From Homeless to Hamilton: How Daveed Diggs Finessed His Way Onto Hollywood’s ‘It’ List Without Selling Out

Presented with the basic premise for what would later become the defiantly woke, Pulitzer Prize-winning, billion dollar-grossing Broadway smash hit Hamilton in 2013, rapper-actor Daveed Diggs reacted strongly to the material—just not in a good way. “I said, ‘That’s a terrible idea,’” recalls Diggs. “If someone says to you, ‘Hey, here’s a rap musical about Alexander Hamilton,’ the elevator pitch of that show is not good!”

Realizing he’s implicitly shitting on Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda, the performer clarifies: “There was never any doubt that Lin could pull this off. Immediately upon hearing the music or reading the scenes, it becomes clear that it’s a wonderful idea. But if you ask me if I think this is a bad idea? I still think it’s a bad idea.”

Diggs, of course, went on to originate the production’s dual dead-white-guy role of Thomas Jefferson/Marquis de Lafayette, picking up a best actor Tony and a Grammy for his risk—all while firmly entrenching himself within America’s cultural consciousness thanks to his rapid-fire MC skills and Sideshow Bob-esque head of corkscrew curls.

Which is a pretty positive outcome for a guy who just a few years earlier had regularly slept on the 2 train—Manhattan’s Seventh Avenue express—during his starving actor days. He was scraping by on just $100 a week in unemployment benefits and getting rejected time and again during “soul-crushing, nonsense” auditions. “I didn’t have a job or an income source,” Diggs says. “I was going to these big cattle call auditions. I’d leave those things and go hang out with friends. I was young and invincible. Sleeping on the subway was fine.”

But in 2016, after two years and somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 performances beneath Hamilton’s blinding cultural spotlight, the Oakland-born multi-hyphenate—who was recruited to run the 110 meter high-hurdles at Brown University but graduated with a degree in theater—decided it was time to branch out. “I knew it was time for me to go,” he says. So in recent months, Diggs has turned his attention to an almost mind-boggling array of eclectic projects.

“I wanted to keep working,” explains Diggs. “I didn’t know how long it would be before I worked again. And I was also aware that something had happened that had given me a visibility in this business that is pretty rare—especially for a person doing theater. I was confident in the people I had chosen to work with. But I was nervous: how do you not make the wrong decision? It’s such a fickle business.”

In addition to racking up character arcs on such shows as Netflix’s The Get Down (as the show’s narrator, a hip-hop superstar), Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (a university philosophy student and possible Kimmy paramour who, yes, busts a rhyme on camera during the show’s third season) and Black-ish (as Tracee Ellis Ross’ pompous, croissant-chomping hipster brother Johan), Diggs has also been touring with his experimental/underground noise-rap group Clipping. On November 17, Diggs will mark his film debut with a supporting role as an English teacher alongside the likes of Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson in Lionsgate’s YA novel adaptation Wonder. “I was a teacher for many years before anyone knew who I was,” Diggs notes. “So it felt close to home. I still teach workshops and try to work in education whenever I can. I think teaching is one of the most important jobs you can do, so I jumped at the opportunity to portray a really great teacher.”

Then there’s his pivot to the other side of the camera with the new ABC sitcom The Mayor for which the 35-year-old serves as executive producer. After his recurring role on Blackish, and still relatively burnt out by his long Hamilton co-starring run, Diggs was reluctant to sign on for the “grind” of a multi-year commitment of a starring role but warmed to the idea of calling shots creatively (what’s more, he and his Clipping band mates Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson are creating the show’s original music). Debuting to generally positive reviews earlier this month, The Mayor (Tuesdays at 9:30 ET) follows an aspiring NorCal hip-hop artist (Brandon Michael Hall) who runs for political office to jump start sales of his mixtape—but unexpectedly wins the election.

“Setting it in Northern California means it would sound different than any other part of the country or even someplace as close as Los Angeles,” Diggs notes. “Because of where he is, [the main character] Courtney Rose will be more influenced by E-40, Mac Dre and Keak da Sneak than, say, Jay Z, Nas and Biggie. I was excited to work on a show that honors those distinctions and I think this specificity adds authentic to the character and the town.”

