New Found Glory – Catalyst
Flash back to the year 2004 for a bit. Several pop-punk, emo and hardcore bands have been signed to major label deals, CDs are still selling in waves, and it’s an ultra-exciting time for this scene of music. New Found Glory came in riding a major high after their most successful record, Sticks and Stones, blanketed the pop-punk scene with great singles like “My Friends Over You” and “Head On Collision” getting some airplay on MTV’s popular Total Request Live (TRL). Enter Catalyst. The record was set up for success as well with a bulletproof lead single of “All Downhill From Here” that wasn’t going to do anything to dissuade longtime fans of NFG from liking the new material. Catalyst had a harder edge to it, starting with the hardcore-esque gang vocals of “Intro” that bled into the lead single, while the guitars just felt heavier in general throughout the LP. While this album had a mix of styles and sounds that were brought forth, and musically it’s a bit all over the place, it’s hard to not admit that this is still one of the band’s strongest albums to date. Other early standouts, like “This Disaster,” are punchy, with Chad Gilbert’s guitars matching the punishing percussion from Cyrus Bolooki in masterful fashion. As Jordan Pundik ponders, “All my life I’ve been looking for the answers / To the questions she never asked and / We never planned on this disaster / When will I let it go?” it’s hard to not relate to the conflict in the lyrics. The speedy punk rock of “Truth Of My Youth” remains a staple of New Found Glory’s sets to this day, and allows for the band to get the crowd moving to the tones they set forth. Catalyst featured some interesting single choices, like the ballad of “I Don’t Wanna Know” that leaned more into the adult pop that the band perfected on Coming Home, while they enlisted James Dewees for some keyboards on “Failure’s Not Flattering.” The latter seemed to accelerate the band’s sound, while some found the ballad falling a bit flat in the hard-nosed approach of the album as a whole. Dewees would later tour with New Found Glory for a bit to lend keys/synths to the band’s trademark pop-punk sound. Middle album cuts like “Your Biggest Mistake” are fairly simplistic in their construction, but they continued to blend hardcore gang vocals with the pop-punk sound to round out NFG’s repertoire. The spiraling guitar riff from Gilbert on “Doubt Full” allowed for bassist Ian Grushka to pulsate alongside his bandmates with precise riffs, while Pundik sings on the chorus, “When it feels like I’ve already been there / Sounds like I’m preaching the choir / If it looks like it won’t work out / I’m the one, the one full of doubt.” While other tracks like “Over the Head, Below the Knees” are a bit somber in their delivery and a mid-tempo song of “Ending In Tragedy” could’ve benefited from better sequencing in the tracklisting, or even been better off as a B-side. Things take a turn for the better on “At Least I’m Known For Something,” that continues to take a heavier stab at New Found Glory’s pop-punk sound that is truly showcased well on their Kill It Live recording. “No News Is Good News” is another example of when the style that the band were going for works best, while “I’d Kill To Fall Asleep” largely plays out like late-album filler. The closing ballad of “Who Am I” features up-tempo verses, while the chorus takes a more introspective turn as Pundik wonders, “So who am I? / Don’t say it’ll stay this way forever.” The other B-sides that were recently revisited on the first vinyl pressing of Catalyst like “Whiskey Rose,” “Radio Adelaide,” and “Constant Static” would’ve worked better in the sequencing of the main album had they replaced some of the unnecessary mid-tempo cuts towards the back half of the album. But hey, as strong as these B-sides are, it’s only a further testament to showing that New Found Glory brought their A-game to the studio and writing sessions that became Catalyst. --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep… https://chorus.fm/reviews/new-found-glory-catalyst/

For more than two decades, South Florida’s New Found Glory have been winning over fans with their uplifting brand of pop-punk music, and that was just as clear as ever last night at PlayStation Theater.

