School Debate formats don't have to suck

Disclaimer: not a full on debate nerd, but have seen enough to think school debate teams are basically circlejerks. In this pointless rant on my pointless tumblr, I propose to make debate formats suck less through the use of technology. Lincoln-Douglas format deserves better.

Background bullshit: debate is seen as a prestigious academic team that teaches logic, public speaking, and negotiation. Unfortunately it has all the bias towards privilege and groupthink in judging as a dog show. And there is an OP strategy, talk real fast and gish gallop the shit out of any issue. So you go watch a debate and see well dressed upper middle class kids spout bullshit as fast as they can with lots of spurious filler, sounding like auctioneers or lawyers making up precedent law citations on the stand. And they get rewarded for it. The whole endeavor is considered worthy and academic and lord knows what any of those fucking kids are saying and referencing and who can say if any academic judges could repeat half their debate points or rebuttals. So fuck that. Legal debates, public speaking, economic debates, even political interviews are really fucking important for society. Check out David Brin's proposed 'Disputation Arenas' for smart thoughts about the importance of public debate.

But yeah, the debate format of two people putting forth their ideas and then trying to rebut the most important ideas is a complete shit show. We need to apply speech to text that enables instant transcripts to the little kids trying to bullshit each other. Apply a speed limit words-per-minute to the debators, they're not auctioning off an estate, they are supposed to be speaking persuasively, so calm the fuck down as part of the rules of the debate. If you want to get real singularity about it, you could probably train a neural net to highlight each rhetorical point and to mark which rhetorical points were addressed adequately. Furthermore, with a transcript judges can actually take the time and analyze the strength of the arguments at a more granular level. In the present moment where neural nets can be used to make all sorts of things more precise, why not make the training of future statesmen and orators more precise. (And actually fucking useful. When the most egregious political lies are given power all the time because of the lack of quality followup questions. A modern debate format would improve abilities for coherent public debate. Also, imagine training the next AlphaGo to adversarially grade whether debate arguments are consistent or coherent rhetoric). This leads to another note which is worthy of a whole other rant but I'll throw it in here to just wrap it up. Why The Fuck does every user and group of users settle for their services and related user information to be sucked up and stored in the cloud to be owned by creepy malignant fucking billionaires and their stooges. Musk is clearly a couple decades away from wanting to own a small nation state, so why should we put ChatGPT api's in services that then pass up (in the above example) voice and biometric information to the cloud? I mean, tiktok exists without providing much in the way of a service beyond shiny flashy things engagement, but there should be services that do sophisticated text analysis on local networks without signing away personal information. The information space for public good is as warped as the society it's built to be sold to. I bet there aren't neural nets to help doctors analyze medical issues that simultaneously expose and monetize doctors personal information - (although IRL doctors are frequently dumb dumbs in terms of overall savvy). The society that is A-Okay with PPP loan fraud but not blanket student debt relief, is probably a society that can't have functioning debate team digital referees in the complicated space of Lincoln-Douglas debate formats. But it should be less fucked up, and even minor changes to the format like speed limits and transcriptioning could mean so much for the whole thing.
