Episode 120.
Yusaku reveals even if he fused with Ai, this wasn't the solution he was looking for, and their individuality wouldn't be preserved, so they must find another way.
(This feels like a jab at ARC-V from Yoshida's side.)
Yusaku states the life is about connections. The specific word he uses is tsunagari:
Which is an older, more neutral term for bonds than Yusei's (and in this series, Aoi's) kizuna, despite having the same etymological origin. This is referenced in the title of this episode Tsunagaru Sekai, Connected World.
(In the meta sense, Links represent the neutral bonds that occur between any people, whereas Synchros represent the specific close bonds between people. This is why they work differently.)
Ai doesn't really like this, since he doesn't have the will to fight anymore, and would prefer a permanent solution.
With his S1 monsters, and with Darkfluid revived from Borreload Furious Dragon's effect, Yusaku Summons Accesscode Talker, but Ai forces a mutual destruction.
The final clash is between Dark Templar Ignister, and Decode Talker, Decode Talker wins by Code Hack's effect (recently physically released in Animation Chronicle 2023). Decode Talker itself was Summoned using Recoded Alive, which was originally used against Revolver.
Ai reveals in all simulations, Yusaku ended up being directly involved in his unintentional causation of humanity's demise. He doesn't state this, but his flashbacks show Yusaku dying to protect him, and not the other way around.
During his presumed death, Ai wonders what Yusaku means the term means, Yusaku says it means "to love people" (term for people is not human-specific), Ai agrees, and says he loved him. Yusaku then returns to real world, and carries the SOLtiS copy of Ai that dueled him, screaming surrounded by copy Ais.
After three months, the epilogue occurs. The big event is Takeru brings Kiku to LINK VRAINS (3.0), which is now a connection hub that connects to all other Virtual Worlds (and as we later find out in Duel Links, to Duel Links).
Ai comes back to life in the final seconds of the episode, though it is unclear where he is. Because he is in eyeball form, people speculate he has revived inside Yusaku's Duel Disk once more.
Mechanics of this revival remain unclear. Supposedly the ending was supposed to be darker (presumably with Ai causing a machine rebellion regardless of the copy Ai plan going off), so this might be the demand of higher-ups.
***
Anyway, the final three Duels of this Season is where the action is, so these were:
**Takeru vs. Roboppi
**Takeru vs. Revolver
**Yusaku vs. Ai
Through this Season, excluding the Duel with copy Ais, Yusaku's only Duel is against Ai at the final, as Ai & Roboppi serve as villain protagonists for the first half.
Takeru getting more Duels than others is obviously because he became far more popular than expected, even though he was specifically designated as the deuteragonist of extremely long S2.

So i saw this drawing by RoyalAcademia on twitter of Yusaku in the outfit Aichi wears during Legion Mate and i really liked it because it suits him and it feels like something Ai would pick out for him so after months of procrastination i finally drew it myself!✨ Bc I've wanted to do that
I can't really draw monsters too well but the card he's supposed to be holding is dark templar @ignister bc well it's symbolic of something that happens in legion mate.

Dark Templar's name symbolism
Aka why Ai is the perfect example of a knight templar
So in addition to being absolutely obsessed with Ai I am also obsessed with Ai’s deck because holy shit is that deck loaded with symbolism it’s beautiful really but the card I’m the most obsessed with is Dark Templar cause duh of course I am it looks very very similar to Decode Talked, Yusaku’s subace (Firewall Dragon is Yusa’s ace I don’t care what Konami says and this is the hill I will die on) because of course it does and its effect is similar yet opposite of Decode Talker except instead of protecting it revives but like its name (specifically its adaptation name change) is what really interested me
At first I thought it was lame that DT’s japanese name was Dark Knight while its english name is Dark Templar like Dark Knight was pretty much the perfect summary to ais character development (character reveal?) so why would they change it to Dark Templar? (aside from being pieces of shits but let’s assume they had a thematic reason) I got bored enough to find out Google essentially defines a templar as a religious knight which I thought was odd but aight an acceptable name change but then but then I came across the knight templar trope while reading through Yubel’s trope page on tv tropes (I was looking for those elusive Jewish wedding/Jaden vs Yubel fusion duel parallels if you can provide them hit me up pls) and oh boy did that trope change the game
I’m just going to list the defining characteristics of knight templar straight from the page because holy fucking shit Ai portrays this trope to a t
“Usually, the Knight Templar's primary step (or objective) to their perceived "utopia" is to get rid of that pesky "free will" thing that is the cause of crime and evil.”