Liner Notes (March 24th, 2024)
This week, we try to catch up on two weeks of music and add a whole bunch of first impressions (Sum 41, The Early November, Strung Out, and more). The supporter Q&A post can be found here. If you’d like this newsletter delivered to your inbox each week (it’s free and available to everyone), you can sign up here. A Few Things * It’s been a few weeks since I last wrote a newsletter. Last Monday was my, audible sigh, forty-first birthday. So, the past few weekends have been tied up with quite a bit of family time on top of the usual errands, and I just ran out of hours to sit down and write. I don’t know how to put that idea of being 41 into words. Last year had me feeling things, and this year was a little more of the same. It went by faster. My hair is getting a little grayer. But I still have my family and health and consider myself extremely lucky. Most of my gifts were records or band hoodies (shocking), but Hannah got me some of the New Found Glory Coffee, and I was shockingly impressed with it. A lot of “band coffee” I’ve tried in the past has been over-roasted or very clearly not fresh. This was neither and had an excellent flavor to it. Would recommend. My mom gave me a few of these vinyl record containers, and they’re fantastic. Perfect for stacking, and I’m using them to store some of my overstocks that won’t fit on the shelves (I know, I know). I also had a pretty incredible steak dinner and added some albums to my collection, which I’ve wanted for a long time. The funny thing is, after just a couple of years of putting band merch on my wishlists and now multiple holidays and birthdays passing, my wardrobe has more band-related clothes in it than I ever did back in the AbsolutePunk heyday. And I’m not complaining; I’ve embraced becoming that guy. * I was enthralled with this article on the “two-handed bowler,” and I’ve never followed that sport at all. Fascinating stuff. And this podcast episode with Howard Benson talking about producing Hellow, Rockview and it being one of the first albums ever recorded using ProTools was great. In Case You Missed It * Lauren Mayberry – “Change Shapes” * Cyrus Bolooki on New Podcast * Interview: Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World * Review: Yellowcard / Hammock – A Hopeful Sign * Ben Folds Announces New Tour * New Interview With Green Day * Review: Blink-182 – One More Time… * Sharp Eyes – “Past Your Best” (Video Premiere) * Interview: Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy * Albums in Stores – Mar 22nd, 2024 Music Thoughts * Interesting articles jumped to the top of the popularity list last week. What spiked those in particular? I’ll see if I see anything interesting in the referral stats. * OK, let’s start with music from two weeks ago. Kacey Musgraves released Deeper Well, and I think it’s a welcome return. I tried, I did, but I could not get into her previous album at all. This has a very lovely, breezy feel to it. Some of the lyrics don’t work for me (the gravity bong line pulls me out every time), but the whole album is like a warm spring evening. Comforting. Justin Timberlake’s new album is also better than his previous one, but not by much. It’s too long. Bloated. In massive need of restraint and editing. There are individual songs on it that I like, but as an album, I find it a bit of a slog to get through. * This week we have The Gaslight Anthem dropping History Books (Short Stories) and my word is it good. Produced by Butch Walker? A cover of “Ocean Eyes”? A reworked version of “Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts”? Like, come on. An embarrassment of riches here. The full thing is a win, top to bottom, and add me to the chorus of people hoping Butch will produce a full-length from these guys at some point. Ruston Kelly’s collection of b-sides, Weakness, etc., is just as impressive. I’ve been playing both of these back-to-back all weekend. * And now for a string of first impressions: Sasha Alex Sloan’s upcoming album, Me Again, reminds me a lot of Kacey’s new album. It has that… https://chorus.fm/features/articles/liner-notes-march-24th-2024/

Hello, Hello, Hello!
It’s been a quick minute since we last posted anything new but the great news is, we’re finally out of our hiatus!! Woo hoo! What better way to come out of a hiatus than to have an interview with one of my all time favourite drummers from a band that helped create the soundtrack to my teens.
If you were born in the late 80s / early 90s then you will know that New Found Glory is one of the greatest pop-punk bands to ever exist. Their catchy but meaningful lyrics suit every mood and if you haven’t listened to them before, where the hell have you been?
Since I won’t make it along to Slam Dunk Festival, I’m super happy that I still got to get this interview (Thanks, Anna!), as a drummer myself, I have looked up to Cyrus Bolooki for around 20 years now so here’s a quick interview with the man himself. Thanks again, Cyrus!
1. New Found Glory have just released From The Screen To Your Stereo 3 on May 3rd, are there any songs you thought of that did not make the cut?
