So in addition to re-watching Forever Knight, I'm also watching Highlander: The Series again. They're basically companion shows because they were on TV at about the same time and address many of the same themes, in addition to both being urban fantasies. Their fandoms were also populated by many of the same people.
I was hugely into Highlander for years and wrote fanfic and was in the fandom and was basically crazy for it, mostly because of Methos, the oldest immortal, but I was also watching it in a time pre-You Tube, pre-torrents, pre-everything. We all taped our favourite eps from tv, but most of us didn't tape the complete shows because that just wasn't feasible in terms of time, space, etc. But obviously at least a few people did, because the shows are online now even though they were never released on DVD (edit: FK was released much later, but as far as I know HL was not).
Anyway, one of the peculiar things about watching Highlander in the late nineties was that, although the show had just finished its original run, for some kind of licensing reason that was never entirely clear to me at the time, season one was never played in Canada. It might have originally been, but every replay of the show started with season 2, and I came in right around the time the show was wrapping up or just slightly after, so I never actually saw season one. This was frustrating to me, but since my favourite characters all come in after season 2 starts I didn't get too worked up about it or go to great lengths to view it. But it was a kind of itch that was was never scratched.
Fast-forward to 2022 and I found HL online, the complete series, including season one. I'm actually enjoying it a lot. MacLeod is a lot less of a pain in the ass, quite a bit more relaxed and less sanctimonious, not to mention not quite so 1 BILLION XP INVINCIBLE. Tessa is actually a lovely character. And Richie is very funny in his younger incarnation, with a lot of his rough edges still there.
The show itself still has some rough edges too, as the writers worked out exactly what the mythos was going to be. For example, the Gathering appears to be happening at the beginning of the show, and MacLeod is convinced that no immortal has long left to live, but that convinction appears to have faded even by season two, since it isn't mentioned again, to my recollection.
But my biggest surprise has been Darius, because Darius is a lot like Methos. He's a priest and Methos isn't, but Methos is a researcher hiding in a secret organization, which is quite similar. Darius, like Methos, is a very old man with a young face, not to mention a former warlord who converts to peace (via Light Quickening, which is very interesting, and I do wonder if that's why Duncan is quicker to forgive Darius his past than he was Methos, because Darius is in some ways an entirely different person, while Methos changed the hard way. That actually makes it more commendable, but the blame still belongs to him as well, and you know Duncan...).
Additionally, Darius is a mentor who can predict Duncan's failings before they happen (although less openly cynical than Methos, he clearly understands the way of the world) exactly as happens on multiple occasions with Methos. Both are people that Duncan looks up to and respects intensely. The only thing missing in the Duncan-Darius relationship is the more casual element of friendship (Methos works very hard to dispel Mac's initial awe, which really backfires later), and that homoerotic tension that was always present between MacLeod and Methos, but other than that... I get the feeling that the show was missing a mentor for Duncan and Methos fit the bill. But while he was clearly conceived as a Darius-remix, Methos is a lot more fun, and seemingly far more of a chameleon than Darius was, in terms of how much he changed over the centuries, as well as a kind of fluid gender identity that was never clearly stated but which was easy to perceive. And because of the nature of his own paradigm shift, which was not a supernatural event, you can still see many elements of darkness in Methos that are seemingly absent in Darius.

How would Dare respond if a basement wife began to isolate themselves/otherwise became noticeably unwell from the psychological trauma of the captivity and Dare being Dare?
Camping trip time. Time to get out into nature, show them some beautiful sights - far the fuck away from anyone else. In a place so isolated the spouse will know full well that running off alone equals death via the elements. Scottish Highlands, most likely. Maybe Lake District. Wouldn't risk putting you on a plane just yet. Only broken spouses get to go to the Great Lakes and Alaska. Reminder that Darius is English, lol, lmfao.
A hobby will be permitted after that. Mostly something harmless, something that you're least likely to hurt yourself or him with. Honestly if you asked him for a pottery table he'd happily put one in his garage for you to use with his supervision (and his tools locked the fuck up). You like plants? As part of the morning routine you and he can do a trip around the house to check on the houseplants he's gotten you, then into the greenhouse out back where he'll let you grow fruit and veg for your meals together. After that, he's off to work and you go back to the basement.
