i love people's willingness to get hype over dumb shit.
I was driving home today and pull up to a light. As i'm slowing down i 👁️👁️ lock 👁️👁️ eyes with the dude in the car next to me. I spring into action, this is the moment I've been waiting for.
Now, something you must know about me is I drive around with several small plastic 🦀crabs 🦀 on my dashboard, One: for the whimsy of it all and two: on the off chance i encounter another driver who i think could benefit from witnessing them.
This young gentleman was one such someone.
As i pull up, as previously stated, our eyes lock and I hold up one☝️ finger☝️
Perplexed by my unprompted gesticulation, the young man rolls down his window, "what the devil could this perfect stranger be about to tell me?" he might have been thinking.
I present a singular dashboard crab, green and brown, homely but not without its charm.
I study his reaction, grinning encouragingly. He's nodding, obviously intrigued by my plasticine crustacean.
I wag my finger and shake my head, removing the crab from view. Confusion again, but he leans forward, invested. I have him now.
I grab my second dashboard crab, a rotund white and brown crab, easily the most beautiful of my crabs as it sports large discernible claws of an attractive size and silhouette.
✌️ TWO ✌️ i tell him.
He's cheering now, and rightly so, as these are delightful little beasts that anyone would be happy to encounter. But now comes the clincher, time to seal the deal.
My finger wags once more. He's awestruck, I have him completely enraptured. If a car had come and smeared us both into the pavement we would not have noticed, so wrapped up in my display were we.
I bring out my showstopper: a bright pink spider crab with delicately long legs the likes of which had never before nor since been seen in mid afternoon traffic.
As emphatically as i can express, I display all three of my dashboard crabs to this man, three fingers pressed triumphantly to the glass.
the guy is losing it in his car, mouth wide in what i assume to be a primal shout of crab derived excitement. His arms are pumping so vigorously its shaking his stationary vehicle.
We sit there, sharing in a moment of mutual jubilation, and then the light changes, and we move forward in line. He drives off, honking his horn in rapturous exultation,
and we part ways, exactly the same perhaps but changed nonetheless.

🦀 This is just to say
I have unleashed the crabs that were on my dashboard
and which you had gifted to me for crab day
Thank you they were delightful so scuttle-y and so red
thank you so much for all the crabs @anyawen, @foxsoulcourt, @sweetbabyangels, and Anon friend! I would have sent this message of thanks much sooner, but I unleashed so many crabs that I could not see my dashboard. 😂 and to the people I sent crabs to (mostly anonymously, because #intrigue)--I hope you enjoyed! 😁 🦀

An explanation of Tumblr's apparent obsession with crabs, for new and returning users:
For context, there's a popular video of a diver interacting with a bunch of crabs which has been dubbed over with a TTS voice meant to represent the crabs, saying things like "crab. Crab. Crab. Hand. Frighten! Hand? Hand? Crab. Crab." This video was making rounds around the time of April fool's day earlier this year. Tumblr, along with other social media platforms, also famously celebrates the deaths of famous bigots and colonists with the music video for the song "Crab Rave".
Every year, Tumblr does a joke for April fool's day. One year it was a fake election between various lizards. One year it was a "clippy" knockoff named "Coppy"(who apparently is still around and doing a show with Ryan and Shane from Watcher? I don't know the details there). Usually the joke is somewhat topical to something going on in the world at the time.
For this year, Tumblr's joke was making fun of the fact that so many websites are essentially a bunch of buttons trying to trick you into pressing them for the ad revenue. Turning on the joke mode filled your screen with various mostly useless buttons all begging you to "click!! Engage!! Increase engagement levels! Generate revenue!!".
To I think everyone's surprise, including the devs, the joke buttons were WILDLY popular and basically unanimously enjoyed by the userbase. Turns out that just saying "click this. You get nothing in return and we profit from it", which was just a joke about the increasingly opaque and difficult to navigate state of Internet advertising, actually is 100% more effective at getting people to click it than lying about what it does.
Most notably among these many buttons was a button that just said "Summon Crab" which, when pressed, spawned one crab emoji on your dash. Scrolling over it would show an alt text that read things like "hand" "crab" "crab", a reference to the popular video. Clicking on the crab would turn it into a money bag emoji, to continue the joke that these things are all just there to generate ad revenue. Clicking more summoned more crabs. A small counter kept track of how many you'd summoned and clicked.
People LOVED IT. People went crazy summoning so many crabs that it would freeze their whole browser or that they could no longer see their dash through the horde of crabs. It was fun! It was cute! And it was ultimately harmless. It was just nice to have a website add some fun things to click that weren't there to trick you. They're just crabs and you can click them.
This only was for one day, however, and many people who weren't online that day or were only on mobile didn't get to see or play with the crabs and were disappointed, as were the rest of the userbase who honestly enjoyed it and begged the feature be added to Tumblr normally.
With the success of tumblr Blaze, which allows you to inflict posts on random people's dashboards who don't follow you, affectionately called "Tumblr PvP mode", Tumblr eventually implemented a way to pay money to not only give yourself the ability to summon "dash crabs" for 24 hours, but also give them to someone else.
And now apparently the joke checkmarks can also randomly become dash crabs.
So long story short: Tumblr made a joke referencing a popular video and people enjoyed it so much the site decided to make it a feature they can access in return for giving the site some money. And now everyone is just running with the joke because we think it's delightful and we're happy that the site actually seemed to listen to what we wanted and asked for and we want to encourage the more transparent and honest "this is useless but we think you'll find it funny" marketing Tumblr has started to lean towards.

i am desperately trying to reclaim enough of my dash that i can post my stats before i go to bed but i cannot access the button that does that because i have made my dashboard entirely unusable
10/10
could be improved by: adding the crab rave song on autoplay for as long as there is a crab on your dash, make the crabs walk offscreen occasionally then wander back on doubled in size, clicking one makes two more, etc.
Anyway if anyone was ever wondering what my blog theme came from, there was a little website back in the day where you could do this with nyan cats. So I did. For DAYS. it drove my roommate crazy and i had a blast. this has been a delight. would do dash crabs again.