And as if his dance card weren’t yet already full enough, Diggs is set to star in TNT’s futuristic sci-fi series Snowpiercer as a prisoner barely surviving on a gigantic, fast-moving train that continuously circles the globe years after civilization has been wiped out by a post-apocalyptic ice age. “I don’t think any performer wants to be pigeonholed,” Diggs says with a shrug. “And I’m a sci-fi nut. It’s exciting. It’s one of the reasons I’m in this business: I’m not very good at doing the same thing every day!”

Câu chuyện về thiết bị tạo cảm hứng cho những chiếc iPhone

Bằng cách kể chuyện chân thật, biên tập viên công nghệ Steven Levy từ BackChannel gợi nhắc lại các kỷ niệm về chiếc máy nghe nhạc đã làm thay đổi khái niệm smartphone sau này.

Thời điểm kỷ niệm 15 năm ra mắt iPod đã qua. Mặc dù không nổi tiếng bằng người anh em iPhone, song đây là sản phẩm đánh dấu bước chuyển mình trong quỹ đạo phát triển của Apple từ một cựu binh trong ngành công nghiệp máy tính trở thành nhà sản xuất các sản phẩm kỹ thuật số hàng đầu. Ngày 23/10/2001 đã trở thành cột mốc đặc biệt trong lịch sử công nghệ thế giới.

Tại thời điểm tháng 10/2001, tôi (Steven Levy) đang làm việc cho tờ Newsweek – một trong các nguồn tin chính của thế giới. Nhân loại vẫn chưa hết bàng hoàng sau cuộc tấn công khủng bố vào Trung tâm Thương mại Thế giới ngày 11/9.

Và rồi giới công nghệ bắt đầu có những động thái tích cực dần. Ngày 25/10, Microsoft công bố sẽ tiến hành tổ chức sự kiện nâng cấp hệ điều hành mới (Windows XP) ở New York. Điều đó cho thấy thành phố đã sẵn sàng trở lại với nhịp sống hối hả trước đây.

Sự kiện ra mắt Windows XP đang đến gần. Sự góp mặt của bạn là niềm vinh dự cho chúng tôi. Để đảm bảo an toàn cho tất cả mọi người, chúng tôi cần bạn và những người tham dự thực hiện các yêu cầu sau:

Mang theo hai loại thẻ nhận dạng.

Đến sớm để đăng ký.

Không mang túi xách, ba lô, máy ảnh hoặc chai lọ đến sự kiện.

Nhóm phát hành Windows XP.

Song song với Microsoft, Apple cũng đang rục rịch tổ chức sự kiện mới tại California. Điều thú vị trong thư mời nằm ở dòng chữ nhỏ với gợi ý: “Là một thứ khác ngoài Mac”.

Tôi quyết định không tham dự vì chưa chuẩn bị sẵn tâm lý để ngồi lên bất cứ chiếc máy bay nào sau sự kiện 11/9. Steve Jobs và Apple hiểu được điều này nên công ty hứa sẽ gửi đến cho tôi một thiết bị bí mật cùng ngày Steve giới thiệu nó tại Cupertino.

Mặc dù đã bỏ lỡ khoảnh khắc Steve Jobs lấy chiếc iPod ra khỏi túi quần trong sự kiện trực tiếp, song chỉ sau đó vài giờ, nhân viên của Apple đã vượt Đại Tây Dương để mang đến cho tôi chiếc máy nghe nhạc tốt nhất hành tinh tại thời điểm bấy giờ.

Hộp đựng bên ngoài được thiết kế ấn tượng với một bức ảnh động của Jimi Hendrix. Bên trong, chiếc iPod với tông màu trắng tinh khiết trông giống như viên ngọc trai trong hộp trang sức. Apple cũng cẩn thận gửi kèm bộ sưu tập các đĩa CD nổi tiếng để người dùng thuận tiện hơn trong việc tải và sao chép nhạc một cách hợp pháp.

Từ The Beatles, Sarah McLachlan, Moby, Nirvana, Ella Fitzgerald, Alanis Morissette, Glenn Gould, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck cho đến Bob Dylan. Trải dài ở nhiều thể loại khác nhau nhưng tôi cho rằng đa phần chúng được lựa chọn theo gu âm nhạc của Jobs.

