3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)

oh man, what a good question! i feel like mostly my answer for this is not necessarily a scene but an entire fic, that i only haven’t attempted bc it would be too much work, lol

the big ones, a short list:

a warehouse 13 season 3/buffy season 5 crossover where they meet in their respective finales (i have a color-coded spreadsheet set up for this that i haven’t done anything with for years)

a warehouse 13/lost girl crossover that assumes charles (hg’s brother) eventually becomes vex

but i guess on a scene-level, the ones i never seem to write quite the way i want them are usually confrontations. that’s why you get two fics worth of beau and jester hashing out their feelings post-essek revelation in their fancy clothes. i tend to shy away from confrontation, in fic and real-life, or else the writing kind of takes its own path before i get to write it the way i envision it. one of these days i’ll write an argument exactly the way i want it to play out, but not today!

i also have instances where i don’t write things bc someone else got there and wrote it first, and (usually) wrote it better. scenes that fall into that category for me are 1) theo meeting jamie (sometimes also dani), 2) viola’s take on dani/jamie post-bly, 3) beau and jester hashing out their feelings taking canon beauyasha into account. i know, i know, that everyone will read the same story twelve times; that’s why we’re all here. but i only get the inspiration to write something really when i think i have something new to add, and i don’t want to seem like i’m copying someone else’s story

most recently, there was a lot more i wanted to write for ayda and fabian in my d20 big bang fic. i started homebrewing a system for transitioning within the world of fantasy high intending to give fabian a lot of exposition to explain his experience, and it just didn’t happen. that thing was long enough already, lol

(that’s the third category of Scenes I Haven’t Written: things i haven’t written bc i need to confront it on a personal level and i’m just.....not there yet)

i think generally, and this is probably felt by a lot of writers, my pieces end up two steps to the left of where i thought they would. i felt that really acutely with all my danbeau fics, which is probably why i wrote so many so fast and then kind of fizzled out.

i know that makes it sound like i feel dissatisfied with my fics but on the whole i don’t! i’d call it, like, more unfinished than dissatisfied, which is definitely why i’m still writing twelve and a half years later

- Who cooks normally? - They both know how (though Carol has to regain some memories when she gets back) but Maria is so good at southern cooking that it's really a given that she cooks most of the time. Carol helps, though, and always does the cleanup. Maria's parents cook a lot too. They're a family. 😊

- How often do they fight? - They like to joke around and play fight with each other because it's part of their relationship but serious arguments are very rare and usually about very serious topics, driven by love, concern, or a sense of duty/honor.

- What do they do when they’re away from each other? - Maria works and tinkers and hey being a mom is a full-time job! Carol has her hands full being a cosmic superhero but she never misses a video chat or a chance to come back home for a stay, no matter how short. They are each other's home and always miss each other.

- Nicknames for each other? - They still call each other by their last names sometimes because old habits and at this point it feels normal and familiar in a happy way. Once Carol is back and her memories are returning, she just wants Maria to call her Carol whenever she can because it feels good to be herself again, and she was always completely herself with Maria. But when they're being all soft, it's usually "baby" for both of them.

- Who is more likely to pay for dinner? - Probably Maria just because Carol doesn't always have Earth currency on her lol. And Earth has so many currencies just on its own, meanwhile some galaxies have just one.

- Who steals the covers at night? - They have the opposite problem. Carol tends to kick the covers off most of the way because she runs hot.

- What would they get each other for gifts? - Carol brings Maria awesome tech and maybe some accessories and such from other planets. Maria likes getting Carol retro gifts or throwbacks from the past to help Carol feel comfortable again and remember things.

- Who kissed who first? - Before the crash, it was sort of a mutual lean-in with Maria making the final move. After Carol comes back, she is the one to kiss Maria first.

- Who made the first move? - They were always inevitable so it's hard to say but Maria gave Carol the go-ahead.

- Who remembers things? - Wow this hurts lol. Maria at first, but once Carol starts remembering and relearning things, she never forgets them again.

- Who started the relationship? - They probably couldn't tell you because it was like they were together way before they actually knew they were or made it official and yet they always kinda knew? Again, they were inevitable and always family.

- Who cusses more? - Carol, and Maria scolds her for it even though she's one to talk. But she controls it better because of Monica. There is definitely a swear jar.

- What would they do if the other one was hurt? - Hell hath no fury like either of them after you've hurt their wife. They spent years thinking they lost each other... it can't and won't happen again. But ultimately they would nurse the other one tenderly back to health and probably annoy the other by hovering too much.