If that doesn't work? Well fuck, here's some antidepressants in your breakfast, hope it works! (They're his prescription, he's severely depressed and will take advantage of it to get you medication but goddamn does he hate talking to Doctors about his mental state. The things he does for love).
If that doesn't work... eh stay miserable then, ya whiny git. He's tried his best to be helpful and empathetic, but if you'd rather handle your health like he does then he won't stop you. He will be sad about the mirror image you're holding up at him every day, though.

I have the idea that nevan and malak would watch a nature documentary in their downtime (new adrastus idea to help them relax and remain somewhat stimulated while remaining calm and entranced)
then a highland cow or a beetle shows up on screen and malak’s eye widen and he focuses on the screen more alertly
"that's... myyy... mm... ffav... favorite. mmmm... favorite..."
and nevan perks up cause it’s?? the first time he’s heard malak speak??
WOHEO Masterlist
OH? MY GOD? It’s not the greatest but I couldn’t not write this… I truly hope I sort of did this idea justice!!
Taglist- @softvampirewhump
cw: hypnosis, pet whump
———————————————————————
The television, glowing bright and glitching with the occasional static, buzzed as a voice droned over the flash of visuals. Prancing, fuzzy animals danced across the screen as someone spoke, the volume too faint to clearly make out.
The two thralls sat and followed along with each next critter in mindless fascination, both far too entranced to digest any actual information.
Malak’s pudgy cheek was slumped against the other’s relaxed shoulder, Nevan’s head lolled to the back of the plush couch they sat atop. Malak was, to no surprise, swaddled in a cradle of a bedspread and curled up, and Nevan was perfectly content with his own singular blanket draped across his lap.
Their similarly glossy vision trailed across the screen dopely as each new image flared up, new knowledge streaming through one ear and out the other.
Adrastus’ go to was always animal or nature documentaries when they and Darius wanted their alone time, without the presence of their respective thralls. Nevan was sure they were in the kitchen then, sweet laughter and low purring music drifting from below the door that separated the pairs.
Nevan wasn’t a fan nor a foe to the vampire's program choices, he was utterly content with whatever his masters were to choose, but he couldn’t deny his delight in knowing Malak just adored the documentaries.
While Malak was never exactly one to show much emotion, his brain being often far too liquidated to do so, it came easy for Nevan to see through the heavenly haze. The way his draped eyes glittered with each new image, the way he subconsciously tipped to the screen in enchantment.
With each slight blink of an eye the screen flickered, almost as if Nevan was skipping through time with every drowsy shut of his lids.
It’d felt as if the two had been watching for hours. Maybe they were. It was completely possible the two were viewing on a repeating loop, and would continue until their masters decided to turn it off, whenever that would be.
Nevan didn’t mind. He would stay there, perfectly positioned and losing himself in the technology, for as long as his masters so pleased.
Even as his brain was stuck a consistent pool of mush, Nevan recognized as a dribble of drool slipped from Malak’s puckered lips, slipping down the supple flesh of his arm.
The older man’s thick flesh and easy breath was a comfortable warmth, that had his body not been so heavy and distant, Nevan would have happily nestled into.
The screen switched again, and the sudden lug of Malak’s head cut a slit in the deep spell Nevan was enthralled under. From the corner of his eye he observed as the other man lifted his cumbersome body, dizzy from the heaviness, and instead of falling back into the cushions, lurched forward.
Ever so carefully Malak stretched out his thick arms, lazily clawing at the television, weak but determined.
Nevan perked as Malak’s lips carefully parted, saliva connecting the bottom and top in a moist string.
Malak’s full brows furrowed in a mix of confusion and awareness, and his eyes grew wide as saucers. “Mm.. ah…” he grunted in befuddled excitement.
Nevan’s clouded vision gingerly drifted further open with compulsion, his head rolling to get a better look at the other thrall. His jaw fell flimsily slack as he attempted to reach into his mind for just this moment.
