TRANSMISSION RECEIVED
This is the start of The Dark Frontier Project. Chronicling the events that transpired during the Dark Crisis of the 89th century, this site serves as a resource for study and analysis.
These stories, transcripts, artwork, etc. will serve as records of the battles fought against both the Dark and the terrorist organization known as Eden.
After the Great Incursion, many lost hope. Few remained optimistic about our future, and fewer still kept the fighting spirit alive. And now, as we continue to wage war on the forces that threaten the survival of our species, everyone must make a choice: stand tall or run away?
The choice is yours.

Excerpt - Book 1, Chapter 5
Dream Sequence, Part 1
Fortis collapsed onto his bed, sighing with satisfaction. His day had been wonderful. He woke up in the late morning and had breakfast with the other Pathfinder recruits who had made their way into the town during the previous day. In total, there were six teams who had made it through what they now called “The Forest Trial”. They shared stories of their adventures, gasping in awe at the power of Margaret’s staves and cheering for Cael when Jaydan dramatically recounted how he sliced open the bottom of the Raven. Cael just shrugged off the praise, modestly saying it was no big deal.
After breakfast, the Australian soldier Fortis and his group had run into the previous day had entered with a small squad of Colonial Guard Marines. He gave them a short speech and access to the military barracks down the road before letting them loose into the town.
The rest of the day was a blur. The Alignment Day Festival was in full swing, with colorful lights and ribbons strung up all around town. All the townspeople wore honest smiles on their faces as they laughed and danced through the streets. Fortis, who had grown up on a variety of space stations and backwater planets, had never seen such carefree and joyful festivities. His team and the group of girls they had assisted the previous day became fast friends, and they spent the majority of the day roaming the town together. In particular, Fortis liked Trix, the blond girl with the machine gun-hammer combo. They stuck together like paper and glue, wandering the town with their friends, having the time of their lives.
Now the day was over, and Fortis lay in his bed with a warm feeling creeping into his chest. He had never been much for relationships, as his constant moving around made it difficult to keep people around. But now he was a Pathfinder. No more moving around, no more loneliness. He could finally be in a relationship with someone.
As he drifted off to sleep with a smile on his face, he could almost hear Trix calling his name.
“Fortis… Fortis… Fortis, wake up!”
Fortis jolted back to reality. Trix was leaning over his bed, her coy smile mere inches from his face. Her floated down around her face, and her emerald eyes sparkled with adventure.
“Good, you’re awake,” she stated, standing up straight. He rolled out of bed to put on a shirt, but Trix pulled him towards the door before he had time to grab his clothes. “Hey, Trix, I’m not sure if you noticed, but I don’t exactly have a shirt on right now,” Fortis stammered, perplexed at the whole situation and wondering what he had eaten that day to give him such a vivid dream.
Trix laughed, a bubbling sound that rippled through the stark halls of the barracks. “It doesn’t matter, you have to see this.”
Acting reluctant but in reality jubilant to be with her, Fortis trotted behind her, keeping up with her brisk pace. He was curious where they were headed, but was afraid that asking her too much might make her rethink her decision to take him.
In any case, his question was answered minutes later as they exited the barracks into a side courtyard. The quaint open space contained several cracked wooden benches and a multitude of wildflowers. Nevertheless, his attention was commandeered by the twisting tower that rose from the middle of the courtyard.
Stone patterns swirled across its surface, intertwined with an extraterrestrial crystal unfamiliar to Fortis, one that shone dull blue in the light of Castelva’s moons. Trix laughed at his surprised expression. She opened the door at the tower’s base and gestured for him to follow her in.
Forits entered the tower, ducking under the hanging wires blocking his path. Looking up and around the inside of the tower, Fortis saw dozens of meters of archaic wiring, relics from the First Solar Age, drooping from the walls like vines in a forest. The wires themselves were connected to even more ancient monitors, their cracked screens spluttering with the dying light of outdated technology.
Based on the wiring, Fortis reasoned that this tower must be well over a thousand years old. Castelva itself was colonized in the mid-fourth millennium, but much of its wilderness wasn’t explored until a thousand years later. The tower was a testament to the engineering prowess of the League of Humanity.
Trix ignored the wiring, darting up the stairs to the top of the tower. Fortis took his time, investigating much of the wiring and several computer screens as he made his way up the tower. He had always loved computers, and this old technology struck a chord with him.
As a result of his slow pace, by the time he reached the top of the tower, Trix was nowhere to be found. He stepped out onto the balcony, looking side to side, even glancing over the edge to see if she had climbed over.
“Ahem.”
Fortis pivoted and turned his gaze upwards. Trix stood on edge of the tower’s roof, smiling at him. She knelt and offered him a hand up.
Once Fortis was on the roof, they sat side by side on the edge, swinging their legs over the hundred meter drop. He began to ask her why they were up there. She shushed him, and when he tried again, she grabbed his chin and pointed his eyes up to the sky.
His gaze tracked the three moons of Castelva as they were pulled together against their will, striving to break free of the invisible force aligning them on this momentous night. When at last the Moons were together, stacked like coins on a table, they began to shine brighter than before, each moon amplifying the others’ light until the sky was lit as bright as day.
As he was watching the Moons, Fortis felt Trix give him a tight hug. He returned the hug, and they sat together like that for several long moments.
She pulled back, and Fortis reluctantly let her go.
“What was that for?” he asked, confused.
Looking down at the rooftop, she beamed. “For making this day wonderful.”
Unsure of how to follow that up, Fortis nodded and looked back at the Moons. After another couple moments, he felt a kiss on his cheek.
He glanced to his side, but Trix was no longer there. He turned back to the Moons, smiling a soft smile into the night.

