What are their dynamics like with each other?

Aw HELL YEAH group dynamics!

I've simplified them into 5 categories that sort of speak for themselves, though I should specify that everyone here gets along great so the 'Friends' category is for close friendships specifically. As for the 'Siblings' category, it's for siblings and 'sibling-like' relationships.

Scratch and Grounder already viewed each other as siblings as we all know, but after some time of D.U.F.U.S. living with them and looking after them in different ways, they started to see him as an older brother figure. Both of them are terrified of thunder and Doof was the first to try to help them with it. He has watched their Edgar Eagle VHS tapes with them countless times and lets them talk about the show at length. The twins look up to him ; and he's grown to care about them like family.

Coconuts was somewhat jealous of this relationship for a time, but when others joined the Sanctuary it greatly eleviated those feelings.

The other family unit is Bocoe, Decoe, and Bokkun. Shocking, I know. Bocoe and Decoe have been a couple for years at this point, long before they were abandonned and kicked out by Eggman. They're deeply affectionate towards each other and are very rarely seen apart ; if ever. They also built Bokkun! Eggman wanted a messenger robot but couldn't be bothered to build one himself (he'd much rather work on his giant fighting mechs), so he drew up some quick plans and handed the task off to his two underlings. Bocoe and Decoe took a few liberties but Bokkun was eventually born and they instantly grew attached to their little boy.

Speaking of their little boy, Bocoe and Decoe are lucky to have quite a few people in the Sanctuary who enjoy looking after him. Scratch and Grounder particularly like the little guy ; and so does Cubot once he joins the group. D.U.F.U.S. occasionally helps with the babysitting as well.

Finally, the friendships!

Scratch and Bocoe' friendship was born from something the two agreed on a long time ago. They both have people they care deeply about ; people they cannot let anything happen to. So Scratch and Bocoe agreed that if something happened to either of them, the other would help take care of their family. From there however, this simple agreement grew into a a close friendship: they could understand each other ; what it's like to have a family to look after.

Coconuts was always a bit of a loner- while a part of Grounder and Scratch's family, he never considered them as his siblings and they never considered him one either. He appreciates Bocoe and Decoe, but doesn't relate to them in terms of their relationship to one another or their roles as parents. But when Orbot- someone who had been hurt by their creator in similar ways and still struggled with remnant feelings of loyalty towards him ; something Coconuts himself had experienced in the very beginning ; joined the Sanctuary, the two naturally gravitated towards each other. They can spend hours talking about nothing and while Orbot can't eat, he greatly enjoys helping Coconuts cook.

Cubot and Grounder have a much more lighthearted, fun kind of friendship. They're two dumbots just out to have fun. Cubot thinks Grounder's many integrated tools are sooo cool ; and Grounder thinks Cubot's ideas are genius and amazing (which... compared to Grounder's... Yeah Cubot probably is capable of genius-level thinking). They particularly enjoy walking through the yet unexplored parts of the Sanctuary and try to map it out to see if they can find anything useful.

What jobs do the robo roommates perform to keep the place running? I'm running under the assumption that they all have their own lil niches

You're right! Everyone has their own little specialty and role in the base!

Scratch and Grounder are essentially handymen. They're not good with the more complex and capricious tech, but they know how to keep the lights and heating and plumbing and any of the other basics of the Sanctuary running- Grounder's many integrated tools are a great help with that. Additionally, the twins have a deal with Coconuts to take on all of his cleaning duties, as a peace offering after the many not-so-nice things they did to him before Robotnik abandonned them.

Coconuts is the house cook and by Gaia his cooking is good. Now yes, the robots don't need to eat. But they can. No one really knows why Robotnik/Eggman gave so many human-like features to his robots like being able to eat and cry and feel cold ; maybe he was bored. Or lonely. Or both. Either way, Coconuts picked up cooking because no one else was any good at it and not only is he a great cook, he thoroughly enjoys it.

D.U.F.U.S. having the ability to shapeshift into anything ; he can do just about any job. The main one is disguising himself as a Mobian (his mobiansona(??) is a green gaur named Duffy) and going shopping for food and batteries in the nearby towns (Coconuts sometimes accompanies him, wearing a very non-suspicious black cloak). When not out on errands, Doof helps wherever he can and mostly sticks around Scratch and Grounder doing upkeeping and basic repairs.

Bocoe and Decoe brought the biggest change to the Sanctuary as they were not only designed to be pilots ; but also and most importantly mechanics. They're essentially robot doctors ; in charge of keeping everyone else "healthy" and functionning properly. They also try to give the other bots upgrades that might make day-to-day life easier (for example, upgrading Scratch, Grounder and Coconuts so they can run on more efficient rechargeable batteries instead of big, clunky, non-rechargeable batteries). They also take care of the more complex tech in the base like the Eggnet computer and surveillance system and build new equipment as needed.