“That’s… myyy… mm… ffav… favorite.” Malak mumbled, tumbling through a half baked thought to half coherent words. “Mmmm… favorite…” He drawled, urgently grabbed at the screen, fully ignoring the fact that he was several feet away. It didn’t seem to deter his attempts.
His hands flailed eagerly to grasp at something he simply could not, too charmed and captivated by whatever had snatched his full attention, effectively yanking him from brainless mesmerization.
Had Nevan not been so entranced by the man beside him, he may have checked the television, simply to find what he had been so excited over, but he couldn’t bear to pull himself away.
Malak only seemed to slow as the program changed, the monotonous voice inside the screen turning to something else. His face dropped sluggishly, losing his strange spurt of life, and his sound drew to a dissatisfied groan.
Nevan intently watched as Malak’s body drooped once again, arms absentmindedly curling around the plump bull plush in his lap.
He swayed woozily, the enthrallment slithering quickly back and taking it’s hold on him once again. He idly plopped his upper body into Nevan’s lap.
Nevan savored the distant, sweet sensation of shock.
Malak talked.
He spoke words.
No matter how faint or muddled, that didn’t overshadow the magnificent fact.
His sound was unfamiliar, yet somehow exactly as Nevan had imagined it would be.
Soft but deep, a gruff gravel tainting the edges of each word, and yet humming smoothly through one’s ears. Malak’s disordered speech licked his eardrums, a sweet echo that nicely stuck to Nevan’s brain.
He turned his gaze, peering down at the man in his lap, who was rapidly losing conciousness. He hesitantly lifted his weak muscles, placing his slender hand to Malak’s dotted skin.
Malak purred at the touch, nuzzling into it and the lush blanket underneath his head, back in his usual dreamy state.
Would Nevan remember the other man’s voice later, when the documentary was switched off, and so was his mind? When he finally dozed off into unconsciousness, only to wake when the vampires desired to play with his mind once again? He didn’t know.
What he did know for certain, was that the one memory he truly wished to hold onto forever, would have to be the beautiful sound of his best friend’s voice.

hello, do you have any other recs like Rules for a Proper Governess where the fmc is lowkey obsessed with the mmc and/or she falls first?? there is about a million with the other way around but almost none with the heroine losing her mind a little over the hero :////
I dooooo yes! I enjoy an obsessive heroine.
When a Girl Loves an Earl by Elisa Braden is always a go-to obsessed girl rec. The heroine is the most desired debutante of her season, but all she wants is this giant earl, ever since she saw him grab another guy by the throat and lift him bodily off the ground when he was being a dick to another woman (not even the heroine). Which. Same. I get it. So she sets out to seduce him. And when he's disinterested (cold for traumatic backstory reasons) she sets out to trap him into marriage. Also! She has no idea until he's literally dragging her to the altar against his own will that he's Scottish lmao. He was forced to cultivate an English accent when he randomly got the title, but he slips into his natural accent when he's emotional and/or horny, and it's literally one of my favorite things in a Scottish romance can do.
And she's like "oh fuck you're Scottish? Fr?"
The Temptation of a Highlander, also by Elisa Braden, has this as well, though she's less of an active pursuer and just more of a perv (despite her best efforts). The heroine, who's on the run from a stalker and hiding out in Scotland, is just soooo obsessed with how big and strong the hero is, and this manifests in her saying a lot of double entrendres about how bad she wants him to snap her in two. At the dinner table.
Olivia and the Masked Duke by Grace Callaway is this a T. The heroine is about 12 years younger than the hero, and he's friends with her dad, so he's like "oh noooope", but after she sees him spanking another woman she gets sexually wakened and decides to brat her way into winning his heart and his massive dick.
The Duke Identity by Grace Callaway has an inspector hero who's gone undercover as the bodyguard of a crime lord's rebellious granddaughter. He's uptight and she's wild, and one day she looks at him and goes "He is The One". And decides to make him hers.