We’re constantly thinking of songs from movies that we could cover, and yes, sadly some songs just don’t seem like they’d translate well. Perfect example is “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion)” from the movie St. Elmo’s Fire. Ian (our bass player) really wanted us to cover that song, but when we were starting to think about this 3rd edition of From The Screen To Your Stereo and the other songs that we were going to include, we felt like that song just wouldn’t fit with the others we were picking to be on the album. There were also loads of great songs from Disney films that we considered but ended up not pursuing for similar reasons. I mean the songs in Moana are pretty catchy, aren’t they?
2. The last UK shows involved the sets being made up of playing albums from start to finish, what can fans attending Slam Dunk expect? Will the band ever play ‘Let It Go’ and push Jordan to hit that high note again?
Great question! We’ve just finished creating our set for the festival, and I can’t wait to get out there and perform it! Although we won’t be playing any full albums this time, you can be sure you’ll hear songs spanning practically our entire catalog, including some new covers. It’s going to be high-energy from the start, and I guarantee we won’t disappoint! As far as hearing “Let It Go” live, we have actually already performed that song at a performance just last week, so never say never…
3. I have grown up with New Found Glory, I’m 30 now and I can listen to songs that can still put me right back to certain points throughout my teens. I’ve grown up and obviously you all have too, is it difficult at all to keep the NFG sound and relate to the teens listening while maturing?
I think we have an advantage where since we’ve been doing this for so long, we don’t really have to consciously think about whether our music will relate or not. The NFG sound is something that is inherently in us, and as long as we enjoy and have fun with our songs while writing and performing them, so do others. Plus, we write about concepts that we view as pretty universal – relationships, the struggles of keeping them and losing them, and how they can affect your life. These are things that no matter how young or old you are it’s pretty safe to say that you have or will experience similar situations and something we sing about will be relatable to your own life.
4. NFG have played Slam dunk before, what is your favourite thing about the festival and who do you recommend people should check out?
I think anyone that has played (or even attended) a Slam Dunk will say the same thing – the lineup is absolutely smashing, year in and year out. I have no clue how the organizers are able to assemble so many amazing bands, and this year is no exception! I’m finding it hard myself to figure out who to see. There are not only great bands but also a lot of touring friends, so practically everywhere I turn there will be someone that I know, like a huge family reunion, you know? I think with such a massive lineup, everyone should make it a point to find a new up-and-coming band to discover, or go see that band you haven’t seen in years…just do something different at this year’s festival, so you’ll go home with memories that won’t soon be forgotten!
5. You have been a band for over 20 years, what do you think has been the thing that has kept you’ll going for so long? It’s rare to see bands reach such an achievement.
Thank you for the kind words. Honestly, I think a lot has to do with the fact that we’ve all been doing this for over 20 years. Since we all were there in the beginning and still here now, we can always reflect back on our journey and how far we’ve come, and that’s an easy way to ensure that no little issue gets in the way of the big picture, the fact that we were able to start a band in our parents’ garage and now, 20 years later, be playing some of the biggest stages in countries all over the world!
6. It’s going to be a quick visit to the UK think time round and then you’re headed back to the US to tour, can you tell us more about that for our international readers?
Definitely! We super excited to be heading out on tour in US with Real Friends, The Early November, and Doll Skin. We have some cool surprises in store for fans, and just like our Slam Dunk set, this set will be full of songs from all over our catalog and include some songs that people rarely hear us play. Excited to go out and play a few of these new cover songs for people as well!
7. What are New Found Glory’s plans for the rest of the year? Can we expect another visit to the UK?
We’re already planning more shows, and surprisingly also already thinking about recording a new album, so that’s in the works for the rest of the year. As for the UK, you never know when we’ll make a visit, so keep your eyes open and ears to the ground for news of us returning, hopefully again this year!
8. To finish up, is there anything you’d like to say to those reading?
To have the support of so many people for over 20 years is just amazing, and the UK will always hold a special place in our hearts. This was the first place where I think we realized that we were popular…arriving at the train station in Leeds back in 2000 to find fans waiting for us was something we will never forget. And, we’ve had some of our most memorable shows to date in the UK, including some of these Slam Dunk appearances. Can’t wait for this year’s festival, and I hope that everyone out there gets to see us and has a great time at Slam Dunk Festival 2019!
Thanks again, Cyrus!
Thank you!
