2. rest stops on highways

Luna stretched her arms high above her head once her and Dani finally pulled over to break. For a moment there she thought she could’ve survived on snacks and music for another hour, but it was nice to take it easy, if only for a moment. They still had three hours ahead of them, and they’d already gone for three hours. Halfway was kind of the perfect time.

“I love road trips,” she mused, looking out over the area. The rest stop was a cleaner facility than some of the places she’d been before. Practically empty, too, with only a few cars scattered across the parking lot. The street lights had only just flickered on, and the sound of cars on the highway acted as background noise. Luna sighed, crossing her arms as she leaned against the car. “Sometimes the break from routine is just what you need.”

While Dani finished her own stretches, and began searching for something in her bags packed tightly away in the trunk of the car, Luna stared out at the highway. She looked in the direction they came from, and the direction they were going, amazed at how she felt they could just go anywhere they wanted. The world was their oyster. All they had to do was find their adventure. 

Shaking herself from her thoughts when Dani nudged her shoulder, she smiled and looped her arm through Dani’s, walking side by side toward the bathrooms. Anticipation bubbled inside her for the rest of their journey, ready to swap more stories and try to keep the other awake as they continued onward. What they would do when they reached the end of the trip, she didn’t know, but that was half the fun of it. All she knew for sure was that she liked it being just the two of them, seeing what was out there for them to make memories out of. “We should do this more often,” she mentioned to Dani, her eyes falling on the miles of empty road ahead of them when they finally pulled out. “I don’t think I’d mind a little more adventure in my life.”

Two periods of severe instability were the first supernatural war just after she was turned, and the short time she turned her humanity off in London. Now, it certainly wouldn’t hurt her to see a therapist, but she’s doing well enough on her own.

If there was one thing that reminded him of his previous state of mind and his human ways back then, it was the terrifying fear of small spaces. Of course, it was all in his head, still until this very day he was mortified of even the thought of being stuck in a small space. “I-...Uh-..” He let out a barely audible mumble, avoiding Danielle’s gaze like the plague, as his sweaty palms rubbed the back of his neck over a million times. “This isn’t an-..Uh-..an ideal situation for me.” He was now oversharing, yet he felt the need to say it, despite how humiliating it was. For crying out loud, he wasn’t human anymore, and he believed to be perfectly sane, however his fingers trembled and panic settled in the pit of his stomach. Taking a deep breath, he tried to stay composed, and actually help them get out of this situation as quickly as possible. Without another word he stepped closer to the doors and forced all his strength into pulling them open. Finally, they cracked beneath the force and opened up slightly, yet not quite enough for them to squeeze through. A hard swallow followed, his eyes lingering upon the doors, his back turned to Danielle. The alarm was already going off, yet no one seemed to be coming for them. “Is it just me or-...or is this place just-...shrinking?” He asked, as he tried to keep inside how weak he felt, how a small, seemingly nonthreatening thing could bring him right back to the fragile state he was in when he was still human.