The Arrow by Monica McCarty has a heroine who's the ward of the hero (he rescued her when she was a kid). He comes home and she's smitten/obsessed, and he's all "nope nope nope" because ward. Her response is "yes yes yes" and the chase is on. McCarty's The Hunter also has a pursuing heroine, this one a fake nun undercover who gets rescued by the hero. He's very "um noooope I am not made for the loving relationship life" and she does not take this lying down. Until she is lying down.
Lord of Danger by Anne Stuart, which I just finished and adored, doesn't have this with the primary couple. However, it DOES have this with the prominent secondary couple (Anne does secondary couples a lot and I looove them). The secondary heroine is the primary heroine's stunning little sister, who's very aware of how beautiful she is and kind of a bratty horse girl rebel. Her brother, the villain of the book (who, full transparency, does want to fuck her and does kiss her against her will at one point—this is treated seriously and I thought, with care) assigns one of his knights as her bodyguard. This knight is celibate because his wife is off across the country cucking him with another guy, and he's like "can I please be a monk" and the villain is all "application denied, go guard my sister because you're the only guy who won't try anything". Unfortunately for him, after some initial bickering, our girl imprints on him and decids that he MUST be hers.
Princess by Gaelen Foley!!!!! (Obsessed with this book.) The twist on this is that the hero, Darius, is in fact aware of the heroine's feelings and returns them... But he is determined not to ACT on his feelings and downplays their intensity to himself and her. Serafina is a spoiled princess, Darius is.... 14 years older... and was essentially picked up as a kid and raised by her parents. The relationship. Is not sibling-like lol. She's obsessed with him and has been pursuing him for years, even though she knows she has to marry another guy for politics. And Darius is all "DON'T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME" until she basically blackmails him into guarding her at a safe house in the countryside following a kidnapping attempt. He shouldn't have taken her hair ribbon!
More "she fell first" and less stalkery:
When the Duke Was Wicked by Lorraine Heath, of course. Grace was infatuated with Lovingdon as a child and was crushed when he married. She thinks she's got it under control and is over him when she asks him to help her find a husband as a friend, but.... nope.....
Regarding the Duke by Grace Callaway. In this one, the heroine and hero have been married for eight years and have two kids. She's totally head over heels in love with him and has been basically since they met, but he's, though cordial, emotionally withholding because he doesn't WANT to love her. They only have sex once a week on a schedule. Though he does. Fuck the shit out of her once a week. It must be said. Anyway, he gets amnesia, as you do, and wakes up like "UMMMMMM SO I DON'T GO DOWN ON MY WIFE UNTIL I GROW GILLS THRICE A DAY? MISTAKE TBH".
Return to Monte Carlo by Cate C. Wells. This is unique in that it's set in the 80s! The heroine impetuously married this frosty Italian businessman. She's a good bit younger and comes from nothing, he's super rich and his snobby family hates her. She's very much in love with him, he's voraciously sexual with her but emotionally distant. So on their first wedding anniversary, she decides she's had enough and leaves his ass. Unfortunately for her, she turns out to be pregnant, and he's not gonna just. Ignore that lmao.
Ever Yours, Annabelle by Elisa Braden. In this one, the heroine was obsessed with the hero (her brother's best friend) when they were kids. Then he had a horrible accident that was somewhat her fault, and they drifted apart. Years later, they reconnect as adults. He realizes... things are different.......
A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah MacLean has another childhood friends and she was besotted situation. This time, the hero comes back into the heroine's life and traps her into marrying him as part of a revenge plot, which wounds her deeply as she was so excited to reconnect with him initially. So now he has to win her over!
In Bed with the Devil by Lorraine Heath. In this one, the hero and heroine meet because he's got a crazy reputation as a rumored murderer and she basically approaches him to kill her friend's abusive husband. It doesn't quite go the way she expected, but he ropes her into My Fair Lady-ing the woman he wants to marry (who, for the record, DOES NOT WANT TO MARRY HIM and makes very clear that she sees him as a brother........ he's just got this delusional white knight syndrom with her....). The heroine falls pretty hard, but the hero stays in denial a good while because of his, again, delusion.

