Good morning my lovelies, I’m down at the seaside for a week. So I thought I’d start the week off by paying homage to the queen on seaside entertainment, Miss Danny La Rue. I may be mistaken but Danny never flight of himself as a drag queen, but more of a female impersonator. However he identified himself as I thought he was marvellous. A true cabaret entertainer of the old school variety. It’s a shame there are no more acts like him out there nowadays. I hope I don’t get strung up for this but here it goes! Ru Paul’s drag race UK will start shortly on BBC3. The American version seems to have taken the world by storm and has produced some fantastic new queens on the scene. However I’m not a fan. I have watched it and to me it’s not drag. Or at least I don’t think it is traditional drag like what I have grown up with and seen over the years. For me drag is an art form where the performer is a caricature of a woman. Overly dressed, flamboyant, plastered in make up and lots of jewellery. The audience knows that the performer is a man pretending to be a woman but let’s the audience know that it’s all an act. I didn’t find that with Ru Paul. There seemed to be too much effort put in to making the performers look, act and perform like real convincing women. I will watch the UK version just to see what the comparison is like? But for now I’ll leave you with some of the best if not the best drag queens in the UK performing or had once performed traditional cabaret style drag. Aiming live, telling rude jokes and tearing to pieces the poor sods on the front rows. I hope one day to join their ranks.