Cuộc phỏng vấn với vị CEO tài năng này diễn ra khá suôn sẻ. Jobs luôn là người đặt vấn đề trước, sẵn sàng nói với bạn về bất cứ điều gì ông muốn:

– Tại sao lại là một chiếc máy nghe nhạc?

– Chúng tôi yêu âm nhạc. Đáng buồn thay, thế giới vẫn chưa có một nhà sản xuất nào đủ tầm để trở thành người tiên phong trong lĩnh vực này. Lẽ đương nhiên, iPod sẽ thực hiện công việc đó, trở thành một sản phẩm bước ngoặt.

– Hoạt động nghiên cứu diễn ra trong bao lâu?

– Chúng tôi bắt đầu nhận thấy cơ hội kinh doanh từ nửa cuối năm ngoái và bắt đầu công việc từ đầu năm nay. Vì đã đưa ra một tầm nhìn cụ thể từ trước nên công việc đơn giản chỉ là biến các kế hoạch trở thành hiện thực. Đó là một thiết bị mang tính đột phá, một bước nhảy vọt khổng lồ.

Nghe có vẻ buồn cười tại thời điểm hiện tại, song một trong những tính năng “đắt giá” của iPod lúc bấy giờ là khả năng tự đồng bộ với thư viện nhạc iTunes khi kết nối với máy tính.

– Đối tượng khách hàng của iPod là những ai?

– Hiện tại có 7,5 triệu người dùng máy tính Mac. Mục tiêu ban đầu chúng tôi hướng tới chính là những khách hàng này.

– Apple sẽ ra mắt một phiên bản iPod dành cho Windows chứ?

– Chúng ta sẽ phải chờ xem.

Cuối cùng, tôi hỏi ông liệu đây có phải là thiết bị được thiết kế để vực dậy tinh thần mọi người trong giai đoạn khó khăn này của nước Mỹ.

“Đây là thời điểm không dễ để vượt qua. Nhưng cuộc sống vẫn tiếp tục. Chúng ta phải tiến lên phía trước. Hy vọng sản phẩm này sẽ mang lại chút niềm vui cho mọi người”, Jobs trả lời.

Tôi ngay lập tức trải nghiệm chiếc iPod vào ngày hôm sau khi đến dự bữa tiệc được Microsoft tổ chức tại Marriott Marquis nhằm thảo luận về sự ra mắt của Windows cùng với Bill Gates và các giám đốc điều hành khác.

Khi tiệc tàn và có cơ hội được ngồi cạnh Bill Gates, tôi đưa chiếc máy nghe nhạc ra trước mặt và hỏi ông liệu đã biết về nó chưa?

Ánh mắt của Gates lúc này khiến tôi liên tưởng tới phản ứng của những phi hành gia khi bắt gặp người ngoài hành tinh trong những bộ phim giả tưởng. Ngón tay ông bắt đầu di chuyển liên tục trên những nút ấn của chiếc iPod, mắt vẫn dán chặt vào màn hình hiển thị.

Sau một hồi “nghiên cứu”, ông trao chiếc máy lại cho tôi, nhận xét: “Trông nó thật tuyệt, phải không? Tiện thể, nó chỉ hoạt động trên Mac thôi sao?”

Thật không ngờ chiếc iPod, cuộc nói chuyện với Steve và câu hỏi của Bill lại dẫn tới bài viết của tôi về một hiện tượng văn hóa vào 3 năm sau, thậm chí xuất bản cả một cuốn sách về thiết bị mang tính đột phá đó sau 5 năm nữa.

Những ngày cuối tháng 10, Steve đã yêu cầu tôi gửi email cho ông về cảm nhận sau khi dùng iPod. Tôi trả lời rằng mình đặc biệt ấn tượng với khả năng tổng hợp nhiều bài hát thành một bộ sưu tập duy nhất đồng thời đưa ra một vài gợi ý nhằm tối ưu hóa trải nghiệm người dùng.

Trải qua 15 năm, vị CEO ngày nào đã ra đi mãi mãi, tự thân iPod cũng đã phát triển những bước rất dài. Tuy nhiên, những ký ức về một thiết bị đột phá ra mắt và nhận được sự ủng hộ không tưởng từ người dùng trong khoảng thời gian đen tối nhất của nước Mỹ vẫn sẽ còn mãi trong lịch sử thế giới.
