Where we started - MatPat
Hi, yes, I did cry during the announcement. And yes I cried again when I rewatched the announcement. I didn't realize it, but I went back to check and I've been watching game theory for 12 YEARS. I haven't watched consistently the entire time, but I have been watching pretty regularly again for the past three years (especially the food theories and meta theories <- love those)
I'm going to try and do a bigger composition as a companion piece closer to the retirement date, so fingers crossed I can do that in time. In the meantime I've been rewatching old GT (not) Live stuff to cope, haha!

Favorite DnP Tour Song Statistics
Settle round, little ducklings, do I have some statistics to share with you all!!
A grand total of 156 people participated in this survey, so thank you if you took the time to fill it out! 🧡
As a teaser, here’s a pie chart of the votes for your favorite song! We’ll be discussing this in depth in its own section but I know some of you f*ck vibe with pie charts more than the bar charts I use there…
Tumblr media
To give you a clear vision of what we’ll be looking at, here are the categories of the upcoming analysis:
Phandometrics (community growth on a viewership & fandom scale)
Favorite Song (general)
Favorite Song vs. Phandometrics (the main hypothesis!)
Honorable Mentions (fun little quirks I noticed along the way)
Ready? Time to read on.
PHANDOMETRICS
Tumblr media
Lag between year started watching -> year joined the phandom. This can be seen most obviously in the 2009-2015 portion of the graph, likely when the community was just building up. I went back to check individual points, and many people seem to join a year or two after starting to watch.
Three distinct peaks of phandom growth: 2015 (dnp popularity peak), 2019 (coming out), and 2023 (dnpg comeback, dnp renaissance). Pretty expected, but still cool to see!
The difference between the peaks when you look at viewership vs. phandom is interesting though! Especially 2019 seems to be a huge spike in viewership, but the phandom growth seems a little more gradual (maybe more people lurked at first, then joined the phandom in 2023 once they were more active?).
The 2012 peak is really interesting. Most popular year to start watching from this sample, apparently!
FAVORITE SONG
Tumblr media
"The Internet is Here" won 51.3% of the votes... which didn't surprise me all that much. It's iconic, okay?
II is about half as popular, and beyond the song qualities themselves, I wonder if a contributing factor to this pattern could be its lack of availability as an officially released song.
I think Everything's Fine is so low partially bc I closed the poll before WAD released to prevent the recency effect from skewing the data. (Especially because I thought we were getting "Everything's Fine (Acoustic)" smh.)
FAVORITE SONG VS. PHANDOMETRICS
By era...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a hypothesis: based on the year you joined, which I now realize in my head wrongly equated with the year you were most active in, you'd be more biased towards the song of that era bc a) you were more likely to go to the tour or b) epic nostalgia hit.
Yeah, I was wrong.
When you group the eras you see that TIIH wins in almost every single group by a similar proportion to the total, which means this attitude is fairly evenly distributed amongst the phannies.
By year...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Separating by year, you begin to see that, hold up, the hypothesis could have some merit! In either 2017 or 2018 on both graphs, the II finale actually does win.
The super high TIIH votes bleeding in from 2015/2016 and from 2019 seemed to mask this pattern.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Tumblr media
I have no idea what happened here but both ways you slice it, Interactive Introverts was fighting for its life amongst the 2012 phannies???
We got three phannies that have been watching since 2009!! The fact that people have been sticking around so long (up to fifteen years!!! and this was only a sample of 156 of us!!!) is really heartwarming for me bc it's a testament to how strong of a community dnp have built their viewership to be.
At the end of the day, what can I say? That was a lot of statistics. I hope you enjoyed or took something away from this little survey. Lmk if you notice any other cool trends or have any theories on what the data means!
Thank you for listening to my yapping; have an orange heart.
🧡

Something Wicked This Way Comes
Something Wicked This Way Comes by aileenrose Rating: Mature Word count: 9.5k
Just like every summer, Dean and Sam are tracking tornadoes. Surprisingly, it's the nerdy computer scientist that sweeps Dean off his feet.
Every June, Dean and Sam make good on an old tradition and an easy way to make money, for them anyway—storm chasing across the plains, capturing footage other chasers wouldn’t dare dream of, at the risk of their own safety. But Sam is graduating college soon with his girlfriend Jess, and Dean knows that one day, they won’t get this chance again.
But in a twist of fate, the two of them encounter an old rival, Crowley, in a bar in Tulsa. And, incidentally, a data analyst from the Storm Prediction Center named Cas Novak, dressed like he’s completely out of his element in a bar full of tornado tourists, but wherever Dean turns in town, Castiel is there—and, Castiel comes to his rescue as well, right when the world figuratively and literally crashes down around him.
Growing up, I wanted to become either a storm chaser or a meteorologist, neither of which came to fruition. This fic, though, has always reignited a spark for me, and the author shows off every bit of research they did just to make it feel true-to-life. It also calls back to the original canon with plenty of lines, and a climactic scene that changes both of their lives in any story, in a barn, albeit this time with potentially more hazardous consequences.
The writing draws you in from the first scene and takes you through a few days in the life of a storm chaser, on the backroads of Oklahoma, hunting down one of nature’s deadliest forces—and as well, Dean meeting the love of his life by pure happenstance, with the two embarking on a new life together as the credits roll. It’s a fic I’ve come back to time and time again, and definitely one that stands out as unique!

