SCREW number 1,437 In a conversation about possible places to take my portfolio someone, I don’t remember who at this point (but it was most likely Danny Hellman), said, “Screw Magazine.” I thought the suggestion was a joke. They went on to list a who’s who of current artists doing covers and spot illustrations. They also mentioned that Milton Glaser had done the iconic tongue logo. Done. I produced art for two covers but only one ran. I also did a few spot illustrations including the one here titled, “sex.” Right before the cover ran, the magazine went from two color to four. Rather than just run my art as a two color piece, art director, Kevin Hein freaked out and altered the separations. The hideous green border, the green on the glasses, the poorly covered red area filling the inside the border, coloring on the “brain,” and a bunch of other areas ALL were not mine. Still bums me out twenty-three years later. You can see the red stippling on yellow in the upper right (inside the border) as I originally intended. And yes, you had to do your own separations. I really got into it too. The stippled background was done as part of the seps and not on the OG art. Despite all of that, I love that I can say I did a cover for Screw Magazine. Also, Kevin mentioned that Al Goldstein called me and my art, “weird." Of course, this is something I am quite proud of.