5 Catered Foods Your Team Will Love in 2024
Whether you want to show appreciation for your team’s tireless efforts or help them relax with a low-key, nourishing meal, lunch catering is the perfect way to take the average workday up a notch.
Tumblr media
In 2024, take your organization’s lunch catering to the next level and make catered lunch a weekly thing. When you order office meals, consider adding these five catered cuisines to your workplace lunch rotation. Mexican Cuisine From flautas to burritos, quesadillas, seafood dishes, and much more, Mexican catering includes an incredibly satisfying assortment of options. That’s probably why it’s one of the most popular cuisines for corporate catering. Mexican cuisine also includes an array of shareable dishes that create a fantastic opportunity for your team members to snack casually and get to know one another over conversations that are just as hearty as the food. Asian Delights This is a fairly broad category that encompasses everything from chow mein to sushi, crab Rangoon, and much more. Asian food has something to offer for virtually everyone, whether they’re looking for something filling, a meal that’s more on the lean side, or even a vegan option. With the right corporate catering partner and a nationwide network of restaurants, it’s easy to order the top local Asian food in your area and satisfy your entire team. Sandwich Catering Sandwiches are a go-to when it comes to office catering because they’re nourishing, portable, and one of the tidier lunch options. Plus, there’s all kinds of variety among sandwiches. For example, when it comes to catering Charleston SC office lunches in 2024, check out top options like Jason’s Deli, Mellow Mushroom, and Apple Spice Box Lunch Delivery & Catering Co. American Classics Chicago deep-dish pizza, Buffalo chicken, and bacon cheeseburgers are just a few of the iconic American meals you can order for your team. You can even find comfort food like meatloaf, chicken pot pie, and sub sandwiches. Whichever you choose, you can count on the right corporate catering partner for reliable delivery. You need your food to show up on time and as ordered, as well as support that lets you reach a real human in seconds to promptly resolve any issues and keep your workday on track. Everyone has their favorite American comfort foods, so you’re bound to order something everyone will love. Sweet Treats and Beverages There’s nothing quite like a piece of pie, homemade cookie, or mug of hot chocolate to lift your team’s spirits. Whether Mother Nature is throwing curveballs or it’s just kind of a “bleh” day, some sweet pick-me-ups can be just what your team needs to turn things around. Not only will the ideal corporate catering partner help you find food to suit any situation, but you’ll also enjoy a centralized dashboard that gives you total control over your organization’s account. When choosing a catering partner, look for everything from simplified budget management to effortless expense reporting and convenient monthly invoicing. About ezCater When it comes to corporate lunches, daily office meals, or rewarding your team for an outstanding quarter, you need more than work food. You need food that works from ezCater. With a nationwide network of over 100,000 restaurants, you can always find the top local favorites with ezCater. Plus, the ezCater Dashboard puts you in charge of your company’s ordering, so you can monitor and control food spend with ezCater’s convenient centralized reporting. Are you organizing the office holiday party this year? Regardless of the size of your group, individual dietary needs, or budget, ezCater is the ideal corporate catering partner. ezCater lets you order confidently, knowing that your meals will show up on time and as ordered, with 24/7 support to keep everything on track. Tumblr Hack Week, March 2022 Edition
It was Hack Week (more than just a day!) once again at Tumblr! A couple of times per year we grind everything to a halt and spend a week working on whatever we want and see how far we can get with our hacks. Since last time, we’ve launched the ability to have a Discord => Tumblr integration, we’re close to launching Twitch embed support, and custom logos are now possible in the mobile apps! And from a previous Hack Day, we’ve launched “Timestamps Everywhere” on web, and we’re working on rolling it out to the mobile apps very soon!
Here are some of the projects that got made for this last Hack Week. Some of these things you may also end up seeing on the site…
Interacting as a Sideblog/Secondary blog
@designpatternpirate put together a proof of concept for switching to a sideblog/secondary blog when liking or replying to posts. Using this hack, you’d be able to switch which of your blogs you’re “acting as” when hitting the like button or when replying to a post, to start. You’d even have separate Likes pages for each blog!
“One Year Ago” Dashboard Feed
André hacked together a feed which shows a portal backwards in time, to what the blogs you’re following were posting a year ago today:
Tumblr media
Moving Android notification settings
On Android, Omar moved all of our notification settings out of the Tumblr app and into the Android OS level notifications settings view, like other apps do:
Tumblr media
“Time for crab!” 🦀
@superchlorine hacked together a delightful button for the dashboard that summons crabs which scuttle across the page, and even comment on what they’re traipsing over:
Tumblr media
As always, stay tuned to the @changes blog to see if any of these hacks make it on Tumblr for real!

tbh i think the reason why the tumblr desktop crabs delight me so much is that they’re the perfect example of a prank that doesn’t involve flat out just lying. it’s just. silly. harmless and silly, that’s all it is. and that’s perfect.
i fucking HATE april fools and what it’s become, because most “pranks” these days are just people telling fibs for no reason that make me question reality and their intent. like literally want to throw my computer through the wall every time i see another clickbait article making up an entirely fake spinoff or game or movie or whaTEVER that sounds like absolute dog shit. literally so done with that style of “prank.” it’s almost never funny. being a gd liar is out, and innocent stupid dashboard crabs you can willfully turn on and off whenever you please are IN