FFXIV Write Day 20- Duel
Tumblr media
The Thanalan sun sat high overhead, beaming its relentless heat down onto the heads of anyone unfortunate enough to be caught beneath it. So it was the case for Darius, stopped on the road just outside of Sandgate by a hulking Highlander man wearing what appeared to be a collection of strategically placed leather straps and wielding what could only be described as a weapon whose maker couldn't decide between making a stupidly large axe or an obscenely heavy hammer, so he slapped one on each end of a big stick and called it a day.
The massive man stood in the middle of the road, grinning widely at the Midlander with barely contained malice. His rust-colored hair was flying in all different directions, matching the wild look in his piercing blue eyes. He stood directly in the middle of the road, strange weapon held in front of him, gripped loosely in both hands.
Darius stood in silence, waiting for the man barring his way to announce his reasons for doing so. His eye scanned the surrounding area; They were standing on a very exposed stretch of road with no cover nearby, so the odds of an ambush weren't terribly likely. If he was going to get shot at, it'd have to be from quite a distance as well. Chances were, whoever this guy was, he was acting alone. Darius locked his gaze back on the Highlander, who just stood there, breathing loudly out of his nose while grinning and exuding menace. Eventually the suspense proved too much for the Midlander, who was the first to break the silence. "So are you-" "Ah been lookin' fer you, Storm Crane!" The Highlander shouted, cutting Darius off rather abruptly.
Darius raised his eyebrows in surprise, not bothering to feel insulted at being interrupted while also being mildly intrigued by the man's approximate knowledge of his identity. "Have you, now?"
"Yer the man what killed me brother!" A single accusatory finger was thrust in Darius's direction, letting the axe head of the hammer-axe combination weapon drop down onto the dusty road with a faint 'shunk' as the blade dug into the packed dirt.
The Midlander sighed, his posture relaxing as he reached up and scratched the inside of his ear with a pinky finger. "Sorry, I kill a lot of people. You're gonna have to be more specific."
"Randbert the Rough!" The Highlander shouted. "Me older brother, an' one o' the toughest, meanest enforcers o' the Corpse Brigade!"
While limiting the possible identity of this murdered brother to the Corpse Brigade certainly narrowed the field of possible individuals, it still didn't give Darius an exact idea of who was specifically being avenged in this encounter. Not that it mattered. The Hyur lazily pulled his finger out of his ear and blew off a bit of excess earwax before letting his arm fall slack, dangling at his side. "Well, he can't have been that tough if he's dead."
That struck a nerve. The Highlander turned a few shades redder as his already wild glare grew wilder, neck veins bulging as his grin contorted into a menacing grimace. "Ye listen here, gobshite. Randbert the Rough was a bleedin' LEGEND! An' I ain't gonna rest 'til his murder is set right!!" The axe-hammer was hefted back up into both hands as the ugly pile of malevolent muscle brandished the heavy weapon over his head, the haft bowing and flexing under the weight of both of its oversized heads. "I, BERTRAND THE BLOODY, CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL, STORM CRANE!"
Darius sighed to himself, part of him was surprised the brash Highlander standing before him had deigned to formally challenge him to a fight instead of just rushing at him, ham-axes blazing. But if he wanted to do things this way. The Hyur's expression remained impassive as he slowly slid his left leg back, turning his body slightly so that his left side was obscured from view. "A duel, huh? Got any special rules you wanna demand?"
Bertrand's grimace shifted back into a grin, though a significantly more crazed grin than before. He ceased his brandishing and took the ham-axe in both hands, pointing the hammer end at Darius, the heavy weapon wobbling unsteadily as the hammer bobbed up and down, threatening to snap the haft at any moment. The Highlander inhaled sharply through flared nostrils and scoffed at Darius's mention of special rules, boldly exclaiming "The only rule is... THERE ARE NO RULES!"
Darius stared blankly at the muscular impediment standing before him. No rules, huh? The Midlander shrugged at the declaration. "Alright." In one swift motion, he reached into his jacket and unholstered a Garlean service revolver from under his left arm before leveling it at Bertrand and firing it once. BANG! The explosive report echoed across the vast sun-blasted scrubland, a cloud of smoke rising up from the barrel of the revolver as Darius slowly lowered it, revealing Bertrand flat on his ass, clutching a bloodied leg with a sole bullet wound in it.