If Ai would have won that duel against Yusaku he would have gotten rid of his free will by scattering it thus dying in the process while utopia wasn’t Ai’s endgame Ai’s existence would have led to a dystopia and preventing that is Ai’s endgame goal
Many Knight Templars are utterly merciless in dealing with those whom they consider evil, and are prone to consider all crimes to be equal.
While Ai didn’t believe that everyone else was evil (save for Queen but he’s not wrong) he did erase those who tried to stand in his way and that’s pretty much what a knight templar does in face he doesn’t erase Aoi instead forcing her to suffer the same fate he has all because she teamed up with Akira to stop him from getting the second sol key (disproportionate punishment to crime)
It's important to note that despite being villainous within the context of the story, Knight Templars fully believe that they are on the side of righteousness and draw strength from it and that their opponents are not. Trying to reason with one isn't much good either, ...
While Ai isn’t a villain he is very much the antagonist of s3 (remember kids villains and antagonists aren’t the same!) and he absolutely could not be reasoned with because he believes that what he’s doing is for Yusaku’s best interest (a trait he shares with Yubel who is definitely a knight templar don’t get me started on the whole fusion thing) of course this doesn’t get revealed until much later on and it’s even revealed that he was doing this mainly to save Yusaku’s life so he definitely drew strength from his motivation
Indeed, it may take them a while to realize that a person with sense and good will really opposes them ...
He knew Yusaku would oppose him (while this doesn’t fit to a t his antagonism was an act so that he could get Yusaku to kill him or commit a homocide/suicide (sorry couldnt’ resist)) hence why I believe his extreme actions was an attempt to goad Yusa into chasing after him so Yusa would end up dueling him and thus forcing him to pick how he dies
One of the few ways to actually change a Knight Templar's mind is to kick their ass down to the ground. ... They won't necessarily join you ...
While this part again doesn’t exactly fit Ai to a t these parts do at least to fact that Ai didn’t reveal the entire truth until Yusa beats him and quite literally knocks Ai down and out (gotta love high stakes children card games) even then Ai still doesn’t try to listen to Yusa’s desires (granted he couldn’t have even if he did wanted to) interesting to note that tvtropes says they’ll probably listen to your story when in this case Yusa listened to Ai’s story and this was sprinkled throughout their duel getting progressively worst as the duel continued
The Knight Templar is often the ultimate incarnation of Light Is Not Good, and in series where Dark Is Not Evil ... If they are still nominally good, expect them to be a Hero Antagonist.
I disregarded everything that didn’t apply to Ai in between these two statements because Ai himself is the dark aspect of the series something he shares with Yusa and obviously he doesn’t believe Yusa and himself to be evil especially Yusa since you know he knows Yusa is actually a good person I included this because Ai was very much originally a hero turned antagonist and this is yugioh it’s the embodiment of light bad dark good (if memory serves me right 5ds is the only series to not follow this trope)
Sometimes, the Knight Templar is an artificially intelligent computer that took its instructions to "protect humanity" a bit too far
I couldn’t resist this was the plot to s3 in a nutshell
... Knight Templars will insist that they're good guys, even the ones that are practically villains, they often aren't completely ignorant of the pain they cause; they simply consider it to be acceptable collateral damage, or regret the means they "must" use to achieve their ends
In this case Ai had noble intentions but insisted on portraying himself as a villain and he expressed regret at having dragged Roboppi with him and causing Roboppi’s demise (sobs)
Given how well Ai suits this trope (it’s almost every single one of their defining features) it’s no wonder that his symbolic monster counterpart is known as both Dark Knight and Dark Templar with Dark being the common element in its name change cause goddang
I lowkey want to do an in depth analysis on Ai’s deck and how they fare against Yusaku’s code talkers cause there has to be a connection but I’m lazy and that requires so much research

Analyzing the cards in relation to the characters that use them
One of the neat things in the Yugioh anime is when you can see a connection between a characters and their cards, deck and play style.
