what if when icarus fell apollo caught him before he hit the sea, arms as warm as the sun, but safer.
what if when ariadne cast the rope across a broken branch aphrodite stepped in with a reminder that this, this is not the kind of love you die for.
what if when achilles was ready for war ares appeared with a smile and said “you win well when you win, but what are you unwilling to lose if you lose?” and achilles knew the answer.
if you could retell the tale wouldn’t you want to tell it kinder? wouldn’t you want to give them peace, even love, where you could?

Soul Street
The houses down on Soul Street were a sight to be seen-
All different shapes and sizes: some red, some blue, some green.
A little girl lived in a black house, clean as an empty slate
Because she had not decided with which color she should paint.
So she tried on different curtains, to see which one was best.
And she believed that yellow looked better than the rest.
She liked that it was joyful; she thought it felt like home;
And she hoped that the color yellow would make her less alone.
It would make others happy as they passed and looked her way
And somebody, perhaps, might want to be her friend someday.
She hung those yellow curtains and sealed her windows tight
But they made the inside dark while her house outside was bright.
So the girl had many friends but invited none inside
And nobody on Soul Street thought she had anything to hide.
Yet living in the dark is hard when nobody else knows,
When everybody thinks you're happy while you're full of woes.
Even when she stayed inside, her house made others smile
So she went out less and less after a little while.
For years her house, unfailing, filled everyone with cheer
But looking inside they found her dead, the girl they held so dear.

Quick question for all the readers out here, because I am so tired of the "chosen one" trope, or the 'different"/"special" main character: Do you know of any books that have the opposite of that? Where the main character is ACTUALLY not special? Like they thought they were but they ended up being exactly like everyone else. (or something like that) It's kind of hard to explain but I think you know what I mean.

The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray
Book 3 of 3
Themes: YA fiction, magic, historical fiction, mystery, fantasy, romance
I finished this book a few weeks ago, but I'm only now getting to write about it. First and foremost, like I mentioned with the other 2 books, Gemma's friendship with Felicity and Ann really drives me nuts. I don't even consider them to be real friends. Felicity is just straight up toxic, and Ann doesn't have the guts to do anything about it when Felicity is being a horrible person to Gemma. The story is very interesting and unpredictable, which I love, because although it makes me feel smart, solving the mystery early can make the book boring. I am also a sucker for vivid descriptions, and this book is full of them. It is beautifully written, but there are some things that I didn't like. Fair warning: It's not exactly a happy ending... like the main issue is solved but it's not "and she lived happily ever after" ... That was not appreciated. I invested into that 800 page book and what do I get? A sad feeling. I was like 5 pages away from the end and still waiting, hoping that something would change and it would be a fairytale book ending. I do however how different it is, because it's not the most common ending.
-It has been a year of change since Gemma Doyle arrived at the foreboding Spence Academy. Her mother murdered, her father a laudanum addict, Gemma has relied on an unsuspected strength and has discovered an ability to travel to an enchanted world called the realms, where dark magic runs wild. Despite certain peril, Gemma has bound the magic to herself and forged unlikely new alliances. Now, as Gemma approaches her London debut, the time has come to test these bonds. The Order - the mysterious group her mother was once part of - is grappling for control of the realms, as is the Rakshana. Spence's burned East Wing is being rebuilt, but why now? Gemma and her friends see Pippa, but she is not the same. And their friendship faces its gravest trial as Gemma must decide once and for all what role she is meant for.

Here’s something I wanna say real quick, while I’m feeling salty: Amazon has totally contributed to the devaluation of literature. Those prices you see, the $13 they’re asking you to pay for a hardcover book? Those are deep, DEEP discounts that they’re able to implement because they don’t collect sales tax if they can get away with it, they don’t contribute money to the communities where they have a physical presence, they have shitty labor practices, Jeff Bezos has more money than god, etc.
(Read this report from the Institute for Self-Reliance if you really want to get into how they’re hurting the economy.)
They’re so omnipotent at this point that they’ve normalized the discounted prices for books as the standard. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve had someone come up to me and tell me what the price on Amazon is, expecting me to match it. The number of times I’ve been told, “Oh, it’s cheaper on Amazon, I’ll just get it there.” Even at author events, where book sales DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTE to whether or not that bookstore will be able to get more authors in.
So when you go into a bookstore, and you’re asked to pay $27 for a hardcover, remember: THAT IS THE COVER PRICE. Set by the publishers. The bookstore is not upcharging you. They are asking you to pay the value of the book. Amazon’s low prices come with a cost. Please, just keep that in mind.
(I made a post with options for buying books online that aren’t Amazon. Check it out!)

HEY KIDS!! It’s Sofía here, and tonight we will be talking about The Stranje House Series by Kathleen Baldwin.
I talked about the first book, “A School for Unusual Girls” a while ago, but, BUT, it’s time these books get the attention they deserve.
It’s a historical fiction YA series, and it’s set in 1814. Now, is not the dry manorial setting these books usually have. Instead, they are set in a ‘school for girls’, but one of them is like a scientist and iS SO IMPORTANT SEEING GIRLS INTERESTED IN SCIENCE AND BEING PROMOTED!!!
Also, whenever the girls are understimated, they clap back!!! Which is huge for this time period!!!
The girls have very distinct personalities and backgrounds, including a very rich daughter of an Earl to a mixed Indian girl to a modest Brit who is tormented by dreams.
There is suspicion, suspense, plot twists, political intrigue , romance and a lot of action and kick ass scenes!!! From 16 year olds who are supposed to be proper.
Most importantly, it encourages being extraordinary instead of just settling by society’s expectations!! There is a huge message of how being different id good!!!
Only downside, and I only say this cause i know some people don’t like this, is that most protagonists are paired with someone but they’re all very sweet romances so idk is a matter of perception.

How I see the Stranje House series by Kathleen Baldwin (@kathleen-baldwin) ... I saw similar trends on tiktok so I decided to bring it here as well. The Stranje house series is my absolute favorite series of all time you guys don't even understand. And it is sooooo underrated like I never see any fanart or posts about it, which sucks. If you're looking for a book to read look no further. If you HAVE read the series, please let me know so we can go crazy about it together. Thank you.

Kid Alone by Simon Mason
Second book in Garvie Smith mysteries
Themes: Mystery, Adventure, Fiction, Contemporary, Young Adult
I reviewed the first book a while back, so make sure to check that out as well! To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of this series. It's not bad, but there are certainly more interesting ones, to me. I feel like it starts out pretty slow and continues to speed up which causes it to fly through the climax and the ending. This makes the beginning super memorable even though it's not as important, and the ending just blends in so I seriously had to think for a while the day after I finished just to remember who the guilty party was. I also really hate the main character. Garvie is super smart yet he puts in zero effort in school. I understand if he doesn't like it, but if he doesn't pass his tests he can't stay in school, a fact which he completely ignores. He doesn't care about the feelings of others, especially his mom who is very worried about him. He can see that and the toll it takes on her yet he still continues to lie to her and disobey her. He also only helps the police because he is bored. Yes, he has a personal connection to the victim but still, he doesn't really care about the person. That's what annoys me so much about him.
-Garvie's exams have started, but so has another mystery. A kid got shot last night, a kid from Garvie's school, and Garvie thinks he can work out who did it quicker and better than the police. He'll go to any lengths to find his answers.