In celebration of #Landsat45, here is a false-color image of Vilayet-42, using the same techniques from the first #Landsat. Over many hundreds of years, the core technology of surveying a planet’s surface from space has remained largely unchanged.

#OTD in the year 3357, scientists created the first prototype of the Origami Warp Drive, the first method for faster-than-light (FTL) travel. This would allow humanity to explore outside our solar system for the first time, eventually leading to the colonization of hundreds of exoplanets.

TRANSMISSION RECEIVED
Where did humanity go wrong?
For millennia, our species invented fantastic new technology, from the wheel to the computer to the Origami Warp Drive. Humans became the ultimate power in the our galaxy, and, as far as we know, our universe at large. FTL transportation became commonplace; the vast majority of diseases were eliminated; lifespans doubled.
But it wasn’t enough.
Humans are ambitious creatures. Time and time again, they reached for the stars, and when they could finally grab hold, they needed more. One galaxy wasn’t enough. One universe wasn’t enough.
And so, the Second Sphere was created.
The greatest feat of engineering in human history, the Second Sphere propelled humanity into a new Golden Age. Civilizations prospered, and humans spread into this new universe like a tidal wave, terraforming planets as quickly as they were discovered. Our population swelled into the trillions, until it was impossible to maintain an accurate population database.
But it wasn’t enough.
Humans are aggressive creatures. The First Solar War, the longest and largest HVH (human versus human) war, ignited like a supernova explosion. Fighting ravaged distant colonies, and shattered ancient partnerships like glass. This was when the Third Sphere was created, to provide resources and perhaps end the fighting. But it was not to be, and the war continued for another hundred years before the Jenovan Treaty was signed.
But still, it wasn’t enough.
Technology kept improving almost daily - A.I. becoming smarter, ships becoming faster, weapons becoming deadlier. The Fourth Sphere was created, with the hope of discovering new life. Yet it was just as barren and lifeless as all the other Spheres.
After another five hundred years, humanity tried one last time to create a universe. They wanted to desperately to find another life form out there. Surely we weren’t alone. Surely we weren’t a mistake.
And that’s when we found the Dark.

TRANSCRIPT BEGIN
ADMIRAL XAVIER - Thank you for coming on such short notice, General.
GENERAL VERONICA - Well, when I heard we found Athena, I simply had to come.
ADM. X. - Yes, well, it seems there’s a small hiccup in our operation. Computer, show surveillance footage from Find Chill Club, November 27th.
[video begins playing, sounds of partying, students dancing, music]
GEN. V. - Admiral, why are we looking at this?
ADM. X. - Look at the bar.
GEN. V. - Yes, I see him. What does it matter? He’s just not social.
ADM. X. - Computer, zoom on student Fortis Venator.
[gasp from GENERAL VERONICA]
GEN. V. - On that napkin… Is that what I think it is?
ADM. X. - He only saw the encrypted coordinates, but he’s been working on decoding them nonstop. He’s almost cracked the encryption.
GEN. V. - You must arrest this student at once.
ADM. X. - No, I don’t think so.
GEN. V. - What if this information falls into the wrong hands? You must stop him at once! He cannot be allowed to continue! You must -
ADM. X. - I must what?
[silence]
GEN. V. - My apologies. I overstepped my authority. This is your domain.
ADM. X. - No need to apologize. Your input is welcome anytime, Veronica.
GEN. V. - If you’re not going to arrest him, why am I hear?
ADM. X. - You will prepare a fleet of Colonial Guard. At his current rate of encryption, he should be finished by tomorrow. I assume he will immediately convince his team to pursue this lead. You will follow and prepare for extraction should the situation become unreasonably dangerous.
GEN. V. - Yes, Admiral.
[sound of door sliding open, closes]
ADM. X. - Computer, record last five minutes. Speech-to-text, create transcript for Pathfinder Initiative Archives.
[pause]
ADM. X. - Computer, add comment: Remember this moment, Fortis. This is the moment I decided to let you become a Pathfinder.
