More dystopia- sorry not sorry, it’s just too good! It’s no surprise that The Maze Runner won the ALA Best Fiction Award in 2011 and the Young Reader’s Choice Award for intermediate grades in 2012. If you’re a fan of not only reading but watching as well, this series has you covered with 3 of the books having been remade into movies. I haven’t watched them yet, but I plan on it in the near future. Yes, the irony of reading such a series at during a pandemic has not been lost on me, and I think that it actually gave the books a more realistic and serious feel. One thing that kind of bugged me was how the reader knows next to nothing about Thomas’ past, and only gets a look at his life in WICKED before the maze in The Fever Code. It doesn’t change the fact that the books are amazing... 100% would recommend but personally I would have wanted to know more about his childhood and how his family survived the flares.

However, The Fever Code (and The Kill Order) had told what WICKED was trying to conquer - the gravity of a post-apocalyptic holocaust and how crucial it was to find a cure to save mankind. Somewhat, they were aiming for the "greater good" - sacrificing a few to save many (especially non-immunes)... 📖✨ Nostalgia ✨ If you love The Maze Runner, you would surely love this prequel as much! My heart skipped a bit on chapters where Thomas would meet another Glader at WICKED (and I am instantly taken back to when he first met them in the Glade ~ when they didn't have memories of one another) 🙏 It made me understand how deep their connection / relationships were, and somehow empathize to their decisions (tho sometimes unwise) in the first books. 🙏 [Mild Spoiler ---> it also made me ponder how important a name is, how it represents us and our identity. By simply creating nicknames or endearments when they were forced/tortured to forget them, these Gladers had defied WICKED's even more wicked ways. When Thomas called Charles Chuck... And Newt called Thomas Tommy... my heart was crushed! 😓 Considering how young these boys were when they were taken away from their families 😭 Somehow, they had refused to be totally altered and had tried to create themselves. Freedom, however neglected, is very important. Being given a choice, no matter how risky, truly matters.