Bokkun's only job is to be a kid and be cute and eat junk food. He's very very good at all three. Occasionally he also gets asked to do "deliveries", which is pretty much just bringing someone a wrench or announcing that dinner is ready across the base.

Orbot and Cubot don't really have a job yet as they've only just arrived in the Sanctuary. Cubot does seem to like hanging around Scratch, Grounder and D.U.F.U.S. while Orbot prefers working with Bocoe and Docoe as well as Coconuts, so this might continue in the future.

He doesn't appear to be aware of his past as a human but still seems to recognize D.U.F.U.S. and drops by every year to see him, rest and stuff himself full of bread before migrating south.

Some little scenes that happen in the Robo Roommates AU that I think about every now and then

D.U.F.U.S. looking after Scratch and Grounder when they get scared during a thunderstorm. He helps them build an "anti-thunder-fort" (basically a pillow fort) and stays with them until the storm is over. (They're technically the reason he was able to free himself from obeying Quark, so he's gotta look out for them every now and then)

Orbot teaching Coconuts how to play chess. Coco was so embarassed about not knowing how to play but Orbot was very patient with him and is very happy to now have someone to play with (besides Doof, who takes every game way too seriously). He even lets Coconuts win every now and then to boost his confidence.

Either Bocoe or Decoe carrying Bokkun around in a baby sling on their backs. Bokkun's fine, he's just upset about something and wants a hug but would never admit to it ; so one of his dads just picks him up and carries him around instead.

i keep thinking why did sonic not triple spin out of dufus' cage form. even if dufus really is that though, sonic wouldn't know unless he try. and this sonic in particular isn't shy of destroying sentient robots that can talk.

being captured could have been so off-setting that sonic needed some time to process what just happened. the subversion of expectations was unlike anything else that sonic has experienced yet. and since getting gotcha'd is a rare occurrence for him, it isn't too unreasonable to think that he got angry at himself; him and tails' facial expressions before the scene change backs this up.

it also is possible that sonic was worried about the capabilities of dufus if he tried to cut through him. as triple spinning through dufus' cage bars does count as applying physical damage, such an attempt would rightfully give dufus a reason to retaliate, and as hostages held within, they had to play safe.

but anyway. the existence of a robot that even the most casually destructive sonic of them all wouldn't dare to destroy is pretty cool.

scratch and grounder want fans. every time they got tricked into believe that they had fans from the show by sonic, they reacted very positively, be it being on radio, on muscle show, or on receiving letters from fans. i think they can make it with their comedic instincts but getting started part of becoming famous on live shows would be a challenge for them.

sonic would unironically help them if it'd get them off the path of robotnik's subordinates; this sonic also does not like being bored and anything would be interesting if he gets a break from having to deal with robotnik. not only that, he's gotta make up for tricking scratch and grounder into disappointment, too.

but s&g aren't going to ask sonic by themselves; if there's any it would be dufus they're gonna seek help from, as badniks are often not in good terms with each other, let alone no purpose built badnik is available. even better; dufus can provide them stage equipments by becoming the stage. dufus also is a bored man and would be willing to do anything as much as sonic.

dufus can definitely criticise s&g, but would talk about it in a rounder way. he doesn't want to disappoint them. but sonic knows better that s&g need to be conveyed things more directly from much longer experience dealing with them, and will chime in into the conversation. (relatively) harsher words will come out of sonic's mouth, and s&g will listen. while their obliviousness has often been their downfall, it's helping this time as they're listening to anything that's being told to them.

i think dufus is the only robot that is safe from repercussions from acting on his own free will. all other robots are either designed by robotnik or built with singular purpose without sentience in the universe. dufus' creator went mental and went south for the season and is unlikely to come back.

aosth had a few extremely potent characters that showed up exactly once. dufus must be one of them, along with sucker, dream meister, slimey, and katella. dufus must be living the rest of his life on relatively easy mode thanks to that, and would definitely be willing to spend his time in whatever way, which quite possibly would include helping other robots.

I have a few headcanons ; at the moment mostly about Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and the Robo Roommates AU since that's what I'm brainrotted over ; but I also have a handful for the main cast too!

I feel like everyone headcanons Eggman as bisexual thanks to the Sonic Fandub- and I agree. I mean in AoStH he got a crazy scientist duck boyfriend and a few episodes later built himself a robot wife

For Robo Roommates, I have a tendency to hc robot characters as either pan or aroace no matter the fandom. So for the AU it goes: Pan: Scratch, Grounder, Bocoe, Decoe AroAce: Coconuts, D.U.F.U.S., Orbot Haven't really decided/feel strongly about Cubot and Bokkun.

The hc for Henrietta being trans comes from my friends on Discord pointing out that, yeah, female turkeys aren't supposed to have that big tail display.