Fuck it. I have a headcanon that post-Extra Game, Akashi begins to feel more acutely aware that he's the only member of the Teiko gang who has not been given a nickname by Momoi, and so one day during a Teiko gang hangout (which has become more of a regular occurrence), he subtly brings up that he's more than okay with Momoi giving him one and that she doesn't have to be so formal with him.
She goes back and forth with a few nickname candidates but it's pretty hard to come up with a nickname using his family name (Aka-chan doesn't work for reasons I'm sure most of you understand by now), so Akashi tells her that she's more than welcome to use his given name if it made things easier. Momoi is slightly taken aback but complies with his request. Thus, from then on, she refers to Akashi as "Sei-kun", and Akashi couldn't be happier.

The kind of insane thing about being a data analyst is that every company in the freaking world defines "data analyst" differently and sometimes has jobs that are data analytics jobs labeled as a completely different thing (I'm looking at you, Pinterest). Like, in my time as a data professional, I've done kind of generic data analytics work, but I've also performed data quality work (both finding and correcting data issues as well as improving and developing data capture and auditing processes and tools in order to reduce the number of corrections that are necessary in the first place), I've participated in developing data governance standards as both a SME and a data steward, and acted as the head of a data governance steering committee. The stuff I enjoy is actually the data quality/data governance stuff, but, depending on the company, these things might have their own titles or they might be lumped in under the "data analyst" title, and there is no way to actually know until you read through a job listing.
In other news, I will hopefully need a new job come October 1 (long story; who knows, maybe I'll tell it someday, but suffice it to say I have been waiting for this day since last October), so I've started to look for possible opportunities, and the whole job hunting process so far has been a bit of a slog because I never know if I will be wildly unqualified for a Senior Data Analyst position or not.

i have no plans to go into game development because i have no artistic direction but if i ever did i'd make a magic shop simulator. there would be 3 levels of mechanics (procurement, construction, distribution) and certain items / recipes / crafts locked behind character story quests... i think of her often

Listening Trends in All or Nothing
(scroll down for poll!)
There's an interesting pattern throughout All or Nothing's listening data:
Tumblr media
At first glance, the number of listens decreases consistently as we go down the tracklist, with the notable exception of a certain Track #14. This led me to plot the data to examine the strength of the correlation.
Tumblr media
(give it up for "It Hits Different", the favorite child of the second half)
Anyway, notice that little note up top that says R^2 = 0.831? That's our friend R-squared, which tells us how much of the variation between # of listens is explained by the relationship between listens and track #. More about that here if you're wondering bc god knows I didn't explain that as well as it needed to be. Basically, the higher the R-squared value, the more we can trust that the relationship between the two variables means something! We should note now that R-squared values range from 0 to 1, so with our R-squared value of 0.831, that's pretty high. That means 83.1% of the variation in listening can be explained by this relationship we see between listens and track.
That's all well and good but, Ser, why do we care about the listening/track relationship in the first place?
I initially hoped the listening numbers would give me a clue on which track was the most popular, but this pattern got me wondering about something else. We've all got listening styles, whether that's popping an album on shuffle, carefully selecting favorites, burning one song into your brain at a time (guilty), or simply listening all the way through in order. From this pattern, I hypothesize the "in order" option could be the most popular, but many other variables could be at play.
A DanAndPhilBEATS listener survey might shine a little light on the subject, though, and that's where you come in! So, tell me...

Who is doing it like Nora? Fully calling her ex boyfriend out on his big gay crush only to have the bomb dropped on her that he's fucked a reporter meanwhile her ex's crush's best friend is sending her floral arrangements and her and him are the only non-government officials to have top secret knowledge of the fact her ex is boinking the Prince of England and also she's the Vice President's daughter and that's never brought up because she's a data analyst first and foremost!

There are 172 War Boys in Furiosa.
I didn't count, that's just literally what Immortan Joe said when Dementus first showed up and tried to take on the Citadel.
Something about actually having a number, and that number feeling so small, gave me feelings I am still trying to sort out.
Did the War Boy population grow between the events of Furiosa and Fury Road?
Or have I just never actually thought about exactly how many boys we're realistically talking about?

Hi! I'm autistic.
And I wasn't diagnosed until my early 30s - in fact, it's been only about a year since!
Getting diagnosed gave me the chance to take a class these past five weeks in which I got to meet and be around other neurodivergent people my age, which I enjoyed immensely and helped me grow as a person.
(One truly doesn't realise how important having peers to talk to is until you get to do it; and no, having neurodivergent friends online does not cut in my opinion. Being in a room with eleven other people that exist in your space and are tangible makes a big difference - I've never felt so at home before.)
However, as great as the past few weeks have been, the rest of the time since my diagnosis I've felt a huge amount of shame. Shame I'm trying to overcome! I will never wear my diagnosis as a badge of honour or think of it as something to be proud of. And that's okay. Am I weird and cooky and a little hard to understand sometimes? Yeah! But that's also okay.
I'm working on accepting myself every day, and every day it gets a little bit easier.

So, I've been a data analyst for like five years and I'm currently working on a degree in data analytics which is...a mixed bag as far as experiences go, but once I get the piece of paper saying I went to school for a thing I already do, they have to give me more money (and my company is paying for most of it), so I'm doing the thing. Anyway, I am currently working on this project for a data quality and validation class, which is quite literally my job, and it is driving me insane.
The project is all about cleaning data to prepare it to be loaded into an existing system due to a company merger, something I happen to be uniquely qualified to do due to personal experience -- more so than even many of my colleagues. That's all fine and good. Except the "existing system", which is straight-up referred to as a "database", is just another tab on the Excel spreadsheet, and nowhere have I seen the clarification "look, we're doing it this way because it's easily accessible, but in no universe should you store a database's worth of information on a spreadsheet, nor is this tab actually a database."
And considering how many "databases" people like to keep on spreadsheets much to the chagrin of every data professional in existence, I just want to talk to whoever wrote this curriculum.