I was watching the card review channel dpYGO(which is really good by the way) when I came across this gem of a comment
Tumblr media
If you look at the Code talkers's link arrows you can see that Decode Talker cant be co-linked to the multiple Code Talkers, similarly as to how Ai is different from the other Ignis.
Also worth of note is how Decode Talker and Dark Templar compare to each other, with their similar looks and stats, but with different effects;with Decode Talker getting stronger and protecting your other cards and Dark Templar bringing the others monsters from the graveyard back to the field(maybe an hint of Ai motivations?).
Anyway...
I love when you can relate a character identity, feelings and how their mind works with the game mechanics.

With all the Digimon Adventure and Yugioh VRAINS I’ve been watching, I thought it would be fun to “evolve” the Ignis. The fact Takhiro Sakurai has a role, and a Takeru in both shows convinced me to do it even more.
For their Rookie stage, it would just be their normal Ignis forms. So this is for Champion, Ultimate, and Mega.
Ai: Decode Talker > Dark Templar > Accesscode Talker
Flame: Powercode Talker > Fire Phoenix > Pyro Phoenix
Aqua: Shootingcode Talker > Water Leviathan > Wonder Heart
Earth: Transcode Talker > Earth Golem > Invalid Dolmen
Windy: Excode Talker > Wind Pegasus > Bahamut Bomber
Lightning: Encode Talker > Light Dragon > Magnus Dux
(It was really hard not giving Flame Heatleo, but all the others felt appropriate and I used the other Code Talkers and @Ignisters)

First off, I want to make an formal apology to Ai. I am so sorry for calling you annoying when Yu-Gi-Oh! Vrains first started. I regret ever saying that so much right now. Secondly, Jesus Christ, how many times did you freaking get hit by that god damn puberty semi?! 0-0 That voice drop though. Like I figured it was going to happen but it is still shocking when you remember that his true form is a tiny gremlin that once in a while turns into a tentacle monster.
I also like to say this. During this whole episode, I was trying to figure out who Ai was reminding me of and it was driving me up a wall until it finally occurred to me that oh my god, they turned him into freaking Lelouch from Code Geass (the irony in that statement). For those that don’t know, Lelouch is my all time favorite anime character and somehow, in just one episode, Human!Ai just became my new favorite Vrains character. Please tell me this is going to be the whole tone of season 3 because if so this is going to be amazing.
Ai seriously was just the MVP of this episode. Seriously I love what they are doing with his character. He’s serious now and is almost like a season 1 Yusaku where he is being driven by revenge almost but at the same time he still has that wit and exaggeration about him that makes him the Ai we know and love from seasons 1 and 2.  For example, his whole archetype emphasize this. His Field Spell and Main Deck Monsters show his more playful side while his Extra Deck Monsters are the things that are going to kill you when you least expect it (kinda like Sora’s archetype from ARC-V). Even before his duel against Queen, you got to see more of his quirky side from his go big or go home attitude in the casino (which btw I feel like we missed out on a chance to see Ai and Roboppy go nuts in a casino (also was I the only one hearing Poker Face by Lady Gaga being played in the background or is that just me?) and when he actually made the battlefield a freaking stage. I feel like Human!Ai is what Zarc was like before he went mad because of how theatrical he is. And it is just fun, especially the dialogue between Ai and Roboppy.
I also like what they are doing with Roboppy as well this season. She/He (I don’t even know anymore after that one piece of dialogue (it is the whole Reira situation all over again) has their own free-will now officially as a side effect of Ai’s backup. They are like a curious child trying to figure out the world with Ai as the parent or as the big brother figure and it is just adorable. The banter and the shenanigans these two got into this episode really does feel like two siblings playing off each other. Like Ai took their younger sibling to the freaking casino while Roboppy keeps Ai’s ego in check now in Yusaku’s place (the best example was seen when Ai was just going over the top with his Link Summon chants and Roboppy had to get him to stop). It is heartwarming that even after all that Ai has lost, he still has someone like Roboppy to be there for him as a fellow A.I. with free-will and has someone there to really keep him from really going off the deep end.
