Ponyboy walking down the hall a couple weeks after canon next to Steve and Soda and suddenly feeling a heavy arm around his shoulders, tugging him against someone to his left. Expecting Soda, he looks up, but finds Steve glaring at a Soc across the hall.

Darry getting home after a long day and going to grab the grocery list before heading back out only to find it isn't there. He sighs and opens the fridge, which now has everything that was on the list, along with a sticky note that reads "on the old man".

Dally being forced to set the table with Steve. Looking over the knives, searching for the one with the red handle (the best one) and finding it already at his spot.

Johnny showing up at the lot after wandering away from the Curtises' because Darry and Ponyboy were fighting, to find a thick blanket he recognises as the one Steve always brings when he's kicked out.

Two-Bit getting up and walking out of his house, dreading the long walk to the Curtises' the day after Ponyboy showed up at the hospital, and finding Steve waiting in his car, thumbing through some magazine he definitely doesn't find as interesting as he tells Two-Bit it is.

Soda noticing all the little things Steve does for everyone else, seeing the effort he puts into showing what he's been taught to never say. And yet, somehow, he remains oblivious to the fact that the shoulder nudges and slightly too long hugs and grins from across the street are different from how Steve treats everyone else.

hey guys five tornado warnings and shelter in places and i have produced these headcanons for you (ppl are so fucking stupid omg)

darrel curtis loves tornado season bc he gets the best sleep of his life but when the tornado is actually on the ground he hates it bc steve and pony act like they don’t have the sense god gave a flee

they start panicking and acting dinky

pony: why do we have to go to the cellar it ain’t comin near us can’t we just sit in the tub

steve: well at school they just have us lay in front of the walls with our heads to the ground can’t we do that

pony: no wait dar, i need my books. yes all five what if i finish them and get bored

steve: can’t we just wait five more minutes i wanna see it move

anyways point being darry hates them both

he threatens to beat the shit out of steve and that gets him moving

but pony’s #stubborn and the youngest so darry has to leave him and walk three feet away from the house before pony starts scrambling bc he doesn’t want to be alone

two-bit and johnny like to sit on the porch and watch the tornado for as long as they can but as soon as darry starts “yeahhhh alright yall” they’re racing to the storm cellar

they’re usually the first ones down there two they Zont play about the storm i swear

once steve convinced dally to go storm chasing and mrs curtis whooped they ass so bad dallas has never watched a storm since

soon has someone says “tornado sposed to be blowin through” he’s immediately walking to the cellar

soda bless his heart is knocked out soon as the first wind touches

someone’s always carried him down to the cellar and 8/10 times it was darry carrying him

really warms my heart to picture little eleven year old ponyboy going with his mom and dad to see the sound of music in theaters (because his dad loves movies and his mom loves music and they would just so enjoy it) and it’s one of his favorite memories of them as he gets older

I wanna take a second to analyze Darry and Johnny’s significance in GE because they’re so fascinating to me.

The theme of the song is obviously Pony having both great expectations for what his life could be AND going against people’s expectations of what mold they think he fits.

He picks Darry and Johnny to demonstrate the point (specifically the latter point), two people who exist on the completely opposite ends of the East Side spectrum.

Darry held the greaser equivalent of “golden child” in the sense that he had every advantage a greaser could have. Despite still living at/below the poverty line, he came from a home with two present, loving parents, was academically talented, athletically capable, and possessed a strong work ethic. He quite literally did everything right and by the book.

In comparison, Johnny is sitting on the lowest rung on the ladder. The complete opposite of Darry, with seemingly nothing going for him. His parents are physically abusive, he struggles in school, he’s one of the scrawniest in the gang, and is the target of extreme harassment and assault. Pony literally says that he has no chance in the world (but he could if he’d started from somewhere else).

Pony voiced previously before name dropping them that he worries about not being in control of his life. It’s because of what he saw happen to these two. It’s what they had no control over that determined exactly where they were to end up, a shared position: the bottom rung.

But ultimately, you’d have no idea the amount of sympathy and admiration that both garner from simply knowing their story if you don’t take the time to look under the cover. You’d lump them together as two poor greasers when they (and everyone else!!) are so much more than that.

— steve totally used to legit bully the fuck out of ponyboy when pony was like, five. he's toned it down. it's not that physical anymore.

— steve, and i cannot stress this enough, is such a fucking simp i cant.

— the best best friend. i feel like he'd try and act all 'tuff' and stuff, 'forget' what soda or one of the curtis gang mentioned wanting before getting that exact thing for them on a gift-giving holiday. he saved up so he could get them that. :(
