and non-GMO products. It’s around continuing that relevance from an omnichannel standpoint. We’ve expanded a very significant partnership with FedEx so more than 7,500 locations offer package pickup and drop-off. The brand transformation is really the opportunity for us to accelerate and continue this transformation and how we move forward.
With all the talk right now of Amazon entering this space, how do you and your company view this possibility and how do you see the new campaign and the ongoing transformation helping to defend if they do enter the marketplace?
I would say that obviously, we keep a very close eye on the competitive landscape. From Walgreens’ perspective, we’re confident in the business strategy that we have laid out and that we’re executing on today. We appreciate that the industry is rapidly changing and the brand transformation that we continue to move forward with is really signaling an acceleration of how we improve and develop and transform our customer offer.
I’d also point out that as we think about the products and services and how we go to market, Walgreens is a very innovative company and has been innovating since the beginning. Whether that is inventing child safety caps in 1968 to helping pioneer drive-thrus and 24-hour pharmacy, but even more recently our digital capabilities and our mobile app, which has had over 50 million downloads by consumers. We’re also really proud of the fact that it’s five-star rated in both the Apple and Android stores. We view this as very strong evidence, and something that we will continue to innovate on in order to be relevant to consumers.
Who is your target customer and how is Walgreens meeting their evolving needs?
As we consider the brand positioning, the target would be—from a brand perspective—Gen X. It could be a mother and caregiver who is looking after her family and also potentially starting to look after her aging parents who may have chronic conditions or other health needs. In this world of fast-paced, limited time, she’s really looking for help to manage all of these different responsibilities. And we believe that this is a very strong role that Walgreens can play, again rooted in the heritage and the history and the expertise from pharmacy.
But how does that also translate into being able to provide that trusted advice through the other products and services that we offer? So we’ve expanded and elevated our beauty offering, now in over 3,000 stores, and that’s been complimented with the addition of beauty consultants that are trained and there to help customers as they come in in order to give them unbiased advice in order to help them in their shopping experience.
We have leveraged best practices and learnings of Walgreens and Boots Alliance, so we continue to expand our global brand and our branded product offerings from Boots Number 7 to Soap and Glory and most recently we’ve introduced some brands specifically focused around millennials with Sleek and CYO. So we get a lot of fantastic capabilities that have been in market for a while within Boots that we have been expanding and bringing to market here (in the U.S.) with Walgreens.
youtube
Over the past few years we’ve taken several steps along this journey in order to help our consumer. We recently completed in 1,500 stores a simplified product assortment, and that was really around how can we, as experts, better curate the product selection in order to help our consumers, whether they are in our stores or online.
Beyond that we’ve also been piloting additional services from a healthcare perspective, whether that is urgent care services—we now have several stores with diagnostics and lab services—and optical (center) pilots in a handful of stores. These are all ways that we’re looking and learning and investigating how we can deliver even more services and be more relevant to our consumers.
As we think about the next phase of the transformation, it is around the total consumer offer. So while we are piloting healthcare services we also believe in the relevant offer from a retail perspective and we’re continuing to curate that assortment in order to deliver on consumers’ needs, and we think the two are very complementary and both important to our future.
And what are you doing on the mobile front to create a seamless omnichannel experience, and what role does your loyalty program play in the brand transformation?
As we thought about the brand relaunch, the loyalty program was absolutely a key component that helped inform both how we thought about the brand positioning but also how we continue to evolve our offer. We have over 90 million active members in our loyalty program. Understanding how consumers shop and what they prefer, we’re able to interpret that to deliver more relevance. It really supports this idea of curation and how we move this forward.
We are continuously looking at ways to create more value-add and improve the customer experience through our mobile and digital apps. In 2011 we invented ‘retail by scan,’ which is unique and a really compelling proposition where consumers can scan their prescription bottles in order to refill any of their descriptions from the store. We’ve continued to progress and innovate, whether it’s the ability for consumers to receive personalized deals and offers, or how we have continued to enhance our photo capabilities, which is a fantastic omnichannel capability where consumers can very easily transport their photos on their phone into prints or services or other merchandise.
We continue to innovate on mobile in order to help consumers better manage their health and their prescription regimen, and that would include in the past year the ability for consumers to track their prescription refill through the refill process and understand where the prescription is from a timing standpoint—and then as a follow-on, include helpful and important tools in order to help remind them to stay adherent on their medications.
It all goes back to the idea that underpins the entire campaign. Something that we’re proud of and believe, and has always been part of Walgreens, is that behind every prescription is a person. And at Walgreens our focus is to treat every single customer with the care and attention that they deserve. We have fantastic team members that we’re very proud of, these trained experts, and we really are proud of what they do every day in order to help patients and customers and communities across America.