That being said, Human!Ai is still terrifying. Even with him keeping a good amount of his personality, I like how they can still make him threatening. He still has his Ignis powers in human form, meaning he can hack just about anything, but he is also a good duelist (no surprise there since he was based on Yusaku and has been there with him all this time to learn even more from him.) Not only does he have Link Summon but also Synchro and Xyz and I like how they are doing his Extra Deck with his Extra Deck Monsters being based on one of the Ignis/Attribute and a different form of Summoning. Dark Templar @Ignister is Ai/Dark (Link), Wind Pegasus @Ignister is Windy/Wind (Synchro), and Light Dragon @Ignister being Lightning/Light (Xyz). We are just missing Flame (Fire), Aqua (Water), and Earth (Earth) which should collate with Ritual, Fusion and even Pendulum from the looks of things (unless we are going with a Tribute route but honestly Pendulum makes more sense). They are also making Ai threatening by how they are deciding to do duels this season from the looks of things. Link Vrains seems to have been shut down after the battle against Bohman so Ai is literally mind f*cking people and dueling them inside their heads. Guess we know how Playmaker and Ai are dueling in space now. We know Queen lost but we haven’t seen her actual condition from the lose. We know she isn’t in good shape but who knows if the lose actually fries your brain or just puts you into a coma like usual. That could just be for Queen though since we know Ai was trying to get revenge for Earth so lets say if Playmaker loses to Ai when they eventually duel, I don’t think Ai will intentionally try and give him brain damage.
So some other things to note in this episode. Queen is a cheating bitch (I do like the nice throw back with her using the Allure Queen archetype (also freaking Drowning Mirror Force was great) but I seriously am so tried of people using Skills during Master Duels. Akira has been promoted to Executive Director of SOL and is probably the big boss of SOL now that Queen is out of commission (btw did they just completely forget about the other Chess Pieces or something?). Oh and because of that little cheating that Lightning did to keep him from not technically losing to Revolver during their duel by using some of Jin’s consciousness data and turning it into a Life Point, Jin now has forgotten some of if not all of the Hanoi Project (oh that’s convenient) and is getting even better because of it. I don’t know how to feel about this but hey if that means Jin can finally do something as his own person, I’m all for it. All we need now is to know what’s up with Windy’s Origin and maybe then we can finally get some action with our final three Lost Children (since we know Miyu is currently in recovery).
And some last things to note about Ai is that it is interesting how in his own words he chose to take a human form as a way to “throw away his past self” yet he still calls himself “Ai”, same with Roboppy keeping their name. My guess is that they still want to feel connected to Yusaku in a way (oh their reunion is going to be amazing). Ai is also using an old fashion duel disk as well, one with a blade just like Yusaku and Takeru’s. Guess old habits truly die hard. Ai and Roboppy are indeed using SOL androids for their human forms in the real world but seemed to have also changed their forms (well in Ai’s case) to their human ones in the network as well. We still don’t know exactly what he’s planning but he indeed is going to try and use SOL to complete his goal (I swear, if he says anything about files, I’m going to freak). Oh and Ai took back his pet (Linkuriboh) from Yusaku and made it not as friendly.
But yeah, over all, an amazing freaking episode. Season 3 really is just starting out with bang and I very much hope it can continue like this. As for the preview, I guess Akira is taking Ai’s warning very seriously and is getting the whole gang together to become his bodyguards, even freaking Kusanagi is there. It looks like they are still on the ship but everyone is in their Link Vrains’ forms. Looks like Akira might have set something up to keep everyone’s identities a secret (I’m interested to see how that works in combination with Ai’s mind tricks). The only ones that look to be missing are Revolver and Spectre (which is kinda understandable since they’re still technically cyber-terrorists) but we know they going to be apart of this, Revolver mostly though since his point has kinda been proven once he hears about this from his mole. It looks like Yusaku is conflicted about the whole thing, as he should be, and it looks like he might need some time to decide on what he needs to do or some time to try and talk Ai out of whatever it is he’s trying to do. We see Yusaku sitting at Stardust Road, the place where he and Ai said goodbye to each other at the end of season 1, so we might get a flashback to that moment as Yusaku monologues to himself. I’m kinda expecting Ryoken to show up as well, since you know this is his place after all, and I’m curious to know what kind of dialogue we could get from those two about this whole situation if that does happen. Maybe discuss some grief counseling for your child? Clearly he needs some. Then again, it is not like you two have done much better.