"Augh!!" Bertrand groaned, then inhaled sharply, sucking air through his teeth. "Augh!" He cast an accusatory glare up at Darius, a look of betrayal on his face. "THAT WAS CHEATIN'!"
"You said 'no rules'." Darius replied, spinning the revolver in his hand before flipping it back into its holster under his arm.
"You didn't let me FINISH!" The Highlander barked back indignantly. "I was gonna say, the only rule is there are no rules but also no guns. Obviously."
Darius stared blankly down at Bertrand, and then wordlessly stepped past him, heading onward down the road.
"I'LL GET YOU FOR THIS, STORM CRANE!" Bertrand bellowed after Darius, turning to shout at him but immediately being overcome by the pain in his very superficial leg wound. "Augh!!" He hissed again, turning and clutching his leg. "Auuugh!"
Darius just sighed as he continued on down the road. "It's too hot for this."

Gosh Schwartz’s concept art makes him look so huge!! He looks like a gentle giant, and it makes him being hellbent on revenge kinda scary! Iirc he’s also suuuuper tall, isn’t he? Both him and Auguste :0
And I want that art book too! I wanna see everyone’s heights, at least! But in the meantime, Gilderoy is a head shorter than Auguste and no one can stop me. (And Sazantos is even shorter, because that’s hilarious to me.)
The flatlands ought to be one of the bigger areas of the game tbh, or at least less populated. It’s likely mostly all farmlands! I get it would be a good place to live, thus the cities, but like. That place is all horizontal space and they’re gonna need those farms! Meanwhile the highlands is more densely populated because its mountains, so they also have vertical space they can fill, not just horizontal. Frostlands have to be the least populated, because snow and ice and DEATH. Honestly what was Darius even doing up there it’s too cold :////
Osterra is not a nice place, true, but it has to be somewhat nice to give us such kind characters and so many of them. Clearbrook has to be a fount of kindness, to give us Alfyn. He’s one of the kindest, least selfish characters, period. And Ophilia is super kind! And all the kind people in CotC! There’s lots of darkness in Osterra, but there’s also light. Has to be, to have such wonderful characters.
And I’m gonna give Gilderoy a fear of small spaces and of jail cells. Because MoA was totally missing a torture scene when he was jailed and he was there for days <3 He suffered a lot in there, having his freedom taken and being given so much pain. (And that absolutely has implications when sneaking in thru Riven castle’s jails owo)
Osterra is a dark place, and while I inject lots of fluff, I also make it a bit darker. Because what’s more light without more darkness amirite uwu
(Also, would you like to exchange Discords? Can talk there too! :0)
Really shows just how much "Auguste" let himself go when he was given the ring. Which is kinda sad.
I doubt an art book would talk about heights, just because that's too many characters and there's no real need for that, let's just leave it up to interpretation of the fans! Yes, Auguste is canonly 190cm tall. Personally, I'd say Gilderoy (I think I headcanoned him at 192? But this is just my not so good memory) would be taller than Auguste, but that's just because he looks like a wall to me. (but no one will look more of a wall than Fra or Barrad)
Yeah, that sounds about right with the regions, I can agree with that all! The Highlands also needs to have more locations, because I remember reading in a letter that they state there was multiple little kingdoms, not just Hornburg and Altinia located there. Maybe Kromlud (Aedelgard's kingdom of unknown region) and probably Braystadt (a name mentioned by Lionel, not sure if location name or a person's name, just that he is a "knight of Braystadt" and from the Highlands.) are kingdoms there as well.
Clearbrook has its problems stated in Meena's Traveler Story, so can't forget that. And tbh, I don't really like Alfyn, nor could I paint him as a saint. Ophilia, on the other hand, deserves much good things.
But yes, good idea. Seems interesting to do that. Again, I am glad that mention of dislike has inspired something!
My apologies, I only really give my discord out to very few people. You're welcome to DM here on Tumblr if you like.