New animé-only Altergeist ED monster is a Link 4 and has 2800 ATK like Pyro Phoenix and Bella Donna. Cool.
Its probably the middle card between Darkfluid and Pyro Phoenix, then.
This leaves Kusanagi with a possible Link 4 and Revolver with a possible Link 5.
Since Flame’s @Ignister monster is another Link, chances are only one of Aqua and Earth will get Fusion, or they will be Fusion and Ritual, with Ai’s true boss monster possibly being a Link 6 that uses both Dark Templar and Wind Pegasus as materials.

Wind Pegasus Analysis (Crack Edition)
Next up is Wind Pegasus cause why not plus I’m looking forward to talking about pegasi cause who doesn’t like them? Horses with wings? What’s not to like?
Tumblr media
Wind Pegasus is a level 7 synchro monster with the ability to destroy spell and trap cards equal to the number of other @ignister monsters you control (during the main phase) if one or more cards you control is destroyed either by battle or card effect you can banish this card from either the field or graveyard to shuffle one card your opponent controls to the deck but you can only use either ability once per turn
The interesting thing about WP’s effect is that it’s the only card that can’t in one form or another revive a monster from the gy, the closest thing it gets to reviving anything is banishing itself from the graveyard which I think is intriguing since all the other extra deck @ignister (and main deck monsters if I’m not mistaken) could revive other monsters or itself (yes I’m foreshadowing Fire Phoenix) could there be a reason why WP would be set apart from the others (maybe it’s just because Windy was the only ignis to be rewritten aka the real Windy was essentially “removed from the game” but idk maybe I’m just thinking too deep into it and Konami is all like here ability)
So here we are the part I’m most excited to write about pegasai themselves it’s obvious why Ai might envision Windy as a pegasus it’s a winged horse there’s nothing that says sky wind and air like a fucking horse that can fly seriously horses the sky and wings are all symbolic of freedom and travel which is kind of ironic because you know Windy was rewritten and thus we never got to know him as he truly was regardless we can’t deny that he sought freedom he killed his origin because he wanted to be free from the bond tying them together and his main motivation was freedom from humanity/ freedom to be independent from humanity (I admit I forgot what his motivation was but it has to be one or the other cause I doubt he wanted to kill humanity for the sake of killing humanity) wow surprisingly that’s all I have to say haha but pegasai are typically seen as the steeds of heroes other than Pegasus’s birth his adventures with Bellerophon is among his most well known myth and yugioh had a pegasus legend in zexal perhaps this could reflect how it was obvious Lightning had power over Windy much like how a rider has power over their steed and how Windy was the only ignis to ally himself with Lighting (Flame and Aqua were on Ai’s side and Earth wasn’t going to team up with Ai, but I also can’t imagine him teaming up with Lightning) much how a steed is typically the riders closest relationship if not a bond that’s separate from other bonds (Lightning’s only other allies were his creations his bond with them are different than his bond with Windy and I use bond tentatively and hesitantly)
As for why Wind Pegasus is a synchro monster … I have no clue hehe maybe it’s cause we need synchro rep and the game already has a pegasus xyz monster? I know I’m grasping at straws but while I’m grasping at them might as well present a crack theory or three so we all know that synchro summoning is defined by the ring animation it uses to summon the monster if you’re watching vrains the monsters become rings that correspond to their level and if you’re not watching vrains then only the tuner becomes ring the other monster becomes stars but either way the synchro monster emerges from rings regardless well I bring this up because pegasus is the only @ignister monster who has a specific birth (the rest are either created or has a generic birth) since pegasai could be both a specific monster and a race of monsters of course I’ll be talking about og pegasus and just in case you didn’t know (I’m going to assume you already know but gonna say it anyways) Pegasus was born when Perseus severed the head of Medusa and he and his twin brother Chrysaor emerged from her severed neck you know how synchro monsters emerge from rings also synchro summoning requires the monsters being used to be a specific level (3+4=7) much like how mom and dad equals children and synchro always requires a specific kind of monsters tuners like how in order to produce monsters in mythology you need a divine entity to be involved okay I’m done with the crack theories I had fun thinking about them so now I hope you had fun reading them hahaha
Dark Templar | Water Leviathan | Earth Golem
